A Big Thank YOU

THE REASON WHY Dear Friends,

As we participate in the sacred season of Lent, we may search for its true importance. What is the meaning for the individual believer? The whole purpose of Lent is to remind us what the Lord did for us. Jesus came to us through the Incarnation with His humble birth in Bethlehem, so that He could

redeem us. Humanity fell with the first Adam; humanity would be restored with the second Adam…Christ. The forty days of fast by Our Lord in the desert at the beginning of His public ministry teaches

us the meaning of self-denial. It is through this discipline that we learn that things, inordinate desires, or temptations should not have control over us. Rather, we should have control over them through the

grace of Christ Jesus. It demands effort on our part! This is why the Church, in her wisdom, gives us the forty days of Lent so our lives can be purified and strengthened. The reality of grace, combined with our self-discipline, can provide a new purpose and beginning. It is all directed to a purposeful life in

Christ. Remember, our Church and our faith offer new beginnings for the human person, which is at the heart of this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

The first words that Jesus preached were: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” (Mk 1-15) Central to the

ministry of Jesus was the conversion of heart that the human person should render. Stephen Richter in his book Metonia (a word meaning change of heart) states: “At the beginning stands God not man. Man is always second in relation oto God. The essence of sin consists precisely in man’s wishing to

come first, to be the beginning, the middle and the end of things.” All sin is rooted in self-centeredness. It makes us selfish. Christ is proclaiming that we seek a conversion of heart. It consists in making a

180⁰ turn away from selfishness to a sacrificial love for God and neighbor. You may recall the story of Jonah and his experience with the whale. Jonah, in his fright, was running away from preaching

repentance to the Ninevites when he was shipwrecked, and his unpleasant experience with the whale followed. This near-death experience led to a new life and a new beginning. This was Jonah’s conversion and, low and behold, he makes his way to Nineva. Now, given a second chance by God he

goes to this huge city with all its people and they accept his message as God’s prophet and they repent.

Here are a few simple steps we might consider for conversion of heart which can be borrowed from Christ’s call of the Apostles. First, he invited simple men to follow Him, I mean simplicity in the best sense. They were men who had good hearts. A good heart is receptive to Christ’s invitation and allows

the power of divine grace to bend us so we might mirror more perfectly the person Christ desires. Second, Christ called His apostles by name. He knows us individually and always presents to us His

mercy and love. We should never feel abandoned in life. Certainly, we are never without hope. This gives us a confidence found with God as we seek ongoing conversion from our sinful proclivities and

bad habits. Third, Christ sends His apostles forth. He asks that with our conversion of heart we become living witnesses in our marriages, professions, and as the people of God and the Church to His love and presence in our lives.

Is all of this a handful? It might seem so, but the reason for Lent is to underscore the eternal

prescription that Christ gives us. We can have spiritual health through a

conversion of heart. It is my prayer for all of us that we experience a spiritual

and fruitful Lent through acts of penance, prayer, and self-denial.

Lenten Retreat: Behold God’s Mercy Monday, March 14 & Tuesday, March 15

Details to come.

Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or abil-ity to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disci-plines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake

these practices seriously in a spirit of penance of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

The Second Letter to the Corinthians is considered one of St Paul's most turbulent and auto-biographical letters. A recent edition of the periodical The Bible Today included a number of articles on this book of the Bible. These articles will be studied as part of our Lenten bible study. Participants will be provided with a copy of this edition. The program will run on Thursday nights in the Church hall from 7 to 8:30 pm starting on February 18. To sign up for the program or to get more information call the rectory or send an email to [email protected].

Forty Days By Dr. Scott Hahn

Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Psalms 91:1-2,10-15 Romans 10:8-13 Luke 4:1-13 In today's epic Gospel scene, Jesus relives in His flesh the history of Israel. We've already seen that like Israel, Jesus has passed through water, been called God's beloved Son (see Luke 3:22; Exodus 4:22). Now, as Israel was tested for forty years in the wilderness, Jesus is led into the desert to be tested for forty days and nights (see Exodus 15:25). He faces the temptations put to Israel: Hungry, He's tempted to grumble against God for food (see Exodus 16:1-13). As Israel quarreled at Massah, He's tempted to doubt God's care (see Exodus 17:1-6). When the Devil asks His homage, He's tempted to do what Israel did in creating the golden calf (see Exodus 32). Jesus fights the Devil with the Word of God, three times quoting from Moses' lecture about the lessons Israel was supposed to learn from its wilderness wanderings (see Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:16; 6:12-15). Why do we read this story on the first Sunday of Lent? Because like the biblical sign of forty (see Genesis 7:12; Exodus 24:18; 34:28; 1 Kings 19:8; Jonah 3:4), the forty days of Lent are a time of trial and purification. Lent is to teach us what we hear over and over in today's readings. "Call upon me, and I will answer," the Lord promises in today's Psalm. Paul promises the same thing in today's Epistle (quoting Deuteronomy 30:14; Isaiah 28:16; Joel 2:32). This was Israel's experience, as Moses reminds his peo-ple in today's First Reading: "We cried to the Lord...and He heard." But each of us is tempted, as Israel was, to forget the great deeds He works in our lives, to neglect our birthright as His beloved sons and daughters. Like the litany of remembrance Moses prescribes for Is-rael, we should see in the Mass a memorial of our salva-tion, and "bow down in His presence," offering ourselves in thanksgiving for all He has given us.
