Baptism of the Lord

Catholic Parish of St. Canice

Baptism of the Land

A young man, a carpenter by trade, set out from the small village of Nazareth. He had heard that the son of a kinswoman of his mother Mary was preaching and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins at the Jordan River. He must have walked east along dirt roads for at least a full day towards that distant river valley.

Today, as his followers, we journey with him. What does baptism mean for us? Is it a dramatic break from a sinful past and a new commitment to love God and neighbour?

Sinless in a sinful society, Jesus came to the river. As John the Baptiser prayed and the water poured over him, Jesus shared in our human burden. The heavens broke. A heavenly voice affirmed his divinity. His saving work began, his identity confirmed. Do we continue to walk with him?

This Sunday marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of Ordinary time in our liturgical year. The hope of Christmas, though, never ends. We can feed the hungry, shelter to the homeless, visit the sick, welcome the stranger, heal a wounded, broken planet and find the promised peace our baptism offers.

Entrance Antiphon After the Lord was baptised, the heavens were opened, and the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Entrance Hymn: No 179 (Gather) Baptised in water Opening Prayer Almighty, ever-living God, who, when Christ had been baptised in the River Jordan and the Holy Spirit descended upon him, solemnly declared him your beloved Son, grant that your children by adoption, reborn of water and the Holy Spirit, may always be well pleasing to you. First Reading: Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken”. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a

shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

Response: Oh, bless the Lord, my soul!.

Second Reading: Titus 2: 11-14; 3:4-7 The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. But when the goodness and loving-kindness of God our Saviour appeared, he saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but according to his mercy, through the water of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. This Spirit he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, having been justified by his grace, we

might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! John said: He who is to come is mightier than I; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with-fire. Alleluia! Gospel: Luke 3: 2-4, 15-16, 21-22 The word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Parish Notices

THANK YOU all for your very generous support of “Our Christmas Special” collection the total of $5,000.00 was reached. All of these funds will go to Jesuit Mission; who then will forward this onto our Sister Parish in Railaco; where it

will be used to support the feeding programme, the medical teams and the various other works of the Mission.

Without this support from us and other givers they couldn’t continue to do the work they do. It’s great to think that we can make a difference, however small, in so many lives, like these

children in the picture. THANKS

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY LAST SUNDAY. We are part of a great drama that God has chosen to be a participant in, not in the role of a conquering king but as a suffering servant, not with the intention to condemn the world but to redeem it.

He saw the inestimable worth of human life, regardless of social status, wealth and worldly achievements, intelligence or national origin. So should we.
