Melbourne Burwood CampusThe Melbourne Burwood Campus is Deakin’s largest. It is located a short trip from Melbourne’s central business district, and offers the perfect balance between city lifestyle and suburban comfort. Geelong Waurn Ponds CampusDeakin’s Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus is known for its expansive grounds and impressive new buildings. The campus also offers incredible sporting facilities, including Deakin’s Elite Sport Precinct, which includes an Australian rules football oval, FIFA-grade soccer pitch, athletics track, basketball courts and more.

Geelong Waterfront CampusDeakin’s Geelong Waterfront Campus is located right on Corio Bay in the heart of Geelong, making for spectacular views from its many study spaces. The campus has a modern, industrial feel, mostly due to its history as wool stores in the 19th century. The unique mix of old and new allows for engaging and creative spaces, and its central location means students can visit Geelong’s central business district between classes.

A cost-effective choiceFor students (and parents) concerned about expenses, Warrnambool offers a lower cost of living than Melbourne and Geelong without sacrificing quality.

Warrnambool CampusDeakin’s Warrnambool Campus is close to surf beaches and popular tourist attractions. It is a friendly community: a place where students and lecturers really have the opportunity to get to know each other and work closely together. That sense of community extends to the whole of Warrnambool, providing support to new students in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. But for those looking for an occasional jolt of big city excitement, trains run four times daily to Melbourne.

Cloud CampusAs a flagship provider of distance education for more than 40 years, Deakin has a unique understanding of students who need to study from afar.

Deakin offers support in finding accommodation for students, whether you want to live on-campus or close by in a local community.

On-campus accommodationLiving on campus offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Deakin experience. Accommodation is available at all of our Australian campuses, and various lease lengths are offered. On-campus living provides an affordable and secure living and learning community, ideal for meeting new people and achieving academic success.

Living on campus could save you money. Utility bills and internet are included in the fee, and you don't have to pay an accommodation bond nor public transport costs to get to and from class.

HomestayDeakin students have the option of staying in a host family home. This provides a great opportunity for students to improve their English in everyday situations and to learn more about living in Australia.

Beyond tuition fees, there are a number of other costs that you need to consider before you decide to study in Australia. The Australian Government provides average living cost estimates for international students living and studying in the Australian State of Victoria. Costs vary depending on where you live. For example, living in Melbourne is slightly more expensive than living in Warrnambool. The diagram to the right lists some of these costs, but for more detailed information visit studyinaustralia.gov.au.

Overseas Student Health CoverIn addition to tuition fees, all on-campus international students are required to pay Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). The amount payable will be included in your Offer Letter.

ScholarshipsThere are scholarships available to international students through Deakin and through other parties, including the Australian Government.

Deakin offers a variety of scholarships to support high-achieving students, including:

• Deakin Vice-Chancellor’s International Scholarship offers a 100% or 50% tuition fee reduction for the normal duration of your course.

• Deakin International Scholarship offers 25% tuition fee reduction for the normal duration of your course.

Both scholarships recognise students with consistently high academic performance who have the potential to make a leading contribution to the University and its communities.

Deakin also offers scholarships and bursaries related to specific study areas and degrees, and to support students from certain countries and backgrounds.

Get startedWe make it our priority to ensure that all new international students – many of whom have arrived in Australia for the first time – make a smooth transition to the University. Deakin’s welcome program includes airport pick up, orientation, workshops, social events, study groups and opportunities for you to get involved in campus life.

Students Helping StudentsNo one understands students better than students. That is why student mentors are available to assist you with academic, practical or social matters to help you achieve your best results. This is a part of Deakin’s Students Helping Students service. Many student mentors are international students themselves so they know what it means to be new to Deakin and Australia.

International Student Advisers (ISAs)Friendly ISAs are located on each of Deakin’s campuses. These advisers have lived and studied in other countries and have experienced firsthand the cultural and social adjustments involved. ISAs provide general support to you during your studies and can do so in person, online or over the phone. You can book a private appointment or simply drop-in to the International Student Support Centre on your campus.

Join the clubGetting involved in university life is a great way to meet new people, take on new challenges, and look after your health and fitness. As a Deakin student you can join more than 150 clubs and societies across all campuses. We have a diverse range of clubs, including sporting, academic, health, religious and many more.

Health, safety and wellbeingDeakin offers a range of services to help students stay healthy and safe, and to promote personal wellbeing.

Deakin Medical Centre

Deakin Medical Centre provides professional medical and nursing healthcare and advice to students. Medical centres are located on all campuses. Campus nurse consultations are free and strictly confidential. Campus doctors bill directly through your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

Safety

Deakin’s campuses and communities are safe places for students. Even so, security officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at all campuses to ensure the safety of students and staff. Safer Community is a service available for support, advice or information if something just doesn’t feel quite right. SafeZone is a free phone app for all Deakin students and staff, that connects you directly to the security team.

Supportive and inclusive environment

Deakin promotes a diverse, inclusive and supportive environment through a number of services and initiatives. The Disability Resource Centre (DRC) provides individual support to students with a disability or health condition so they can successfully participate in their studies and university life. The ALLY Network creates a more diverse and inclusive culture by promoting greater visibility and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, intersex, queer or questioning (LGBTIQ) students and staff.

DISC also helps returning international graduates connect with their home employment market.

Interns@DeakinThe Interns@Deakin program coordinates a range of internships each trimester within Deakin’s faculties, divisions, research centres, the FreelancingHUB and international offices overseas. With employers expecting graduates to already have work experience, completing an internship during your studies can be extremely important. The skills you learn will help build your resume, and will enable you to provide examples of how you have already applied your studies in a professional setting.

Interns@Deakin is a competitive process and you will need to meet baseline resume standards to progress in the selection process.

FreelancingHUBThe FreelancingHUB is an exciting initiative designed to develop work-ready graduates through work experience opportunities. The HUB positions students in not-for-profit or community organisations where they develop a solution to a real-world project. Students work in cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural teams, and gain key employability skills, such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking. Each team is assigned an experienced mentor and project manager, and regular client interaction is facilitated to ensure the project stays on track. Internship placements are open to students across all study areas, but places are limited.

Internships as part of your degreeMany Deakin degrees offer the opportunity to complete an internship as part of the program. With the help of your lecturer, you can find a short-term work opportunity in a local organisation to gain exposure to real-life projects. Deakin students have worked in advertising firms, sporting organisations, local hospitals and wildlife parks, just to name a few. The experience gained as part of these internships can help add to your portfolio of work, which you can present to future employers.

Academic admission requirementsHow to apply

Deakin degrees have eligibility requirements and you will need to meet these in order to gain entry into a Deakin degree. Each degree has its own academic entry requirements.

Using the academic admission requirements tableThe table beginning on the next page details the academic admissions requirements for entry into Deakin undergraduate degrees. Check the table for the qualification most relevant to your secondary school studies. Some qualifications will require you to make a quick calculation to convert your results into scores that Deakin will use to assess your application. Use the notes below each table to learn how to calculate your total score.

Is your country not mentioned?If your academic achievements and country of origin are not mentioned on these pages, it does not mean that you cannot apply to Deakin. Our Admissions Team can take your academic record and other achievements, including workplace experience, into consideration.

Select countries not in the tableChina entry requirements – Gaokao (高考)

Gaokao students who meet the higher Tier One university cut off score for their province will meet the academic requirements for entry into most Deakin undergraduate degrees.

Vietnam entry requirements

For entry into most bachelor degrees, Vietnamese students must graduate with a National High School Graduate Certificate and achieve an overall GPA of at least 8.0 for Year 11 and Year 12. In addition, applicants must achieve a minimum score of 8.0 for three major subjects in Year 12. Major subjects include Maths, English, Chemistry, Literature, Physics, or Biology.

Students from select high-achieving secondary schools will be eligible for entry into Deakin undergraduate courses by graduating with a National High School Graduate Certificate and achieving an overall GPA of 8.0 for Year 12.

Indonesia entry requirements

Deakin accepts students into bachelor degree programs who have successfully completed the SMA3, achieved the specified average grade in the final two semesters of Year 12, and have been awarded a Certificate of Graduation (Keterangan Hasil Ujian Nasional – SKHUN). Most Deakin bachelor degrees require an average grade of at least 8.0 in the final two semesters of Year 12. The two exceptions are Business School (8.5) and Law School (9.0) degrees.

Canada entry requirements

Applicants must achieve a minimum of six Grade 12 credits. All applications are assessed individually.

New Zealand NCEA requirements

Achievement of a New Zealand University Entrance certification, and a minimum of 80 credits, including at least 60 credits at Level 3 or higher on the NZ qualifications framework, and at least 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English (4 credits in Writing and 4 credits in Reading required).

Applying to DeakinYou can apply to Deakin at any time throughout the year, and Deakin’s International Admissions team is always ready to quickly process applications and assist with any questions you may have. Application processes and requirements may differ slightly depending on your chosen degree, as well as your country of residence and entry pathway.

How to certify your documentsCertified copies of documents are photocopies that have been viewed along with the original document by an authorised person, who will stamp them as being authentic copies. Visit deakin.edu.au/int-apply to see how you can certify your documents and who they can be certified by.

Understand the entry requirementsIt is important that you understand the entry requirements for your degree before you submit your application. Entry requirements for each Deakin degree differ, and also depend on your country of residence. The minimum academic entry requirements can be found on pages 12 – 17 of this Guide. Some degrees may have additional interview or portfolio requirements.

Understand the English language requirementsAll applicants need to meet Deakin’s English language requirements – to the level necessary for their course. Minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores are included in the course information of this guide. For more information see page 19.

Gather supporting documentsWhen you apply to study at Deakin, it is important to attach all requested supporting documentation, otherwise your application could be delayed or rejected. Most documents need to be certified before they are submitted to Deakin; so give yourself plenty of time to get organised. Certified copies must include: award certificates, academic transcripts and formal identity papers (e.g. your passport). Documents must be translated into English.

English language requirements

To enrol in a Deakin degree, you will need to be able to read, speak, write and listen in English at a certain level. Different Deakin programs have different English language requirements.There are many ways to meet Deakin’s English language requirements. If your current English level is not high enough to meet our requirements, you may still be able to gain entry into your degree after improving your English at the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI).

How to meet English language requirementsAll students must be able to prove that they can meet Deakin’s English language requirements. You will be able to provide evidence of your English language skills if you have:

• met the required scores in a recognised English language test, such as IELTS or TOEFL

• completed university (tertiary) or high school (secondary) studies taught in English

• completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or another type of qualification taught in English

• lived and worked in an English-speaking country for at least five years.

IELTS is the most popular English language test in the world. IELTS tests are taken in nearly every country, and Deakin has IELTS testing and study centres on some of our campuses. IELTS tests assess listening, reading, writing and speaking skills.

TOEFL

The TOEFL test is available in two formats — one is delivered via the internet, and the other is a paper test. The majority of TOEFL test takers worldwide take the TOEFL iBT test, delivered via the internet. The TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is offered only in locations where testing via the internet is not available.

This five-week program is designed for students wishing to undertake the Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin. You will develop your English skills for accounting, law, finance and marketing, and extend your reading and writing skills for a range of complex business ideas and concepts.

Entry requirements:

• IELTS score of 6.0 (no band lower than 5), or

• Completion of EAP 3 with an overall score of 60 per cent.

English for Nursing

English requirements are generally higher for Nursing programs than other degrees. The five-week English for Nursing program is an intensive English program for advanced students. Credit point

First-class facilities and equipmentYour learning is enhanced by the use of state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, such as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) laboratory, wildlife tracking technology, aquaculture facilities, infrared motion sensing wildlife cameras, high-tech research laboratories, research vessels and remotely operated underwater vehicles.

Deakin is also a significant partner at the Queenscliff Marine Research Centre, providing students with access to laboratories and a variety of remarkable nearby marine and coastal ecosystems.

For Deakin marine students, researchers have developed Deakin’s purpose-built research vessel Yolla – which houses one of the most advanced sonar systems in the world – and have created a detailed continuous map of Victoria’s sea floor habitats. This data is playing a key role in supporting fishery and conservation management of the state’s marine environments.

Work experienceProfessional Practice is a core unit in all of Deakin's environment degrees. It allows you to complete a placement for a minimum of two weeks (at least 80 hours) within a relevant, course-related organisation. A number of elective units also offer you the opportunity to gain extensive practical experience, including undertaking a Global Environment Placement, Global Science Placement, Industry Based Learning, Career Placement or a STEM Placement.

Hands-on learningAll of Deakin’s environment degrees have a focus on hands-on learning, with experiences taking place from year one. Depending on the degree you choose, you may learn skills such as measuring the health of freshwater environments, coastal planning, surveying wildlife populations, conducting sustainability assessments and studying seals and penguins.

For example, students will undertake work in places such as:

Course overviewSport development at Deakin is distinctive due to its unique focus on three study streams: sport management and marketing, coaching and exercise, and sport science. Through Deakin's Bachelor of Sport Development, you will build an understanding of sport programs and pathways; contemporary health and community development approaches; and the organisation, management and governance of sport organisations. The course is focused on the quality of sport outcomes at all levels through the design of sport systems to attract, retain and nurture participants. You will learn how to develop coaching programs and sport development philosophies, and examine theoretical aspects of the science of coaching and how sport is used as a vital tool for community development. You will undertake analysis on agencies and organisations within the sports industry while examining and developing the skills utilised by professional sport managers.

Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science

Course overviewLearn how to apply exercise and sport science to improve the athlete, the team or the individual through training, coaching and advice. The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science will prepare you to become a professional leader in exercise and sport science and allied fields. You will have the opportunity to study the biological, sociological and behavioural bases of exercise and sport science. This degree provides a direct pathway for students to apply into the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology.

Work experienceA minimum 140 hours of practical experience in your final year is a core feature of this degree. This practical experience – which includes up to 13 exercise science discipline areas – combined with one-on-one career mentoring by staff, sets you apart from other graduates. You will also complete 80 hours of practical experience focusing on exercise delivery, bringing your total practical experience up to 220 hours throughout the degree.

Professional recognitionDeakin’s Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science is accredited by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA), and is the first and longest-standing nationally accredited undergraduate exercise and sport science program in Victoria. All graduates are eligible to apply for accreditation with ESSA as an Accredited Exercise Scientist.

Research degreesYou can pursue postgraduate research studies in three different ways:

• Masters by research, which is awarded for an original contribution to knowledge, achieved in up to two years of full-time candidature or part-time equivalent

• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), which is awarded for a substantial original contribution to knowledge, achieved in two to four years of full-time candidature or part-time equivalent

• Doctor of Psychology (DPsych), which is a professional doctorate program that combines a research project, coursework and structured research tasks that specifically relate to professional practice.

If you are a high-achieving student set to finish your bachelor degree at Deakin, you might have the opportunity to undertake an honours degree with us. Honours is a specialised year of study drawing together the theory and practical skills gained in your undergraduate studies. Studying at the honours level is a great way to get valuable research experience, improve your career opportunities or specialise in an area that you love. You will develop your knowledge of your chosen discipline through research and additional course work. Honours students are encouraged to take part in research seminars and forums and to present their research at conferences.

At Deakin you can apply to undertake honours in one of two ways:

On-course honours award

Choose a course that has honours embedded within the course, e.g. Bachelor of Occupational Therapy. This type of honours award recognises outstanding achievement in a bachelor degree program of four or more years that has an embedded honours component.

Research-based honours award

Choose a course that allows you to undertake an additional year of study, e.g. Bachelor of Arts. This type of honours award allows you to undertake specialised research and research training while being supervised by an academic with a proven research record.

These honours awards will provide you with significant experience and exciting opportunities to expand your skill base before moving onto employment or postgraduate study. An honours award also provides the standard (and shortest) pathway for entry into research degrees.
