MISSION

De Re Metallica Ingeniería Limitada, DRM, is a Chilean consulting company for industrial processes, created in August 1995 by outstanding professionals in the copper extractive metallurgy.

Our mission is to advise companies in the mining and metallurgical field as well as other industrial activities, in a series of aspects such as: Project Engineering, New Process Development, Diagnosis of Industrial Operations, Metallurgical Auditing, Process Optimization and Control, Computational Code Development, Project Evaluation, Patenting Studies and Professional Training.

Differentiating element compared to conventional engineering is the TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION component in all our work, evidenced through intensive use of Basic Sciences and Engineering Sciences aimed to solve the industrial problems presented to us. DRM has the response capacity of engineering companies with the deepness of a research centre or university.

OUR PERSONS Jorge Menacho Llaña : Outstanding Chilean professional in the mining

industry. He was awarded as the “Professional of the Year” in 2005 by the Chilean Institution for Mining Engineers and the Ramón Salas Edwards Award to the “Outstanding Contribution to Engineering” published within years 2003-2005”, distinction given by the Chilean Engineer Institution in 2006. His background includes basic sciences (B.Sc. Chemistry, University of Chile, 1972) and engineering sciences (D.Sc. Metallurgical Engineering, University of Concepción, Chile, 1985, and Post Doct at Pennsylvania State University, USA, 1985-1986). Field of interest are Hydrometallurgy, Mineral Processing and Environment. He has been linked to several universities, the Mining and Metallurgical Research Centre (CIMM) and engineering companies. Since 1995 he holds the Technical Manager position at DRM.

Yadranka Zivkovic Domic : Chemical Civil Engineer from the University of

Concepción, Chile. She worked shortly for the University of Concepción, then for CIMM and DRM since 1995. She has been involved in a variety of projects mainly in the Hydrometallurgy field. Areas of interest are process math modeling for optimization and environment control and the study of chemical topics in SX, contaminant behavior and patenting studies. She is Senior Consultant and Operation Manager at DRM.

Patricio Chávez Espinoza : Metallurgical Civil Engineer from the University

of Santiago, Chile. He has been involved in many optimization projects as well as metallurgical auditing. He is skilled in process analysis, dynamic modeling, optimization and code development. He is Process Engineer at DRM.

Elvis Peñaloza Ortiz : Metallurgical Engineer from the National University San Agustín de Arequipa Perú, he also holds a technical degree in Informatic Systems from the System and Data Processing Institute IPSIPRODA, Perú. He has been involved in development of design and optimization computing codes as well as metallurgical process studies. He currently holds the Process Engineer position at DRM.

Boris Merino Pulgar : Metallurgical Civil Engineer from the University of Concepción, Chile. He has been involved in many optimization projects as well as metallurgical auditing. He is skilled in process analysis, modeling and optimization.He has leaded the commissioning and start up of a new SX plant. He is Process Engineer at DRM

WORKING FIELD DRM is highly skilled in process development, engineering studies and operational analysis with robust knowledge on basic and engineering sciences, much deeper than conventional engineering companies, for whom DRM use to be Consultant. Our knowledge on fundamentals allows to face any industrial process, but our experience is centered in Hydrometallurgy, Mineral Processing and Environmental Issues. We are “expert in solving specific process problems and also in the overall optimization and control of industrial plants, strongly oriented toward immediate improvement of the business result”, a highly valued feature in these high price days. How can we do this? By using our rich 35 years experience in process analysis and also by handling a battery of phenomenological models, most of them developed by ourselves, with intense use of transport phenomena, chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, reactor analysis, bioprocessing and other tools to model, simulate and optimize industrial operations. Contamination in the Electrolyte in Solvent Extraction Plants for Copper and Other Common Metals through Addition of an Acid Sodium Sulfate Solution with or without other Saline Compounds, Chi. Pat. Application N°2265, August 2002. Sodium sulfate solution is added to the organic phase thus increasing notably the phase disengagement.

-. Procedure to Remove Aqueous Entrainment, Cruds and Solid Particles

from Organic Effluents in Solvent Extraction Plants and Improve of the Physico-Chemical Properties, Chi. Pat. Application N°1868, August 2002. Dirty organic solution is recycled through a coalescer filled with natural ligno-cellulose materials, previously activated thus producing fast and clean phase separation.

-. Procedure to Restore Physico-Chemical Properties of Organic Solutions

in Solvent Extraction Plants for Copper and Other Common Metals, Chi. Pat. Application N°1909, August 2002. Organic solution is circulated through a plate filter containing activated and fine-size natural ligno-cellulose materials. Fast phase disengagement is obtained as final result.

Application N°00987, 1998. Leach procedure where poly electrolyte solutions are added to improve permeability and recovery of the valuable elements.

-. Process to Inhibit Silica Dissolution in the Acid Leaching of Copper

Silicate Ores, Chi. Pat. Application Nº71-78, Feb. 1978. This process of acid curing is one of the outstanding features in most of the modern acid leach technology. It particularly made possible the economical

beneficiation of the Mina Sur orebody, property of Codelco Chile and today it is of standard use everywhere.

-. Method to Recover Organic Solution from Cruds in Solvent Extraction

Processes, Chi. Pat. Nº30.876, January 1979. This procedure was standard for about twenty years and it represents even today an efficient way to recover organic solution from cruds.

-. Process to Reduce Crud Appearance in Solvent Extraction Systems by

Adding Fine Solids, Chi. Pat. Nº206.824 (1977). Methodology broadly used at SX plants; reinvented in 1981 by Magma Copper/San Manuel. The Chilean patent was never commercialized.

-. Acid Pretreatment Process to Increase Floatability of Metallic

Sílfides, Chi. Pat. Application Nº869.87 (1987). One of the few successful applications of the electrochemistry in the flotation. A success trial was performed at 40,000 tons/day increasing both recovery and concentrate grade. Quite useful to beneficiate chalcopyrite ores with acid gangue.

-. Process for Iron Removal from Acid Leach Solutions, Chi. Pat.

Application Nº225.78 (1978). Process to purify leach solutions previous to the application of the copper solvent extraction in Chile. It was succesfully used in Chuquicamata in 1977 to remove iron from the leach solutions.

-. Procedure and Device to Fracture Materials within an Accoustic Field,

Chi. Pat. Application Nº17772.96, 1996. New process and equipment for particle size reduction in a vibrating high pressure roll mill with advantages in energy consumption, size distribution and purity of product.

-. Un Procedimiento para Remover Arrastres de Acuoso, Crud y Sólidos

desde Efluentes Orgánicos de Plantas de Extracción por Solventes y Mejoramiento de sus Propiedades Físico.Químicas, Sol. Pat. Chi. N°1868, Ago. 2002. La fase orgánica sucia se hace circular a través de un coalescedor relleno con materiales ligno celulósicos naturales, los que

han sido previamente activados, lo que induce la coalescencia de las gotas de acuoso y retención de los sólidos por contacto con el lecho.

-. Procedimiento para la Restauración de las Propiedades Físico-Químicas

del Orgánico de Operación en Plantas de Extracción por Solventes de Cobre y de Otros Metales Comunes, Sol. Pat. Chi. N°1909, Ago. 2002. La fase orgánica con separación de fases deficiente, se hace circular a través de un filtro de placas, que contiene una precapa formada por materiales ligno celulósicos naturales de fina granulometría y químicamente activados. Como resultado se obtiene un orgánico altamente4 restaurado en sus propiedades de separación de fases.

-. Método de Lixiviación en Lecho FijoAsistido por Aglomeración In Situ,

Sol. Pat. Chi. N°00987, 1998. Procedimiento de lixiviación en que se adicionan poli electrolitos en la solución de riego de pilas o bateas, para mejorar el escurrimiento y por tanto la extracción del metal que se lixivia..

-. Un Proceso para Reducir la Disolución de Sílice en la Lixiviación Ácida

de Menas Silicatadas de Cobre, Sol. Pat. Chi 71-78, Feb. 1978. Este proceso (curado ácido) es uno de los pilares sobre los cuales descansa la Tecnología Moderna de Lixiviación de Lechos de Minerales; posibilitó el Beneficio Económico de la Mina Sur de Codelco y su uso es hoy generalizado en la mayoría de las operaciones de lixiviación..

- Un Método de Tratamiento del CRUD para Recuperar la Solución

aplicaciones exitosas a nivel mundial de la Electroquímica de Flotación. En Sewell se corrió la planta completa a 40.000 toneladas, incrementando recuperación y ley de cobre, simultáneamente. Útil en la Flotación de Menas Calcopiríticas Refractarias.

- Un Proceso para la Remoción de Hierro desde Soluciones de Lixiviación

Ácida, Sol. Pat. Chi. 225.78 (1978). Proceso de purificación química de soluciones anterior a la extracción por solventes. Se aplicó exitosamente en Chuquicamata en 1977 para remover Fe desde soluciones de Lixiviación Ácida de las Bateas. Se dejó de usar por razones de costo y disponibilidad del fosfato precipitante.
