Powers and Purposes of Government

• While governments serve many important purposes, they also wield enormous power and can be viewed as possible threats to freedom and individual liberty. Governments are human inventions and that those who have chosen to live in social groups find them to be of great value.

• In order to fulfill their purposes, governments have to have certain powers without which they could not do what they are created to do. For example, governments cannot provide national security or necessary public services, such as building and maintaining roads, unless they have funds from sources such as taxes. Historians often point to the Articles of Confederation as an example of a plan for government that did not endure because it was not given sufficient powers to accomplish the goals that its framers had in mind.

Dress Code

• Parent: I love the idea of school uniforms. Right now, I spend hundreds of dollars a year on my student's clothes and they often are not worn. It is a waste of money to have that go to waste. With uniforms, I would only have to spend a fraction of that. Also, uniforms will prevent me and my child from having daily arguments. Every day we fight about what clothes are appropriate to wear. Having uniforms will save time and frustration in the morning which will be so helpful. The uniforms will also help to make my child feel safe at school so that way they will not be judged for their clothes. I really hope uniforms come into the schools.

• Student: I hate the idea of school uniforms. Shopping is one of my favorite things to do and having uniforms will mean that I will not be able to pick out my own clothes. I love deciding what I am going to wear and have my outfits picked out carefully. I don't want to look like every other person. I want to be able to express myself through my clothes and show people the things I like to wear. If uniforms come to school, it will be boring and hard to tell people apart. I really don't want to have to wear uniforms.

The Cheating Scandal!

A Social Studies teacher has strong suspicionsthat a student named Bob cheated on his lasttest. The teacher plans to investigate the alleged act of cheating by questioning some of the other students in the class. The teacher has asked the Science teacher on his team to help out with the investigation.
