Transport and impact on the environment

The background to all the alarming reports.

The climate issue is not a temporary trend - we have to act now!

Transport and impact on the environment

Transport is the only sector increasing its carbon dioxide emissions.

The DB Group’s environmental work - resources at various levels

The climate issue is one of DB Schenker Group’s strategic areas.

The resources for working towards a sustainable transport system are located on various levels.

Land Transport:

DB environmental department, Berlin, Germany

DB Schenker, PM Land, Essen, Germany

DB Schenker, Market, Göteborg, Sweden

DB Schenker Consulting, Göteborg & Stockholm, Sweden

DB Schenker, Division Land - each local district office in Sweden has its own environmental coordinator

DB Group's environmental work - climate goals for reduced carbon dioxide emissions

DB Schenker’s common climate objective is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% per ton-kilometre by 2020.

DB Schenker in Sweden has set itself an even tougher objective - halving the emissions per ton-kilometre by 2020.

DB Schenker Sweden - environmental objective

Our ambition

To use all the means available to DB Schenker to become the most environmentally sustainable logistics provider in the world.

Our comprehensive environmental objective

Reduce our carbon dioxide emissions in every transport assignment by 50% through to 2020.

We will reach our objectives by following a seven point programme:

driver behaviour – eco driving at the right speed

modernisation of our vehicle fleetbetter fuelsinter-modality and combined

trafficoptimisation of vehicle

combinationsimproved vehicle utilisation –

higher filling levels/reduced mileage

smarter distribution in cities

7Schenker AB, 05.10.2009

DB Schenker Sweden - reduced carbon dioxide emissions

Improved use of capacity means reduced estimated carbon dioxide per transported ton.

8Schenker AB, 05.10.2009

DB Schenker Sweden - reduced overall emissions

An updated vehicle fleet and better use of capacity means a reduction in the quantity of particles, hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide per transported ton.

DB Schenker Sweden – Towards climate neutral goods transport - ‘KNEG’

DB Schenker’s three concrete measures in collaboration with ‘KNEG’, towards climate neutral goods transport within the next 3 to 5 years are to

Train all drivers in Ecodriving

Phase out all old trucks (Euro 1 & 2)

Use the most environmentally friendly diesel available for all trucks

DB Schenker Sweden - Seven point programme

1. Driver behaviour – eco driving at the right speed

2. Modernisation of our vehicle fleet

3. Better fuels

4. Inter-modality and combined traffic

5. Optimisation of vehicle combinations

6. Improved vehicle utilisation – higher filling levels/reduced mileage

7. Smarter distribution in cities

DB Schenker Sweden - Public transport for goods

Collective goods transport is as obvious as choosing public transport instead of taking the car.

Our aim

“Using public transport for people and goods improves cities, creating less traffic and a lively city centre."

Strategically located terminals

Routes for supplying goods transport in both directions.

Offer city logistics solutions to the largest cities in Sweden

Vehicles adapted for city logistics

Modern and energy-efficient vehicles

DB Schenker Sweden - Follow up routine for transport operators

13Schenker AB, 05.10.2009

Schenker sends out two surveys to its partner transport operators once a year.

The survey is sent by email and the answers are collected in a database.

One of the surveys deals with vehicle specific questions - Euro class, fuel consumption, etc.

The other survey deals with 'soft questions'.

The answers are evaluated centrally and some of the hauliers are contacted.

The answers are sorted by Schenker district and sent to the corresponding ‘head office’ for a personal review between the haulier and the district manager.

In 2008, responses were received from hauliers representing 89% of the vehicles in Schenker’s national transport.

Different methods of transport – a comparison

TrainTrains are generally very energy

efficient and nearly always the best alternative for land transport from an environmental point of view, particularly in Sweden where trains run on electricity produced from hydro and nuclear energy (electricity generated by coal is not as environmentally friendly).

TruckNew trucks are often more energy

efficient than older vehicles, but it is the regulated emissions such as particles (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NOX), sulphur oxide (SOX) and hydrogen (HC) that have decreased with every new Euro class.

ShipShipping is often energy efficient

because of the large amount of goods transported per unit - speed also affects fuel consumption.

The current drawback is the high nitrogen and sulphur oxide emissions. Better fuels and cleaning techniques are available.

AirplaneAir transport requires a lot of energy

and is therefore linked with high carbon dioxide emissions for each transported unit. The developmental focus here is on more energy-efficient engines and renewable fuels.

- Emissions calculations for DB Schenker customers

15Schenker AB, 06.10.2009

A new emissions report will be launched in 2009.

The customer can access the emissions report by logging in to ‘MySchenker’ - login details can be ordered from Customer Services.

Applies to national and international land transport, conventional goods, refrigeration and parcels.
