4SOCIAL HUB | SOUTH CAMPUS DORMITORY Syracuse University, Syracuse, New Yorkcollaboration w/ stephen nowak
5The south campus of syracuse university is a satellite location for housing athletes and underclassmen. The barrack typology plagues the landscape with monotonous bar style apartment buildings. The winding roads are pinched by the main arteries and desired pedestrian paths. This project calls for the insertion of a 60 key dormitory and social hub. These major programmatic elements impregnate the living facilities - a cafe, a movie theater, and a sport court. Each of these elements project visual and audible information to selected adjacent programs.
With the site having a considerable slope, the building pushes itself into the hill, allowing pedestrians to enter on both the ground and first floor. Against the retaining wall, a road cuts thorough the building, allowing vehicle access to the parking lot. Perpendicular to this roadway, a pedestrian boulevard connects both levels of entry and allows passersby to experience the guts of the building without physically entering. At the intersection of these two paths, rises and elevator core, completing the Cartesian coordinates.
The building is a steel frame structure with concrete floor slabs. A polycarbonate facade permits the building to read monolithic during the day, while revealing itself at night. Creating the illusion of a seemingly impossible cantilever, a vierendeel truss balances on the larger service core.

This project is situated in one of the few dense residential areas in Syracuse, adjacent to Washington Square Park. However, while it offers the possibility of urban life, the neighborhood lacks amenities such as recreational and gathering space and is bound by a band of under-utilized industrial warehouses on its southern edge.

The given program is based on creating a microcosm of urban life, a center for activity in the neighborhood. The project not only acts as a destination for it surrounding residents and beyond but also injects life back into the historic park.

ARNO RIVER CONNECTION | SAN FREDIANO PLAZA REVITILIZATION San Frediano, Firenze, Italy
The site for the project consists of an existing piazza - dedicated to parking - and an unused strip of space alongside the citys medieval wall, and a portion of riverbank with access to the Arno River There is a demand for recreational space in the city to host community functions and sports, in hopes to foster inter-generational learning and community building. Re-injecting public space back into the piazza was a priority. Thus, transforming the existing parking lot into a hybridized space to accommodate a flea market, outdoor seating for projecting screen, and park would become an attraction. A redesigned promenade along the medieval wall will guide pedestrians from the new riverfront community hall that houses local gallery exhibits and a traditional coffee shop along the Arno River.

Premise:The lack of public space in Los Angeles is privatizing the lifestyle of its various distinct neighborhoods. The creation of new public nodes of interaction, connecting social boundaries will ensure the vitality of these neighborhoods.
Contention:Due to its lack of programming and connective infrastructure, the Los Angeles River exists as an uninhabitable rift between three low-income communities. Architecturally rehabilitating the riverfront allows for an opportunity to connect these divided communities by providing public nodes to encourage cultural interaction and community identity, particularly among its large underprivileged youth population. The incorporation of recreational and educational facilities within a rehabilitated wildlife corridor will provide the youth on both sides of the river with a new community destination.
