IMPORTANT 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEAR INFO INSIDE Kindergarten Registration, Student Transfers,

Gr. 6 Late French Immersion, Gr. 1 French Immersion

2014 -2015 Registration Information

Kindergarten Registration This year, January 27 to 31, is Kindergarten Registration Week. Registration will begin at 8:00 am on Monday morning. This first day is always a busy one so anticipate that the building and parking lot will be busier that day. Those registering are reminded to bring a birth certifi-cate, care card and proof of address with them. https://documents.sd61.bc.ca/edsrvs/kindergarten/1.Kindergarten_Registration_in_January_2014.pdf

Student Transfer Process All students in the Greater Victoria School District are members of a Family of Schools. A Family of Schools is comprised of several elementary schools from which students move to a designated Middle School and from there to a designated Secondary School. The pathway for students at Rogers is for them to move to Cedar Hill Middle School and then Reynolds Sec-ondary School. If you wish for your child to change schools (or pathways) you must com-plete the Student Transfer Application Form. The Student Transfer period is February 13-21 and forms can be picked up from the Office or via the District Website. After this period it will be your responsibility to contact the new school to register. https://documents.sd61.bc.ca/super/pdf/Transfer_Process/K-12StudentTransferProcess.pdf

Middle School Parent Information Nights Grade 5 Parents and Students are encouraged to attend the Middle School Information Nights put on by each Middle School. Please see the information in this newsletter for all of the dates and times. Cedar Hill hosts their Information Night on January 28th - 7:00-8:30 pm Glanford hosts their Information Night on February 11 - 7:00-8:30 pm

(A reminder that families and students wishing to attend Glanford Middle School must complete a District Transfer Form between February 13 - 21)

Enrollment in Grade 1 French Immersion For those parents that wish to enroll their child in Grade 1 French Immersion from English Kindergarten for September 2014 you are asked to complete registration forms between Jan-uary 28-31 at your French Immersion catchment school. www.sd61.bc.ca/earlyFIreg.aspx

Enrollment in Grade 6 Late French Immersion For those parents wishing to enroll their child in the Late French Immersion (Grade 6) pro-gram you are asked to register at your choice of school between January 27 - 31. www.sd61.bc.ca/lateFIreg.aspx

KINDERGARTEN ENTRY IN SEPTEMBER 2014 Registration: January 27 - 31, 2014

All children born in 2009 are eligible to begin Kindergarten in September 2014.

Register your child between January 27 and 31, 2014 at your CATCHMENT AREA SCHOOL

Registration will take place at the schools between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm and will be processed according to the time of registration. To determine your English program catchment school, please visit our website at www.sd61.bc.ca, click

on Schools, then School Locator.

To determine your French Immersion catchment area school, please visit our website at www.sd61.bc.ca/frim.aspx or call 250-475-4189.

While most students, if not all, living in a school’s local catchment will be accommodated at that school, students cannot be guaranteed placement in the catchment area school and may be required to enroll at the nearest school with space available.

To request an out-of-catchment school within the District, register at your catchment school and com-plete a Student Transfer Application form.

Parents who already have an older child enrolled in one of our elementary schools in September 2014 and wish to have their younger child enrolled in the same school can register their Kindergarten child at that school rather than the catchment area school. They do not fill out a Student Transfer Application form.

To register, please bring: Proof of your child’s age and citizenship status. This can be a birth certificate, passport, landed immi-

grant authorization. Parents of children who are not Canadian Citizens or Landed Immigrants or do not have a birth cer-

tificate for their child are required to contact our International Student Program at (ph.) 250-592-6871 prior to registration.

Proof of your address. This can be your driver’s licence, a utility bill with your current postal code, etc.

Your child’s BC Medical Care Card. General questions? Please call the school board office at 250-475-4220.

The Aboriginal Full-Day Kindergarten program is located at Craigflower and George Jay Elementary Schools. For enrollment or questions, please contact the schools directly: Craigflower 250-384-8157 or

George Jay 250-385-3381

The Coastal Kindergarten program is offered at James Bay Community School and South Park Family School. Registration for this program starts on January 20, 2014. For more information go to https://

documents.sd61.bc.ca/edsrvs/kindergarten/Coastal_Kindergarten.pdf

For enrollment in Cloverdale Traditional School, South Park Family School, and Sundance Elementary School, please contact the schools directly.

PREVENTING COLDS AND INFLUENZA (FLU)

Cold and influenza season is here. Children need reminders to decrease the risk of colds and flu in your house and at school by: Washing hands often Coughing and sneezing into their elbow Not sharing facecloths or towels Keeping hands away from nose and mouth Not sharing food or drink with others To help limit the spread of germs, please keep your child at home if he or she is feverish, coughing a lot, has a thick yellow or green discharge from the nose, or is otherwise obviously unwell. Viruses cause colds and influenza. The most effective treatment for a cold is rest and fluids. The influenza vaccine will protect against specific types of influenza. Antibiotics will not make a cold or other virus go away faster. However, more serious infections can start out as a cold. Call your doctor if your child has an earache, fever higher than 39o C (102o F), rash, is very sleepy, very cranky or fussy, has trouble breathing or a cough that will not go away. Handwashing is the most effective way to stop the spread of germs that cause colds, influenza, diarrhea, and other illnesses. To wash hands properly: For more information contact:
