Take all your chances at bridge

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ A K Q 2 Vul: None ♥ 3 2 ♦ A 10 8 ♣ J 10 9 2

♠ 3 ♥ A K Q J 10 8 ♦ K J 7 ♣ K 4 3

On the way to 6♥, you asked for aces via 4NT. West leads the ♥5, which you win in hand. Both follow to a second heart. Plan the play.

The idea is to try to avoid the diamond guess if possible. Draw a third round of trumps, discarding a club from dummy. Your next move should be to cash the dummy’s three top spades, discarding two clubs. Ruff a spade and exit with the ♣K.

If West has the ♣A and no more spades, he will

be forced to lead a minor-suit card, ending the play. If West gets out with a club, a club winner will be established for a diamond discard. If West gets out with a diamond, you can claim. If West has a fifth spade and leads it, ruff and try to get the diamonds right. The idea is to try to figure out which opponent has more diamonds and play that person for the queen. If West started with five spades, East is more likely to have diamond length.

If East has the ♣A and doesn’t have a spade to lead, East’s best return is a low club, which you should ruff. If West started with a doubled ♣Q, you won’t have to guess the diamonds, otherwise you will. If East has a spade to lead, it’s basically back to the diamond finesse. You have given yourself your best chance to avoid the diamond finesse. The full deal:

♠ A K Q 2 ♥ 3 2 ♦ A 10 8 ♣ J 10 9 2 ♠ J 7 6 4 ♠ 10 9 8 5 ♥ 6 5 ♥ 9 7 4 ♦ Q 5 4 ♦ 9 6 3 2 ♣ A Q 7 6 ♣ 8 5 ♠ 3 ♥ A K Q J 10 8 ♦ K J 7 ♣ K 4 3

For this tournament, the anecdotes you’re used to seeing at the beginning of the column are replaced by a Quick Tip at the end. Enjoy.

For first-timersBy Brent Manley

This column is directed primarily at players attending an NABC for the first time. In case you are wondering, NABC stands for North American Bridge Championships. That’s right: There are many championships to be won at this tournament, including those in the Intermediate/Newcomer games you are about to enter.

You may not realize this, but the players in these games are just as important to the ACBL as the experts and world champions in the major events.

All I/N games are run by tournament directors who specialize in newcomer games. Celebrity speakers are on hand every day for lectures. The I/N program features special goodie bags, snacks, table gifts, guaranteed partners and photos of I/N winners.

Important note: Today, 0-5 newcomer pairs play free.

For those who are brand new to this experience, it can seem overwhelming, and it’s normal to be nervous the first time out. Don’t worry if you experience some jitters. You aren’t the only one.

For those who are wondering about how to survive the first time, here are some details about your games.

The first thing you and your partner must do is purchase an entry. If you are playing in a pairs

game – the form will include space for you and partner to put down your names and player numbers so that the ACBL computer will know how many masterpoints you won in each event.

The entry form will also tell you the section you are to play in, whether you are sitting East-West or North-South and the number of the table at which you will start. You can find your section by looking at the top of the many stanchions in the room where you will play.

Sections are identified by letters. In big events that require multiple sections, there might be Section A, Section AA and Section AAA (and so on with other letters). Be sure your entry and the section letters match.

If you bought a North-South entry, you will be stationary throughout the session. If you and partner are playing East-West, you will be moving after each round, going to the next higher table.

In a pairs movement, boards move to the next lower table after each round. Pairs go to the next higher table. In some games, about midway through the game, the director may tell you to skip a table when the next round is called. That means that your section has an even number of tables, and as you and the boards move around the room in opposite directions, at some point you will meet boards you have already played. The skip is to keep you from getting a second shot at those boards. We’re not being mean, just fair to your opponents.

Quick Tip When you are leading partner’s suit – she

opened the bidding or overcalled – it makes a difference whether you raised partner’s suit. If partner overcalled 1♠ and you are on lead after raising with ♠9 7 2, lead the 9. Partner knows you don’t have a doubleton because of your raise. If you did not raise, lead the 2. You don’t want to give the impression that you are short in the suit. If you raised with ♠Q 7 2, lead the 2, indicating that your raise included an honor. Do not lead the honor.

Free Bridge Classes Tomorrow!

Would you like to improve your bridge game? Who wouldn’t?! Well, here’s a fabulous opportunity for you to do just that. The local I/N Program Committee has arranged for DC metro-area teachers to host a Bridge University (BU).

This free set of lessons features a special hour-long interactive lecture by Jerry Helms (starting at 9:30 a.m.), followed by half-hour presentations by local bridge teachers (starting at 10:40 a.m.) who have selected their favorite material so that you can “create your own” curriculum just like in college. There are four timeslots with four topics per time slot. You can choose up to four topics from the 16 offered. Attend lectures in any one, two, three or all four time slots.

No need to preregister - just show up when you want. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23.

Don’t forget to stay and play in the 3 p.m. game set up just for your skill level! This game will be followed by a special reception for those with fewer than 300 masterpoints who have attended this afternoon game.

Don’t miss this golden opportunity to learn new bridge tricks from the experts and expand your chances to win gold in DC!

Winners of the 2014 von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs Cedric Lorenzini and Jean Quantin of France.

Life Master Pairs begins today

The von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs is a six-session event with two qualifying, two semifinal and two final sessions. It is restricted to Life Masters. At stake is the von Zedtwitz Gold Cup.

In 1930, Waldemar von Zedtwitz donated the Gold Cup, which was presented to the winners of the Life Master Pairs. The first winners: von Zedtwitz and P. Hal Sims.

Waldemar von Zedtwitz (1896–1984), ACBL president emeritus, was president of the ACBL in 1948 and of its parent organization, the American Bridge League, in 1932. He was named Honorary Member by the ABL in 1931.

When dissension threatened to break up the ACBL in 1948, the contesting factions agreed to von Zedtwitz as president and chairman with carte blanche power. He is credited with saving the ACBL. In 1949, upon the League’s rehabilitation, he immediately returned his carte blanche power to the Board of Directors.

He helped found the World Bridge Federation and played a major role in the formation of the ACBL Charity Foundation.

As a player, von Zedtwitz was noted for his versatility in playing with exponents of different systems. He was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master (he was No. 4) when the category was created in 1936.

Von Zedtwitz won many national auction bridge championships and nearly all the contract bridge championships. He and Barbara Brier won the World Mixed Pairs in 1970 when von Zedtwitz was 74 and legally blind.

Richard Reitman and Norman Schwartz won the Bruce LM–5000 Life Master Pairs in 2015.

Mini-Life Master Pairs Begin Today

The David Bruce LM-5000 Pairs is open to players who have earned Life Master status and have won up to 5000 masterpoints.

The Sally Young 0-1500 Pairs is open to players who have won up to 1500 masterpoints.

The events are named in honor of two of ACBL’s all-time great players, both members of the ACBL Hall of Fame.

David Bruce (1900–1965) was one of the first 10 to be named Life Master; in fact, he was #1. A tremendously successful player in the early ’30s, he was known as a soothing partner but an unsettling opponent. Bruce played with Oswald Jacoby and Howard Schenken on the first of the outstanding teams, the Four Horsemen, captained by P. Hal Sims.

In 1933 with Schenken, Jacoby and Dick Frey (joined shortly afterward by Michael Gottlieb), he organized the Four Aces. This team took the leadership in competition and held it for the next decade.

Sally Young (1906–1970) was Life Master #17 and the first woman to earn the rank. Young earned success in open and women’s events. She is the only woman to “three-peat” in the Reisinger. Young and teammates John Crawford, Charles Goren and Charles Solomon won in 1937 and 1938. They added B. Jay Becker to the squad in 1939 and won again.

Young also won the Reisinger in 1947 with teammates Jane Jaeger, Paula Ribner and Kay Rhodes. They remain the only all-women’s team to win a major open team event.

Broadcasting Live from DCVugraph operators are needed tomorrow to

help cover the GNTs and Collegiate Championship playoffs. Those games start at 1 and 7:30 p.m.

Operators are also needed next week – Wednesday and Friday – to broadcast the Spingold and Wagar knockouts (likely starting times noon and 7 p.m.)

As a vugraph operator, you will get a front row seat at the premier events of the tournament. It is thanks to vugraph operators and BBO that audiences all over the world are able to enjoy these bridge championships. Players onsite appreciate the coverage as well.

ACBL pays vugraph operators $100 a day. Vugraph maven Jan Martel will be happy to arrange training if you need it.

earned. That declaration set off a series of actions that

resulted in accusations and procedures against other pairs and had bridge organizations scrambling to devise better methods for protecting the game’s integrity. “It was a wake-up call,” said Graves. “We are all responsible to build the culture or sportsmanship.”

Brogeland, 43, told the gathering that the sportsmanship award is one of the few he follows routinely because the concept of fair play “has always been closed to my heart. To receive this award is a huge honor.”

The Norwegian star offered thanks to a variety of people, including his grandparents, who introduced him to bridge when he was 8, a math teacher who inspired a love of the game, family members who supported his interest in bridge “and especially my wife, Tonje, who has been a rock during the turmoil since last August.”

Brogeland also thanked “all the bridge players around the world who rose to the occasion, looked at videos, checked for possible codes and supported the war on cheating.” He praised the ACBL and the European Bridge League for combining forces in the war against cheaters.

As for “where we go from here,” Brogeland said, “I hope to see a game which emulates what Sidney Lazard and his son stood for: Play hard but fair and hold no grudges. Let bridge be a game with integrity, where active ethics is the norm.”

Gene Saxe and Augie Boehm, two of Smith’s close friends, reminisced about his accomplishments, his warm personality and wide variety of interests.

Saxe related that Smith, who died in 2010, didn’t think he deserved the Blackwood Award because he did no more than many others in working for bridge. “There was an astonishing depth to his contributions,” said Saxe. Smith was an original member of the Precision Team, worked as contributing editor and then managing editor of ACBL’s Bridge Bulletin, helped establish the Cavendish Invitational Pairs and was editor of the syndicated Goren bridge column and the official publication of Greater New York Bridge Association.

Smith also edited bridge books, played in charity games and volunteered where he was needed. “He was a wonderful, gentle man,” said Saxe. “He did a lot behind the scenes. Tom was a good guy.”

Boehm and Smith worked together to update a Charles Goren book, “Goren’s Bridge Complete.” Said Boehm of his friend, “From the early 1970s, I looked up to Tom. One of his enduring traits was his warm personality that always surfaced no matter the circumstances. Bridge was his life and I don’t think he would have it any other way.”

Mike Passell and Mark Lair, fellow pros and longtime partners, told stories about Wold, attesting to the truth of the anecdotes.

Passell said he witnessed an action Wold that was “the bravest bid ever made.” Wold was playing with a woman whose bidding was suspect, and when she opened 5♣, Wold had a decision to make holding

Grand National TeamsThe Grand National Teams is a North American

contest with all 25 ACBL districts participating. In 1985, the event was subdivided into three

separate events: Flights A, B and C. Another change came in 2001 when the GNT Championship Flight (for players with more than 5000 masterpoints) was created. Effective 2014, Flight A changed from being capped at 5000 masterpoints to having an upper limit of 6000.

The winners of the Championship Flight are honored by the Morehead Trophy, donated by The New York Times in memory of its longtime bridge editor, Albert H. Morehead. The winners of Flight A are honored by the Goldman Trophy, named in honor of the late Bobby Goldman.

Albert H. MoreheadMorehead (1909–1996)

was born in Flintstone GA and educated at Baylor and Harvard. Ely Culbertson hired him in 1932 because of his outstanding ability as a player and analyst and made him technical editor of The Bridge World in 1933.

He proved so invaluable that in 1934 he was made general manager of all Culbertson enterprises. He was only 25 when he played on the Culbertson team that defeated the British in the second international match for the Schwab Cup.

Morehead was the first bridge editor of The New York Times with a Sunday column from 1935 and a daily column from 1959. He resigned from the Times late in 1963 to devote full time to writing, editing and publishing of the dictionaries, encyclopedias and thesauruses that made him one of the foremost American lexicographers.

During those years, Morehead found time for tremendous service to organized bridge. He was an officer of the United States Bridge Association when that organization amalgamated with the American Bridge League in 1937.

He became a governor of the newly formed ACBL and served as president in 1943 and chairman of the board from 1943 to 1945. He was named ACBL Honorary Member in 1946.

Morehead was a member of the National Laws Commission and was in charge of production of the International Laws of Contract Bridge. He was also the author of the constitution of the World Bridge Federation — the first formal definition of the scope, structure, powers and duties of that organization.

Morehead was named to the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bobby GoldmanBobby Goldman (1938–

1999), who became a member of the ACBL Bridge Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, enjoyed a stellar career as a player, author and theorist. His tournament record is impressive. He earned four world titles (the Bermuda Bowl in 1970, 1971 and 1979 and the World Mixed Teams in 1972) and 19 North American championships: the Life Master Men’s Pairs (1964); the Life Master Pairs (1968); the Open BAM Teams (1993); the Men’s Teams (1968, 1989 and 1991); the Spingold Knockout Teams (1969, 1978, 1983, 1986 and 1988); the Reisinger BAM Teams (1970, 1976 and 1980); the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams (1971, 1973, 1978, 1997 and 1998). Goldman also had 13 second-place finishes in NABC events.

At the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame, Goldman was an ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 25,700 masterpoints, and ranked ninth on the all-time list of masterpoint holders. He was also a WBF World Grand Master.

Goldman authored several books on the game, including Aces Scientific and Winners and Losers

at the Bridge Table. His contributions to bidding theory include Super Gerber, Kickback, Exclusion Blackwood and Goldman after Stayman. He was one of the principal architects of the Aces Scientific System.

Goldman served as ACBL recorder from 1986–1988 and was a longtime member of the Competitions and Conventions Committee. His views on the game helped shape the modern-day Alert procedure, the ACBL convention chart, ethics and the appeals process.

Goldman was honored by the ACBL by being named the 1999 Honorary Member, presented for long and meritorious service to bridge.

Goldman’s early career was distinguished by his association with the now-famous Aces, the professional, Texas-based team created by businessman Ira Corn for the purpose of winning world bridge championships. Goldman was a member of the successful squad until 1974.

including 15 North American championships, but got the most from Silodor Open Pairs victory in 2005 with Bob Morris, his life partner. “It’s the happiest he’s ever been,” said Passell.

Recalling the world Senior teams in Bali, Indonesia, in 2013, Passell said Wold broke the coughing code of two members of the German team that won the event. The Germans were later found guilty of cheating and the team was disqualified, giving the gold medal to the U.S. squad.

Lair recalled a 1977 Houston regional, during which the legendary Curtis Smith approached him to talk. Smith told Lair that he had observed Wold playing and declared him to be a “bridge genius. He will be better than me and in time will be the best player in the country.” To Lair, that was a shocking statement. “Everyone who knows what a great player Curtis was knows what a compliment this was to Eddie.”

Lair added: “I could go on and on about what a great player Eddie is, but when I think about Eddie’s God-given talent, what stands out most is his ability to slow down, switch gears and solve the most challenging declarer-play and defensive problems. Time after time, he executes in the clutch.”

Wold expressed gratitude to be voted into the Hall of Fame and to Lair and Passell, “two of my

GNT: Flights B and CQualifications for teams participating in the

Grand National Teams Flights B and C were earned in local-level events earlier this year. Flight B is 0–2500 masterpoints and Flight C is non-Life Masters up to 500 masterpoints.

Flight B winners are honored by the Sheinwold Trophy while the names of Flight C winners are honored by the Mac Nab Trophy.

Alfred SheinwoldAlfred Sheinwold (1912–

1997) was one of the greatest bridge writers in the history of the game. He was inducted into the Bridge Hall of Fame in 1996.

His syndicated bridge column was considered by many to be the best. He had a knack for getting his point across to even the least experienced players. He managed this by making sure that every column had only one main point, marking it easier for his readers to focus.

“You could read a Sheinwold column and know in an instant that nobody else could have written it,” said Frank Stewart, co-author of the column. “He enlightened and entertained players through seven decades and earned millions of fans.”

Sheinwold was an editor of The Bridge World from 1934 to 1963 and editor of The Bridge Bulletin from 1953 to 1958. He was also the author of perhaps the most successful bridge book ever written, 5 Weeks to Winning Bridge, a book that sold in the millions.

Sheinwold served as chairman of the ACBL Laws Commission from 1964 to 1975, as chairman of the appeals committees at NABCs and as chairman of the ACBL Board of Governors from 1970 to 1973. He was named ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1983.

Robin Mac NabRobin Mac Nab (1915–

1985) served as a member of the ACBL Board of Directors from 1956 to 1981. He was ACBL president in 1965. He was a past president of the Western Conference, a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and a member of the executive council of the World Bridge Federation.

very best friends and favorite partners. They carried me to victory in major events.” He also credited his mother, Joan, with exposing him to card games and teaching him about being competitive. “She wouldn’t let me take back a card in Go Fish.”

He also credited Houston’s Esta Van Zant, for helping him by introducing him to Smith. “I sat across the table from him and learned how to really play a bridge hand.”

He said Van Zant also helped him with an introduction to Malcolm Brachman, a team sponsor. As a member of Brachman’s team, Wold had the chance to play with Paul Soloway, another major learning experience.

Wold made bridge news a few years ago by talking his alma mater, Rice University in Houston, into offering a bridge class for credit. The two-year stint, said Wold, “was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Wold signed off with a statement that brought the crowd to their feet: “I would give back every championship and trophy I’ve won, including this honor, if I could go back in time and learn bridge again.”

Electronic Device Policy 1.11.1 The electronic device

policy at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early!

In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which require additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

The beautiful and historic city of Budapest hosted this year’s European Team Championships. The 37 Open, 23 Women’s and 24 Senior teams played a complete round robin of 16-board matches within their own series to determine six places in next year’s World Championships in Lyon. As host, France qualifies automatically in all three series.

Mark Horton led an international team of scribes in reporting on and documenting this year’s Championships.

This was a case of missed opportunities all round.

West North East SouthStegaroiu Dumbovich Ionita Winkler— 1♣ 1♥ PassPass 2♣ 2♦ 2NTPass 3NT All Pass

In 3NT, Winkler received the lead of the ♦K, which looks best for the defense. He won and played a heart, and East won to clear diamonds, everyone having played accurately until now. However, West pitched a spade here, rather than a club. At this point Winkler gave up, conceding a heart for East to cash out.

Had declarer cashed the ♠K, needing to find a bare queen to his right, a miracle would have ensued! He could then have won the ♠K, taken the ♣A, led the ♠8 to the ace, the ♠9 to the jack, and endplayed West with his last spade, having carefully preserved his ♠2.

In the four-card ending, both West and North would have been down to all clubs. Declarer could have won the club return cheaply in dummy, exited with a low club, and collected the king and jack for nine tricks. West needed to pitch a club on the third diamond to prevent this from happening.

When Hegedus doubled 3NT, Florin retreated to 4♣ and Hegedus doubled that, too. After the “normal” top heart lead, this contract was also cold! The ♠Q shift came too late. To make 10 tricks, declarer must ruff a heart, cash the ♣A, ruff a heart, cash out the spades and the ♦A and then ruff a spade. At this point, with all his low trumps home, he could exit in a plain suit and collect six trump tricks, three spades and the ♦A.

However, when declarer took the ruffing finesse in hearts at trick three to pitch a diamond, he could take no more than nine tricks. No swing.

Winkler led a low spade. Declarer won in hand and led a diamond to South’s ace. South took the ♠A, and when the jack did not drop, led another spade. Declarer won with the jack in hand and led a diamond to the king, followed by the ♦J … and North, who had started life with queen-fourth of diamonds, ducked it. Curtains for declarer when the heart finesse was wrong. Of course, with the sight of all four hands we would all have unblocked the ♦J under the ace, wouldn’t we?

(Declarer could have recovered by taking the club finesse when in hand with the second spade, eventually endplaying North to lead into the ♥A J, but that would have been somewhat illogical.)

This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and

approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Use of the bidding box— Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

of the 2016Fall NABCin Orlando

The Northern Virginia Bridge Association, Unit 218, is proud to support the Summer 2016 NABC in Washington DC with our sponsorship of this first full day of the tournament. We hope you will enjoy yourselves at the bridge table and enjoy our city!

IN MEMORY OF HIS CADDYING TIMES: DAVID CAPPELLETTI FRIDAY-SATURDAY

MORNING COMPACT KOSponsored by Friends of David CappellettiA caddy par excellence, David always smiled and

greeted the players even if they never returned his greeting or his smile. He enjoyed watching us slowly react in kind when he brought boards or pickup slips back in the days when we used them in pair games. He was always helpful and pro-active in doing whatever needed to be done without being asked. We are sure he would be here in DC with us out of nostalgia if he could.

THE BETTE DUDKA FRIDAY-SUNDAY MORNING SIDE GAME SERIES

Sponsored anonymously in memory of BetteBette Dudka was a long-time volunteer in the

DC area, acting as NVBA Unit President, NVBA Recorder, District 6 Secretary, and President of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference (MABC). She also represented District 6 on the ACBL Board of Governors for many years. Her favorite role was as NVBA Sectional Tournament Chair and MABC Regional Tournament Chair, positions she held for almost 20 years. She was a Member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee, and a Gold Life Master at the time of her passing in June 2006.

IN HONOR OF NVBA VOLUNTEERS A/B/C OPEN AND GOLD RUSH PAIRS

Sponsored by the Northern Virginia Bridge Association, Unit 218, in tribute to its wonderful

Volunteers!NVBA, with more than 1500 members, takes

pride in its many efforts to promote and strengthen our wonderful game. As well as maintaining a

thriving weekly unit game and four highly successful (450-table) sectionals each year, we have long been active in programs to foster bridge at local middle schools and high schools, including a special effort that matches youngsters with senior citizens at a local retirement community. Our annual Life Master-Non Life Master game, pairing learners and experts, consistently attracts our biggest table count of the year, often upwards of 50 tables! We support one of the top fund-raising teams for The Longest Day.

When you’re in the area, get in touch and we can find you a welcoming club game any day of the week!

IN MEMORY OF GAY AND MADAN NANDA OPEN AND GOLD RUSH PAIRS

Sponsored anonymously by a grateful local player“The July 22 Open and Gold Rush Pairs have

been named to honor Gay and Madan Nanda, who both passed away within the last couple of years. They were long-time players, and many NVBA members remember them as avid club players. Gay was a Gold Life Master, and Madan was just a smidgen short when he passed away. Madan and I played twice a week and went to several tournaments together as I was getting started in duplicate bridge. I grew fond of both of them, and I owe much to Madan for his kind patience and gentle teaching. It is a privilege to be able to express my thanks to them both in this way.”

NORMA PIERZCHALA FRIDAY-SATURDAY BRACKETED KO TEAMS

Sponsored by Mary Louise Viereck

“I am paying tribute to a District 6 member of long standing. I met her in 1999 when she gave me my first bridge lesson. Since then, she has been my mentor and my friend. She always has a smile on her face and is

complimentary to everyone. She has been an officer, a director, a teacher and a player. I have seen her handle “Zero Tolerance” cases in a very diplomatic manner. Norma is always ready to assist other directors in a myriad of ways. In addition to all of her wonderful qualities, she also makes excellent fudge!”

IN MEMORY OF HIS SMILE: THE DAVID CAPPELLETTI SIDE SWISS TEAMS

Sponsored in loving memory by his extended family

David Cappelletti, who died in December 2014 at age 25 after a two-year battle with brain cancer, had a lifelong association with bridge. At just a month old, David “kibitzed” from his baby carriage while his parents played in a local tournament, an event noted at the time in a humorous New York Times column by Alan Truscott. While his at-the-table bridge experience was limited to caddy games, midnight Swisses and as a fill-in partner in novice games, David caddied hundreds of tournaments throughout his school years and was the NVBA unit game caddy for six years. A lifelong “night owl,” David was a regular at after-game NABC and regional events throughout his life and often commented on how interesting bridge players were away from the table. David believed that everyone we meet has a story worth knowing and something to teach us. The bridge world helped him learn that truth. We hope that you’ll remember David with us today with a smile for a fellow bridge player – it’s a great way to start a conversation.LOVIN’ THAT MUSIC: DAVID CAPPELLETTI

Music, smiles, and goodwill towards all—that is how we all remember David.
