On behalf of myself, the executive committee of the Board of Directors, ACBL management and the 168,000 other members of the League, we salute committee members Peter Boyd, Dennis Clerkin, Bruce Ferguson, Bob Glasson, Robb Gordon, Kevin Wilson and Eddie Wold. And special thanks to Bart Bramley for his passionate desire to not only stamp out such behavior, but to inform everyone of the dedication of his committees. The committee members knew what they were facing, and the responsibility of the future of fair play in bridge was in their hands.

I assure you that management and the Board, with the help of the extraordinary volunteers such as these members of the EOC, will continue to make sure the game of bridge is conducted on level playing fields, and that those who would connive to play otherwise will face the maximum penalties available.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Take all your chances at bridge

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ J 6 4 3 Vul: Both ♥ A 3 2 ♦ Q J 3 ♣ 10 4 2

♠ 7 5 ♥ K Q J 8 7 5 ♦ A 4 ♣ A K 5

West North East South 1♥ 2♦ 2♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

West starts with the ♠A, ♠K and a low spade, East playing the 10, 8 and then the 9 when you play low from dummy. You ruff the third spade and play the ♥K, both following low. Now what? Plan the play.

The idea is to set up a diamond for a club discard, but there is a catch. After both follow to the first heart, it is safe to cash a second high heart from your hand. If East shows out, play the ♦A and a diamond and use the ♥A to get to dummy’s high diamond for a club discard. Play the same if hearts are 2-2.

The catch occurs when West shows out and East has three hearts. If you play the ♦A and a diamond and West has a six-card diamond suit (likely) and East a doubleton, West wins the king and leads a third diamond for East to ruff. You can overruff, but you are stuck with a club loser; down one.

The trick is to lead a low diamond (the key play) after cashing the ♥K and ♥Q. West goes up with the ♦K, but can’t give East a ruff because East still has another diamond. Whatever West returns,

cash the ♦A, enter dummy with the ♥A and pitch a club on a high diamond.

If East turns up with all four hearts, run your hearts, reducing to the ♦A 4, and the ♣A K 5, dummy having the ♦Q J and the ♣10 4 2. Now play the ♣A, ♣K and the ♣5. West will almost certainly be down to the ♦K x and three clubs. If West has the ♣Q and fails to unblock or if West had the misfortune to be dealt both missing club honors, you lose one more trick, the ♣10 turning out to be a big card. The full deal:

♠ J 6 4 3 ♥ A 3 2 ♦ Q J 3 ♣ 10 4 2 ♠ A K 2 ♠ Q 10 9 8 ♥ 4 ♥ 10 9 6 ♦ K 10 9 7 6 2 ♦ 8 5 ♣ Q 9 8 ♣ J 7 6 3 ♠ 7 5 ♥ K Q J 8 7 5 ♦ A 4 ♣ A K 5

For this tournament, the anecdotes you’re used to seeing at the beginning of the column are replaced by a Quick Tip at the end. Enjoy.

Building a partnershipBy Brent Manley

I once played in a strong teams event at a regional with my wife, Donna, who remains my favorite partner. We worked hard on our partnership and rarely made mistakes with our agreements.

At one point, we faced a team of pros with thousands more masterpoints than we had. We won because the pair we faced, not regular partners, missed a slam when one of them couldn’t remember whether they played a convention that would have helped them out.

They were way better than we were in skill and experience, but we won because our teammates at the other table, regular partners with the same experience level we had, got to the slam.

I’ve seen it many times: Lesser players with a good partnership defeat a couple of experts unfamiliar with each other.

If you have a chance to build a partnership with someone, I urge you to give it a try. You will find that the work you put in will reap satisfying rewards. So, you ask, how do I get started?

First, find someone you like as a person, a friend you can root for and support even when mistakes are made. Trust me: You will both make lots of mistakes. Even the big shots make plenty of errors.

Make a pledge to be a good partner at all times. Since I learned some time ago how to be a good partner, the people sitting opposite me at the table play much better and we both enjoy the game a lot more.

Once you have found someone willing to work with you, decide on your system and add conventions slowly – and only after you have a complete understanding of the bids and their nuances.

If one of you has the time and inclination, start a system notebook with your agreements and follow-ups and how you plan to handle interference. Referring to your system notes can be a good memory refresher. I find that I remember things better if I write them down, creating a mental picture for reference.

It helps if one of you is conservative, the other more aggressive in the bidding. The balance keep your partnership from routinely bidding too much or too little.

Make sure your notes include defensive bidding and defensive carding. It’s best to keep things simple in the beginning, but you can branch out as you gain experience and become used to each other. The teamwork involved in playing good defense is the most satisfying aspect of my successful partnerships.

Practice bidding. Donna and I used to take the hands from the Bridge World’s Challenge the

Champs to breakfast every Saturday and Sunday and use them to practice our system. We also used a random deal program to set up situations we were likely to encounter – e.g., interference over our strong 1♣ openers. Bridge Base Online has a bidding practice feature that is free to use. Check it out at bridgebaseonline.com

Quick TipDefense at bridge is seen by many as the

toughest part of the game. You can make it less difficult by giving signals with the cards you play. I have noticed, by the way, that many new players don’t signal at all. The only thing I have seen that comes close is the tendency of some players to discard from a suit they want partner to lead. Even the ♥2 means “lead a heart.” You must spend some time learning about how to get partner to lead your suit or continue leading his, how to let partner know what to play by discouraging discards in suits you don’t like. More on signaling tomorrow.

Goodwill

member of the Aileen Osofsky ACBL Goodwill Committee. I’m so proud of her.” Robertson is manager of ACBL’s Club and Member Services.

Before telling the story of Robertson and Mrs. Anderson, Hartman reported on the results of this year’s Longest

Day fundraising efforts. As of July 25, ACBL has raised $675,000 for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to fund research and treatment efforts. Since the ACBL and the AFA formed a partnership three years ago, ACBL has raised $2.5 million from special Longest Day games from coast to coast.

Goodwill Committee Chair Sandy DeMartino started the meeting by introducing her newest co-chair, Richard Brown of Easley SC.

When DeMartino called on ACBL President Ken Monzingo, he praised the woman after whom the committee was named. “Aileen took goodwill to another level,” he said, “and her message about goodwill should stay with us. Wear your Goodwill pins proudly. The message is not special unless you pass it on.”

Margot Hennings, NABC chair, was up next, and she extolled the virtues of the cadre of volunteers contributing to the smooth-running Summer NABC in Washington. Hennings said “many terrific folks have given so much” as volunteers, making it difficult to single out one in particular. That said, Hennings added, one of them has stood out.

“There is always someone who works behind the scenes,” she said. “She has a strong work ethic, puts in extra work where others would stop, and she has a strong sense of responsibility. She is also a master at identifying and solving problems. Lucy McCoy has been a hands-on worker for 25 years.”

With that, Hennings and DeMartino presented a surprised McCoy, of Annandale VA, with a certificate of appreciation from the Goodwill Committee.

DeMartino announced that the committee is now accepting nominations for Goodwill Member of the Year.

She closed the meeting with a plea to committee members: “Be competitive but be friendly, caring and ethical.”

Schuler• When talking to a wheelchair user, grab your own

chair and sit at their level. If that’s not possible, stand at a slight distance, so that they aren’t straining their neck to make eye contact with you.

• If the service counter is too high for a wheelchair user to see over, step around it to provide service.

• If your playing site has different routes through it, be sure that signs direct wheelchair users to the most accessible ways around the facility. People who walk with a cane or crutches also need to know the easiest way to get around a place, but stairs may be easier for them than a ramp.

• If the nearest public restroom is not accessible or is located on an inaccessible floor, allow the person in a wheelchair to use a private or employee restroom that is accessible.

• People who use canes or crutches need their arms to balance themselves, so never grab them.

• Mobility-impaired people may lean on a door for support as they open it. Pushing them or quickly opening the door may cause them to fall. Even pulling out or pushing in a chair may present a problem. Always ask before offering help.

• These days, more and more of our seniors are having mobility issues. Awareness can go a long way to ensure they have an enjoyable, stress-free experience.

• I have learned through my own experience with this, and hope this gentle reminder helps others.

WBF president has full plate

A little more than a month away from the start of the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw, Poland, World Bridge Federation President Gianarrigo Rona was feeling the pressure of that tournament, plus the World Youth Teams Championships about 10 days from now and the cheating scandals still reverberating nearly a year after Boye Brogeland dropped his bombshell.

“We are really under stress,” said Rona, one day before flying off to Salsomaggiore, Italy, for the World Youth Teams Championships. He was, however, pleased to say that the youth tournament will be attended by 68 teams from 31 countries. Five of the teams will be from the United States. All eight WBF zones will be represented.

Before departing, Rona took time to tout the tournament in Poland, where security will be tight in light of the terrorist incidents in Europe in recent months. “Terrorism has affected attendance,” he said, “and there have been some problems with visas.”

Rona said, however, that the Polish Bridge Federation is on top of security issues, and entrance to the playing areas will be strictly controlled.

As for the playing schedule, there will be four categories of teams – Open, Women’s Seniors and, for the first time, Mixed. Each country will be allowed to send one team per event. Players on teams eliminated from teams events can drop into the pairs.

In the pairs – Open,Women’s Mixed and Seniors – each member of a pair must be from the same country but there are no quotas on the number of entries per country.

Wroclaw is the largest city in western Poland and has been designated for 2016 as a European Capital of Culture city. For a full year, each city so designated organizes a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension.

In Wroclaw, the local organizing committee has worked with local hotels to offer attractive rates for the world championships. Visit http://worldbridge.org/hotels-accommodation.aspx to learn more about accommodations in Wroclaw.

Rona’s visit to Washington included meetings with ACBL officials about security issues and coordination of efforts to detect and deal with unethical behavior. “We are working together,” he said.

Life Master newsRobert Bell of

Silver Spring MD became a Platinum Life Master (10,000+ masterpoints) playing in the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs with Lou Reich of Wheaton MD. Bell is a retired sociologist who learned bridge in junior high school and took up duplicate at age 30. His best finish in a North American championship is second in the 2001 NABC+ Fast Open Pairs, playing with Earl Glickstein.

Richard Distlerath of Bluffton SC earned his gold card playing in the Friday Gold Rush Pairs with Kristi Menees of Hilton Head SC. Distlerath, needing just a fraction of a gold point to become a Life Master, overdid it by coming in fifth overall in the event to earn 5.36 gold points.. He and Menees came to Washington to take the Teacher Accreditation Program.

Careful planningBy Barry Rigal

At many tables, I’m sure, East-West bid unopposed to 2♠, but this was the auction at our table. Dlr: South ♠ 3 Vul: E-W ♥ 4 3 2 ♦ J 10 9 8 ♣ A K 9 7 6 ♠ K 6 5 ♠ A J 9 8 2 ♥ K Q 9 5 ♥ 7 ♦ Q 6 4 ♦ A K 7 3 ♣ J 4 2 ♣ 10 8 3 ♠ Q 10 7 4 ♥ A J 10 8 6 ♦ 5 2 ♣ Q 5 West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♠ 2♥ (!) Dbl 3♣ (1) 3♦ Pass 3♠ All Pass

(1) Fit-showingSouth led the ♣Q. When it held, he should

cash the ♥A, then play a second club to let North play three more rounds of the suit. On this defense, North-South will get two more trump tricks. If declarer discards, the ♠7 forces the king; if he ruffs in hand with the 8 or 9, South simply pitches a second diamond. Either was, the defenders collect plus 200. Of course, if you don’t cash the ♥A, declarer pitches his heart on the fourth club. Should declarer get the spades right if the defense goes passive? I think so.

Economy of discardsBy Barry Rigal

This deal comes from the second final session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs (hands rotated). Dlr: South ♠ K 9 3 2 Vul: None ♥ 9 7 ♦ 9 8 6 3 ♣ Q 10 4 ♠ J 7 6 4 ♠ A 8 5 ♥ J 8 5 ♥ K 10 3 2 ♦ 7 2 ♦ K 10 4 ♣ J 8 3 2 ♣ A K 5 ♠ Q 10 ♥ A Q 6 4 ♦ A Q J 5 ♣ 9 7 6

If you have tears, prepare to shed them now.As South, you open a strong 1NT and play

there. You are delighted to receive a spade lead – the fourth-highest 4 goes to the 8 and your 10. With so few entries to dummy, you elect to play the ♦A and ♦Q. When they both hold, you play the ♦J and East wins as West pitches the ♥5 – odd encouraging, even suit preference. A dutiful ♥10 comes through. Duck or win? You duck, West following with the ♥8. Now the ♥3 comes through. You play low again and West wins, meanly playing back a spade to the ace on your right. Now the ♥2 hits the table. What now?

At the table, declarer won with the ♥A and West discarded! No explanation was requested, but declarer didn’t believe his opponent’s partially completed convention card. The explanation? West felt unable to part with a black card and thought any card but the ♥5 might cost a trick. Right he was!

allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

On this deal from the first semifinal session of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs, St. Louis players Roger Lord and Jacqueline Sincoff had reason to regret pulling the trigger against John Rengstorff of New York City. The play was reported by Lord. Rengstorff was playing with Glenn Eisenstein.

Lord started with the ♦J to the queen and Sincoff’s king. She tried the ♣K next, but Rengstorff ruffed and played the ♠J from hand, pitching a heart when Lord played low. Rengstorff then ruffed a low spade and exited dummy with a diamond. Sincoff won the ♦A and exited with a diamond.

Rengstorff played the ♥Q from hand, ducked by Sincoff. Now a heart to the ace was followed by the ♣7. Sincoff played low and Rengstorff discarded a spade. Lord, down to the singleton ♣Q, won perforce and exited with a heart, ruffed by Rengstorff with his last trump.

At that point, declarer and Lord were down to all spades, and when Rengstorff played the queen from ♠A-Q-9, Lord was limited to one spade trick. Rengstorff chalked up plus 670, losing only two diamonds, one club and one spade, for 91.5 out of 94 matchpoints.

. . . and a hard placeThis deal from the second final session of the von

Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs was played by Rock Shin Yan and reported by his opponents. Yan was playing with Yichao Chen. Dlr: South ♠ J 7 6 5 Vul: E-W ♥ A K ♦ 10 9 8 7 2 ♣ Q 9 ♠ K 10 8 3 ♠ — ♥ 10 7 6 ♥ Q 9 8 4 2 ♦ 6 5 3 ♦ A Q J 4 ♣ 8 7 6 ♣ A 10 4 3 ♠ A Q 9 4 2 ♥ J 5 3 ♦ K ♣ K J 5 2 West North East South Chen Yan 1♠ Pass 3♣ (1) 3♥ 4♠ Pass Pass Dbl Pass Pass Redbl All Pass

Chen’s redoubled implied trust in his partner’s declarer play. Yan rewarded that trust.

The ♥6 went to the king. That was followed by the ♦10: ace, king, 5. East exited with a heart to dummy’s ace and Yan played the ♣Q to East’s ace.

Yan won the club continuation with the king, ruffed a heart, ruffed a diamond and cashed the ♣J. This was the ending: ♠ J 7 6 ♥ — ♦ 10 9 ♣ — ♠ K 10 8 3 ♠ — ♥ — ♥ Q 9 ♦ 3 ♦ Q J ♣ — ♣ 10 ♠ A Q 9 4 ♥ — ♦ — ♣ 5

Declarer led a spade up. Winning this would be futile, so West played low. Declarer won the ♠J, ruffed a diamond and exited with a club to claim plus 880.

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early!

In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which require additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

(1) 2+ clubs.(2) Artificial game-force.West led his singleton spade, for the 6, 7 and ace.

A low trump was led towards dummy, West ducked and took the second round, East following with the 6 and 9. West obviously needs to find East’s entry to obtain his spade ruff. The question is, which minor should he choose? Here he chose unwisely and led a club. Could he or should he have done differently? Had East played the ♥9 followed by the 6 that should be a clear signal for diamonds, but reversing the order might not necessarily suggest something useful in clubs. There is also the consideration that if you choose the diamond route, you need less from partner, namely just a king and not an ace. However, why not have two bites of the cherry and lead your ♦A and see what partner does? If he encourages, then put him in with the ♦K, and if he discourages stake all on him holding the ♣A.

The ♠9 at trick one might have assisted as well.

West North East SouthPeterkin Jones Sanders Jourdain— 1NT Pass 2♣Pass 2♠ Pass 4♠Pass Pass Pass

In the closed room, North/South elected to play in the other major. This was the contract at 34 of the 36 tables. It only failed 18 times. The defense started with two rounds of diamonds and West then played a low heart, taken by declarer with his king, East starting an aecho with his 9. Declarer ruffed his remaining diamond in dummy and started to draw trumps. West inexplicably discarded his remaining diamond on one of the trumps and so now declarer could complete drawing the trumps and knock out the ♥A, home free. That resulted in a surprising push.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

The 37 Open, 23 Women’s and 24 Senior teams played a complete round robin of 16-board matches within their own series to determine six places in next year’s World Championships in Lyon. As host, France qualifies automatically in all three series.

Mark Horton led an international team of scribes in reporting on and documenting this year’s Championships.

Round 5, Italy vs. TurkeyBy Jan van Cleeff

This is a “Future-of-Bridge” Quiz. With both side vulnerable, the auction is simple: North passes, East bids 4♦ (natural, preemptive), you overcall 4♥ and all pass. West leads the ♦J and dummy comes down: ♠ 10 9 8 7 6 4 3 ♥ K 5 ♦ Q 10 9 ♣ 2

♠ A Q ♥ A 10 9 8 7 4 ♦ 8 ♣ A K Q 9

You cover (should you duck?) and East wins with the king. Next comes the ♦A. You ruff with the 10 and West pitches a club. Plan the play.

If you, like declarer in real life, smell a rat, you may conclude that trumps are divided 5-0.

You carry on with a sneaky ♥7, 2, 5, which holds the trick when East discards a diamond. Now you cash your three top clubs and ruff the fourth club with the king of trumps. West throws a spade. Then you play the ♦10, which you ruff with the ♥8. At this point, whatever West does, he is (repeatedly) endplayed. So declarer brilliantly ended up with 10 tricks. This was the full board:

Board 13. Dealer North. Both Vul. ♠ 10 9 8 7 6 4 3 ♥ K 5 ♦ Q 10 9 ♣ 2 ♠ K J 2 ♠ 5 ♥ Q J 6 3 2 ♥ — ♦ J ♦ A K 7 6 5 4 3 2 ♣ 8 6 4 3 ♣ J 10 7 5 ♠ A Q ♥ A 10 9 8 7 4 ♦ 8 ♣ A K Q 9

Here’s the quiz question: Who was declarer? A. Geir Helgemo B. Alfredo Versace C. Bauke Muller D. Someone elseThe answer is D; declarer was Giovanni Donati,

the new kid on the block. At 17 years of age, Donati is by far the youngest player at the European Championship in Budapest. Looking at that deal and the fact that he plays a lot with the great Alfredo Versace, one may conclude that the future of bridge is secure in the hands of Giovanni, who is making his debut in the Italian Open Team. 4♥ was played 11

times at the EC, but Giovanni Donati was the only declarer to make it.

Round 6, England vs. LatviaBy Barry Rigal

Board 32. Dealer West. EW Vul. ♠ A 7 5 3 ♥ 8 5 4 3 ♦ Q 10 7 4 ♣ 7 ♠ K 10 4 ♠ J 2 ♥ Q 10 7 ♥ K J 6 ♦ K 9 8 2 ♦ 6 ♣ J 10 6 ♣ A K Q 9 5 4 3 ♠ Q 9 8 6 ♥ A 9 2 ♦ A J 5 3 ♣ 8 2

Both English pairs did extremely well here. Forrester and Robson reached 3NT doubled by East and ended with an overtrick after South decided it would be a good moment for the ♠Q lead. (Had declarer held two low spades instead of jack-low he’d have been right.) As it was, a diamond lead was the killer.

In the other room the auction was:West North East SouthPass Pass 1♣ Double1NT 2♣ 3NT PassPass Pass

Justin Hackett, having shown a shapely but limited take-out hand with his 2♣ call, led a low spade, and I think Jason Hackett did very well to put in the 8, forcing the 10. When declarer ran the clubs and led a heart up the defenders had arranged to keep their red aces and all their spades. Jason could shift to ♠Q, pinning the jack, and defeat the contract by one trick, for a 14-IMP swing.

In Memory of Darrell & Don Strati- Flighted A/X, B/C and Gold Rush Pairs

Sponsored in loving memory of their husbands by Betsy

Crenshaw and Margot Hennings“Don Hennings was a

long-time bridge player in the Washington DC area, but most of all he was my husband and friend. We met at one of the local clubs run by Dot and Ed Lewis for many years in Crystal City. He was a Gold Life Master who valued play in national events above amassing masterpoints since his goal was always to play well in competition against the best. His love of the game and his popularity as a partner was evident from the laughter that always surrounded his table. Although I was always the organizer and the formal bridge administrator, Don was always there supporting me in the background. For years, he lugged supplies and ran errands for the NVBA sectionals, and his smile and bartending skills graced the hospitality suite at the 4th of July Regionals in the Washington area and at the NABCS held in Washington in 1993, 2002 and 2009. Don passed away in May 2012 after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer.”

“Darrell Roos (pronounced like the flower) was a beloved husband, son, brother and generous friend. He graduated from Iowa after having much too good a time at University of Colorado. He was kicked out of kindergarten

because he refused to come in from recess. He was driving a truck on the farm at age 6. When passing as an adult, he was a rocket scientist. He was a team leader in the very first missions to Mars, Viking I and II, in the 70s. In his preferred mode, he loved to play golf, bridge and handicap the horses and watch The Simpsons. One of his favorite stories: playing in the Reisinger with an all-woman team. They started an hour and a half late due to altered states of awareness, but still finished before some of our favorite slow-as-molasses experts. He took great pleasure in presenting two of our dear (non-coffee-drinking) friends Mr. Coffee machines. What else? Oh, miss him every day.”

In Memory of Bob Hartman Compact KO Teams

Sponsored anonymouslyIn memory of Bob Hartmann, a physician,

family man, humanitarian and all-around nice guy. In bridge, Bob was the winner of the Northern Virginia Bridge Association 2009 Dave Murray Award for sportsmanship and bridge excellence, as well as an active volunteer for local bridge. A favorite partner for many, Bob was a retired Navy captain and physician with a pediatrics specialty having particular expertise in child abuse prevention and treatment. A man who did missionary work in Panama and humanitarian work in Haiti and Columbia, Bob was a devoted family man and friend to all. You are sorely missed.

In Memoriam: Carolyn Lynch “Some people read books. Some people take

walks. I play bridge.” – Carolyn Lynch. The bridge world lost one of the game’s great

supporters and a fierce competitor in Carolyn Lynch who passed away in October 2015. Carolyn was a Grand Life Master, and bridge was her favorite pastime. She told the Boston Globe, “If you gave me a dish of ice cream or the ability to play bridge for an hour, I’d choose bridge very time – even though I love ice cream.” And tournament sponsor Rusty Krauss remembers: “Carolyn and I had some lovely chats about our shared experiences growing up in southern Delaware. The bridge world has lost a dear friend.”

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention card

filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may

play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the

director. If the director determines the partnership has at

least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.
