COMMUNITY NEWS

Young minds across Daly City are teeming with the knowledge they acquired throughout the school year. For many students, the months ahead represent a sprint to the fi nish line where the reward is a well-deserved summer vacation. Alfred, Lord Tennyson famously wrote, “In the Spring, a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” If he were alive today, he could have written, “In the Spring, a young parent’s fancy heavily turns to thoughts of how to occupy their child’s summer vacation.”

Yes, parents across America are engaged in the annual ritual of registering their children in meaningful, life enriching, and affordable summer camps. Those who have lived this experience may scoff at the notion that there is such a thing as a meaningful, life enriching summer camp that is also affordable. Summer camps tend to be exceedingly expensive, no matter how life enriching they are. For example, a week at Zoo Camp runs $285 a week. Full day sports camps in the Bay Area can set you back $400 a week. And while those camps are highly respected, our very own Daly City Summer Youth Recreation Program can provide children an equally rewarding experience at a fraction of the cost–starting at just $73 a week for the all-day (8:00 am to 4:00 pm) sessions.

A complete listing of Daly City’s summer camps is included as an insert in this activity guide. If you are looking for a low-cost program to keep your children active throughout the summer, consider the variety of camps in the brochure. In addition to the Summer Youth Recreation Program (SYRP) offered at fi ve park sites, you’ll fi nd an assortment of sports camps that focus on swimming, basketball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

When planning your child’s summer activities, remember to strike a balance between physical activity and academic pursuits. Time away from the distractions of televisions, computers, and joysticks is important. You can encourage your child’s academic development by incorporating weekly trips to your local library.

Children can lose, on average, more than 20% of what they learned during the school year over the summer. Students who participate in summer reading programs are more likely to read at or above their grade level. Keep your kids’ brains active and engaged with reading and learning activities throughout the summer months at your library. Take the Summer Learning Challenge: the more books they read and the more activities they try, the better their chances at winning prizes, including a $1,000 scholarship. Choose the books you want to read or get suggestions from a librarian. Take the challenge more than once for more chances to win.

Summer Learning 2015 begins June 1 at your library. Drop by your neighborhood library to fi nd out more, sign up, and get a free book! A schedule of special events will be available at your library or online at www.dalycity.org/library in May.
