As we close the door on 2009 and step into the unknowns of 2010, we are cinching up our belts and walking boldly into new territories. We have a smaller staff than ever, but those we have remaining are looking to provide some exciting opportunities for all of you.

In a central county location between the mighty Skagit River water’s edge of Howard Miller Steelhead Park and the crashing shores of the Salish Seas of The Montgomery-Duban Headlands Park, is a field of barns surrounded by the urban confines of Mount Vernon. It is here where we will host the 2010 Skagit County Fair. Our small but dedicated crew has rallied around the challenge of making the 2010 Skagit Fair a festival to remember.

The Winter Olympics are going to fill our televisions with stories of those that have beaten all odds by rising above and beating the competition. Is there any better story than the underdog? Those of you who were lucky enough to see a hodgepodge of scrubby American kids rise up and knock down the world’s elite teams at Lake Placid in 1980, witnessed one of the greatest American underdog stories of all time. The US Hockey Team believed in their chances, even when no one else did. The scrappy US Team knocked down each and every opponent, scratching and clawing their way to the championship. The Mighty Russians watched in disbelief as the scrappy American Team swaggered to the podium to receive their gold medals, lifting them high above their heads as they bowed to the cheering throngs of onlookers.

Even faced with a smaller budget and fewer em-ployees, our Parks Team, Fair Board, 4-H Leaders, Superintendents, and Scrappy Volunteers are looking to do the same in August of 2010. Pauli Mickelson, aka Joan of Arc, and Mike McCutchin, aka Napoleon, have been doing their necessary tactical training as we move into 2010. There is a lot of preparation and planning going into the making of a successful Fair and our Parks Team is ready. Mark it on your calendar beacuse, as a Fair Manager said year after year during his tenure in the 1970’s, this is going to be the best Fair ever….

The 2010 Fair, slated for August 11-14, with the theme “Bringing it All Back Home” will have the rural traditions of old and the complex flavors of the Skagit County farming culture. Mark August 11-14 on your calendars --- It’s going to be a festival to remember.

Whether you use the trail for pleasure or as a safe commute to the rest of the county, you can be part of the effort to bring this well-loved pathway back after an arson fire damaged the trail trestle in October.

A gift to the trestle is the perfect way to honor thewalkers and bicyclists in your life. All donations go
