PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Personalised Learning Plans (PLP’s) Every child in our school has a negotiated set our goals set each term in a PLP created through discussion between the parent/s, student and teacher. Each class teacher has sent home a note for booking interview times for PLP’s.

At the PLP meeting each parent has a chance to talk about how their child is progressing and set goals for school and home to aim for before next PLP meeting of each term.

These meetings are a very important part of your child’s education and communication between home and the child’s teacher.

The meeting time is brief and provided so that the parent knows what is happening in class, what the child is achieving and what they can do to help the child achieve at school. The goals can not be set and supported unless a parent attends.

Please return your appointment booking sheet as soon as possible as meetings commenced this week and continue over the next two weeks at various times.

Clean Up Australia Day On Friday afternoon our students and teachers search thoroughly for rubbish in our playground for Clean Up Australia Day. The good news is that our playground was very clean and after covering the entire school grounds we were not even able to fill one garbage bin with all the rubbish collected.

Again the disappointing result was that people outside our school, those that leave rubbish on the footpath, front entrance, front bus stop and along fence, were responsible for most of the rubbish collected.

Let’s hope that the message is spreading to many more than just our students about littering and we continue to see our school in such a clean state

Student Representative Council (SRC) The SRC meet each fortnight on Fridays after lunch and provide the voice for their class on decisions and opportunities in our school. SRC members represent all students in the school and organise ways for students to participate and contribute to their school community.

At Fridays meeting a lot of suggestions were presented by the class representatives and the first event for 2016 was organised which will be a “Footy Colours Day” scheduled for this Thursday 10th March. The group suggested this day to raise money for the Red Cross Fiji Appeal after cyclone Winston destroyed many homes and schools. They thought this would be a fun way for our students to assist with the appeal.

Representative Sports Trials We are entering the trials season for many sports and some parents will see numerous notes flooding home. As these events are organised from outside our school and run as additional school activities parents are responsible for organising and supporting involvement. If there are significant numbers of our students attending then we may arrange transport with school bus.

We attempt to get notes and information out as soon as it is received, which is often at short notice, and distribute information only to those that have a level of expertise that would make it possible for them to play successfully in a representative team.

School Sports Knockout Competitions Over the remainder of Term 1 and Term 2 the school will be competing in a variety of sporting competitions in the state knockouts. Newling has entered the competitions in Netball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Mixed Soccer, Boys and Girls Basketball and Boys and Girls Touch Football.

The competitions are all knockouts and games must be arranged and played with set times some arrangements and notes will often be ‘last minute’ at times due to waiting on matches and results from other teams before the next match can be organised. We thank you in advance for your patience and assistance with returning many notes. We are lucky to have our bus to be able to get to and from all these games and compete in these competitions.

If you are able to help with coaching or training any of these teams and have expertise in these sports, we welcome your assistance. Please contact Mr Cox to discuss.

Star Awards “You’re a Star Award” certificates were presented to a successful students who have been using the You Can Do It keys to success and demonstrating persistence, resilience, organisation, getting along and confidence.

Congratulations to our recipients: Jacob, Raymond, Judith, Jessica and Marrenyinka.

Students who earn a Star Award are given access to the Star Room at lunch times for the week in recognition of their efforts each day at school.

Murray Cox Principal

LIBRARY NEWS

Students from K-6 at Newling are invited to join in the 2016 Premiers Reading Challenge. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read a variety of books.

The Challenge runs from Monday 7th March and closes on the 26th August. During that time students need to read 20-30 books (depending on their Year level) from the approved reading list. Students who succeed in reading the required amount during the time will receive a special certificate and recognition for their persistence and efforts.

Participating students can keep track of their performance by recording on their Personal Reading Log which will be kept in the Library. Specially marked, approved, books are available for borrowing in the Library.

Open a book kids. Let’s read!!

5/6 Bush Challenge

Last week on Wednesday March 2 students in 5/6 were involved in working out bush challenges in a small group. Challenges

included navigating through the forest, building a shelter and cooking their own lunch. The program is designed to give stu-

dents a chance to develop and hone social and emotional capabilities, including Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along, Re-

silience and Confidence. This excellent program complements our You Can Do It program.
