ForewordHow busy is your life? Modern society today dictates a 24/7 lifestyle. One that is ‘full on’ from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep you are constantly on the go. There is always something to be done, something to get sorted, someone to speak to and a long list of tasks and jobs that are still waiting to be completed before you even step foot outside of the house! Our lives are full of and filled with ‘stuff’, whether related to work, our leisure time our families, we are constantly on the go, with little time to slow down or even take a minute just to stop and take a moment, to reflect, to take time for ourselves.

We all have different pressures on our lives and on our time and as a result we can often feel pulled in different directions faced with difficult decisions as to what has to give when time is squeezed so much that it is simply isn’t possible to fit everything in. Do you feel that at times you are simply running on ‘empty’? How can we address this? How can we re-fuel our spiritual lives so that our ‘tank is fuller?’

We can take our lead from Jesus. The draws on Jesus’ time was no less intense, as people would flock from far and wide just to catch a glimpse of Him or to hear Him speak. We read in Luke 5:16, ‘But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.’ Jesus models for us (even though He was God in the flesh) that we must be prayer full! Jesus could not have been grace-full and power-full had He not been prayer-full.

Our ability to be thankful, purposeful, helpful, careful, faithful and fruitful is directly reliant upon our ‘prayer-fullness.’ If we want to experience life in all its fullness – we need to be prayerful, and find and make the time to pray often, to make it an important and regular part of our lives.

If we are to be ‘full’ and not ‘empty’, if we are going to be able to respond when people need us and when Jesus needs us, then we must be prayerful. We can’t wait until the need arises and then try to rapidly fill up. We must be prayerful ahead of the need. I hope that this Cycle of Prayer provides a structure that helps you to respond to this and to make the time to be prayerful in your busy life.

Chris Penn - Diocesan Director of Education

WelcomeI’m grateful to the friend who years ago introduced me to ‘Blue Light Prayers.’ The idea is very simple: he stopped and prayed a silent prayer every time he heard or saw an emergency vehicle with its blue lights flashing and its siren blaring. He prayed for the people to whom the vehicle was rushing and for the staff determined to intervene for their good. In the years since I’ve tried to emulate his example.

‘Blue Light Prayers’ are an example of intercession as a response to urgency. Often our prayers will be like that. It’s right and proper to turn to prayer in times of emergency and crisis. But those aren’t the only times to pray for other people. This publication centres on one such other prompt: our belonging together in Christ.

Through the course of a year we pray for every parish within this diocese, for people, efforts and events that are part of our life together, and for things marked by the wider community we as the Church are called to serve. In our prayers we acknowledge our concern for each other, conscious of God’s concern for us all. Our intercessions aim to be an expression of God’s loving call to us all.

Those prayers are always enhanced by a little detail and colour to spur our imaginations and memories. Please consider offering something to be included here. Yes, space is always limited, but nevertheless most words submitted generally find in place in the Cycle. So, why not send in a few words to help sustain our belonging as a community of faith? Submissions should be made to [email protected] (and by 14th May for the next edition).

Christopher BurkettEditor and Director of Ministry

22 April - Vocations SundayFourth Sunday of EasterToday is the launch of the campaign ‘The Great Vocation Conversation.’ The challenge is to every Church minister, lay and ordained, in parishes and chaplaincies all over England, to have at least one conversation about vocation each month with someone different to themselves. Ministers are urged to sign-up to the campaign on the Church of England’s website, and will receive a regular devotional update to support their efforts.

The campaign is part is part of a determined move to get more and more people talking about what God is calling them to. As the campaign briefing puts it, ‘Each of us has a unique part to play in building the Kingdom of God, and we are called to dedicate our gifts and passions to this work. Vocational living means responding to God with our whole selves, watching for the movement of the Spirit. Others are often much better at seeing our gifts than we are. Personal conversation is among the best ways to uncover someone’s vocation so that it can shine out in the world.’

Pray for a good conversation about vocation that releases the gifts of all God’s people.Archbishop Nathaniel Makoto Uematsu, Primate of The Nippon Sei Ko Kai

6 May - Thy Kingdom ComeSixth Sunday of Easter

Thy Kingdom Come, focussed between Ascension Day and Pentecost (10 - 20 May), is a global prayer movement which the Archbishop of Canterbury is inviting people around the world to join. In 2017 more than half a million pledged to pray in this rapidly growing movement, across more than 85 countries. Every Diocese in the Church of England was involved.

Last year many parishes were involved locally and a group of pilgrims carrying the prayers from and for the whole diocese

journeyed from Foxhill to the all-age Beacon Event at Chester Cathedral. This year, a similar structure is being followed but with even more focus on working ecumenically. In addition, Bishop Libby and Archdeacon Ian will be dedicating the 10 days to lead Prayer Walks throughout the Macclesfield Archdeaconry. Hopefully many will join them.

Also new, is The Journey, a weekend for children in years 7 to 11 to be held between the 18 and 20 May at Foxhill House and Woodlands. From that event the young people will join the pilgrimage as it approaches Chester Cathedral for this year’s Beacon Event.

Please pray that these events go well, and for many prayers to be answered.Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit, Primate and Archbishop of All Kenya

13 May - Christian Aid WeekSeventh Sunday of Easter

The Christian Aid website (www.christianaid.org.uk/christian-aid-week) puts it this way, ‘Will you take part this year?’ For more than 60 years, supporters have organised thousands of Christian Aid Week events. From holding house-to-house collections, sponsored walks and church collections, to taking part in Big Brekkies, abseils and quiz nights – people come together from all walks of life to step out in support of the world’s poorest communities. This support makes Christian Aid’s work possible.

The website continues, ‘We are sure you share our belief that the world can and must be changed. Our belief is that we are each called to love every one of our fellow human beings. Together, we can raise money to support our poorest brothers and sisters around the globe, pray for justice and witness at the heart of our communities. We are honoured to support people of all faiths and none, and would love it if you could join us this Christian Aid Week.’

Pray for the work of Christian Aid worldwide, and for the efforts of local fundraisers in your parish.

20 May - The ComforterPentecost

‘Filled with the Holy Spirit … declaring the wonders of God’‘Rejoice, rejoice! Let every tongue rejoice!’ These words from Keith and Kristyn Getty’s song ‘Come People of the Risen King’ call not just those who are full of joy to declare the wonders of God but also those ‘weeping through the night … struggling in the fight’. If struggle is how we are experiencing life we may feel that the Pentecost account of mighty wind and blazing flames, of power to do amazing things, is not for us – at least, not today. But the Holy Spirit is also called the Comforter.

Though not the kind of comforter that we immediately think of: someone with a sympathetic word, a tissue and a hug. The word ‘comfort’ derives from the Latin for ‘great strength’. The comfort the Holy Spirit gives is the strength to carry on and the ability to praise God in tough times as well as good. If today you are full of joy and bubbling over with the Holy Spirit, alleluia! And if today you are still in the fight in spite of everything – alleluia! You too are filled by the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, the strengthener.

Pray that Christians may be able to recognise the work of the Spirit in their lives.

3 June - 20 Years of Foundations for MinistryFirst Sunday after Trinity

September 1998 saw the first cohort of adult learners begin the Foundations for Ministry course (FfM). Since then around 1100 individuals have completed the programme with its unique blend of vocational discernment alongside theological study. Its purpose has remained the same through all those years – to help people examine what God is calling them to do – its focus is always determinedly vocational. Having a clear sense of God’s calling in occupational, family or voluntary roles has proved a great encouragement to many. Others have used the course as a stepping stone towards authorised ministry within the church, and around 350 currently serving ministers, lay and ordained, began with FfM.

The pathway leading to the Church Universities Certificate (Ministry), validated by the University of Chester continues to be that chosen by most students. And the modules completed are incorporated into the subsequent awards used by both Readers and Pastoral Workers. Those who wish to can ultimately use them towards the award of a foundation degree.

Pray for those who have just completed FfM, and those who will begin in September.

10 June - FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia (14 June – 15 July)Second Sunday after TrinityFootball is full of great legends, from highly skilled players to controversial moments. One of my favourite stories comes from club, rather than international, football. In the late 1940s, when Matt Busby took over Manchester United, he told his players that winning was not enough. The people who spent all week in the dismal factories of Trafford Park deserved to be entertained. His message was ‘it’s not about you’.

Football has changed a great deal since then, of course. But there will be, in the tournament about to start, those who also think it is not about them, those who play for their fans, and even those who play for their faith.

Sadly, there will be some weary cynicism around the World Cup Finals, perhaps particularly because they are in Russia. But in place of cynicism, perhaps we might spend time reflecting on the dedication of the players, and their commitment to excellence. Neither they nor their managers will be satisfied with winning games. Their aim will be to win the game – the final. And they will press on toward that prize (Phil 3:14).

Or we might reflect on the wonder of people from many nations coming together in friendship, united despite differences, something from which we might also learn. Pray for players, fans and officials, that the World Cup may be a safe and enjoyable celebration.

Upwards of 80,000 visitors will attend the show.

The Church has an important and highly regarded place within the life of the show. It opens with a Service which will take place at 7.30 pm on Monday 18 June this year. Around 300 people attend this, and all are welcome. Andrew Taylor, the County Ecumenical Officer is the preacher.

On Show Days, “The Church at the Show” is staffed by a team of more than 30 volunteers who welcome visitors with refreshments, and church groups and organisations display all that is good about the Church in Cheshire. Without the generous support of the Agricultural Society this would not be possible.

Pray for visitors to the Church marquee, stewards, exhibitors and myself as Chaplain, not only during the show but in the days before as the marquee is prepared.

24 June - Thursdays in BlackFourth Sunday after TrinityGender-based violence is a tragic reality across the world. It is often hidden because victims fear further violence and stigmatisation. This campaign, originally provoked by the World Council of Churches (WCC) Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women, aims to give voice to the demand that women and men, boys and girls, should be safe from rape and violence in homes, schools, work places, and on the streets; indeed, in all places. The action required is simple but profound: Wear black on Thursdays. Show your respect for women who are resilient in the face of injustice and violence and encourage others to join you. Black has been used with negative racial connotations, this campaign challenges that by using black as a colour of resistance and resilience.

The campaign was inspired by:

• The Mothers of the Disappeared in Buenos Aires, Argentina who protested at the Plaza de Mayo, against the disappearance of their children during the violent dictatorship

• The Women in Black in Israel and Palestine, who protest against war and violence

• Women in Rwanda and Bosnia who were protesting against the use of rape as a weapon of war during the genocide

• The Black Sash movement in South Africa protesting against apartheid and its use of violence against black people

Pray for an end to gender-based violence everywhere

1 July - 70 Years of The NHSFifth Sunday after TrinityOn 5 July 1948 Aneurin ‘Nye’ Bevan, then Minister of Health in the Labour government, met 13-year-old Sylvia Diggory in Park Hospital, Davyhulme. Sylvia had a life-threatening liver disease and with the minister’s visit became the first patient treated by the National Health Service. Bevan declared the hospital, now known as Trafford General Hospital, open as the nation’s first NHS hospital.

Bevan believed his creation marked the most civilised step any country had ever taken. He insisted that its core principles were that it was to serve the needs of everyone, that it was free at the point of delivery, and that its work should be based on clinical need, not the ability to pay. Although from the first the NHS enjoyed huge public support, it has always been the subject of controversy for one reason or another. Indeed Bevan himself, when the labour minister in 1951, resigned from the cabinet when it voted for charges for dentistry, spectacles and prescriptions; describing the move as ‘the destruction of those social services … which were giving to Britain the moral leadership of the world.’

8 July - Sunday Praying for Weekday LivingSixth Sunday after Trinity‘When praying changes, so do hearts. Of course, you can integrate a whole-life perspective into every element of a Sunday service but the intercessions is the most obvious moment: praying for people in particular sectors week by week, or for occupations or school activities that people in your church are in, perhaps beginning with successive letters of the alphabet – ‘D’ is for dad, driver, dentist, dancer, designer, design & technology lessons etc.

Similarly, think about broadening out prayers for particular people’s pressing needs to include their missional opportunities – not just praying for a nurse under pressure in the busier winter months but also how s/he might draw on God’s resources and find ways to minister grace and love to colleagues as well as patients; praying for someone’s patience with a difficult boss and how they might change the culture of their office; praying for a young person in their football team that the way they go about things will speak of their Christian faith; not just praying for a grandparent’s health but that they might find ways to show and share their trust in Jesus with their grandchildren.’

Pray in ways that connect what happens in church on Sundays to Monday to Saturday living.

15 July - The Cathedrals GroupSeventh Sunday after Trinity‘The Cathedrals Group is an association of sixteen universities and university colleges with Church foundations. It is the only grouping in the UK higher education landscape based on ethical principles informed by faith-based values. Members share a common faith heritage and a strong commitment to values such as social justice, respect for the individual and promoting the public good through our work with communities and charities.

Within Cathedrals Group institutions there is a strong commitment to providing a high quality education for students, supporting personal and spiritual development within a challenging learning environment. Our faith-based values: contribute to a ‘whole person’ student experience; support a positive working environment for staff; link with research and knowledge exchange activities, and shape our partnerships and community engagement.

Member institutions make a significant contribution to the intellectual, cultural, social, spiritual and economic life of the communities they serve.’

29 July - Brontë 200Ninth Sunday after TrinityEmily Brontë was born on 30th July 1818, the fifth of the six children born to Maria and Patrick Brontë. After Maria’s death and the death of the two oldest sisters a few years later, the remaining children became a very close-knit unit. They neither made friends in Haworth, where their father was Vicar, nor went to school there. Of them all, Emily was perhaps the most reserved and withdrawn and had no friends whatsoever beyond the family. Her life experience was entirely confined to the family circle and with that she appears to have been happy. How extraordinary then, that she could create out of her fertile imagination, such a work as Wuthering Heights.

Like her sisters, her imaginative flair seems to have be born of their collaborative efforts in writing, the wide reading encouraged by their father, and the diverse conversation about innumerable topics that was the staple diet of the family environment. Yet unlike her sisters she appears to have been unwilling to reveal herself as an author to the outside world, preferring not to seek any recognition beyond the confines of the parsonage. She died a painful death from consumption in late 1848, just a little more than a year after the novel was published.

Pray for literature as a force for good in entertainment and education.

5 August - Ancient WordsTenth Sunday after TrinityAs a young priest I would wend my way to the house of 92-year-old Daisy to take her Holy Communion. One day, just as I said ‘Hello’ my shoulder clipped an enormous vase of flowers which wobbled on its base and shot its carnations and half a gallon of water into the only other comfortable armchair in the room.

Daisy was swiftly on the attack. ‘Clumsy’ she shouted. ‘I’m sorry,’ I said, ‘I’ll clear it up.’ So I began to mop it all up as best I could. However Daisy wasn’t finished with me yet. ‘Somebody’s got to sit in that chair.’ ‘I’m very sorry Daisy,’ I said. ‘Some people can’t do a job without creating another job, some people are born clumsy,’ she bawled.

I was on my third apology and losing my patience when I remembered to pray that old prayer, so powerful and wise:

God be in my head and in my understanding.God be in my eyes and in my looking.God be in my mouth and in my speaking.God be in my heart and in my thinking.

Sarum Primer, published 1527, probably 13th century origin.

I looked again at Daisy with new eyes. I knew she had a lot of back pain that was never far away. Maybe it was the pain that was speaking. It was only last year her daughter died, you don’t expect to outlive your own children, and maybe it was the sadness that was speaking.

When I finished my visit I kissed her on the cheek as I usually did to show her that all was well as far as I was concerned. It is a good prayer to remember, that God may be in our understanding, our looking, our speaking and in our thinking, it’s just a shame I’m so clumsy.

Pray for lasting words to express to our longings.Graham Green, Prayer and Christian Spirituality Officer

12 August - A Retreat?Eleventh Sunday after Trinity

The practice of retreat has undergone something of a resurgence in recent years. No longer a technique reserved to those of a very particular kind of spirituality, people now go on retreat for innumerable reasons. The basic idea remains as it always has been: to step aside from the hurly-

burly of life for a while and to simply ‘be’ in a welcoming and peaceful place. Those on retreat may be looking simply for quiet; or perhaps seeking time to think something through or develop a particular interest; or seeking time for reflection and personal space; or looking for ways to deepen their own spirituality or prayer. Or any combination of those things!

What all Retreat Houses have in common is a warm and welcoming atmosphere combined with the facilities for a comfortable residential stay. Whether those things are combined with personal accompaniment and direction, or space to work on technical skills, will depend on the place and time selected by the retreatant.

Our own Diocesan Centre – Foxhill House and Woodlands – offers a range of opportunities for personal retreats. You can find out more at www.foxhillchester.co.uk/whats-on/residential-retreats/

Pray for the work of Retreat Houses, and that all who might benefit from their work may do so.
