GENERAL INFORMATION

Pilot Resources. The New York ARTCC website provides many valuable resources to pilots. These resources will be especially helpful to you during the Cross the Pond event.

➢ For specific airport information visit the New York ARTCC Pilot Resource Center at http://nyartcc.org/prc.

General Feedback. General event feedback may be left on the Cross the Pond Website at http://ctp.vatsim-uk.co.uk.

Controller Feedback. Feedback for specific controllers of the New York ARTCC or the ARTCC in general may be left on the New York ARTCC website at http://nyartcc.org/feedback.

Need Help? If you feel like a controller has forgotten about you at any point while in the New York airspace, attempt one time to ask the controller for additional instructions. If they still continue to miss you, then ask ZNY_TMU for help. This procedure will minimize congestion on the frequency and ensure we provide the most efficient service possible.

Scenery. A generous controller from the New York ARTCC has created scenery for the Kennedy airport! This free scenery may be found here. Another payware scenery, called “New York Airports X” may be bought from Drzewiecki Design. We suggest using one of the sceneries

❏ It contains six New York airports - three from the largest airport system in the world (Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia) as well as three GA airports in the New York area.

❏ This product can be purchased for $38.68 US.❏ For more information or to purchase, visit:

Air Traffic Control Positions. The following positions and frequencies may be utilized during the event. This list is for planning purposes and only frequencies assigned by ATC the day of the event should be used operationally.

OCEANIC

Oceanic Clearance Procedures. If you are changed to a New York Oceanic frequency during the course of your flight, please ensure that you are referencing Skyvector.com for mandatory reporting points. It is important that you only give position reports for the waypoints that you are instructed to report. If you receive no instructions on which waypoint to report, ALWAYS report “filled in” or “solid” waypoints.

Mandatory Position Reports Only Report if Requested by ATC

➢ Pilot: "New York Radio, American 121, position report.”➢ Controller: “American 121, New York Radio, go ahead.”➢ Pilot: “Crossed PERDO at 1431Z, FL340, Mach .74, estimating SNAGY at 1531Z."

○ NOTE: In this example, there are no additional mandatory reporting points after SNAGY. If there were, you would include the NEXT mandatory reporting waypoint after your SNAGY estimate.

➢ Controller: "American 121, New York Radio, maintain FL340 and Mach .74, report over SNAGY."

While in non-radar airspace, utilize TEXT ONLY for position reports unless the controller contacts you via SECAL or voice. Always maintain your assigned Mach number. Do not change altitudes or deviate from your route of flight unless specifically authorized by ATC.

If you are within 250 NM of Bermuda (TXKF), you will be radar identified, and treated as if you are in a mainland Enroute airspace. Voice communications may be utilized in this airspace.

DESCENT & APPROACH

Crossing Restrictions. When you get close to Kennedy, Boston Center will be giving you a decent instructions to cross various waypoints at and maintain specific altitudes. Kennedy has no “descend via” arrivals, which means when Boston Center gives you a descent, you need to set only the altitude for which you are cleared to in your altitude selector window. Do not vacate a previously assigned altitude until authorized by ATC. Below are examples of what you may receive during your descent into Kennedy.

Expect to cross at FL240. Set these up in your FMS, but

do NOT descend until authorized to do so.

Expect to cross this point, at 12000 at 250 knots. Set

this up in your FMS, but do NOT descend authorized to

do so.

Expect to cross at 9000. Set this up in your FMS, but do

NOT descend until authorized to do so.

Offloading. Due to the high volume of traffic, Boston Center may elect to change your arrival. For example, you may be filed to fly the PARCH1 arrival from ENE VOR, but due to traffic, Boston Center decides to reroute you via the IGN1 arrival. Be prepared to change your FMS to the new arrival procedure and plug in the proper “expected” altitudes.

LANDING

Holding. You may expect holds in the air by Boston Center due to the amount of traffic that will be operating in the New York area. Please make sure you are very familiar with how to set up holding in your Flight Management Computer (FMC). If you are not familiar, make sure you can hold manually. If you can’t do either, let Boston Center know so that they can provide you with vectors. Boston Center will attempt to utilize published holding patterns on the arrival charts whenever possible.

Unresponsive Aircraft. Listen intently for the controller's instructions. Unresponsive aircraft often require the controller to alter operations which can result in delays. We will try and call you twice via voice, on the third try we will send you a text message. Our fourth call will be to a Supervisor for help.

Turns to Final. Aviate. Navigate. Communicate. If the controller gives you a turn or descent, it is expected that you execute such turn or descent quickly. First turn, then respond on the frequency.

Parallel Approaches. Due to the increased amount of traffic, Kennedy may operate parallel approaches for all aircraft. If this is the case, you will be staggered more than 1.5 NM apart on the parallels. Make sure to NOT overshoot the localizer course as you may cause issues with parallel traffic.

Exiting the Runway. It is expected that once you can safely exit the runway, you do so. Make sure that you review the Kennedy Airport Diagram prior to landing so that you know which way to exit the runway. Make sure your entire aircraft is clear of the landing runway after exiting. If this requires that you continue taxiing onto an adjacent taxiway, that is acceptable except DO NOT cross any runway without authorization.…

Confusion. If you are ever confused on what is expected of you, ASK the controller! We rather you tell us “we are unable to perform this approach” than to find out when it is too late.

Expectation Bias. Please do not use past experiences or assumptions to influence your taxi route. Make sure to have a pen and paper ready to write down the taxi instructions given.

Gate Information. Gates and ramps are non-movement areas in the United States. Once you are cleared to parking, you may enter the ramp and park at your discretion. You do not need to advise ATC that you are shutting down.
