Crossbow death inquest resolvedAfter a near three week hearing at the Work Place, Newton Aycliffe, the death of Shildon man Keith Richards has been ruled as a lawful killing, when he was shot by police marksmen in the early hours of May 12th 2009. Various statements and evidence was given to the panel, who had the arduous task of dissecting the infor-mation and testimonies, ultimately resulting in a fair verdict. Keith Richards was an obviously troubled man at the time of his death, threatening police with an air rifle and crossbow. Marred with debt problems, Mr Richards had voluntar-ily handed the keys to his home to the bank to avoid it being repossessed. He also feared that a looming drink-driving conviction could ruin his life, and had recently left his job as a teaching assistant at Windlestone School. His fledgling business was soon after left in tatters when thieves stole his tools of the trade. The inquest heard that Mr Richards was listed by police on their special population group after two previous self-harming incidents. After he had telephoned police several

times, first response officers John Lamb and Karen Parker reported that they had shots fired at them from an air rifle and crossbow by Mr Richards. They promptly radioed for backup and armed officers soon arrived on the scene. They positioned themselves behind a wall near to Mr Richards home and attempted to engage him but he responded by telling police “You are going to have to kill us or I will kill myself” and then firing his crossbow at officers again. Two police marksmen returned fire, killing Mr Richards. Over the course of the inquiry, which lasted nearly three weeks, coroner Andrew Tweddle called more than 20 witnesses to give evidence to the panel, building up an accurate picture of the deeply unfortunate sequence of events that led to Keith Richards death two years ago.Mr Richard’s brother, Stephen Richards has spoken out after the finding, saying “We accept the verdict of the jury, but still strongly feel it should have been possible for the police to contain the situation longer to allow

for specialist trained nego-tiators who were arriving at the scene when shots were fired.”Mr Stephen Richards also claimed that the Inde-pendent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) was still gathering vital evidence in the final minutes leading up to the start of the inquest. He said that they left an air rifle in the property and sent a glazier to repair a window they said had not been shot out, and even told him that his brother had been shot twice. He commented “They were embarrassed to be reminded they were in fact the Independent Police Complaints Commission.”The IPCC Commissioner Nicholas Long said that the findings of their in-vestigation matched that of the recently completed inquest. He said, “The ICPP accepted there were some errors and miscom-munication at the outset of this investigation and for that we have apologised. It is evident those errors added to the distress of Mr Richard’s family and that is the last thing we wanted.“As with all our investiga-tions, we will learn from any errors that have been made.”

Dear Editor,

I have recently read in the Town Crier that there are proposals which will split the town into two constituencies, and I am writing to state that this is not a correct route to take. The whole town of Shildon should be part of one constituency. The figures given on Constituency size would easily be ‘stretched’ to do this and it would make ‘common sense’.............. It is what I believe most of my fellow towns-people would prefer.

Yours most sincerely,Ron Blain, Association Street, Shildon

Four amateur dance couples are taking to the floor at Shildon Civic Hall on Friday 11th November in a bid to raise money for Ugandan children’s charity, Watoto. The couples, who are from Shildon, Bishop Auckland and Newton Aycliffe, are part of a North East volunteer group who are looking to go out to Uganda next year to work in one of the villages set up by the charity. Shildon People’s Centre in Main Street has been awarded one year’s free BT Internet access in recogni-tion of its work in allowing internet access to the people of Shildon. The award scheme, which is part of BT’s Get IT Together Campaign, offers Charitable and Community organisations who help their local community get online, the chance to apply for 12 months free BT Broadband.

The judges were impressed with the Centre’s open-door policy to using the internet, and their availability to users of the Centre’s Youth sessions of fast broadband access to help with personal and skills development. The Centre is open from 9am to 1pm to anyone who wants to get online at their own pace, and the service is now free until 1st December 2012.Simon Paul, BT Community

Byrne said, “When outstanding lessons that ‘crackle with excitement as students work hard to impress their teachers’ (OFSTED March 2011) are combined with a Key Stage 4 curriculum that allows students to follow any combination

of courses they wish, the results is the celebration of improved results for the fifth successive year.“This feat has been recognised by Sunnydale being named as one of the country’s most improved schools for the past two years. “However we have no intention of resting on our laurels and for this year we have set our targets even higher, continuing to ensure examination success for all.”

Silent auction a great successThe recent silent auction and coffee morning held at Redworth Village Hall was a resounding success and an enjoyable day was had by all. The bidding started slow and cautiously, but as time went on and momentum gained there was some furious bidding in order to secure the sought-after prizes.Indeed there was a lot of competition for the Kiefer backpack between members of the same family, which

resulted in two unhappy faces that were hopefully soon-after resolved over a cup of tea! Local Parish Councillor Lee bid on a voucher to Peaseway Skin & Laser Clinic, “so he may find people looking at him a little more closely in the future to spot if he’s had any work done!” said co-ordinator Sandra Bremner from Redworth Village Hall Association. The Mid-dlesbrough football shirt was won by a telephone

bidder after some heavy bidding. Councillor Lee then met with some com-petitive bidding from Mrs Bremner’s husband, also being a bearded gentleman, over a micro-dermabrasion voucher also donated by Peaseway.Sandra surmised “We are very grateful to our donators and also to Mr. John Clow of Barclays Bank for all of his support, donations and to Barclays Bank for doubling our money.”

Dealer found with nearly £3,000 cashA drug dealer was stopped whilst driving by police and was found to have £2,980 in his pocket. Carl Race, of Dent Street in Shildon, claimed to be on the way to buy a new car, but he was arrested and the money was seized. A search of his home later found 115.8g of herbal cannabis hidden inside a tumble drier and a shoe box on top of a kitchen unit.Paul Lee, prosecuting at Durham Crown Court, said Race claimed to make

profits from selling to friends, but only to pay off his own drug debts. The court heard how during his police interviews, he admitted the money was proceeds of drug dealing, from January of this year up until his arrest on July 22nd.Race, 33, has previous con-victions for drug dealing – caught dealing in 2003 and in possession in 2010. In mitigation Jonathan Devlin told how Race has been “a cannabis user for half his

life” who is still caught up in debt with other dealers, after signing a disclaimer to the money confiscated by police. He told the court that Race has a job waiting for him if he avoided a prison sentence.Recorder Peter Makepeace ruled that he would give Race a chance to take up his job offer, imposing a nine month sentence suspended for a year, with 18 months probation super-vision and an order to pay £340 in costs.

Shildon Running & Athletic club will be holding their annual presentation night at the Masonic Hall in Shildon on Saturday 3rd December. This year however the evening has a special significance. As well as celebrating the achievement of their athletes over the last year, the club will also be

celebrating its 25th anni-versary. Formed in the summer of 1986 the club has produced many exceptional athletes over the last quarter of a century and played a sig-nificant role in securing the funding required to build the Stadium 2000, which is situated on Middridge Lane.

Runners celebrate 25th birthday

In the month we call November, There is a special day,

When the Nation prays in homage It’s called REMEMBRANCE DAY.

They march in celebration, Those Veterans of yore,

They honour those brave men that died The men who went to war.

They fought so we would all be free To live in liberty,

We honour their great sacrifice Each year we all agree

To kneel in prayer ~ say ‘thank you Lord’ To all who went away,

Especially those who can’t return, Those buried far away.

So when you see them marching Those Veterans of old,

Remember when they all were young And daring ~ truly bold.To fight the foe of evil,

So we would all then say,Today’s the day we honour them ~

It’s called REMEMBRANCE DAY.

To all who have paid the ultimate price, We say ‘thank you’

Youth project a long time comingShildon AFC are pleased to announce that they are finally moving with the times to discover and nurture local football talent. Their goal is to one day have players in the first team who have been developed from their academy. The coaching staff are well aware that there are many young children in the Shildon area with a lot of

football talent and Shildon AFC are hoping to build on that in a positive manner. The venue and start dates are yet to be confirmed, but all hopes are that this will be announced very soon. The club are also aiming to get current players and staff involved in the project, to encourage the children to get involved in football with a professional mindset.

A spokesperson for the club commented, “We intend to hold an open night soon for parents and children, showcasing this new devel-opment and how Shildon AFC Youth Academy is going to work. “Moreover this is a great opportunity to keep fit whilst having fun, and to be coached and play football at its best right here in Shildon.”

To help celebrate its Silver Jubilee the club would like to invite as many former members as possible along to their presentation evening. Anyone wishing to attend can contact the club via email at [email protected] or by calling 07592611600.Tickets are now on sale priced £4.50.

Hills, highs and happiness!Shildon running club were celebrating over the Halloween weekend, with no more than four 1st positions and 7 promotions to the fast pack category after they ventured to Farringdon cross country on October 29th. This particular event proved to be very popular and the senior men’s event saw over 300 competitors. However, Dan Hardy (U20) powered around the 3 lap course, conquering the stream and the hills, to gain promotion to the fast pack with 1st place and an amazing time of 33.28. The second event in the North East Harrier League is a tough course and the windy conditions on the day were an added challenge. Henry Johnson, ran well and stormed up the hills to win

by 4 seconds finishing the 1 lap course in 9.33. The other members of the Under 15 team ran extremely well and they won 1st team place. Joseph Bell displayed a spurt of energy towards the end and completed the course in 3rd position with 10.19.Jake Findlay and Jack Wade showed true grit and determination and crossed the line in 11.24 and 11.54 respectively. Under 17 athlete Matt Coulthard battled the hills and crossed the stream like a true cross country runner to deserve his promotion to the fast pack after he finished in 2nd place with 21.23. The female runners showed they are a force to be reckoned with. Lizzie Cramb (U13) gained first

place, a promotion and took the lead by 20 sec, with 11.56. Under 15 girls saw Georgia Hirst battle the muddy conditions and finish the 1 lap in 13.16. Amy Etherington, took a convincing win in the Under 17/20 women’s event. Her finish time of 15.56 saw her promoted to the fast pack. Zoe Hewitson, already competing in the fast pack, had a 2min handicap. Not deterred by this, she gave it her best and achieved the 4th fastest time on the day with actual running time of 15.52. Elizabeth Wood, fast pack, competed against U20 women. She took the hills well and finished in actual time of 18.09. The Under 17/20 ladies won 1st team prize. Natalie Owens (SW) ran around the 2 lap course in 25.15.

Battle of the Grey HorsesAdrian Gough equalised against his former club. The second half saw the welcome return of Dougie Grant after being sidelined since the first game of the season, however it was another second half substitute Kev Hallimond who did the damage hitting two goals and also

hitting the post as Shildon Grey Horse played the counter attacking game to perfection.Next game home to Chilton WMC this Saturday in the cup.

Shildon AFC Manager’s commentsI am much happier following our victory at South Shields. The team is in a period of transition following the loss of several very good players during the summer, four of these are now playing at league champions Spennymoor. The players we have lost are not easy to replace. We lost three wide players who had done well for the club in our 4-3-3 formation. We thought we had replaced these players in the summer with two players who were at least their equal, however both deals fell through. I will admit that as a result of

our failure to find suitable replacements we have sacrificed our playing principles and gone a bit more direct. After long deliberation, both Stuart and I decided that we would go back attractive football and passing the ball, we will play our 4-3-3 formation and attack teams. Obviously we need to bring players in who compliment this system and the search has begun. However, we must all be patient as it will not happen overnight. Now is the time to stick together and encourage the team.
