DARING & TALENT + INVESTMENT = SUCCESS!
CALQ plays a key role in fostering Québec’s artistic excellence on the international stage. In recent years, cross-disciplinary success has been achieved by growing numbers of local artists, writers and dance companies involved in successful tours and exhibitions or as recipients of major awards.
Author Dany Laferrière is a member of the Académie française, while novelist Kim Thúy travels the world to meet with her readers and Denis Marleau stages theatrical productions at the Avignon Festival. Works by playwrights Michel Tremblay, Suzanne Lebeau and Robert Lepage are among the most performed and appreciated worldwide. Films by Denis Villeneuve and Xavier Dolan have won multiple Oscars and
Césars. Choreographer Marie Chouinard now helms the dance component of the Venice Biennale while maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin is music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Every day, Les Confidents by sculptor Michel Goulet offers fragments of Québec poetry to passers-by in the Jardin du Palais-Royal at the Centre des Monuments Nationaux in Paris.
More than just a source of pride, the international success of Québec’s creative community has an important economic dimension. Following their lead, new local talent has entered international circuits while ramping up opportunities to disseminate artistic and literary works created in Québec.

CREATORS OPEN TO THE WORLD
A large number of talented Québecers have been acclaimed on the international stage. To ensure their ongoing presence, CALQ awards travel grants designed to meet the needs of artists and writers, including:
Taking part in creative stays
Attending conferences and training activities
Performing in festivals
Extending networks of contacts
Developing new markets
Attending events
Seizing major career development opportunities
One notable grant recipient is choreographer and dancer Rhodnie Désir, who at the behest of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie presented her project BOW’T TRAIL, which emphasizes the contributions of African peoples and their descendants to global cultural diversity, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Québec’s visual artists have also been honoured at the Venice Biennale. After remarkable exhibitions by David Altmejd (2007), Raphaëlle de Groot (2013) and the BGL collective (2015) in the Canadian pavilion, artist Hajra Waheed was invited to present her work at the very heart of the main exhibition in 2017. In addition, works by Simon Bilodeau and Guillaume Lachapelle were selected for the exhibition Personal Structures – Time-Space-Existence (2015).
Guillaume Corbeil (Tu iras la chercher) and Catherine-Anne Toupin (À present – Right Now) are among the newest voices to have come to prominence in the theatrical world. After receiving travel grants to take part in
readings, these playwrights saw their works performed the following year on international stages by foreign theatre companies.
While exhibiting his ring collection (“Cristalline”) at New York’s Aaron Faber Gallery, jewellery designer Claude Pino drew the attention of a costume designer. He went on to create custom-made rings for characters in various hit films, including Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) in Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Tirana (Abbey Lee) in The Dark Tower.
Fred Pellerin, a noted figure in Québec’s storytelling community, gained distinction thanks to more than 3,000 performances of his shows, inspired by characters from his village at the centre of the French-speaking world. Meanwhile, writers Andrée A. Michaud and Patrick Senécal received CALQ support to take part in literary festivals, while Madeleine Thien used her funding to organize a writing workshop for a group of female filmmakers in Zimbabwe.

TAPPING INTO CREATIVE ENERGY
An extensive network of studios, exchanges and workshops/residencies on three continents provides creators from all disciplines with nearly 40 opportunities to boost their professional careers while staying in some 20 cities and regions worldwide, including New York, Bogota, Buenos Aires, Paris, Rome, Berlin, London, Mumbai, Seoul and Tokyo. Since Québec’s studio in Paris was inaugurated in 1965, this program has served to increase the number of exchanges with international partners and has furthered the career development of countless artists and writers.
Interdisciplinary artist Sylvie Cotton traveled to Tokyo in January 2011 to write a book on residency practice. Désirer Résider (Sagamie, 2011) testifies to her wealth of experiences, which she continues to share at international conferences, including the Kyoto Art Centre in 2017.
During a three-month residency in New York in 2012, playwright Olivier Kemeid put the finishing touches on Five Kings – L’Histoire de notre chute, a five-hour play that he began writing two years previously following a creative group workshop at La Chartreuse in Villeneuve- lez-Avignon. Larry Tremblay, who also completed a residency in New York in 2015, wrote a novel (L’Impureté) and two plays (Le Joker and Le Garçon au visage disparu), which delighted audiences in the spring of 2016.
In 2005, the career of artist Michel de Broin really took off during his creative stay at Québec’s studio in Berlin, where he made initial contacts that, a few years later, enabled him to win a contest launched by the German parliament for the creation of the public art installation Mehr Licht, which has graced the grounds of the Bundestag in Berlin since 2014.
Benefiting for the most part from the principle of reciprocity, the agreements entered into with international partners enable foreign artists and writers to immerse themselves in the province of Québec with a view to discovering its artistic and literary scenes.

PRESENT ON FIVE CONTINENTS
Québec’s creative community is characterized by its excellence, daring, originality and sense of whimsy.
Noteworthy examples of this include Cirque Éloize’s iD (which combines the circus arts and urban dance), Traces by Les 7 doigts (in which the set, reminiscent of a makeshift shelter, is made of canvas and adhesive tape) and shows by Cirque Alfonse (drawing on Québec traditions aimed at reinventing contemporary circus language).
What more can be said about the troupe Le Patin Libre, whose blend of figure skating and contemporary dance have delighted audiences in Europe, the US and Australia, or the Ligue nationale d’improvisation (LNI), which has exported its concept of theatrical hockey to over 30 countries? Following suit is MUTEK, the electronic music and digital arts festival, which in recent years has spawned offshoots in Mexico City, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, Dubai and San Francisco.
BALLETS JAZZ DE MONTRÉALBallets Jazz de Montréal (BJM) has been crisscrossing the planet for over 45 years. In 2018, the company took to the road again with eight different works, including Dance Me, a tribute to Leonard Cohen.
LE CARROUSEL HONOURED IN BRAZILStanding as landmarks in the history of youth theatre, Le Carrousel’s 30 original creations have been featured in 80 international tours over the past 40 years. Always eager to conquer new markets, the company performed the South American premieres of Trois petites sœurs and Gretel et Hansel at the Festival Internacional de Intercâmbio de Linguagens in Rio de Janeiro (2017).
LA TORTUE NOIRE COMPANYLa Tortue Noire’s Kiwi received the Chagall Award at the Spectaculo Interesse Festival in the Czech Republic in recognition of the high-quality puppetry and the work’s avant-garde qualities (2009). The production subsequently toured France and Mexico. La Tortue Noire’s latest creation, Mémoires d’un sablier, was co-produced with a Mexican puppetry company.

AN ENRICHING INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE
Serving as a catalyst for unique and daring artistic approaches, CALQ supports the hosting of foreign works and artists in exhibition spaces, performing arts venues and festivals in all regions of Québec. The public thus gains access to powerful works marked by a different cultural imprint.
Since 1992, the Carrefour international de théâtre (CIT), held in the heart of Québec City, has provided an essential springtime window into contemporary theatre with productions by hundreds of companies from various countries. In addition, Montréal’s Festival TransAmériques (FTA) features 20 world and North American premieres each year.
In addition to leading figures such as Denys Arcand, Xavier Dolan, Denis Villeneuve, Philippe Falardeau, Jean-Marc Vallée, Alanis Obomsawin and Léa Pool, Québec cinema boasts multiple filmmakers whose offerings have reaped awards at the world’s most prestigious festivals. The organization Ciné Tapis Rouge secures access to other circuits for these filmmakers by facilitating exchanges between Québec and other countries. Over the past 10 years, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain (including Catalonia), Italy, Romania, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany (including Bavaria), Brazil, Taiwan, New Zealand and South Korea have presented selections of their films in Québec while providing a place of choice for Québec cinematographic works within their own borders.
The comic strip Sky Rover, by Christine Dallaire-Dupont
(alias Nunumi), was honoured at the Japan Media Arts Festival in the
Manga category (2017). The Québec-based comic artist
attended the event and met with many specialists in her field.

MAJORCULTURAL
EVENTS
QUÉBEC IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Musical, literary, theatrical and film festivals, in addition to dance and contemporary art biennales around the world, serve as a platform for promoting artistic creation in Québec. CALQ, together with other government partners, contributes to the collective presence of artists and writers at various major cultural events.
In 2015, some 40 Québec authors and comic artists were showcased at the Foire du Livre in Brussels. Two years later, Geneva’s Salon du livre et de la presse honoured Québec writers, while Québec choreographers figured prominently at the Munich and Venice dance biennales.
For more than 30 years, CINARS has organized a Montréal biennale that has gone on to become one of the foremost international performing arts forums. Some 1,500 professionals from 40 countries attend this event, which features over 100 shows from Québec, the rest of Canada and beyond. After representatives of Art Space for Kids attended the event in 2016, the youth-oriented dance company
Bouge de là traveled to China (making stops in Beijing, Tianjing and Jinan) to present 26 lettres à danser as part of its first international tour. Forging stronger ties with foreign programmers, CINARS organizes an annual group participation series in various international performing arts markets under the Québec en Scène banner.
Confirming its enviable position on the international stage, Québec has also served as the host for major one-time events, including the 100th annual convention of the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) in 2017, as well as International Performing Arts for Youth (IPAY) in 2016 and International Artist Manager’s Association (IAMA) in 2013. These events also spotlighted the work of local creators for new audiences and gave rise to foreign distribution opportunities. Théâtre Samsara’s promotional presentation at IPAY prompted the company to venture abroad for the first time after forging ties with a Chinese distributor that invited it to give more than 100 performances in the country.
CALQ is also involved in the Commission internationale du théâtre francophone (CITF), which since its creation in 1987 has sup-ported multilateral theatrical creation and distribution projects on two continents and
in three countries. CITF has a track record of hundreds of completed projects, including Edgar Paillettes (by playwright Simon Boulerice), a co-creation and co-production of La Manivelle Théâtre (France) and L’Arrière Scène (Québec), which was successfully performed in Canada, Belgium and France. In addition, the mediation and intervention-related audiovisual activities created by Wapikoni mobile (First Nations films and music) with young Aboriginals have been acclaimed by the United Nations and used in other countries.
