Robert Sackville-WestChairman of Trustees Sevenoaks School Foundation

The Foundation is overseen by a board of Trustees which includes current and former parents and Old Sennockians, who work in close partnership with the school Governors and senior staff to determine strategic priorities.

Looking ahead, the Governors, Trustees and senior staff have set out an ambitious vision which seeks to ensure that Sevenoaks School continues to provide an exceptional education.

The support of students, staff, parents and alumni is fundamental to everything we are trying to achieve, and I am delighted that so many have chosen to join us to help make our vision for Sevenoaks School a reality.

I hope you will continue to do so.

The Sevenoaks School Foundation was formed in 2004 to support the advancement of Sevenoaks School today and into the future.

Over the past decade, the Foundation has raised in excess of £17 million, of which more than £7 million has been from individual donations. This has supported the development of outstanding new facilities for Sevenoaks School, including The Sennocke Centre in 2005 and The Space performing arts centre in 2010. At the same time, the Foundation has sought to widen access and increase diversity by funding the provision of bursaries through the school and establishing an endowment. Neither of these initiatives would have been possible without the encouragement, support and commitment of the entire school community – parents, students, staff and alumni – and I extend my thanks to all who have contributed.

Sevenoaks School has been transforming the lives of talented young people since 1432.

objectives and priorities to 2020 and beyond. We remain committed to developing an inspiring teaching and learning environment. The next two major projects, a new Science and Technology Centre and a new Sixth Form Centre, will support academic endeavour in the sciences in the digital age, and provide new study and research space for all students and staff, centred on our distinctive IB education.

Alongside these plans for the physical environment is our goal to double bursaries and increase boarding capacity. To ensure the school remains at the forefront of global education we will create three virtual institutes, for Teaching and Learning, Higher Education and Careers, and Service and Entrepreneurship. I hope you will share our vision for the future.

Thank you for your generous support and commitment to the advancement of Sevenoaks School.

During my time as Head, the Sevenoaks School Foundation has played a key role in enabling the school to realise its vision. Support from the Foundation enabled us to build the two largest and most appealing additions to our campus in the school’s modern history: The Sennocke Centre and The Space. Together, these have transformed the quality of our students’ education in the arts and in sport. Our facilities are now equal to the very best in the world, and give teachers and students an environment in which they can flourish.

The Foundation continues to play a vitally important role in bursary funding, ensuring that the school can attract and support academically talented students from diverse social and economic backgrounds. The Trustees are committed to keeping alive the spirit of our founder, William Sevenoke, by raising funds to ensure that the very best students can enjoy what can be a life-changing education.

Jasmine Lower Sixth

Student perspectives

All staff and student interviews about the impact of donations to Sevenoaks School Foundation were conducted by Jasmine as part of Service.

I have recently joined Sevenoaks School, and already the experience of a wide range of opportunities has given me the sense of freedom to be who I want to be. As an international student I have really benefited from living with students from different countries, and with it the chance to learn about new cultures and languages, and the skill of accepting and appreciating differences.

My favourite aspect of the school is the campus. The Space is beautiful yet functional, with facilities to suit any type of musician. Playing in orchestras and chamber group rehearsals never feels like a chore. It makes me feel proud and privileged to be part of this vibrant school and gives me the driving force to do well.

Maya Year 10

The best thing about being a Sevenoaks student is that it has opened up many academic and co-curricular opportunities. I find the learning challenging and enjoyable and the huge choice of activities means you can pursue almost any skill you want. I also like the way that the school has a diverse range of students but still achieves a close-knit community by helping people settle in and making them feel at home.

Elias Year 10

It’s easy to take the quality of the facilities for granted because they are so integral to my day-to-day routine; from practising the piano to playing badminton with my friends. I’m very happy to be a part of the unique and diverse Sevenoaks School community; in the same day I have given presentations to student societies about China before going on to discuss issues in Europe and Africa.

In contrast to other schools, Sevenoaks has endless opportunities for students and staff alike. I am impressed by the students’ drive and determination to achieve outstanding results academically, be challenged across the curriculum and push themselves to become excellent in any discipline. Teaching staff not only thrive and enjoy creative freedom in their subject, they become involved in co-curricular sports and club activities and as boarding house tutors. Sevenoaks School is a truly vibrant and special place and one I am lucky to call my new home.

I have seen so many changes at the school since I joined and students have benefited immensely from generous donations to provide state-of-the-art facilities. There are now much broader opportunities in sports including squash, swimming, volleyball, basketball, indoor athletics, football, cricket and tennis. I hope the school can continue to provide an excellent education, outstanding pastoral care and a varied selection of activities.

We are a school which enjoys difference. We’re co-educational, boarding and day, local and international with some 40 different nationalities, and there’s a good social and economic mix of pupils too. In my view our bright, collaborative, involved pupils are our greatest strength, and they will continue to be: the number of applicants has never been higher.

Mrs Arabella Stuart Joined Sevenoaks School in 1987Director of Admissions Biology Teacher

If you attract good students, you need good resources. I think the school and the Foundation work together to achieve this. Sevenoaks is terrific; it is exceptional, and different from traditional British schools. My hope is that more people can benefit from an education here.

Mr Alex SmithJoined Sevenoaks School in 1987Divisional HeadEconomics Teacher

Since joining the school I have been in awe of The Space. This year, the music and drama departments collaborated on Les Misérables giving me the opportunity to work on the first large-scale musical in the performing arts centre. Without the Pamoja Hall, a production of this magnitude and ambition would not have been possible. The six sell-out performances, with standing ovations every night, will be a memory that the pupils and I cherish forever.

I believe music is one of the school’s many strengths. From a young age, students have remarkable opportunities to study disciplines that range from jazz piano and French horn to Alexander technique and studio music production. Music scholarships have helped ambitious students go beyond what might be ordinarily possible. In the future I hope to give students additional musical experiences through concerts, more large-scale productions such as Les Misérables, and chamber music opportunities.

Sevenoaks School has a long and proud history of providing support to students. Indeed, the founding of the school in 1432 through a bequest by William Sevenoke was for that very purpose – to provide an education for young scholars, regardless of financial background. More recently, the school was able to support students through Kent Free Places, and many who received this type of financial support went on to great careers all over the world.

Since the end of Kent Free Places, the school has supported bursaries from its own resources, and we remain committed to William Sevenoke’s founding vision of a diverse school that offers an excellent education for all. Last year I became the school’s first Access Adviser. Much of my time has been spent cultivating deeper relationships with local primary schools to ensure that talented young students are aware of Sevenoaks School as a possible destination, regardless of their personal circumstances.

In order that Sevenoaks School can continue this proud tradition, the Governors have resolved to double our capacity for bursaries by 2021. This is a huge challenge, and to help achieve it the Sevenoaks School Foundation launched its inaugural Founder’s Bursary Fund annual appeal in 2012.

The generosity of the school community has been immense. Parents, Old Sennockians and staff have already contributed enough to offer three additional pupils full bursaries for seven years – a truly inspiring response that gives me great hope for the future.

Together we can make a difference.

Over the past decade, Sevenoaks School has steadily increased its funding for bursaries. Today, one in 20 of our students receive financial support to attend the school. Sophie Dillon, who left Sevenoaks in 2010, has experienced the benefits a bursary gives.

During her GCSE year Sophie’s circumstances changed, and without bursary support she would not have been able to continue her education at Sevenoaks. Based upon her GCSE performance and her wholehearted participation in school life, the school awarded a bursary to cover the remaining fees.

Sophie DillonOld Sennockian (2010)

‘I am extremely grateful for the gift of a bursary – it made me appreciate the chance I had been given and encouraged me to work harder. With the support of my friends and teachers I was able to aim higher. It’s important that Sevenoaks should not only be an option for those who can afford it, and bursaries are a great way of inspiring people who might not otherwise think to apply for a place at a leading IB school. The benefit of the school being more accessible is that it attracts people from different backgrounds and creates a far more interesting environment.’

In addition to her studies, Sophie was a member of the squash and tennis teams and worked for Charity Action. She achieved a high IB Diploma score and went on to study Psychology at the University of Edinburgh.

Glenn Earle holds Board or Trustee positions at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, The Royal National Theatre and Teach First and has spent more than 30 years in Finance. Glenn and his wife Phyllida’s two daughters Ginevra and Lulu were educated at Sevenoaks School and are both now teachers in the East End of London.

‘The lack of social mobility in this country is a huge issue. Many steps need to be taken to address this. Two things, though, are crystal clear: firstly, education is absolutely critical in unlocking potential and secondly, educational opportunity is not fairly distributed.’

‘I sense that Sevenoaks is an excellent institution that wants to do the right thing and has a strong meritocratic ethos at its heart. Phyllida and I wanted to help Sevenoaks do its bit for social mobility through education by giving the opportunity for some bright young people who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to experience the first-class and life-changing education that Sevenoaks can offer.’

To encourage other donors to help, Glenn and Phyllida set up a Challenge Fund offering to match donations up to a total value of £100,000. The school community responded, surpassing this target, which has opened up more opportunities to offer bursaries.

The Hands Family Scholarshiphas so far had three recipients, each receiving a bursary for thefull seven years of a SevenoaksSchool education.

‘One of the most striking thingsthat Sevenoaks School hasachieved is its commitmentto widening access anddiversity, primarily for brightchildren in the Sevenoaks area.Academic performance is oftenmore closely related to familybackground than to academicability, limiting a student’sopportunity to maximise theirpotential. This is why we decidedto support talented students fromlower income families.’

‘Each of the bursary recipientscame from the local statesystem and would not otherwisehave been able to attend theschool. It is very gratifying tohave had a meaningful impacton their education.’

The school’s commitment towidening access has seenits expenditure on bursariessignificantly increase since 2004,with one in 20 students nowreceiving financial support. Withthe continuing support of donorswe aim to double this by 2021.

Sevenoaks School Foundation

Sevenoaks School Foundation supports the development and advancement of Sevenoaks School through major capital projects, the widening of access via bursaries and the establishment of an endowment for future generations.

The Foundation is governed by an independent board of Trustees, which consults with the Head and Governors to determine the key priorities. Its primary source of income is the rent paid by the school for use of the main campus and buildings from which it operates.

The Foundation has already funded two of the most significant changes to the campus environment in the school’s history.
