For the last ten or twelve years Charl ie bad been a genera l aid to the Federa l Court Repor te r s Asso-ciation. He did many nondescr ipt e r r a n d s for the newspaper men and photographers of the associa t ion. He of ten remarked to his f r i ends whom be served that once he too had been a Marine. When he died March 18 th is year , ef for ts were made to find some relat ives to in-sure Charl ie a decent burial . None were found.

After h is body had been taken to the city morgue at Bellevue Hos-pi tal . it was announced that un-less h is body was claimed with.n th i r ty days he would be buried in Po t te r s Field.

A Federa l court r epor t e r recall-ed his r e fe rence to the Corps and contacted the Marines in New York. Burial was postponed and an intensive search of the records were made. It was late in 1940 that the eanization originated at Quan-go and was t r ans fe r r ed to Lake-irst. There were for ty men that ade the first j u m p the re in No-mber of that year . Of these men me went to Camp Le jeune and e rest to Gillespie P a r a c h u t e •aininp School. Cal i fornia , to be-n the job of making a formidable rce of Para-Marines . Within a on time the first combat platoon

was commissioned at Camp Elliot. Cal ifornia.

This first platoon of t roopers in-creased in size unt i l they became the Firs t Pa ra -Mar ine Battal ion. It was in J u n e 1942 that these men were shipped to New Zealand and oecame par t of the t ask- force that was enroute to Guadalcanal . On Ju ly 7 they landed on the beach of Gavuto Island .

Dur ing the p r imary invasion of the Solomon Is lands the a t t ack of Gavuto met with the heaviest re-s is tance. For seventy-two hours the Para -Mar ines were held the re with no relief. However. 1400 J apanese were killed the re in those few hours .

When they were taken f rom Gavuto the F i r s t Battalion joined with the Raiders in the defense of Tulagi . For th i r ty days they were out of touch with the supply de-pots and had to live off the "fat of the l and" : which in the Pacific mean t roots and J a p rice. They par t ic ipated in pa t ro ls and pre-dawn a t t acks at that t ime.

Final ly the Para-Mar ines were sent with the Raiders to t h e quietest spot on the Canal. Then on September 13. 1942. all-hell broke loose and that spot became known as "Bloody Knoll ." In that twenty- four hour bat t le two thous-

Averaging 16S.S m i l t s an hour . Bill Brennand copped the midget race, with Paul Penrose right on his tail most of the way. Bren-natid 's speed, which won for him $S.5oo. was the fastest of four eli-mination heats , two semi-final heats . th« final and the consolat ion heat . Penrose, who told r epo r t e r s that his plywood seat broke f rom "too much gravity on the t u rns . " flew with a handicap dur ing the final few laps of the race. The broken seat lowered Penrose four inches f u r t h e r into the ext remely small cockpit and he was forced to fly blind for the remainder of the race.
