    Design asix-panel CDpackage

    Follow a brief to produce

complete CD artwork fromconcept to final productThe CD package Im going to show you how to create over the following

pages was a real commission I undertook for New Jersey rock band Hollywood

Avenue. The band gave me a lengthy brief that described their vision for their albumartwork down to the very last detail. This was both a good and a bad thing; goodbecause I knew exactly what to create, bad because with the client having such aspecific idea there was little room for manoeuvre.

The bands idea was very imaginative and allowed for a surreal andartistic piece. Typically, I found stock photos of individual pieces or textures and

assembled them together using various image-manipulation techniques inPhotoshop, and I even used hand illustration to fake some parts. Colour overlaysand other subtle effects and textures were also used to help blend things together.

Follow this tutorial to find out how I made Hollywood Avenues insanevision come to life. Ill talk you through my workflow and decision-making processrather than focus too much on specific graphical techniques and Ill also explainhow to use printers templates to make sure your design comes up to their specs.

01 The most efficient way of working is touse the templates provided by your printers thishelps prevent headaches in the future but for

this project I used the templates from ICON (htt p://builtbyicon.com/templates.php). The band wanteda six-panel package, so from the Insert , Folders &Tray Card section I picked 6pnl folder & tray.

02 Download and open your chosen template in your favourite design software. This projectrequired lots of photo manipulation, so I used Photoshop. The template file pictured here is6pnl_folder_OUT.psd and it was really helpful because the doc ument size, colour mode and DPIwere all set to the specifications that my printers needed.

    Get a template

Designing a CD package can be intimidating, as there are a lot of thingsto consider: how many panels? Gatefold or accordion? Jewel case or digipack? But

when it comes to sizing you can rest easy, as your printers should have templates, leaving you to concentrate on the creative side of things.

03 Your client may havelots of ideas about what theywant or they may be totallyclueless. In this particular case, the band provided me with along Word document explainingevery detail and subtle nuanceof their vision.

04 The next step is to sketch out some ideas on paper. With such a detailedbrief I needed to jot down some quick visual references to work from. As thisdesign was all photo-driven, I didnt really need to do a lot of detailed

sketching, so I didnt spend long on this stage.

05 According to the design brief, I needed very specific photos. I didnt havethe resources to shoot the photography myself, so I searched various stockphoto websites and downloaded anything that caught my eye. I frequentlyrevisited these sites for more images throughout the design process.

06 Cut out the photos and prepare them for manipulation in Photoshop.I used the Pen tool in Photoshop to create paths around my objects and thencut and pasted them into my file with the template. Nows a good t ime to saveyour work for the first time.

    Keep costs down

Shooting your own customphotography can be expensive andmost unsigned bands dont have thebudget for that. As a designer, youllneed to use your own resources, suchas stock photo websites, textures, vector packs and illustrations, to

put together a great design thatdoesnt break the bank.

07 Next, arrange some of your photographic elements, positioning themwherever you think works best. This takes a lot of experimenting and eyeballingto see what looks right. I referred back to the design brief and my sketches to

help me decide on what should go where and position it exactly.

08 Use various photo manipulation techniques, including cloning, burning, and dodging, to get the look you want. I used a combination of all of the above, including some freehand digital painting to fake some details, such as the

piano players hair. Continue fleshing out your design until youre happy with it.

09 I added some lighting and colouring effects as well as some dirtytextures to give the piece an old storybook feel and to help tie the different imageelements together. I also created some swirling shapes and played with theblending modes to get the look I wanted.

10 Export your final design as a TIFF and import it into Adobe Illustratorto lay out your text for the credits, which will go on the middle panel. Illustrator isthe best option for doing type layout, because it makes any revisions or editsto the copy much easier.

11 Open your other template PSD (6pnl_folder_IN.psd) and use the sameprinciples as in step 1 to arrange your photographic elements into a layout that youlike. When doing this for H ollywood Avenues CD, I also purchased some otherstock photos including paper, candles, maps and a knife.

12 I used some lighting, colours and textures from the other panels to helpmaintain continuity, such as textures and colour overlays. I created s ome swirlingrays of light and softened the edges and lowered the Opacity to help add tothe mood of the design. Just play around until you get a look that suits.

13 I laid out my text in Photoshop at this stage, because I wanted to givethe type a more textured feel. This way I could beat up some of the letteringwith dirty Photoshop brushes and put other graphics on top of the text, suchas candles and lighting effects.

    Pick PantoneWhen designing the

actual disc itself, keep in mindthat its most common to usespot-colour printing, so eachcolour must be a Pantone colour. You can do some cool things, suchas marking where there should beno ink if you want the CDs metallicsurface to show in your design.

14 Now from your folder of downloaded templates open the tray card fileIcon_tray_out.psd this is the back of the CD. When youre designing CD traycards, some important things to include are the track listings, the copyrightinformation, the barcode and the bands website address.

15 I applied the same techniques as for the rest of the package to designthe tray card. I used the band photo they sent me and typed up the track namesand other information, leaving enough white space for a bar code. Now youneed to design both spines of the package.

16 Pick a template from the Tray\IN folder on which to design the artwork that gets put behind theactual disc itself. I simply used some textures and typed up the mess age the band wanted to give theirfans. I made sure that the look of this matched the rest of the package to be consistent.

18 Next I chose my Pantone colours. This is information that youllneed to supply to your printers they need to know the exact inks and willusually print up to six different tones, but this is something you shouldcheck with them first. Save this as an Illustrator file.

19 Prepare your high-res print-ready files. File types are typically TIFF,JPEG, PDF, or EPS but printers usually have a preference, so make sure youcheck with yours before preparing your final files. Also make sure your imageshave at least a 0.25-inch bleed on all sides.

20 Depending on your printers, you may need to email the files, send themon a disc, or use their upload system on their website. When placing your orderwith the printers, make sure you tell them what your Pantone colours for thedisc label will be and any other special requests.

17 I downloaded the Standard CD template from the choice of CD Faceson the ICON site and opened it up in Illustrator. Most CD faces use spot-colourprinting, so I designed this in Illustrator, which makes it easy to pick andchoose your Pantone colours. You can also use the metallic colour of the CDif you want to just make sure you specify where.
