DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP INTRODUCTION

As teachers in a technology-rich environment, we support students as they use iPads, computers, and other technology in an intelligent, creative and responsible manner.

How students engage in technology at home often shapes their relationships in the overall school community.  Therefore, Friends Seminary’s definition of responsible technology use extends beyond the walls of our school. Our students and families are accountable for how their technology use in and out of school affects the social fabric of the school. In accordance with both federal and developmentally appropriate guidelines, Friends Seminary does not recommend the use of social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram by Lower School students. Parents will be held responsible  if community discord results from their children’s use of social media sites.

Friends Seminary’s Digital Citizenship Guidelines for kindergarten and first grade and the Digital Citizenship Agreement for second through fourth grade take into account what elementary school students can understand, the way they learn, and how the Quaker testimonies shape our mission.

Parents of kindergarten and first grade students should read and discuss the Digital Citizenship Guidelines with their children and also complete the age-appropriate activity included in the booklet.  Parents of second through fourth grade students should read and discuss the Digital Citizenship Agreement with their children before signing and submitting the agreement to the school. Subsequently, families should complete the two age-appropriate activities included in the booklet.

Our activity booklet also provides parents with a rich array of online resources as families use technology together and engage in discussions about how to be a responsible Digital Citizen both at home and at school.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP GUIDELINES

Simplicity• I will enjoy my time using technology but will

also enjoy time working and playing with others.

• I will try to learn something each time I use technology.

Peace• I will be patient when using an iPad or

computer.• I will not take pictures of others unless they

say it is okay.

Integrity• I will let people know where I get

information and pictures.

Community• I will not change settings on my iPad  unless I

have been given permission by my teachers.• If I come across something that makes me

feel uncomfortable, I will tell a parent or teacher right away.

Equality• I will share what I discover or learn about

technology with my friends.

Stewardship• Out of respect for the environment, I will

only print what I need.• I will treat the iPads and computers with care

and respect.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENTAs members of the Friends Seminary Community, we will use technology responsibly by acting in a considerate, safe, and ethical manner.  We understand the use of technology extends beyond the school day and our buildings.

The Quaker Testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship guide me as I become a Digital Citizen.   We will be mindful of how we present ourselves digitally and understand that our words, images and actions have the power to affect others and our own safety.

Simplicity• I will balance my time and energy between digital and non-digital experiences and activities.• As I use technology, I will continue to enjoy the many other activities and people in my life.

Peace• I will treat other people the way I want to be treated, both digitally as well as in person. • I understand harassing and insulting others electronically using inappropriate or harmful content, including words or

pictures is not acceptable. • I will only take photos of others with their permission.• I will only share pictures of others with my teacher’s or my parent’s permission.

Integrity• I will not access anyone else’s account or act as anyone other than myself when using technology.• I will respect other people’s computer files and not edit, move or delete them.• Until I am 13, I must have parent or teacher permission when I provide personal information to set up an Internet

account.• I will cite sources appropriately when I access and use digital information and images.

Equality• If I don’t have what I need to complete an out-of-school technology assignment, I will let my teacher know.

Community• I will protect my privacy and the privacy of others by not sharing personal account information.• I will only change settings on my technology device with the permission of a teacher.• If I come across material that makes me feel uncomfortable or isn’t respectful, I will tell a teacher or parent right

away.• I will use Friends accounts and technology for school related research and activities only.

Stewardship• I will be mindful of the environment when I print.• I will use technology to connect and collaborate with others in a productive, age-appropriate and meaningful way.• I will treat technology and equipment with care and respect.
