Wonder about what’s in a drug that

caused a reaction? Check this FDA

website for more information:

Speaking of that, the FDA has

added a boxed warning to packages

of meloxicam (Metacam®) – this

has to do with use of this medica-

tion in cats: http://www.fda.gov/

AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/

CVMUpdates/ucm231254.htm.

There has also been a recall of cer-

tain lots of heparin made by B.

Braun:

There are two clinical trials under-

way at UC Davis – and you, your

patients, and your clients can par-

ticipate:

“A study evaluating the placement

of stents in dogs with blad-

der/urethral/prostate tumors”

“Evaluation of urate urolithiasis

recurrence in Dalmatians con-

suming Royal Canin Veterinary

Diet® Urinary U/C™ 18”

Participation will entail several

evaluations at UCD, and many

of the costs are covered by the

studies. For information on ei-

ther of these, contact Dr. Jodi

Westropp at jlwe-

[email protected], 530-752-

At the recent Schalm lecture at UC

Davis, the speaker described a sur-

vey developed to assess canine pain

associated with osteoarthritis or ap-

pendicular bone cancer. It has 10

questions and may provide a useful

clinical aid. This can be found at:

Chart/AvailableTools/tabid/1969/D

efault.aspx. Answer a few ques-

tions, and you can download this

questionnaire. While this was vali-

dated in this specific population, it

may be useful for dogs experienc-

ing pain due to other causes…

Here’s some interesting research,

looking at allergies in children and

future development of eczema:

You may have heard about the re-

cent recall of dog food, due to pos-

sible excessive Vitamin D:

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/

pet food recalls can be found on the

AVMA’s website, by year and spe-

cies, at:

Twitter, sign up to follow the FDA

“FDAanimalhealth” – you’ll get

similar news when they are posted.

A fun story about an Italian study is

reported here by the BBC, about

The executive director of PHS/

SPCA writes a blog on SFGate, the

online San Francisco Chronicle.

Here is one that explains how ani-

mal welfare organizations are, and

are not, related to one another:

In case you wonder how rabies

could be a problem in our area, here

is a link to a recent posting in

ProMED, concerning bat rabies.

formative:

On the other hand, bats are great for

the environment, as discussed in

As always, if you are requesting an

exemption from rabies vaccination

for a client’s animal, please follow

these easy steps:

A treating veterinarian’s request on

hospital letterhead, stating

a description of the animal

[including species],

the medical reason for re-

questing a one-year ex-

emption, and

the animal’s microchip

number. The microchip

is not optional.

Titers are nice but not necessary

and if the other required items

are missing, the request will be

returned…

Remember, age is not a disease,

and therefore, not a valid reason to

request an exemption…
