DACVS
Leigh graduated from the University of Georgia Col-lege of Veterinary Medi-cine in 1996. She com-pleted an internship at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine fol-lowed by her return to University of Georgia to complete her surgical resi-dency. Leigh joined the surgical staff of VSA in September 2000 and be-came a Diplomate of the American College of Vet-erinary Surgeons in Febru-ary 2001. Diane Roberts, DVM, DACVIM Dr. Roberts received her
DVM from the University
of Georgia in 1996 and
remained in Georgia an-
other four years to com-
plete a small animal in-
ternship and residency in
small animal internal
medicine. She became
board certified by the
American College of Vet-
erinary Internal Medicine
(ACVIM) in 2000 and
practiced in large referral
centers in Dallas and Kan-
sas City prior to moving to
California. Dr. Roberts
enjoys all aspects of inter-

endoscopic procedures,
critical care, immune-
mediated diseases, and
medical oncology.
The Presentation
Airway disease presents in
varied forms and at vari-
ous life stages in dogs.
Clinical affectation can
range from mild to truly
life threatening. Drs. Rob-
erts and Glerum will be
discussing management
options for laryngeal pa-
ralysis and brachycephalic
airway syndrome, and then
they will travel a bit fur-
ther into the airways to
discuss tracheal collapse
and bronchitis.
Diane is an internist at
VMS and will be fielding
questions on medical man-
agement and diagnostics
for coughing dogs. Leigh,
who is a surgeon at VSA,
will talk about those cases
we can actually fix! Both
work primarily out of the
shared San Mateo facility,
where they frequently col-
laborate regarding patient
diagnostics and treatment.
Please bring your curiosity
and questions regarding
airway disease in dogs to
the upcoming PVMA
meeting.

caused a reaction? Check this FDA

Speaking of that, the FDA has
added a boxed warning to packages
of meloxicam (Metacam®) – this
has to do with use of this medica-
tion in cats: http://www.fda.gov/
AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/
CVMUpdates/ucm231254.htm.
There has also been a recall of cer-
tain lots of heparin made by B.
Braun:

There are two clinical trials under-
way at UC Davis – and you, your
patients, and your clients can par-
ticipate:
“A study evaluating the placement
of stents in dogs with blad-
der/urethral/prostate tumors”
“Evaluation of urate urolithiasis
recurrence in Dalmatians con-
suming Royal Canin Veterinary
Diet® Urinary U/C™ 18”
Participation will entail several
evaluations at UCD, and many
of the costs are covered by the
studies. For information on ei-
ther of these, contact Dr. Jodi
Westropp at jlwe-
[email protected], 530-752-
1393.
At the recent Schalm lecture at UC
Davis, the speaker described a sur-
vey developed to assess canine pain
associated with osteoarthritis or ap-
pendicular bone cancer. It has 10
questions and may provide a useful
clinical aid. This can be found at:

Chart/AvailableTools/tabid/1969/D
efault.aspx. Answer a few ques-
tions, and you can download this
questionnaire. While this was vali-
dated in this specific population, it
may be useful for dogs experienc-
ing pain due to other causes…
Here’s some interesting research,

You may have heard about the re-
cent recall of dog food, due to pos-
sible excessive Vitamin D:

pet food recalls can be found on the
AVMA’s website, by year and spe-
cies, at:

Twitter, sign up to follow the FDA

similar news when they are posted.
A fun story about an Italian study is

In case you wonder how rabies
could be a problem in our area, here

On the other hand, bats are great for

As always, if you are requesting an
exemption from rabies vaccination
for a client’s animal, please follow
these easy steps:
A treating veterinarian’s request on
hospital letterhead, stating
a description of the animal
[including species],
the medical reason for re-
questing a one-year ex-
emption, and
the animal’s microchip
number. The microchip
is not optional.
Titers are nice but not necessary
and if the other required items
are missing, the request will be
returned…
Remember, age is not a disease,
and therefore, not a valid reason to
request an exemption…
