Pastor’s Note:

Would you believe?

It’s yesterday -

We sing the “12 Days” as a Carol today, but it protected the FAITH for so

many years - !

The Carol “the 12 days of Christmas” is a form of basic catechesis through

poetic language, very creative, musical, pleasant. In the middle ages there

were many little Latin phrases which rhymed and because of their sonaric

qualities were easily recalled (true of many cultures which do not depend on

written but rather oral tradition). The Our Father in Greek is quite rhyth-

mical and has rhyme qualities up until “give us this day our daily …” and then the quality changes. Such short,

rhymed and pithy language preserved in written form reflects oral transmission culture.

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone

during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the sur-

face meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code

word for a religious reality which the children could remember.

The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.

The two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments

The three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.

The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.

The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the old Testament.

The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.

The seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit- - Prophesy, Serving, Teaching,

Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.

The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.

The nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit- - Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness,

Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.

The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.

The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles’ Creed.

JR

There are an awful lot of things in our lives for which we plan and there are many things

in life which we don’t think are possible.

One of those things that we “super guess “OUR GOD” is how long we are going to be

around -

I didn’t think I would even make it to 55!!

Next Saturday, December 30th I will celebrate my 75th birthday. I have usually, since

I’ve come to Canada, invited a few people to celebrate with me. Someone I’ve been told

wanted to throw a “Gala” for me on the 30th - my answer was “NO!” -

But I would like to invite anyone who will celebrate the 5:00pm EUCHARIST on Saturday, December 30th to join

me in the Parish Hall for a “glass” (whatever) and an hors-d’oeuvre.

My sister who lives in the outskirts of Boston told me that “75” only comes once in a lifetime - So please join my

sister “Ellie Clark” for once in a lifetime.

Christmas Mailing

The annual Christmas mailing, detailing the Christmas schedule, was sent out this past week by email to those of you who have provided us with an email address, or to everyone else by mail. This letter is not only a special greeting but it also helps us at the office with updating our records and addresses. It should arrive on Monday or Tuesday. If you do not receive a letter from us, you are one of two things: 1) You are not registered at the Corpus Christi Faith Community or 2) You are lost in the computer files. Please call the office to confirm which one of these two your family might be. Every Catholic should be registered at one of the Catholic parishes in the city. That is part of the grand plan. Help us to accom-plish all that we should and must do!

Thank You to Windsor Chapel Funeral Homes Ltd.
