  • WELCOME TO KANSAS CITY

Welcome to National Farmers Union’s 116th Anniversary Convention at The Westin Kansas City at Crown Center!

I am honored this year to welcome an outstanding line-up of speakers and distinguished experts from various fields of agriculture, including USDA’s Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett, American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall, former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander, and Pulitzer Prize-winning editor Art Cullen.

We have an excellent local tour and set of breakout sessions planned, so please take full advantage of our convention programming both during and outside of our general sessions.

Be sure to take in our unique grassroots policy-setting process on Monday and Tuesday, as we shape the vision and priorities of the organization for the coming year.

Also, take in all of the historic sites, vibrant arts, and Midwestern hospitality that Kansas City has to offer. You can find a list of restaurants and attractions in our convention app!

I would like to sincerely thank our sponsors, as this convention would not be possible without their generous support.

  • MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD TO FARMERS UNION AND TO AMERICAN AGRICULTURE

    Janet Nelson

Janet Nelson has been married to Julian Nelson for over 58 years, operating a 360-acre dairy farm in Barron County, Wisconsin, originally started by Julian’s grandparents. They have milked 56 cows in years past, but have cut down to a manageable amount for granddaughters, Brittany and Bailee George to help Julian with.

Wherever Janet goes, she is promoting family farms and the way of life she is so honored to be a part of. She and Julian won’t quit farming because they don’t want another family farm added to the loss count. She strongly believes this country needs family farms and Farmers Union. Janet has been a member of Farmers Union since 1961 and in the 70’s, a Barron County F.U. officer asked her to attend her first fly-in. Ever since, she has played a significant role in Farmers Union and American agriculture.

    Matt Birgen

Matt Birgen has made a notable impact on Farmers Union and the agriculture industry as a whole. He has served on his Clay County Farmers Union board for over 50 years, he has also served on

multiple other boards since coming back from the Korean war and starting his own operation in 1955.

He cares about our environment, the success and collaboration of local communities and agricultural organizations. Education and leadership are also priorities to Matt, teaching our future generations how to stay involved in agriculture and caring about the wellbeing of our farmers and ranchers. He represents our farmers and ranchers because he is one himself. Matt is someone who strives to help others and makes sure they are being equally represented. He has shown tremendous leadership in the agricultural industry on a statewide and national level. He is an advocate, a producer, a hard worker, and above all he stands for all things that embody our agricultural industry.

    Susan Carlson

Sue Carlson is a passionate family farm advocate and has championed Farmers Union policies for most of her life. She provided strong leadership at every level - from serving as a youth leader in her local, to president of Wisconsin Farmers Union, to sitting on the NFU Board of Directors and Executive Committee, and in developing the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO).

Most recently, she played a key role in development of the Women’s Committee of the WFO. Sue worked tirelessly to grow WFO’s efforts to expand participation by women farmers and recognize the vital role that women farmers provide in our world’s agricultural and rural economies. Her work raised the general visibility of WFO, helped build understanding of its mission, and established enduring partnerships between organizations and governments around the essential role of women in agriculture around the world.

    MILT HAKEL AGRICULTURE COMMUNICATIONS AWARD

    Art CullenThe Storm Lake Times

Art Cullen, 59, is co-owner with his older brother John of The Storm Lake Times, a 3,000-circulation twice-weekly newspaper in Storm Lake, Iowa, pop. 10,000, in rural Northwest Iowa. Art is editor

and John is publisher. Art is a Storm Lake native who earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.

In 2017, Cullen received a Pulitzer Prize for editorials “fueled by tenacious reporting, impressive expertise and engaging writing that successfully challenged powerful corporate agricultural interests in Iowa.” His insight informs family farmers on how to develop policy and advocate for themselves effectively.

We will also profile a number of women and men who inspired their fellow farmers and ranchers to agitate for the common good and create community, and explore what modern day agitation looks like?

Introducing the Legal Tools for Succession and Estate Planning with Poppy Davis

This session will introduce the common models for passing a land-based business through a succession and estate plan. Poppy Davis will introduce the important tools of estate planning, and discuss ways assets are transferred during life, upon death, or over time. The second half of the session will focus on legal and accounting structures used to keep the land or facility where you operate legally and financially distinct from the business itself, and the business structures and legal agreements used to transfer a business.
