Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium is a school of about 880 students and 75 staff members. Due to itsmedium size, communication takes place easily and quickly. The school is located in the suburbs ofCologne close to the airport. Special characteristics of the school are all-day schooling and inclusionof students with physical or mental impairments. A lot of students have multicultural backgrounds. Ahigh percentage of students as well as some teachers have multiethnic backgrounds speakingvarious languages. Also, the school has set up one class to teach refugees. Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium is in a network of schools which promote courage against racism. One of the coreaspects of the school’s curriculum is to integrate the students’ ethnic identities into our classes.Especially subjects related to arts are considered to offer the opportunity to bring together studentswith different cultural backgrounds because they give them the chance to not only excelacademically, but also find different forms to express themselves. Cultural activities have alwaysbeen of high importance at Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium and its curricula. Music is of greatimportance at our school. There is a school band and the school offers instrumental and singingclasses. There are regular events at which students perform. Also, there are other extracurricularactivities related to arts such as drama classes and clubs dealing with photography and streetart.Students also successfully take part in competitions in arts. However, often students who excell increative projects struggle with their academic careers. Thus, by getting the opportunity to expressthemselves in arts and by being successful in this area they gain confidence. By working in arts on aninternational level they could share this experience with students from other countries and find newinspiration. Also, by using the English language as a lingua franca they would prepare for life intoday's globalized world. Furthermore, by engaging with their own cultural backgrounds andpresenting them to people from other countries they will experiene the enrichment their culturalbackgrounds give them. The Erasmus+ team at the school consists of four teachers who are allteachers of foreign languages and who are involved in the current Erasmus+ project. If one of themleft the school, the others would take over their responsibilities. All teachers, namely Sena Kayhan,Isabell Keuler, Katrin Mueller and Silke Priebe, have experience with working in arts due to theirsecond language teaching. Also, the headmaster as well the arts and music department highlysupport the project and will share their expertise with the project group. All teachers acquiredorganizational skills when planning and undertaking various school trips and international exchanges.Having experienced international exchanges and projects at Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium thestudents are highly interested in taking part in such exchanges in the future.

Liceo «Girolamo Bagatta» is a State Secondary School which prepares students for further academicstudies. It has a long tradition, dating back to 1792 when the Gymnasium was founded. LiceoBagatta nowadays offers 4 types of courses: Classical Studies, Scientific Studies, ForeignLanguages and Social Studies. It is attended by about 1,000 students aged between 15 and 19. Thestaff consists of over 80 teachers, besides an ICT Technician and Administration staff. Besides themorning classes, Liceo Bagatta runs extra-curricular clubs to promote Foreign Languages, Music,Drama, Sports, Logic Games. Over the years, Liceo Bagatta has organized professional training, cultural events, student exchange programmes and is presently involved in Learning/Trainingcooperation projects with the Local Administration and local Foundations, incl. Archeological andHistorical sites. Students and teachers have participated in competitions and contests and havefostered eTwinning initiatives, which have made of Liceo Bagatta an ‘eTwinning Schools’ Candidate.Between 2011 and 2018, Liceo Bagatta has coordinated or been a partner in 4 LLP ComeniusProgrammes and 3 Erasmus Plus KA2 Partnerships. Liceo Bagatta is deeply motivated to join thisproject since a significant minority of its students are first and second generation migrants, mainlyfrom North Africa, former Yugoslavia, Eastern Europe. In most cases those students have to tackle acultural barrier, underprivileged social and economic conditions and sometimes a contrast betweentheir family traditions and a new environment. With the contribution of three European partners, thisproject would make the entire school community aware of our countries’ multicultural heritage. At thesame time it would make students with a multicultural background protagonists of the school’sinitiatives, thus ensuring for them the same learning and career opportunities as their peers. LiceoBagatta’s participation can rely on the outright support of the school headmaster and management, together with a Team of experienced teachers involved in former Erasmus plus and Comeniusprogrammes, covering the following subjects: English as a Foreign Language, Religion, Music, Art,History, Civics, Math and Physics. The staff consists of about 100, including teaching and non-teaching positions, with minimal turnover. Any key figure can easily be replaced and roles re-distributed within the Team. For this new project, we can rely on the expertise of a music teacher, anexpert teacher in Podcast and moviemaking, Art teachers, Foreign Language teachers, a Webmasterand ICT experts, external experts collaborating to the above mentioned activities on a regular basis. There is also an active team of students trained in Moviemaking, Photography, Podcast, Music andDrama.

At Vilnius Municipality Grigiskes Gymnasium there are 421 students aged 5 to 18 years and 73members of staff. The school was founded in 1927. It is located in the outskirts of Vilnius. The schoolcarries out pre-school, primary, basic and accredited secondary education programmes. Theteaching is based on Polish and Russian. From pre-school group to 12th grade there are 26 sets ofclasses. 191 students attend pre-primary and primary groups. The pre-primary group (pupils aged 5to 6 years) has 35 children. From 5 to 12 grades (pupils aged 10 to 19) there are 230 students. Themission of the Vilnius Municipality of Grigiškes Gymnasium is to provide high-quality pre-schoolprimary, basic and secondary education and take into account the needs and opportunities of eachchild. The training is based on methods and creativity of modern innovators. We want to adapt ourteaching to each student according to their needs and possibilities. The school itself developschildren's spiritual and physical abilities, helps everyone to understand and accept the commonhuman values like sympathy, manners, courtesy, creativity, love for the motherland and beingindependent. Everyone gets to know their cultural and historical roots. This would be the firstparticipation in a Erasmus+ project of Vilnius Municipality Grigiškes Gymnasium. Therefore, themotivation to get involved with this project is high, as our gymnasium consists of national minorities.Students of Russian, Polish, Azerbaijani, Ukrainian, Tatar, Byelorussian, and Lithuanian descentstudy there. Due to the country's economic situation, the majority of the pupils' families have goneabroad to work, so they are looked after by their grandparents. 33% of the students of theGymnasium receive social assistance. These students feel disadvantaged, and when participating inthe project, they will reveal themselves as full-fledged personalities. Participation in this project willbe valuable as it will provide an opportunity to learn about the values and traditions of other Europeancountries. Our gymnasium cares about the traditions of the peoples of Lithuania, Russia and Poland.Student exhibitions are organized, dance groups take part in school and city holidays. Therefore, theschool is equipped with a choreography hall, technology and art cabinets. In charge of this projectwill be Dalia Gauryte who teaches Lithuanian and the deputy director Inga Razulevičiūtė. In casethese persons leave their posts in the future, their roles will be taken over by a history teacher DaivaGriškevičienė and Karolina Veromej an English language teacher. Since our gymnasium is a schoolof national minorities, we have long-term cultural traditions. We will have a great opportunity to shareour experience with our partner countries about fostering and preserving cultures and traditions, aswe maintain a close relationship with the Grigiškės Cultural Center.

IES Jándula is a public high school founded in 1983. We have 670 students and 58 teachers.Students are between 12 and 18. Our school mainly devotes itself to secondary education of whichthere are four compulsory years. It also offers 2 years of A levels, for those students who want toenter university, and 3 training programmes, one of middle-level and the others of higher level, theformer in physical and sporting activities; the latter in the development of cross-platform applicationsand in mechatronic. We offer English-Spanish bilingual education at the three levels and French as asecond language. Also teachers are highly motivated to learn English. IES Jandula is a TrinityExamination Center and also an ICT centre. Our teachers are committed to the use of ICT tools as away to develop students' knowledge and skills. IES Jándula is also committed to create acollaborative educational environment. We participate in different projects with other schools. Dramaand creative writing are important projects for the school not only to develop our students' skills butalso to be in permanent connection with other schools in our city. There is a collaboration with localtheater groups whose members come to school to show drama skills. There is a drama club and theschool participates in drama and creative writing contests. Most students in our school are ofSpanish origin. Yet lately there have been more students from gipsy ethnic backgrounds and fromfirst and second generation migrants, mainly from North and sub-Saharan Africa, and Romania. Those students feel in some cases isolated, demotivated or in conflict with their dual culturalidentities, coping with disadvantaged social and economic conditions. This project would make thewhole school community aware of its multicultural heritage, provide minorities with a central role inthe school’s initiatives and the contact with other European cultures will open students' minds, helping them to accept diversity as a positive value, to build bridges and to go beyond thedifferences. The project team would consist in a group of at least 4 experienced teachers (involved informer Erasmus+ and Comenius programmes), closely collaborating in all activities and tasks, andstudents of 1º BACHILLERATO (aged 16+) with competence in English above Level B1. Ourheadmaster's team will support the team's work. Any key figure can easily be replaced and roles re-distributed within the team as we have a stable staff. All the teachers involved are English users, strong motivators, supporters of team spirit and fair play. Foreign language teachers can reinforcelearning processes. The contact person, has got experience in Comenius, Erasmus projects andEtwinning and she runs a theater project. We have got expertise in ICT tools and history teacherswho always collaborate in international projects.

Please describe the motivation for your project and explain why it should be funded.

Our project aims to focus on students’ self-esteem and cultural understanding in order to enablethem to successfully complete their school careers in diverse and heterogeneous environments.Students with multicultural backgrounds have insights into several cultures and speak variouslanguages. However, often they feel alienated in the country they live in because they do not know itsculture and traditions well.Students whose abilities in main subjects are below average often unlock unknown potential increative tasks. Expressive arts are a great leveller and students from all walks of life can access artsof some kind.As the world population becomes racially and ethnically more diverse, it becomes more urgent toincorporate culturally sensitive approaches in our schools and in our daily teaching practices. All of us, either teachers or pupils, aim to create a stimulating learning environment and provide fairopportunities of success for every member of our classes. Yet, in some cases, ethnic and culturaldifferences lead to isolation and exclusion, while in most cases, different backgrounds, aspirationsand needs are overlooked for the sake of conformity and homogenization. Our aim is to break thatcycle and make diversity a resource rather than a hindrance. In the European Year of Cultural Heritage, we want to look at cultural heritage from variousperspectives. We want to go beyond the surface of stereotyped folklore and explore “the fabric of ourlives and societies”: a system of values, attitudes, expectations which produces life choices and isthe ground of different forms of art.In doing so, the project gives the students the opportunity to closely look at the arts of the culture theylive in. Culture is not seen as a closed box or as a stereotype. By getting an insight into and bypresenting the older traditions of the country they live in, students are given the chance to identifymore with it. Also, the project asks the students to express themselves in cultural products whoseexhibition will foster their cultural understanding of themselves and others as well as their self-esteem.By doing this, the prime aim is to bridge gaps and overcome discrimination, but also to preservecultural identities from the surging conforming wave of global culture.Integration has different facets at local level, but as a whole can only be tackled at European levelwith the contribution of more than one country. We want to act in three ways:1. Raising awareness of the contribution of different cultures to our European 21st century(multi)Cultural Heritage,2. Organizing events and performances of students’ products to foster their feeling of having animpact to share and reinforce that awareness: all events and performances will be recorded in orderto produce at the end a collaborative feature film.3. Encouraging students to become Ambassadors of Multiculturalism, after being trained at eachLearning, Teaching, Training event.

What are the objectives you would like to achieve and concrete results you would like to produce? How are these objectives linked to the priorities you have selected?

The main objective of the project is to strengthen students' self-esteem and intercultural awarenessby undertaking (inter)cultural activities in order to be able to engage and actively participate in ourmulticultural societies. In particular, the following objectives will be included:

Priority 1: Social inclusionObjectives:- Make students, families and teachers aware of our historical and social background,- Highlight turning points in recent European history, as well as relationships between Europe and itsneighbouring countries,- Interpret different attitudes and behaviours in the light of different sets of values,- Use different forms of Art and media to communicate in a creative way,- Provide occasions for people from different cultures to meet and collaborate.

Priority 2: social and educational value of European cultural heritageObjectives:- Compile guidelines as to how use multiculturalism to enrich teaching, learning and school ingeneral,- Experience ways to bring people from various cultures together,- Share and make those experiences replicable in similar contexts,- Highlight the challenges and opportunities of having students with different backgrounds in ourclasses and communities- Train ambassadors of multiculturalism to implement multicultural events at their schools.

Priority 3: supporting schools to tackle early school leavings and disadvantageObjectives:- Display students’ creative work to improve self-esteem,- Monitor the multicultural composition of our organizations and communities,- Publicize success stories and positive role models,- Encourage contact, cultural understanding and support among students from different cultures, both at school and in the local community,- Conduct multicultural events at school also after the time span of the project.

How are the planned activities going to lead to achievement of the project's objectives?

By presenting their own cultural background in arts, architecture, dance, drama and music studentsreflect on their own cultural and historical heritage. By learning about these aspects in otherEuropean countries they find how European countries and their histories are related. In creatingproducts such as common art, fusion music and dance collaborately, the students get to know thehigh value of these arts themselves and of the great opportunities of working transnationally.By producing enriching art the students see how they can contribute successfully which will have apositive influence on their building of academic skills and on their performance at and interest inschool in general. Thus, they experience school not only as a place of academic performance but asplace to express themselves and build positive relationships with others.

How will you support these participants so that they will fully engage in the planned activities?

All schools have a lot of students come from families with low income. Both at Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium and at Liceo Bagatta a lot of students have multicultural non-European backgrounds anda large number of students come from families with low income and with non-acedemic background.IES JANDULA receives a lot of students from small towns and villages from families with low incomeand many others from families with a high unemployment rate, also migrants from Morocco andRumania and many students from gipsy ethnic group with non-academic background. At VilniusMunicipality Grigiskes Gymnasium a lot of unemployed parents emigrate to seek employmentabroad. These students usually face economic obstacles and are often forced to turn down school initiativesor learning opportunities simply because their families are unable to stand the cost. We want to usethe project funds to compensate disadvantages and economic discrimination among students. These students have limited access to any forms of activities to broaden their horizons in theEuropean context. The participation in this project will give our students opportunities to learn moreabout their European counterparts and their respective culture, develop positive attitudes towardscommunicating and working with them. They will learn more about different cultures, develop respectfor the diversity in Europe and increase their intercultural awareness. Thereby will also beencouraged to embrace their own cultural backgrounds and expand them to a European citizenship. The participants of the learning, teaching and training activities will be selected in September 2018and will have regular meetings in which they discuss the ongoings of the project. They will be in touchwith their fellows from the other partner schools via eTwinning in order to minimize anxiety about thetransnational meetings. The topic of Arts has been chosen as it is a field that many of those studentshave an interest in and as it is easy form them to express themselves in this area. Even students thatdo not perform well academically get an opportunity to explore their artistic talents. This might attractstudents who are on the brink of dropping out of school since they can work on their strengths withoutthe normal academic pressure of everyday school life.

How did you choose the project partners? Does your project involve schools that have neverpreviously been involved in a Strategic Partnership? If yes, please explain how the other partners cansupport them during the project.

All project partners found each other on eTwinning. All of the partners have a common link througharts which is of importance at their schools. All schools have previously been involved in a Strategic Partnership except for Vilnius MunicipalityGrigiskes Gymnasium. This has been taken into consideration when planning the Learning, Teachingand Training activities. The activity in Lithuania would be the fourth activity taking place in thisproject. Thus, the Lithuanian partner will be given the chance to learn how to plan, set up andconduct an activity at the meetings taking place previous to their activity. Also, at the very first stafftraining event the other partners will produce a checklist including a timetable for the newcomer. Thisdoes not only ensure that the Lithuanian partner has a guideline as to how to plan their activity butalso to ensure that all partners have equal expectations when it comes to how to conducttransnational Learning, Teaching and Training activities as they have never worked as a projectgroup together.

Have you used or do you plan to use eTwinning, School Education Gateway or the Erasmus+ ProjectResults Platform for preparation, implementation or follow-up of your project? If yes, please describehow.

eTwinning is going to be fundamental in this project.First of all, the four partners have got in contact through the eTwinning Erasmus+ Partnerships 16-19Forum.Moreover, by September 2018 we will have opened an eTwinning project: ‘Juggling among cultures:DRama dancE Arts Music for a Multicultural Europe’, with at least 5 teachers and 20 pupilsregistered from each country. They will use the platform to:- communicate and contact each other in a secure environment,- create public pages about different cultures,- create live events to inform about the project and its implementation,- upload all products and make them available open source to other teachers, the families andstakeholders. On the other hand, the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform will also be purposely uploaded with allproject outcomes and resources, which will remain easily available after the project’s lifetime.

Description of the activity:Describe the content, methodology and expected results of the activity.-How is it going to be related to or integrated with the normal activities of the involved schools?-

Students from different countries present typical art and/or architecture from their home countries. They not only present it to the other students butthey also explain its roots and functions. At the meeting the students explore local historical and archaeological sites in mixed nationality groups. Inworkshops the students compare and contrast similar sites in their countries of origin. The results are presented in a photogallery, Powerpoint orinteractive presentation. The meeting will be supported and integrated by other projects carried out at Liceo Bagatta, i.e. collaboration with the Localadministration and local archaeological and historical sites (Learning/Training Projects - Alternanza Scuola/Lavoro).Together the students create new pieces of common art. The art made at the meeting is going to be photographed to be put on the eTwinningwebsite. The event is filmed so that the film provides footage for the final common movie. The above mentioned activities develop skills and competence in core subjects, like Art, English, History, along with 21st century skills, mainlyCritical Thinking & Problem Solving, Communication & Collaboration, Media and ICT literacy, Social & Cross-Cultural Skills.

How is participation in this activity going to benefit the involved participants?

Students with multicultural background will be protagonists: first-generation migrants can speak about their culture and traditions, second-generationmigrants will explore their parents’ and grandparents’ traditions and be more aware of their dual cultural heritage.Students and teachers will understand and be more conscious of the cultural and social changes introduced by mass migration.

Description of the activity:Describe the content, methodology and expected results of the activity.-How is it going to be related to or integrated with the normal activities of the involved schools?-

In international groups the students evaluate the survey about stereotypes and about the preconceived ideas about the other countries and cultures. Then, the students show the stereotypes people have in minds in short role plays and they practise storytelling. Finally they write a scene together in transnational groups in which they show a good example of intercultural encounter. The activities will beundertaken in collaboration with the local theater and the creative writing project carried out at IES Jándula. All presentations will be filmed to beincluded in the final common movie. These activities develop skills and competences which are included in the school's curriculum, (especially Linguistic communication, Learning toLearn, Social and Civic Competences, Cultural Awareness and Expression) along with 21st century skills, mainly Critical Thinking & ProblemSolving, Communication & Collaboration, Media and ICT literacy, Social & Cross-Cultural Skills.

How is participation in this activity going to benefit the involved participants?

Students with multicultural background will be protagonists: In some of our minorities (gipsy ethnic groups) there is a strong tradition in story-telling.Members of their communities will be invited to tell the participants traditional stories about their cultures.Students and teachers from different cultures would understand, appreciate and value their differences, using them as a source of enrichment andpersonal enjoyment, and considering them as part of peoples' wealth and heritage.Local gipsy communities involved in this project will benefit because they feel a sense of belonging to the local community when presenting theirculture.

Follow UpOnce the project activities are completed, how are you going to assess if the project's objectiveshave been met?

At the first meeting which is the joint staff event each partner will select a member for a “qualitycontrol group”, which will be responsible for monitoring quality throughout the project and, at allmeetings, will summarize the results and suggest possible improvements / amendments wheneverneeded. The internal quality management will be based on a report that each partner will submit twice a year.Delivery and achievement will be checked against the work plan milestones as part of all projectmeetings / workshops. The content quality will be assessed by the end users in a sequence of peer-review assessmentresulting in the final products at the end of the project funded period. The different stages of thedevelopment will be assessed during the meetings and training activities. At the first Transnational Meeting the “quality control group” and the coordinator will write an explicitquality management plan followed by partnership decisions on the indicators for success. Please describe your plans for dissemination and use of project results. How will you make the results of your project known within your partnership, in your localcommunities and in the wider public? Who are the main target groups you would like to shareyour results with?

-

Are there other groups or organisations that will benefit from your project? Please explain how.-

Members from the local community will be invited to visit the presentation of the common piece ofarts produced at each meeting. Also, local newspapers and radio stations will be invited to publishabout the events. This will raise awareness within the local communities of how enriching theirmulticultural backgrounds are.At the meeting in Spain local gipsy communities will be involved in this project. Often they feelalienated from society. By being involved in the project they feel appreciated and part of the localcommunity. At all other meetings institutions other than the schools will be involved in the projectwork which strengthens the schools' connections with the wider communities. The German school isalready part of a national project called "Schule ohne Rassismus - Schule mit Courage" (schoolwithout racism - school with courage), which requires regular activities to underline the students'ongoing motivation to fight racism. The school has a high number of students from migrant familiesand in close vicinity of the school there are three refugee camps and children from refugee familiesare integrated in regular classes. Therefore, by actively encouraging them to participate in the projectwill contribute to mutual understanding and tolerance not only within school but within the widercommunity.

The summary will be publicly available in case your project isawarded. In view of further publication on the Erasmus+ Project Results Platform, please also be aware that acomprehensive public summary of project results will be requested at report stage(s). Final paymentprovisions in the contract will be linked to the availability of such summary. The project "DREAM-Juggling among cultures: DRama dancE Arts Music for a Multicultural Europe"is an Erasmus+ project of four schools from Germany, Italy, Spain and Lithuania. The German schoolwill coordinate the project. The duration of the project is two years and it is set up for students aged15 to 19.The main objective of the project is to strengthen students' self-esteem and intercultural awarenessby undertaking (inter)cultural activities in order to be able to engage and actively participate in ourmulticultural societies. The objectives aimed at in this project are making all of the participants aware of their historical andsocial background and highlighting the similarities and differences of their cultures. By presentingarts from the countries they live in, students with multicultural backgrounds are given the chance toidentify more with the respective culture. The topic of arts is chosen since it is a higher leveller ofmotivation at school so that even students with academic difficulties improve their language andsocial skills. By collaborating and producing different kinds of arts in transnational groups, thestudents will find an opportunity to communicate with the others in order to get self-esteem.There are 102 participants travelling to learning, teaching and training activities (72 students, 30teachers). At transnational meetings staff from the arts departments of the hosting institution will beinvolved to conduct parts of the activity. Also, local institutions such as a Culture Center and a localtheater will be involved in each activity. At a joint staff training event best-practice dealing with how the schools tackle the problem ofmulticulturalism will be exchanged. Also, a guideline for enriching classes through multiculturalismwill be compiled which will be used for the entire project, reviewed at the final meeting and which willbe implemented at all partner schools at the end of the project. At the following short-term exchanges of students, students will present different aspects of arts fromtheir home countries and together in transnational groups create new "fusion" art (art, dance, drama, music). Members from the school communities but also from the local communities will be invited tovisit the presentation of the common piece of arts produced at each meeting. Also, local newspapersand radio stations will be invited to publish about the events. Besides, activities will be filmed for thefinal movie. At the first student activity in Italy students will engage with the question where Europeans come fromhistorically by exploring archaeoligical sights and by comparing them with other European places.Next, the question of who we are in dance will be looked at at the second student meeting inLithuania. Also, a survey on stereotypes about the partner countries will be created which will beevaluated at the next meeting in Spain. The findings as well as examples of successful interculturalencounter will be presented in short role plays and the students practise storytelling when discussingthe question of how others see us. Finally, at the final meeting in Germany students discuss wherewe, as European cititzens are going by engaging with music and by taking part in an interculturalworkshop. Students will be trained to be Ambassadors of Multiculturalism and organize a

multicultural event at their schools after the project-funded time period. The final movie is edited andfinalized. The impact of the project at long term will be the raised awareness for the benefits of multiculturalismat school, in local communities and at European level. During the (multi-)cultural events during thelearning, teaching and training activities, students, teachers, staff and all invited guests willexperience how enriching different cultural backgrounds can be not only when creating pieces of artbut also when learning together at school or when living together in a multicultural society. At longterm, this will be put to practice by using and disseminating the guideline for enriching classesthrough multiculturalism elaborated during the project. Moreover, the student ambassadors areencouraged to organize regular events at their schools at which they continue to raise the awarenessthat different ethnic and cultural backgrounds are not an issue but an enrichment. Furthermore, allstudents who are involved in the project will gain self-esteem - either by creating and presenting theirown culture and pieces of (multi-)cultural art in front of a multicultural public or by being a spectator ofthese events. For example, spectators with multicultural backgrounds can be motivated to be proudof being multicultural by seeing its benefits and taking the presenters as role models. This will fostersocial inclusion and can contribute to prevent early school leaving. The final movie will be publishedon different websites to create a similar impact on spectators from different countries.
