PurposeIs there life after graduation that is a continuation of the life formed in school?
Imagine a place, conceived as an incubator for your generation of creative leaders, post-grad and pre-pro, working, living, and playing to invent a life in a collaborative community of interdisciplinary creators networked in physical and virtual space.
SynthesisThis place is fiction as a reality, as much as reality is a fiction. A full functioning complex, housing space to live, work, and make, all surrounded by a 7 acre park.
Learning from and questioning default archetypes as a method for programmatic and spatial formation.
A physical space to materialize and shape irreality.
Ideas are in the air - Malcolm Gladwell :: New Yorker. May 2008

Housing TomorrowFall 2013 :: ADE 621Paris, FR :: Hartman
PurposeThe future is not what it used to be. Laura Riding and Robert Graves (1937)
The city of Paris is constantly building and rebuilding. In addition to constant outward growth since its origins, Paris has continued to replace or repurpose the land and the structures within its walls as needs change and programs evolve.
SynthesisThe Petite Ceinture, an abandoned railway since the 1930s traverses around the city like and old wall. Passing through neighborhoods leaving series of varied and oddly configured residual spaces within the city.
This involved taking inventory of the range and type of residual spaces, questioning housing as a typology and continuing how these two scenarios work together.
Looking beyond, situations of narrow and residual spaces exist in cities all over, the task ahead would be to propose the notion of dropping these houses into cities across the globe, almost like anti-bombs (a-bombs?), bringing density into the city by utilizing not destroying space.

Menil Drawing Inst.Spring 2013 :: ADE 522Houston, TX :: Brickey
PurposeDevelop a master plan for the Menil Museum Campus and propose/investigate the comprehensive design of a new Drawing Institute and Bookstore/cafe.
SynthesisThe focus for the Masterplan was to allow for sculptural art to act as rock cairns and wayfinding devices across the large campus.
The process was to learn from the Menil. The Treasure Rooms or archive space was the gem lifted above the Menils roof.
The investigation of this Art Museum was to test the spatial relation between archival and exhibition.
Group project in collaboration with Kevin Martinez.

Parking BosqueFall 2012 :: ADE 521Phoenix, AZ :: Hartman
PurposeDesign problems which emphasize theory, aesthetics and tectonics as influences on architectual form.
SynthesisIn nature, bosques are densly wooded areas along riparian communities next to streams and riverbeds.
Mankinds streams and riverbeds of the city are its roadways and transportation corridors.
The goal of this project was to elevate parking required for an entire shopping mall and give the land back to nature and its community, dam up the cities stream and clear way for natures.
Parking lots are normally directly adjacent to the big box they serve, this project is exploring a simple method to stack this condition vertically.

PurposeAs information is rapidly ready at our fingertips and print media/publishers struggle to stay afloat, what does this mean for the future of a library?
SynthesisLibraries area a true public good. In a neighborhood heavily populated at night how can a library as a structure service its constituents after normal hours?
The structure itself is meant to be an extension of ASU Mountain creating a trailhead and appearing to emerge from the ground plain, offering program underneath and above.
With technology at the touch of a glass screen, people are multiple places at once, whether it is with friends online or seeing the world through insta-posts. The interesting question is how can one get the accidental discovery of exploring the stacks digitally?
This is a test at how a library can function during the day, then lift its stacks at night opening the structure for use as assembly space for the public.

Palette BenchConcept Development
PurposeTest the repurposing of a wooden shipping palette or any other palette that has served it use and putting it to a new use and interaction.
SynthesisWhile most shipping palettes can be reused this one serves only one purpose, to ship metal roofing. Now used and rendered as garbage, I proposed that it simply be changed and turned into a multiple of benches. The construction is simple and will take only a small amount of material and tools.
Cut along shipping palette at end of third set of 2x4 supports
Remove both side and bottom braces.
Cut the back of the bottom brace at 12 degrees. Cut the front of the bottom brace the width of the adjacent 2x4. Rotate side wall 180 degrees and cut off remaining 2x4 supports
Build new back supports. Sand wood with 200 grit for comfort.
Wild BrownfieldinstallmentSeeded on 11-27-09 at 2:30am
Purposethe problem facing downtown Tempe area is that it, like many other cities, has been hurt by the current economic crisis especially in the construction and land development industry. All throughout downtown numerous brownfields which are abandoned or underused industrial and commercial sites have beocme scattered across the area. The site is located on the North West corner of Forest and University, across the street from the Chuckbox, it was to be a large multi-use tower development but funding fell through.
SynthesisThe wild brownfield is an approach to greening a brownfield. The process is to solely seed the area with native wildflower seeds before the winter rains and let nature take care of the rest.
Herbicide by the University killed this installment in the misjudgment that it was a lot growing weeds.

PurposeThis project explores the potential of prevalant small outdoor spaces. As urban centers grow denser, personal outdoor space is becoming smaller. Instead of a suburban lawn, urban dwellers have only tiny enclosed patios that are often neglected and underutilized.
Through simple and practical methods of design and construction, using repurposed local materials this project demonstrates how these spaces can become productive, pleasing, and sustainable.
SynthesisThis is intended as a case study in hopes that the methods utilized can be applied on a larger scale. The scope of the project was intended to be at the level that could be completed by the average renter.
Group project in collaboration with William Hallgren.

PurposeThis is the first of many personal explorations for low cost on material producing a high yield on functional and aesthetical purpose for residential modifications.
SynthesisFor me, this is a fun test of making. This is my first attempt towards my affinity to modify, and where else to explore this affinity than the place I reside. I understand that sometimes the dollar saved in material will increase the amount of time to manufacture the intent.
There is a constant struggle between material and labor cost the solution is not one, but it is many, and an ongoing conversation.

Thinking + Reflection
graphical exploration of my thoughts while visiting Paris for 7 days.
Ground Truthing
The city of Paris is a very dense city in terms of tracings. Tracing layers upon layers of information is readily available. The lines of city walls built up then torn down, the lines of fences between farm lands become streets and lands become city. Solid becomes void, void becomes solid, ages of fl ux. Each decade brings in new lines, lines for defense, lines for transportation, lines for separation or conveyance, each with change something else as time goes by. Along these lines either roads, pathways, the river, the canals, railways, or building edges exist a communication of two lines dialogue between its neighboring line. Within the numerous conditions of lines, the city has kept a very similar procedure in dealing with the overlap of lines. Points are made within the city, all of which are told to be important just by the organization of the lines to points. Intentions of creating nodes for gathering, implemented and functioning very successfully. The monuments and parks are visited, used and recreated. Within the use of the cities infrastructures the underlying ground truth discovered was the impact of merchants on the interaction between lines and points. Often latching on to lines in order to have prime location for selling wares. What is not in the tracings are the methods used by merchants to latch onto the lines of the city in order to sell clich products to tourists. Small shops that act as lockers for postcards and mini eiff el towers are latched onto the wall of the divider between the sidewalk and Seine River. Which turns what was once infrastructures for the city into a multiplicity of program. These are more of a formal instance for the use on lines and points to be places of convergence. Informal instances exist. Along subway stops, people will pull up a table and sell small selections of fresh fruit from 3-6 pm to catch the workers on their way home who made need a quick bite, or need a slight restock for their fl at, the prices are cheap also. In addition to impromptu fruit salesman, there are corn on the cob home-made food cart vendors. These vendors would take shopping carts and use them to hold a metal 5 gallon bucket plus metal shelf turned into an ad hoc charcoal grill, cooking corn husks and selling buttered corn on the cob. These where more popular and much quicker at selling their goods than fruit sales men in front of the metro stops. At popular parks (points) throughout the city, teams of sales men walk around the area trying to sell cheese, wine, or bread to parks visitors and spectators. A constant and almost all day aff air. It appears that there is a system in place of people who walk around selling items, and a few oth-ers that restock from grocery stores just off the periphery too far for people in leisure to stroll too. In addition to people taking vending into their own hands, the city has an organizing system in place for locations throughout the city to be turned into public markets or even used locations for residents to sell wares produce or domestic. The way these locations made are like the other vendors booths that latch on to the infrastructure of the city. However these structures are less permanent. These market structures are made of points, lines and surfaces like that of the city. Point grid in the fl oor of numerous plazas allow for vertical lines to be placed in them delineating a square form. Next horizontal lines connect the vertical ones, with a surface draped over them. Simplistic tent structure that allows for multiple uses in numerous locations across the city. When these structures are absent from the plaza the spaces appear to be utilized as a square, but when present the entire plaza becomes an active market. All this space requires is the addition of a few sticks and fabric to liven up what would appear to be nothing in a tracing. This cities procedure of latching onto the lines of infrastructure to create vending could not be seen on the created maps printed out and used to coordinate around the city, only found by being on the ground and interacting with the city itself.
