Conor Maynard’s ‘Cant sat No’ Technical Analysis

Brief of overall video ‘Cant say No’ was Conor Maynard’s debut album, this meant that the producers of the accompanying music video were showcasing him and building the publics initial thoughts of him as a new artist. Due to this they used one of the 6 points in Andrew Goodwin’s theory, to use a lot of close-ups of the vocalist, in this case Conor. Within the video there are a total of 5 scenes each made up of both performance shots and cutaways. They are; •  The bedroom •  The street •  The park •  The party •  The CGI wall

Scene One The Bedroom

The  first  shot  is  a  close  up  of  the  back  of  his  head.  

The  next  is  of  Conor’s  eyes  which  is  an  extreme  close  up.  

The  next  shot  is  a  close  up  again  however  this  >me  it  is  a  side  shot  clearly  showing  the  audience  his  face  which  is  the  first  >me  we  are  able  to  see  him  fully.  

We  then  have  another  extreme  close  but  of  his  mouth  this  >me.  From  this  we  have  now  seen  all  his  features  and  will  be  able  to  recognize  him  throughout  the  rest  of  the  video  as  most  of  the  audience  will  not  have  seen  him  before  as  this  is  his  debut.    

ACer  all  the  con>nuous  shots  of  Conor’s  face  we  then  get  a  close  up  of  his  feet  which  are  walking  clearly  showing  the  viewer  that  we  will  be  moving  onto  the  next  shot.      

Scene Two The Street

In  this  shot  it  is  a  long  blurred  shot  of  corner  however  you  are  able  to  see  clearly  the  wall  and  the  website  which  again  links  back  to  Goodwin’s  theory  of  music  videos  promo>ng  and  show  casing  the  vocalist.  

This  is  yet  another  close  up  shot  of  Conor’s  face  but  at  90  degree  angle.  Despite  there  being  a  lot  of  similar  shots  the  edi>ng  has  a  strong  rela>onship  (Goodwin’s  theory)  meaning  it  is  quick  so  the  viewer  does  not  get  bored.  

The  first  shot  in  this  scene  is  yet  again  Conor  but  a  mid  shot  and  unlike  the  first  scene  there  is  a  stronger  rela>onship  between  the  music  and  the  visuals  as  he  is  dancing,  despite  it  being  simplis>c,  in  >me  with  the  music  (a  point  taken  from  Goodwin’s  theory).    

This  is  very  similar  to  the  shot  before  however  the  camera  has  moved  180  degrees.  

Scene Three The Park

The  next  shot  within  this  scene  is  a  mid  shot  and  shows  clearly  Conor  with  a  large  group  of  friends  all  following  him  which  links  to  Hegemony,  which  is  the  idea  of  a  pop  star  follows  the  dominant  cultural  values,  beliefs  and  expecta>ons,  which  in  this  case  is  that  a  good  looking  teenager  has  a  lot  of  friends  and  due  to  being  male  is  the  ‘leader  of  the  pack’  

A  long  shot  from  behind  showing  Conor  and  his  friends  on  there  way  to  something.  

A  cut  away  but  s>ll  within  the  same  scene.  Due  to  the  ligh>ng  the  shot  has  a  roman>c  feel  en>cing  the  female  viewers  to  con>nue  watching  the  rest  of  the  video.  

This  is  a  simple  introductory  mid  shot  to  the  new  scene  showing  a  group  of  people  that  Conor  soon  becomes  a  part  of.  It  is  shot  using  a  dolly  and  pivots  as  the  girl  walk  around  the  corner.  

Scene Four The Party- Performance Shots

This  mid  shot  caught  from  behind  shows  Conor  dancing  with  an  aQrac>ve  girl  in  a  seduc>ve  manor  this  follows  the  conven>ons  of  Pop  songs  sung  by  males,  as  it  perceives  them  to  be  ‘a  ladies  man’.  

The  first  shot  introduces  the  audience  to  the  next  scene  with  an  over  the  should  shot.  

This  is  yet  another  mid  shot  show  Conor  so  the  viewers  will  easily  be  able  to  dis>nguish  and  recognize  his  face  when  it  comes  to  releasing  his  next  song.  

The  final  shot  within  this  scene  is  a  close  up  of  just  his  face.  

The  next  hot  is  a  long  shot  of  Conor  at  the  party,  showing  him  in  a  social  light,  in  which  many  teens  are  associated  as  being  like  giving  them  something  to  connect  and  relate  with.  

Scene Four The Party- Cutaways

Within  all  of  these  shot  Conor  is  not  in  any  of  them,  this  means  they  are  are  cutaways.  Due  to  the  use  of  these  it  ensures  the  viewer  does  not  get  bored  of  con>nuous  use  of  similar  shots.

Scene Five The CGI wall

Within  this  mid  shot  Conor  is  slightly  obscured  by  those  around  him  due  to  the  framing  however  because  of  this  it  make  the  viewer  feel  more  involved  and  gives  them  a  sense  of  actually  being  within  the  shot.  

This  is  a  very  simple  mid  shot  clearly  showing  the  wall  behind  and  the  CGI  on  it,  giving  the  viewer  something  new  to  look  at  and  thus  keeping  them  entertained.  

This  is  again  a  mid  shot  but  from  the  side  angle  this  >me.
