Configuring the HP N8420, N8460, or the N7000 For Use With ERG Desktop using Version 3.1 of HP’s Smart Document Scan Software

Like many technology vendors, HP sometimes releases new versions of their document handling software. This document is to help you configure your scanner using the latest version of HP’s Smart Document Scan Software version 3.1. Note: This will allow you to use your scanner for ERG Desktop. If you already have the Campus Online profile please select Edit Profile and skip down to step 7. When you grade tests, please be sure to select the “Scan Profile” (Campus Online) for the assessment system you are using. Step 1

� Start HP Smart Document Scan Software � Click “Create New Profile …” to create a new “Scan Profile”

Tip It is a good idea to delete all

the profiles other than the one you create for Campus Online

to avoid confusion when working with the scanner.

Configuring the HP N8420 or N7000 For Use With ERG Desktop & Campus Online


Step 2- Create New Profile

� Enter “Campus Online” for the name of the Profile

� Select the “HP Scanjet N8400 “ � Click “Continue”

Step 3 – Selecting the Layout Tab

� Click the “Layout” tab at the top. � Select “Feeder – simplex (1-sided)” � Leave all other settings the same

o Letter (8.5 X 11) o Portrait o “Scan the whole area of the page” should be checked.



Step 4 – Selecting the Scan Tab

� Select the “Scan” tab at the top of the page � Select “300 ppi” for “Resolution” � Select “Black & White” for “Color Mode”



Step 5 – Selecting the Process Tab

� Un-Click the “Auto-Straighten” box � Click the “Separate pages into multiple documents” box

o Leave “Pages per document” at 1



Step 6 – Selecting the Destination Tab

� Select the “Destination” tab at the top � For “File type”, Select “Tiff (*.tif)” � Then Click “Settings” � Select “TIFF Group4 compressed” (this reduces the scan file size from around

1000k to about 35k) � Click “OK”

o The small “Settings – TIFF Format” box will close”



Step 7 – Choosing the Destination Folder

� Click on the “Browse” button next to the Destination Folder” � Choose:

“C:\ERG Desktop\Scanned_Answersheets” � Then Click “OK” � Then click on “Save” at the bottom of the main screen to save all of the Campus

Change settings in ERG Desktop

� Start ERG Desktop and click “Tools” then “Tuning” � Change the “Horizontal ” to 0.2 inches. � Change the “Vertical” to 0.15 inches � Click “Update” � You are now ready to scan in your answer sheets and then grade them.

How to Scan

� Start the HP Smart Document Scan Software � Choose the “Campus Online” Profile � Load the answer documents into the scanner with the print side facing up. � On the computer screen, click on the “Scan” button. DO NOT press any of the

buttons on the scanner to begin scanning.
