Welcome from the President, Dr Frank Condon

On behalf of the EVA Executive, I would like to welcome you to the 36th Annual Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures at the RACV Royal Pines on the Gold Coast, Sunday 13 - Thursday 17 July, 2014. The EVA Executive and its Education Sub-Committee are the driving force behind the Bain Fallon, along with a generous group of former Executive members and experienced veterinarians, who put in many volunteer hours every year to make the Bain Fallon the incredible experience that it is! The Bain Fallon is unlike many other veterinary conferences around the world. It has a high quality scientific content, and increasing streaming options with the “How To” and “In-Depth” Sessions, and Twilight Tutorials. In addition, this year EVA and the Equine chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) are sharing some sessions, so that there will be plenty of cutting-edge research and clinical papers to look forward to. Our location this year on the Gold Coast sees us in Queensland’s peak tourism and getaway setting. The Gold Coast is a cosmopolitan city that can rightly boast of its superb beaches, great accommodation options, restaurants, shopping opportunities, attractions, and great travel connections. Close to major attractions such as Dream World, Sea World, Water World and the beaches, it offers a warm break away from the colder Southern climates. The Bain Fallon is famous for delivering cutting-edge professional development, practical workshops, and tutorial sessions, and this year looks to be no exception. EVA is delighted to welcome our brilliant key note speakers Professor Andy Durham (Internal Medicine) from the UK, Professor Jim Schumacher (Surgery) from the USA, and Professor James Gilkerson (Infectious Diseases) from Australia. The ever-popular Twilight Tutorials, and the EVA Wellness Stream give attendees access to some punchy and practical sessions on Equine Cushings Disease, reproduction, musculoskeletal injury, dentistry and some practice management / lifestyle topics. Our local speakers form the backbone of the presenters in these tutorials. The Tuesday “How To” and “In-Depth” Sessions are shaping up to be both practical and topical, giving attendees an opportunity to become involved in discussions about serious topics in an open and inclusive environment.

The workshops at Bain Fallon are always a highlight; a theme continuing into the 2014 curriculum with a Radiology Workshop on Friday 18 July, 2014. With over 40 exhibitors, the industry exhibition is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere dedicated to the needs of the equine veterinary practitioner, providing an excellent opportunity to view the full range of equipment and supplies available and to ensure you purchase at the best prices. Very special thanks must go to our ongoing Platinum sponsor Provet, as well as Gold sponsor Troy, Silver sponsor Jurox and a new addition this year, Bronze sponsor Vepalabs. The social activities that form an integral part of each Bain Fallon Memorial Lecture week have not been forgotten. This year’s social program offers Welcome Drinks on the Sunday night, Happy Hours on the Monday and Tuesday, the Industry Evening on the Monday, the Casual Dinner on the Tuesday, the Young Member Dinner, and Thursday’s Gala Dinner, as well as an afternoon of golf on the Wednesday. The Bain Fallon is renowned for its social ethos and culture – it has managed to create, renew, enhance, and solidify friendships amongst veterinarians from all over Australia and the world. I am looking forward to making you welcome at this year’s Bain Fallon, where you are guaranteed a full week of excellent continuing education, collegiality and fellowship.

Keynote speakers

One of the major drawcards of the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures each year is the calibre of local and international speakers that the event attracts.

This year’s Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures keynote speakers are:

Andy graduated from Bristol University in 1988, moving into ambulatory equine practice in 1991. He gained the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons’ certificate in equine practice (CertEP) in

1993 before moving to Liphook Equine Hospital in 1994. He then became a partner at Liphook in 2001 followed by the RCVS Diploma in Equine Internal Medicine in 2003 and European Diploma in Equine Internal Medicine in 2004. He continues to do some first opinion ambulatory work although is now working primarily in the new hospital at Liphook with medical in-patients and the diagnostic laboratory. Andy’s main interests are in endocrine disease, GI and liver disease, infectious diseases, dermatology, and other aspects of internal

medicine. Andy is also a visiting professor at the new University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine.

Professor Jim Schumacher (USA) - SurgeryProfessor, College of Veterinary Medicine (Dept Large Animal Clinical Sciences), The University of Tennessee

private practice was spent working in feed yards in Western Kansas. He completed a master’s degree and a residency in large animal surgery at Texas A&M University in 1980. He was a member of the faculty at Texas A&M University until 1997. Following this he has worked at the University of London, Auburn University, the University College Dublin, and the University of Tennessee, where he has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science since 2003. Professor Gilkerson is particularly interested in equine infectious diseases, but is also involved in research into poultry infectious diseases and is developing an interest in infectious diseases of Australian and African wildlife – much to his surprise! Professor Gilkerson is a Past President of EVA, and the Victorian Division of the AVA. He was awarded the Australian Veterinary Association President’s Prize in 2008 and in 2009 was made a Fellow of the Australian Veterinary Association.
