OverviewThe National Instruments [c]FP-AI-1xx devices are versatile analog

input modules for Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint that can be

used to measure voltages ranging from the millivolt level to the

    120 V high-voltage level in applications such as battery-pack

monitoring, fuel-cell testing, and general measurement from

transducers. These modules can also measure 0 to 20 or 4 to 20 mA

current loops from industrial sensors and transmitters. All the

modules include overranging and onboard diagnostics to ensure

trouble-free installation and maintenance. The modules measure and

linearize signals on-board to return scaled values to your control

or monitoring software. The [c]FP-AI-1xx modules come with

NIST-traceable calibration certificates, ensuring accurate and reliable

    analog measurements.

Smart I/O ModulesWith [c]FP-AI-1xx analog input modules, you can directly connect toyour industrial sensors or units under test and get high-accuracy

measurements. The I/O modules filter, calibrate, and scale raw sensor

signals to engineering units, as well as performing self-diagnostics to

look for problems with the module or the wiring. With FieldPoint

modules, your software application reads a linearized, calibrated, and

scaled value from the I/O module, eliminating the error-prone step of

converting binary values to voltage or current values. For increased

accuracy and noise rejection, the [c]FP-AI-110 and [c]FP-AI-111 use a

16-bit delta-sigma ADC with an integrated lowpass filter on each

channel, which you can configure for 50 Hz, 60 Hz, or no rejection.

With high-accuracy 12-bit ADCs or 16-bit delta-sigma ADCs on the

I/O modules, you also get instrument-quality measurements on an

    industrially rugged, distributed, embedded system.

[c]FP-AI-1xx modules offer a variety of update rates to fit your

application, ranging from 0.66 to 360 Hz. These rates vary based on

the module used and on the noise filter settings selected on the

module. Overall data throughput depends on software loop speeds

and network speeds. With overranging and underranging, the

[c]FP-AI-1xx analog input modules can measure inputs or sensorsthat are not calibrated to standard ranges. For example, when

configured for an input range of 4 to 20 mA, the modules actually

measure inputs from 3.5 to 21 mA.

Thermocouple and RTD Modules for Compact FieldPoint

    Overview

The National Instruments cFP-TC-12x and cFP-RTD-12x are versatile

temperature input modules for Compact FieldPoint, used to measure

    thermocouples, millivolt-level voltages, thermistors, and 2, 3, and 4-wire

RTDs. They are used in applications such as temperature chamber control,

device testing, and process control. Thermocouples are low-cost, flexible

temperature devices. RTD sensors are used in applications for acquiring

temperatures with high accuracy. Two and 3-wire RTDs work well for

applications with short signal wires and low noise levels; 4-wire RTDs are

well-suited for applications with long signal wires or high noise levels.

All of these I/O modules include overranging and onboard diagnostics to

ensure trouble-free installation and maintenance. The modules measure

and linearize signals on board to return scaled values to your control or

monitoring software. NI cFP-TC-12x and cFP-RTD-12x modules have NIST-

traceable calibration certificates (available on request), ensuring accurate

    and reliable analog measurements.

Smart I/O ModulesThe cFP-TC-12x and cFP-RTD-12x modules offer 16-bit resolution for

high-accuracy measurements, and you can connect directly to industrial

sensors or units under test with the safety isolation available. The modulesfilter, calibrate, and scale raw sensor signals to engineering units, as

well as perform self-diagnostics to look for problems such as open

thermocouples. With cFP-TC-12x and cFP-RTD-12x modules, your software

application reads a linearized, calibrated, scaled value from the I/O module,

eliminating the error-prone step of converting binary values to temperature.

For increased accuracy and noise rejection, the modules use a

16-bit delta-sigma ADC with an integrated lowpass filter on each

channel, which is configured for 50 and 60 Hz rejection. With high-accuracy

16-bit delta-sigma ADCs on the I/O modules, you also get instrument-quality

measurements on an industrially rugged, distributed, embedded system.

cFP-TC-12x and cFP-RTD-12x modules offer a variety of different updaterates to fit your application, ranging from 0.22 s with filters off and 1.08

to 1.13 s with f ilters enabled. Overall data throughput depends on filter

settings across all channels, software loop speeds, and network speeds.

cFP-TC-120The cFP-TC-120 includes eight differential inputs for thermocouples.

It also provides cold-junction compensation using a thermistor embedded

in the connector block. An onboard microcontroller compensates and

linearizes the thermocouple reading to the NIST IST-90 standard,

using an advanced linearization routine for maximum accuracy.

cFP-TC-125In addition to the thermistor and linearization features of the cFP-TC-120,

the cFP-TC-125 provides 250 Vrms of common-mode rejection, ideal for

applications where differences in voltages might exist between connected

thermocouples. The cFP-TC-125 also provides 0.22 s update rates when

the 50/60 Hz filter is not enabled.

cFP-RTD-122The cFP-RTD-122 includes eight inputs for 2 and 3-wire RTDs.

The module uses a stable current source for sensor excitation and an

onboard microcontroller that linearizes and scales the measurements to

temperature units. You can configure each channel of the module to

return data scaled to temperature (C, F, or K) or resistance. The 3-wire

configuration used with the cFP-RTD-122 eliminates errors caused by

lead wire resistance but does not reduce errors caused by noise. If your

application involves high noise or long wires, you should use 4-wire RTDs

    with the cFP-RTD-124.

cFP-RTD-124The cFP-RTD-124 includes eight inputs for 2 and 4-wire RTDs. The module

uses a stable current source for sensor excitation and an onboard

microcontroller that linearizes and scales the measurements to temperature

units. You can configure each channel of the modules to return data scaled

to temperature (C, F, or K) or resistance. Four-wire RTDs used with the

cFP-RTD-124 are ideal for applications involving long signal wires or high

signal noise. The 4-wire configuration eliminates the voltage drop caused

by lead wire resistance and reduces errors caused by noise.

Isothermal Connectivity for the cFP-TC-12xFor maximum accuracy, NI recommends using an isothermal connector

block with the cFP-TC-12x. The cFP-CB-3 isothermal connector block

minimizes the temperature gradient across wiring connections,

improving the accuracy of the cold-junction measurement, and,

    therefore, of thermocouple measurements.

    Compact FieldPoint I/O Connections

Compact FieldPoint modules include a built-in power distribution bus

that provides multiple power connections on the module. A field-wired

power supply connected to the voltage (V) and common (C) terminals is

internally connected to a power distribution bus that provides additional

breakout terminals for voltage supply (VSUP) and common (COM). These

terminals offer a convenient way to distribute power to field devices that

    require external power.

Each cFP-TC-12x input channel has two terminals for differential input:

    1. Thermocouple positive input (IN+)2. Thermocouple negative input (IN-)

Each cFP-RTD-122 input channel has three terminals:

    1. Excitation output (EXCITE)

    2. Sensing input (SENSE)

    3. Common input (COM)

Each cFP-RTD-124 input channel has four terminals:

    1. Excitation output (EXCITE)

    2. Positive sensing input (SENSE+)

    3. Negative sensing input (SENSE-)

OverviewThe National Instruments [c]FP-SG-140 is a versatile resistance bridge

input module for Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint that can be used to

measure values from resistor bridges including full and half-bridge strain

gauges, quarter-bridge strain gauges (using an external completion

register), and load and torque sensors. The [c]FP-SG-140 includes built-

in excitation, overranging, and onboard diagnostics to ensure trouble-free

installation and maintenance. The module measures and linearizes signals

onboard to return scaled values to your control or monitoring software.

The [c]FP-SG-140 comes with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate,

ensuring accurate and reliable analog measurements.

Smart I/O ModulesWith the SG-140, you can connect directly to industrial sensors or

units under test and get high-accuracy measurements. The module

filters, calibrates, and scales raw sensor signals to engineering units, as

well as performing self-diagnostics to look for problems with the

module or with the wiring. With the SG-140 module, your software

application reads a linearized, calibrated, and scaled value from the I/O

module, eliminating the error-prone step of converting binary values.Because the [c]FP-SG-140 measures in units of millivolts per volt, it

can interface with a wide variety of transducers, such as load cells and

pressure sensors. The module uses a pulsed excitation of up to

21 mA per channel that turns on and off the excitation to each channel.

This reduces self-heating effects and provides more accurate and

repeatable strain measurements. The [c]FP-SG-140 also provides true

ratiometric readings to eliminate errors caused by variations in

excitation voltage. Each channel on the module can be configured for a

different excitation level of 2.5, 5, or 10 V. For increased accuracy and

noise rejection, the [c]FP-SG-140 uses a 16-bit delta-sigma ADC with

an integrated lowpass filter on each channel, which you can configure

    for 15, 60, or 240 Hz. With a high-accuracy 16-bit delta-sigma ADC,

you also get instrument-quality measurements on an industrially

    rugged, distributed, embedded system.

The [c]FP-SG-140 has three update rates to fit your application,

ranging from 0.87 to 1.11 Hz. These rates vary based on the noise filter

setting selected on the module. Overall data throughput depends on

software loop speeds and network speeds. With overranging and

underranging, the modules can zero out unstrained readings in software

to compensate for field devices with span errors of up to 12 percent.

IsolationThe [c]FP-SG-140 features optical bank isolation with 2,300 Vrms of

breakdown isolation. These Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint

modules do not have channel-to-channel isolation.

    Field I/O Connections

module. A field-wired power supply connected to the voltage (V) and

common (C) terminals is internally connected to a power distribution

bus that provides additional breakout terminals for voltage supply

(VSUP) and common (COM). These terminals provide a convenient

OverviewThe National Instruments [c]FP-AO-2xx devices are versatile analog

output modules for Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint that can be

used to control valves, gauges, and other industrial actuators. All

modules include overranging and onboard diagnostics to ensure

trouble-free installation and maintenance. The modules accept

engineering units from you, control or monitoring software and

linearize and output scaled signals. The NI [c]FP-AZ-2xx modules

come with NIST-traceable calibration certificates, ensuring accurate

    and reliable analog control.

Smart I/O ModulesWith AO-2xx modules, you can directly connect to your industrial

actuators or units under test and get high-accuracy control. The I/O

modules calibrate, and scale engineering units to sensor signals, as

well as performing self-diagnostics to look for problems with the

module or with the wiring such as open current loops. With AO-2xx

modules, your software application writes an engineering value to

the I/O module, eliminating the error-prone step of converting

voltage or current to binary values. The A0-2xx modules have anupdate rate of 200 Hz. Overall data throughput to the controller or

PC depends on the software loop speeds and the network speeds.

The [c]FP-AO-200 includes eight 0 to 20 mA or 4 to 20 mA analog

output channels, generated with a 12-bit DAC. Each output channel

includes a monitoring circuit and LED indicator for open current

loop detection. The AO-200 requires an external power supply

that provides 5 to 24 VDC.

The [c]FP-AO-210 includes eight 0 to 10 V output channels,

generated with a 12-bit DAC. Each channel provides a voltage source

capable of supplying up to 1 mA. You can obtain up to 10 mA by

powering the AO-210 with an optional external power supply of

    15 to 30 VDC.

IsolationThe AO-xx series modules feature optical bank isolation with2,300 Vrms of breakdown isolation. These Compact FieldPoint and

FieldPoint modules do not have channel-to-channel isolation.

Digital Input Modules for Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint

    Overview

The National Instruments [c]FP-DI-3xx devices are versatile digital input

modules. The DI-300, DI-301, and DI-330 are available in the Compact

FieldPoint and FieldPoint product families. The new NI cFP-DI-304 module

is available for Compact FieldPoint systems. You can use these modulesto monitor digital signals ranging from low voltage levels up to 250 V.

They are commonly used to monitor proximity and limit switches,

pushbutton switches, thermostat outputs, relay closures, power circuits,

and TTL devices. All the modules include onboard diagnostics to ensure

    trouble-free installation and maintenance.

    Digital Input Modules

The [c]FP-DI-3xx modules provide built-in module-to-module isolation to

protect your FieldPoint system and controller or communication interface

from high voltage levels. The DI-300, DI-301, and DI-304 modules use a

common ground plane for all the input channels. Each channel on the DI-300,DI-301, and DI-304 modules include current-limiting circuitry to prevent

module damage when connected directly to a 24 VDC source. The DI-330

uses eight optically isolated input channels so that each digital input has

a separate ground plane, and you can use each channel with a different

voltage potential. Thus, you can connect one channel to a 5 VDC TTL signal

and another signal on the same DI-330 module to a 250 VAC line voltage.

Each channel on the DI-330 includes current-limiting circuitry that limits the

total current to 1.5 mA to prevent damaging the module. All channels on

the DI-3xx modules feature LEDs that indicate the input state of each

channel. The modules feature an all channel update rate of 1 kHz. Overall

data throughput depends on software loop speeds and network speeds.

    Isolation

The [c]FP-DI-3xx modules feature bank isolation with 2,300 Vrms of

breakdown isolation. In addition, the DI-330 provides double insulation

for up to 250 Vrms of operational isolation. You can safely use Compact

FieldPoint in applications where hazardous voltages are present when

used with the cFP-CB-1 connector block. You can safely use FieldPoint in

applications where hazardous voltages are present with the FP-TB-x

terminal base. These Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint modules do not

    have channel-to-channel isolation.

    Field I/O Connections

Compact FieldPoint and FieldPoint modules include a built-in powerdistribution bus that provides multiple power connections on the module.

A field wired power supply connected to the voltage (V) and common (C)

terminals is internally connected to a power distribution bus that delivers

additional breakout terminals for voltage supply (VSUP) and common

(COM). These terminals offer a convenient way to distribute power

to field devices that require external power.

    Overview and Distributed Applications

National Instruments cFP-180x interfaces connect four or eight

Compact FieldPoint I/O modules to a high-speed Ethernet network or to

an RS232 serial port. With up to 100 Mb/s data communication rates and

    event-driven communications, an NI cFP-180x delivers a high-performance

network connection for Compact FieldPoint that is easy to interface with

a PC or PAC-like Compact FieldPoint embedded controller. One or more

cFP-180x interfaces, connected by standard networking equipment, provide

expanded I/O that you can control with a single Compact FieldPoint

controller, see Figure 1. You can also build a PC-based distributed I/O and

control system by connecting two or more cFP-180x devices to your PC.

    Hardware Architecture

A cFP-180x provides an integrated network interface (Ethernet or serial)

and a 4 or 8-slot backplane, and it works with the same modules and

connector blocks used in other Compact FieldPoint systems.

    Building Ethernet-BasedDistributed I/O Systems

A cFP-180x can communicate with Compact FieldPoint real-time

embedded controllers; any Ethernet-based programmable automation

controller (PAC); and a Windows computer running LabVIEW,

LabWindows/CVI, Measurement Studio, Lookout, or your choice of OPC

client application software. Using a cFP-180x, you can rapidly build

flexible, modular distributed measurement and automation systems.

    IndustrialControlandD

    istributedI/O

Flexible I/O ConnectivityThe Compact FieldPoint backplane provides standard 37-pin D-Sub connectors f

the signals from the I/O modules. This provides you the flexibil ity to choose t

connectivity method that works best for your application. You have three options

connect field wiring to the 37-pin D-Sub connectors:

    1. Using an integrated connector block like the cFP-CB-1, cFP-CB-3, or cFP-CB-11

    2. Using a cable to an external connector block mounted on a DIN rail

    3. Making your own custom cable.

Integrated Connector BlocksThe most secure and compact connectivity option is to use the integrate

connector blocks. We offer three connector blocks the cFP-CB-1, the cFP-CB-

    and the cFP-CB-11.

    cFP-CB-1(See Figure 1)The cFP-CB-1 is a general-purpose connector block suitable for any I/O modu

With 36 terminals, the connector block simpl ifies wir ing by eliminating the need

connect more than one wire to a terminal. The cFP-CB-1 also features both a built-

strain relief bar and a separate wire tie connector, making it easy to create secu

wir ing setups for high shock and vibration applications. Although both th

    cFP-CB-1 and the cFP-CB-3 feature a built-in thermistor for cold-junctio

compensation, we recommend using the cFP-CB-3 when measuring thermocouple

cFP-CB-3(See Figure 2)The cFP-CB-3 connector block is designed for use with the cFP-TC-120 module.T

cFP-CB-3 uses isothermal construction to minimize thermal gradients on the I/

terminals. This increases the accuracy of the thermistor that is used for cold-junctio

compensation. The cFP-CB-3 also features both a buil t-in strain relief bar and

separate wire tie connector, making it easy to create secure wir ing setups for hi

    shock and vibration applications.

    cFP-CB-11(See Figure 3)The cFP-CB-11 is a low-profile, general-purpose connector block suitable for any I/

module except the thermocouple module. These connector blocks feature a side ex

for the wir ing, making them a good fit for applications with limited front clearanc

Because the connector blocks are smaller, the cFP-CB-11 is best suited f

applications that use small-gauge wire or that use only a few channels.
