‘…to serve the King truly and faithfully as Clerk, Keeper, and Registrar of His Majesty’s Papers and Records for matters of State established at Whitehall, to preserve said papers said Papers and Records from harm and damage, not to suffer any to be purloined, embezzled or defaced; to keep secret such things therein contained as shall be fit for his Majesty’s service to be concealed, and to do his best to recover such papers as may have been detained or embezzled by private persons’
