The tradition of decorating at Christmas dates back to the 16th Century when the first Christmas Tree was placed in front of a Cathedral in Germany. In Clunes, decorating our main street is a more recent phenomenon that has been possible because of many people and businesses each year. So here are some fun decoration facts.

Did you know that every business in town has contributed in some way to the Christmas decorations or Christmas in Clunes events since the festivities started in 2016? Did you know that there are more than 32 sets of lights – and that number is growing - used to decorate our main street? Getting in the Spirit…

Christmas is a playful time when adults can become children, children can be children and even if you are not near your family, you can come together with the extended family around you. It’s this spirit (with our own unique Clunes twist) that is the driver behind every aspect of Christmas in Clunes, from how we prepare and run the festivities, to the festivities themselves.

Take a sneak peek at the program for every Friday before Christmas in December and you’ll see what we mean.

We’ll launch festivities with the (now) annual Street Parade and a Christmas carnivale full of christmas colour, circus acts and even a special show by nationally recognised duo, Jugg Life, two of Australia’s best jugglers (capable of keeping a ludicrous number of props in the air at any one time). Clunes Former Free Library Renovation By Phil Taig

Time takes its toll on all buildings, particularly when they are empty and neglected. This is natural and expected. It comes as no surprise then that Clunes former Free Library, built in 1882, has suffered during its 137 years of existence from the ravages of weather. However in recent years the Committee of Management (COM) has raised funds, many thousands of dollars, for remedial work to be carried out, and currently the Free Library is as weather proof as it has ever been.

Internally the Hall, front office and kitchen has been cleaned and freshly painted by volunteers and Friends of the Free Library and has provided a fine venue for Authors talks during this town’s 2019 Clunes Booktown weekend.

What has been unexpected and disappointing is the damage which occurred from vandal attacks. The photo of the rear of the building shows windows that have been smashed and covered by sheets of galvanised iron, and some graffitti on the external brick wall. A security door has also been installed on the Hall exit door to prevent a recurrence of attempts to kick the door down.

The COM has made an application for fresh funds to a) cover the refurbishing cost of the two rooms behind those shuttered windows b) provide a new and modern kitchen that will enable catering to be provided for social activity.

Applications for funds are always competitive between many groups, but if unsuccessful, the COM must always keep applying.

Vacancy

The COM is looking for new members to expand its outlook and increase its number. An invitation to the next COM meeting is extended to anyone interested in returning our iconic former Free Library building to a vibrant community asset. This will be on Thursday 24th October at the Free Library starting at 7:30 pm.

The Chairman of the Committee is Graeme Johnstone and he may be contacted on 0427 534 532 or via e-mail at ‘[email protected]

CLUNES MUSEUM: A HOME FOR YOUR HISTORY By James Curzon

DISCOVERY HITS 50!

In July, the Museum celebrated the publication of issue No 50 of DISCOVERY, our quarterly newsletter. Congratulations to the editors, Robert and Norah Campbell. Each edition contains material unavailable elsewhere on the history of the district and its identities. There is an index to the first 50 issues. So if you want to know more about Clunes identities like Melbourne Cup jockey, Bobby Lewis, pioneering car manufacturer, Harley Tarrant, the hero of Eureka, Peter Lalor or colourful businessman, Les Davis, it’s all there. Copies are available for $4 each from the Museum or the news agency or with a Museum membership. To preserve this valuable record for locals and researchers, the Museum will have 2 full sets professionally bound.

100 YEARS AGO IN CLUNES

Every month, local historian Robert Campbell selects 5-6 articles published exactly one hundred years ago in the Clunes Guardian and Gazette, using the Research Department’s microfilm records, and puts them on display in the Museum’s Fraser Street shop front. They are worth checking out every month.

A report from September 1917, as WW1 raged, on a “Beckworth Social” held at the Glendaruel School gives a good idea of what a fascinating and intriguing window they are into a vanished past. After playing euchre and dancing, the good people were served refreshments at midnight. “Dancing was resumed, ‘to chase the glowing hours with flying feet’, to lively music contributed by district musicians with great éclat till the early hours when all joined in singing the National Anthem and ‘God Save Our Splendid Soldiers’ “. Imagine district musicians, dancing into the early hours and journalists quoting poetry and all in the Beckworth/Glendaruel district. Maybe the good old days really were better. Thanks Robert. Well worth reading every month.

PS. The current window display on the Clunes Agricultural Show is also worth checking out.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS

As a volunteer run organization, we are looking for people to help operate the Museum. If you’re interested in finding out what’s involved and what’s on offer, you could come in Thursday morning which our workshop day and meet the team. Or better still, contact Sue Gubby, Vice President (ph. 0417562258) or James Curzon, President (ph. 0412853410) for a familiarization tour to see if we might be what you’re looking for as a volunteer. We provide training and also pay for training provided through Museum Victoria’s professional development program.

EVENT & FESTIVAL FUNDING TO BOOST TOURISM

Council has been given one-off funding of $100,000 from the Victorian Regional Events Funding (REF) for the delivery of events and festivals which drive visitation from outside the Shire.

Mayor, Cr Don Henderson, said that he was pleased that Visit Victoria funding has been made available to the Hepburn Shire.

“Hepburn Shire is already known for some of the biggest and best events in the State, but we’re keen to support more events, that build on the strengths of our region, with this funding,” said Cr Don Henderson.

The successful recipients must deliver their event between January 2020 and December 2020.

“More visitors to our region means better social and economic outcomes for our communities,” said Cr Don Henderson.

Guidelines are available at www.hepburn.vic.gov.au (News section).

Applications will open on 9 October and close on 8 November 2019.

Interested event organisers can discuss their potential application with a member of the Events or Economic Development team, or outline their proposal to [email protected].

UPGRADING CLUNES PRIMARY SCHOOL BRICK BY BRICK By Craig Wilson, Media Contact, Jaala Pulford MP

Students in Clunes will soon have access to the first-rate facilities they deserve, with work underway upgrading Clunes Primary School.

Member for Western Victoria, Jaala Pulford, today announced $149,000 has been earmarked to build two new spaces at Clunes Primary School.

City Living Property Services has been appointed to deliver the upgrade, which will include a new play space and learning space.

Ms Pulford said the upgrade of Clunes Primary School will provide great new facilities for local kids.

“These local upgrades are part of the school building boom that is happening right across Victoria,” Ms Pulford said.

“Upgrading Clunes Primary School will give local students access to great facilities, because you can’t deliver a first-rate education in second-rate classrooms and facilities,” she said.

Under the Andrews Government’s school building boom, a total of 100 new schools will open by 2026, ensuring every child has a great local school and a great start in life.

The Government has invested $5.6 billion to deliver more than 1,400 school upgrades, supporting over 5,000 construction jobs for Victorians.

Clunes Golf Club By Ray Skinner

How the year is rushing by. Winter grass is dying off and the Course is already running much faster. Annual Meeting coming up as noted above. And then "Bang" Christmas in full swing. ( No pun intended ).

Cooler weather seems to have hung around throughout September keeping numbers down on Competition days, but hopefully it will soon be shorts and sunscreen.

It is fair to say that our Course has been in the best condition this Winter that it has for many years. Noticeable improvements around Scrapes, Tee-beds and the Course in general have been undertaken by a small group of dedicated Members.

Thanks to all. These will take time to settle down, but will ultimately benefit all who play at our Club.

The refurbishment of the Men's internal toilet has been welcomed as a huge improvement. The outside toilet project has been commenced.

September results:

8 September Weekend Stroke Monthly Medal Winner Kevin Steart Nett 72 Runner-up Laurie Lees Nett 73

25 September Mid-week Stroke Monthly Medal Winner Dean Marshall Nett 70 Runner-up Kevin Steart Nett 71

Final event for the month on the 29th. It was a two-person Ambrose.

Winners Karson Osborne-Purser/ Dean Marshall Nett 63 Runners-up on c/back Kevin Steart/Jim Shackleton Nett 63

Also during the month the Club was visited by Ballarat District Senior Ladies. The Ladies had an enjoyable day on the Course and a lovely afternoon tea was provided.

Clunes Field and Game By Lynne Jones

Clunes Field & Game Branch together with Daylesford Sporting Clays jointly hosted the 2019 Central Highlands Classic a 200 target OTG event held at the Clunes simulated range. Participants travelled from far and wide, many from interstate to compete at this annual event which has created a lot of interest on the shooters calendar.

The event attracted some 348 nominations over the two days and with the range set to perfection, a reflection of the work and planning put in over many months lead to the weekend being another huge success.

Many participants who had travelled to Clunes took advantage of the accommodation within the area and surrounds with families accompanying them happy to enjoy the many features and tourist activities in the area.

Congratulations to our Combined winner International shooter John Younger who came out a one target winner in a ‘shoot off’ between equally respected shooter and regular competitor at Clunes Matthew Libbis.
