As part of our membership to the International Organisation of Booktowns, Clunes has been invited to present on September 16 at a World Booktown Symposium to be held in Paju Bookcity in South Korea. The symposium is part of their festival, Paju Booksori.

Three members of Creative Clunes will be attending, Graeme Johnstone, Tim Hayes and Tess Brady. All three, with Linda Newitt, are part of the team that created our Booktown festival and have been actively involved since the first festival in 2007.

This is an exceptional opportunity to meet with delegates from around the world who are involved with Booktowns, to form working networks and to learn from those who have been booktowns for years.

Paju Book City is sponsoring one airfare and accommodation for the delegation. The airfare has been allotted to Tess Brady who will present at the Symposium

and Graeme Johnstone and Tim Hayes are paying their own fare. The three are meeting their own expenses.

They will be in Paju for 4 days and during that time have scheduled meetings with government and non government organisations including the Australia-Korea Foundation in a bid to explore ways in which we can develop cultural exchanges and opportunities.

There has been a lot of work behind the scenes with assistance and interest from the Daylesford & Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism Board, the Hepburn Shire Council, Catherine King MHR, Tourism Australia (Korea Office), Wine Australia (Japan), Vic Tourism, Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature and Melbourne publishers. OBITUARY. SYD DUNCANClunes lost one of her oldest and much loved citizens when Sydney Duncan passed peacefully away at the Creswick Nursing Home on July 20th aged 97.

Syd was born in 1914 , in Boulder City, West Australia where he spent his school days. He came to Clunes in 1929 to live with his grandparents in Smith Street.

Well known for his sporting activities, football, cricket, tennis and golf, Syd was also devoted to the Clunes Community. He was involved in many sporting and community organisations and was always prepared to spend time and effort to make sure that anything he was organising was enjoyable for all concerned.

Syd was a Life member of the Clunes Golf Club, a Charter member of the Clunes Lions Club,

Life Member with Meritorious Service Medal of the RSL, Clunes Community Citizen in 2001, Hepburn Shire Australia Day Citizen 1996, a member of the Clunes Museum and the Garden Club.

Syd served his country during World War 2 in the Army, mainly in New Guinea.

In 1953 he married Betty Ross and together they raised their family, Tony, Andrea, Sally and Fiona in Clunes. Syd is survived by that family and 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Syd’s life was celebrated by family and friends at Wesley Church on July 25th 2012.

Syd’s family wish to thank everyone who farewelled Syd, sent flowers, cards, phone calls, food and messages of support and sympathy. Your kindness is appreciated by us all.

G’day everyone, the crime round up for the last two months...

Over the last couple of months there has been two trailers stolen from the area, the first was a grey tandem trailer taken from a paddock in the Evansford area and the second was another grey tandem trailer taken from a residential premises in Clunes. Any info would be greatly appreciated by both myself and the owners of these trailers.

There was also a burglary on a residential property in Clunes in which a ride on mower was stolen. I have also had various minor damages caused to property reported to me over the past couple of months, again stupid irresponsible behaviour by some of our locals.

With the wet weather over the last couple of weeks it has been great to see that there have been no reported collisions in the area. Congratulations to you all for taking that bit of extra care when travelling in the area on these shocking days.

Congratulations to the CTDA on a fantastic night at the Community Dinner, I was again asked to present the award to the Clunes Young Citizen of the year, Jasmine Coleman, a very worthy winner.

At the time of writing, being Monday 20/8/12, I want to wish the ‘C’ grade netballers, reserves footy and under 18’s footy ladies and gents all the very best for the upcoming CHFNL finals.

This Friday, 24/8/12, is the Clunes Football and Netball Club junior presentation night, in which I will

again be presenting the Clunes Police Leadership Awards, best of luck to the kids.

On a personal note, I wish the Clunes Bowling Club all the best for the upcoming season and ask if there is anyone in the community who has ever thought of playing the awesome game of lawn bowls, its time to bite the bullet and come on down to the club. We are a very friendly club with members of all ages, both male and female and we are in the middle of a member recruiting drive. We welcome players either novice, professional or those who have never played before, to come along and have a try. We have plenty of social functions planned for the upcoming season and the clubrooms are open for happy hour and social indoor bowls on a Friday evening up until the start of the season. So if your interested in playing bowls please come on down and see the secretary Milky or give me a call for more information.

LANDSCAPING YOUR HOME FOR FIRE PREVENTIONA message from the Clunes Fire Brigade

Spring is here and you may want to start landscaping around your home or property

Your home and garden can blend in with the natural environment and at the same time be landscaped for fire prevention and protection. During a bushfire a well designed garden will help provide a safety zone around your home, the plant selection, arrangement, location and maintenance of your garden can help your home survive the passage of the fire front and provide you with a place to take shelter during this time.

If you live in the bush you can expect several days each summer that your home and family may be threatened by fire.

Landscaping can play a major part in the survival of your property in a bushfire.

With fire protection in mind, landscaping can reduce the amount of fine fuel, (fuel less than a fingers diameter), prevent flames reaching the house, act as a barrier from radiant heat, create a fuel reduced area between your home and the bush, minimize spark and ember threat and reduce wind speed.

Each home is different, so to assist you with information on preparing your home for bushfire the CFA has developed the “Landscaping for Bushfire: Garden Design and Plant selection” booklet. This is available free to the community.

For further information contact the Victorian Bushfire Information Line on 1800 240 667. The booklet " Landscaping for Bushfire: Garden Design and Plant selection” can be down loaded free from the CFA website at www.cfa.vic.gov.au.

CLUNES BRIGADE BENEFITS FROM EQUIPMENT GRANTSClunes rural fire brigade will share in a record $11.95 million Coalition Government investment in operational equipment and vehicle upgrades across Victoria, Member for Western Victoria David O’Brien said today.

Mr O’Brien said the brigade was among 261 volunteer emergency services units across Victoria to receive funding under the 2012/2013 Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP).

␣The brigade applied for funding under the program and I congratulate them on their success” said Mr O’Brien.

The funding for Clunes fire brigade will go towards a $60,000 Nissan Patrol Field Command Vehicle.

“It’s important that our rural brigades have efficient and modern equipment as they not only look after their own regions, but frequently help out as part of strike teams in other parts of Victoria,” Mr O’Brien said.

CLUNES WATERWAYS UPDATEHave you seen the great work being carried out at the creek???

Thanks to all those who came to the August Working Bee, the Primary School pupils and Wesley at Clunes students, without all this help we would still be looking at weeds. There has been a lot of planting and weeding at both the ford end and near the government bridge.

This work has been made possible by a 25th anniversary grant from Landcare and at present we are hoping to receive a grant from “Caring for our country”. Without these grants and the generous amount of time given by the volunteers, we would not be able to carry out the re-vegetation work of our precious asset.

Flood recovery through the Hepburn Shire are continuing their work along the creek and together we are making good progress. We are always happy to have more helpers and if you would like more information about our volunteer committee, please give us a call –June 5345 3297 or Joy – 5345 3777.

Clunes Community Housing CommitteeI was invited to attend a meeting with Kathleen Brannigan and the Clunes Community Housing Committee to discuss the conditions relating to the Expressions of Interest around handing over the running of these housing units in Clunes. Conditions which were essential to continued local participation included – ownership to remain with the local council, a local reference group to maintain the role of deciding who shall be a resident, locals to be a part of the selection panel to appoint a housing association who will be appointed to run the units, guarantee of new units being built within a reasonable short space of time and a continued plan to build further units over many decades; were all part of what was accepted at the meeting.

Flood Mitigation Public MeetingI attended with other members of the Clunes community a public meeting to discuss options for helping to improve conditions to alleviate flooding in Clunes. The main options put forward were two stages on building levees along the creek. This group was seeking feedback on their plans and options for a way forward.
