DEPARTMENT NEWS
Ann Strahle had a publication in the Journal of Media and Communication
(JMC) Volume 3, Issue 1 August 2016 called “Media Coverage of Ferguson,
Missouri: A Normative Approach.” She also teamed up with Amie Kincaid and participated in a panel discussion entitled, CODE RED: The New Reality of Communication Departments Nationwide, presented at the 101st Annual Meeting of National Communication Association in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In March, Hazel Rozema attended the
Collaborative Diversity Conference at Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. On March 16, 2016, she gave a paper titled "In Ferguson, municipal courts can mean debtor's prison," in response to the absurd amount of traffic citations given to folks in St. Louis
County.
Jae Sik Ha was awarded the “International Communication Division
Teaching Contest Award” (Third Place Winner, Globalization & Media) in the AEJMC Annual Conference, August 2016.He also traveled to Japan and Minneapolis to present at the International Communication Association Conference and the Associate for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference. His research manuscript “Tailoring the Arab Spring to American Values and Interests: A Framing Analysis of U.S. Elite Newspapers’ Opinion Pieces” has recently been accepted for publication by International Communication Gazette. Also, in September, 2016, his book chapter was published. He contributed one book chapter titled “Internet Game Addiction in East Asia: Challenges & Opportunities” in the book “Mobile Gaming in Asia: Politics, Culture and Emerging
Technologies.”
Student Representative nominations and elections were
held in September 2016. The Communication Department
Student Representatives are: Samaryaia Magee (Grad
Rep) and Remel Hoskins (Undergrad Rep).

Allyssa Brown, the Graduate Assistant. She is in the second
year of her Master’s and received her Bachelors in English
Studies from Illinois State University. She is in her office

Amie Kincaid is the Department Chair and Graduate Student Advisor. If you are interested in learning more about the department or our graduate program, please contact her. In addition to these two roles, this past spring she presented at the 85
th Annual Meeting of the Central States Communication
Association in Grand Rapids, Michigan on multiple panels. Her first panel discussions was entitled : Celebrating Dr. Stephen Rendahl (University of North Dakota): Sharing Valuable Lessons about Teaching & Learning. Another discussion she was part of, which was entitled, Teaching About Privilege to the Privileged: Establish a Foundation for New Perspectives also took place at the meeting. Her final panel discussion was titled, Our Foundation is Voice: Encouraging Voice(s) in the Introductory Classroom. The Com Dept. Office Support Specialist is Sherri Richardson. She is
located at the front of department hall in office 3010. Sherri is on
campus Monday-Friday and is always willing to help student’s
navigate through UHB!

Michael Cheney: Authored the soon to be published book Harold
Innis Reflects: Memoir and WWI Writings/Correspondence
(Critical Media Studies: Institutions, Politics, and Culture)
(available on Amazon)! He will also get the chance to present his
paper “Blood and Dirt Research: The early scholarship of Harold
Innis,” in Toronto this month.
Kathy Novak, was recently elected to a one-year term as Chair of
the University Senates Conference of the University of Illinois
System. She serves as the official spokesperson of the USC
and represents the faculty of all three University of Illinois
campuses and the three individual campus senates.
Beth Ribarsky had a busy spring and was able to be present the following:
Where should I build my foundation? Determining the type of institution
that fits you.
Teaching about privilege to the privileged: Establishing a foundation for
new perspectives.
Building strong foundations: Helping undergrads avoid the glorification
of busy.
Our foundation is voice: Encouraging voice(s) in the introductory
classroom.
Beth was also elected Secretary of the Women’s Caucus of the Central States Communication Association (Spring 2016) as well as the invited presenter for UIS Orientation Leaders, as well as for the STARS bridge program.
