AGING WELL IS ALSO A NEWSPAPER COLUMN!

Every other Saturday the Laconia Citizen publishes our Newspaper Column that usually has something to do with aging issues --- But you can also find it on our Facebook Page, on our Website or just by asking for copy. I can also add you to an Email list if you would like a copy sent to you automatically. The most recent column is entitled ‘Turning 90’ and is about some lessons that motorcycle week can teach us about successful aging.

JOKE OF THE WEEK………

A husband and wife were at a party chatting with some friends when the subject of marriage counseling came up. "Oh! We’ll never need that. My husband and I have a great relationship," the wife explained. "He was a communications major in college, and I majored in theater arts.” “He communicates really well, and I just act like I'm listening."

‘AGING WELL’ ON THE RADIO

Each Wednesday at 8:35 on WEZS 1350 AM MBCC Sponsors ‘Aging Well’ a talk show that invites a special guest to talk about issues of special interest to Seniors or that showcases the special of work of Seniors. HOW ABOUT SOME REALLY SOUND ADVICE!

Sound Advice Hearing Centers, Inc. is widely known for its comprehensive hearing and hearing aid services provided with old fashioned customer care. Founded in 1995 in Bridgewater, NH, Sound Advice Hearing Centers’ hearing instrument specialists and audiologists now deliver products and services from five convenient locations. You will find Sound Advice Hearing Centers, Inc. in Plymouth, New London, Keene, Barrington, Exeter, and Kendal at Hanover.

The Aging Well listening audience is invited to call Sound Advice Hearing Centers, Inc. at 536-4880 or 1-800/294-2944 to schedule a “no charge” baseline hearing screening to establish this important information as you approach your fifties. It’s never too late to get this vital information on record. If you believe your hearing is good, now is the time to document that.

Untreated hearing loss can mimic other conditions. It is important to determine if hearing loss is contributing to you or a family member with suspected memory issues, social withdrawal, mild cognitive impairments or early depression. As a colleague has said, “When one person in the family has a hearing loss, the entire family has a hearing problem.”

Deciding on the best hearing aid technology for your own specific needs is a process, and the providers at Sound Advice Hearing Centers, Inc. take the time to determine your communication needs and priorities. We offer products across a wide range of prices, and put you in touch with funding sources to help with your budget. Remember, our old-fashioned customer care can’t be beat!

Mention “Aging Well” when you call for your free baseline screening, and we will direct you to the office most convenient for you. It was a pleasure to speak to the Aging Well listening audience and we hope to meet you in person!

WORD OF THE WEEK…………

Monger \MUNG-gur\ noun

- broker, dealer — usually used in combination - a person who attempts to stir up or spread something that is usually petty

or discreditable — usually used in combination EXAMPLES

According to reports, the singer and actress were involved in a hot romance, but the rumormongers had it wrong—the two were just good friends. "Inside Penn Avenue Fish Co. in the Strip District, a fishmonger wearing orange rubber overalls guided a customer to West Coast halibut for its clean, mild flavor." — From an article by Melissa McCart in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, May 26, 2013

DID YOU KNOW?

Peddlers (especially fish merchants) have been called "mongers" for more than 1000 years. The term traces to a Latin noun meaning "trader." Initially, it was an honorable term, but every profession has its bad apples, and the snake-oil salesmen of the bunch gave "monger" a bad reputation. By the middle of the 16th century, the term often implied that a merchant was dishonorable and contemptible. Nowadays, "monger" is typically appended to another word to identify a trader of a particular type. Some combinations (such as "fishmonger") suggest respectable commerce, whereas others (such as "rumormonger," "scandalmonger," and "hypemonger") imply that a person is trading or spreading information in a careless or deceptive manner.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS:

“MY FAIR LADY: SPECIAL EDITION” 7:30 in the Community Room

By George, they've got it! Newly transferred from

elements pain-stakingly restored in 1994, the film

version of Lerner and Loewe's 'My Fair Lady' is lavish,

'loverly' and the acclaimed recipient of eight 1964

Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best

Director (George Cukor).

Best Actor Oscar winner Rex Harrison reprises his

signature stage role of Henry Higgins, the supremely

assured phoneticist who wagers that under his

tutelage, cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle can pass

for a duchess at the Embassy Ball. In one of her best-

loved roles, Audrey Hepburn plays Eliza. If ever there was a face the professor

could grow accustomed to, it's hers. In Hartford, Heresford and Hampshire (and

elsewhere) no one's fairer than 'My Fair Lady', one of the most irresistible

musicals ever

BONUS FEATURES:

Commentary by Art Director Gene Allen, Singer Marni Nixon, Restorers Robert A. Harris and Hames C. Katz

FROM THE

SUGGESTION BOX

A question about what is happening with the

Ospreys.

I have not received any recent updates from

the Science Center --- but will certainly let you

know as soon as I do!

A question was raised as to whether pets should be banned from all dining area.

A dilemma --- Should organizations be administered by rules and policy or by

values and appropriate discretion. I cannot tell you what the answer should be

for MBCC right here right now --- but I always worry about making general

policies in response to a specific incident/event. Part of what has made MBCC

special is the willingness to look at and hopefully address a specific issue in a very

specific way. The first question to ask is whether we have a specific issue that

needs attention here and now. Whenever possible direct action is generally a

better choice than policy……………

Support noted for not allowing non-vehicle use of the garage and a question of

whether any personal storage in the garage should be in cupboard like

enclosures.

This is a tricky one: On the one hand we have those who say it is a garage after

all and if you can’t be messy in your garage then where can you be messy? And

those on the other hand who are concerned that any disorder reflects poorly on

the entire organization. It could be that a reasonable next step would be to get a

sense of how other garage users feel on the subject?

MIDSUMMER CELEBRATION……

On July 31st at 3:30 PM MBCC will celebrate Mid Summer! There will be a

celebration with drinks, singing, gossip, and food at that time so write it on your

calendar. More later, but we want you to save the date._

FROGS IN TREES?

'"What is that sound I just heard? It isn't the sound of an ordinary bird." “Well, it isn't a bird it is a tree toad, or sometimes called a tree frog. Yesterday I was called outdoors to identify the melodious trill being heard from the tops of a tree.” “What we were hearing is a small froglike/toad called hyla versicolor. , so called because the green turns to brown and sometimes grey.. It trills from the tops of trees , probably to attract a mate. It is a lovely melodious trill, quite different from a bird. They will trill on and off all summer. And he/she eats only insects. Enjoy- they are our friends. “ Carolyn

CLOSING NOTES…………….

That was quite a storm we had tonight! I went outside to watch ands was pleasantly pleased to see that the cell phone tower did not seem to attract lightening! I don’t mean to nag --- but with more hot weather due in tomorrow --- please be sure to drink more water than usual – before you feel thirsty! It really does make a difference! Have a great week!
