Dear Eagle Ridge Community,

During the past few weeks, Eagle Ridge

and a number of students have received

numerous awards. On April 27th, Eagle

schools named a ―School to Watch.‖

Eagle Ridge has also been named in the

John Hopkins Center for Talented

Youth. We were ranked ninth out of a

hundred and seven schools in the state

of Virginia.

Our students have continued to excel in

individual and group recognition as

well. A couple of weeks ago our Jazz

Band received superior ratings at the

Festival as well as seven of our students

achieving additional honors.

Recently, several of our sixth graders;

Georgia Monroe, Kyleigh McGrail, and

award. These young ladies explored

how science, math, and technology

could be used to prevent the death of

young children and pets that have been

left in hot vehicles. Each student will

6TH GRADE Heather Brown The Keyboarding department is proud to choose Heather Brown as Student of the Month. Heather is an active participant in class and works hard to complete all her assignments with ac-curacy. She is an inquisitive learner who likes to try new things and overcome challenges. Her bubbly personality makes her a joy to have in the classroom and a wonderful member of team Phoenix. Congratulations to Heather Brown for her hard work and dedication to learning! Keyboarding Student of the Month: David Machado Congratulations to David. Keyboarding is a hard skill to master. It takes a lot of practice to get better. David submits his practice chart consistently and always remains positive during those tough timed writings. He is a pleasure to have in class.

7TH GRADE

Mrs. Gold, who teaches Latin, would like to recognize Caroline Freeman as the Foreign Lan-guage Student of the Month. Caroline has been a good student all year, however, she has really shown great improvement during the third quarter. She puts forth her best effort and her grades reflected that effort. Congratulations, Caroline, and keep up the great work! Mrs. Pollock, who teaches Spanish, would like to recognize Matthew Bartlett as The Foreign Language Student of the Month. She states that Matthew has an amazing ear for foreign lan-guages and is able to grasp the most complex grammatical subjects we have learned this year. Matthew has maintained an “A” average all three quarters. What impresses me the most about Matthew is his cool demeanor when we take the PALS speaking exam. Matthew is also a very kind and considerate student to his peers and his teacher during the Spanish class. Congratula-tions, Matthew!

8TH GRADE It is a great privilege to nominate Daniel Butler for student of the month. Daniel has developed into an excellent foreign language student. He arrives in class ready to learn and to participate. Daniel works well individually and in group settings. He is always cooperative and respectful in class. Daniel is also a hard worker and it has shown in his outstanding improvement in his speaking ability. His kind and cooperative spirit is a gift to our Spanish class and I am thankful that I have had the pleasure to be his Spanish teacher. Congratulations Daniel!

Macy Weaver set a goal for herself third quarter: to earn straight A's in each of her classes. To do this, she worked diligently to complete all French assignments, quizzes and tests to the very best of her ability, as well as seek out extra help when she didn't understand something. As such, she met her goal to obtain an A in French this quarter, and from my understanding by talking with her math teacher, she has done the same thing in that course also. Her sheer determination to excel and persevere even when confronted with adversity is what has made the difference for Macy this quarter. Macy demonstrates to each of us how we can each achieve great things if we only have high expectations for ourselves, set lofty, yet achievable goals, and work hard to make them happen. Additionally, Macy has done all of this with poise and grace, and a true enthusiasm for learning about the French language and culture. Congratulations, Macy, on being truly deserving of the Foreign Language Student of the Month award!

Our library book fair was an outstanding success and students purchased some wonderful books.

Thanks to the support of everyone, the library received $975.00 in new books and many of the ti-

tles are new for Eagle Ridge. Along with the books, we also received a cash profit which will en-

able us to continue library activities such as Accelerated Reader, and purchasing books from Junior

Library Guild which selects the best of middle school books published and sends us 8 books per

month during the school year. Our students look forward to reading books from both sources and

this is one reason our circulation generally exceeds 3,000 books per month. We could not do the

fair without our marvelous parent volunteers. They were:

PARENT LIAISON CORNER

KAREN HART

School-wide SOL testing begins at Eagle Ridge in just a few days. So I thought I would remind

you of some helpful hints to get you and your child through the testing period.

Make sure your child eats a nutritious, delicious breakfast everyday but especially during SOL

testing time. Studies show hungry kids don’t concentrate as well as kids who’ve had a good

breakfast.

Sleep! Make sure your child is getting at least eight hours of sleep each night. Find a routine

and stick with it—especially the night before a test. Again, focus suffers when a child doesn’t

get enough sleep.

Prepare in advance for the tests. A child that does an SOL practice run will be more calm on the

day of the actual test. Practice tests for all grades and subjects can be found at this website:

http://education.jlab.org/solquiz/index.html. This company has permission from the state of

Virginia Department of Education to use testing materials in an effort to provide students

the opportunity to prepare for SOL testing.

Have a discussion with your child about the SOL tests. Explain how important it is to read

through the directions before starting the test. Also encourage your child to peruse the test be-

fore taking it. This will give him/her the opportunity to become familiar with the format and

type of questions being asked. Stress to your child that it never hurts to have a general overview

of the test before beginning.

For further information and testing dates, please click on the Eagle Ridge website at http://

cmsweb1.loudoun.k12.va.us/erms/site/default.asp.

If due to a disability, you need assistance to enable you to par-

ticipate meaningfully in any meeting/conference/activity, please

contact Mrs. Beichler at 571-252-2140 at least FIVE (5)

WORKING DAYS prior to the event.

First Lego League Organizational Meeting for Parents

FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a global program created to get children excited about sci-ence and technology. A hands-on program for ages 9 to 16 (9 to 14 in the U.S. and Canada), FLL uses Challenges based on real world scientific problems to engage chil-dren in research, problem solving, and engineering. The cornerstone of the program is its Core Values, which emphasize friendly sportsmanship, learning, and community in-volvement. We are currently looking for parents that are interested in coaching, spon-soring or assisting a First Lego League team next fall. Please join Ms. Flaherty on Wednesday May 19th at 7:00pm in the library to discuss the program.

Standards of Learning (SOL) – Online Testing

For the past several years, most middle schools and high schools in Virginia have administered the Stan-dards of Learning (SOL) assessments online, rather than as paper-and-pencil tests. Online testing is now the preferred method to administer SOL assess-ments. In Loudoun County Public Schools, SOL testing will occur from May 10

th through June 11

th, with each

school setting their own schedule within that period. During May/June 2010, all grade 6-8 students in Loudoun County Public Schools will be administered their SOL assessments as online tests, unless it would be in the child’s best interest to instead take a paper-and-pencil test. The Virginia Department of Education has conducted numerous studies to ensure that the online tests are comparable to paper-and-pencil tests. That is, students would earn approximately the same score, regardless of whether they took the test on a computer or with paper-and-pencil. Also, students will have a number of different training experiences prior to actually tak-ing an SOL test online. However, for students or parents who are uncomfortable with online SOL testing, a paper-and-pencil version of the test will be made available. If you would like more information about online SOL testing, you can download to your home computer a “tutorial.” This is about a 10 minute “video,” with either accompanying sound or on-screen text, that provides an overview of online SOL testing in a variety of different subjects. From the Loudoun County Public Schools’ Internet Home Page (www.loudoun.k12.va.us), follow the path:

Quick Links > Testing > SOL Online Testing If you have any questions, please contact the School Test Coordinator at your child’s school.
