While in college, he was a three-letter winner in football and baseball. After graduating from SDSU in 1960 with a degree in economics, he was commissioned a second lieutenant and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963. He continued to serve his country through the S.D. Army National Guard. The Watertown native retired in 1989 as a brigadier general and the assistant adjutant general. In 1963, he became an insurance agent in Watertown. In 1984, he became the South Dakota manager for Farmers Union Insurance. In 1989, Jake was named president and CEO of the national organization. He retired in 2001. He is a former South Dakota legislator, having represented Codington County in the state Senate from 1973 to 1983. His wife, Phyllis (Skillman), is a 1981 SDSU history graduate. RON ALVERSON was a founding member of the South Dakota Corn Growers Association and served as the group’s president in 1990 and 1991. He served on the National Corn Growers Board of Directors in 1991 and 1992. Ron has been instrumental in the development of the state’s ethanol industry. He was a founder and chairman of the state’s first producer-owned ethanol production facility, Dakota Ethanol in Wentworth. In 2006, Ron received the “Excellence in Agriculture” award from the S.D. Corn Growers Association for his lifetime contributions to the corn industry in South Dakota. In 2007, he was recognized as an SDSU Distinguished Alumnus by the S.D. Chapter of the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture. Ron graduated from SDSU in 1974 with a degree in agronomy. His wife, Susan, is a 1977 graduate of nutrition and food science. Their son, Keith, is a 2003 agronomy graduate; daughter, Kara, is a 2005 consumer affairs graduate.

DAVID B. ANDERSON is retired from Elanco Animal Health Research and Development. His research career at Elanco focused on the discovery and development of products to improve the efficiency of livestock production. A native of Hector, MN, he earned a bachelor of science degree in animal science from SDSU in 1966 and a master’s and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin. Following four years as an Army pilot, he was an assistant professor at the University of Illinois, prior to joining Elanco. He has served on the boards of the American Society of Animal Sciences and the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology; he also served on the board and as president of the American Meat Science Association. He currently serves as chair of the AMSA Educational Foundation and is an affiliate faculty member at Colorado State University. Dave and his wife, Carol, a speech therapist, live in Loveland, CO. BRAD R. BARGMANN grew up near Chester, S.D. He graduated from SDSU in 1985 with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and from Drake University in 1990 with a master’s in business administration. His career has included positions with Walgreens and Eli Lilly. Since 1992, he has been a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investments in Rapid City, S.D. He has been a limited partner with his firm since 1996 and holds other professional designations. Brad’s wife, Dawn, is a 1985 SDSU pharmacy graduate. The couple has two children: Kyle and Connor.

KEITH BARTELS is a retired vice president of Martin Group, Inc., in Mitchell. After completing his bachelor’s degree in economics at SDSU in 1967, Keith served in the U.S. Air Force until 1971, attaining the rank of captain. He returned to SDSU and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1974. He then joined the staff of SSR Engineers in Billings, MT. In 1977, he returned to Mitchell and became vice president of Martin Group. He has been a registered professional engineer since 1978. Keith served on the SDSU Alumni Association Council from 1989 to 1993. He was a member of the Mitchell Technical Institute Foundation Board of Directors from 2000 to 2008. He served on the Oscar Howe Art Center/Middle Border Museum Board in Mitchell from 1998 to 2004. From 1998 to 2000, he served on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Transmission and Distribution Underground Subcommittee. For 20 years, Keith has maintained membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ Rural Electric Power Committee, serving as chairman in 1999. From 1980 to 2001, Keith served on the Mitchell Technical Institute’s Electrical Construction and Maintenance Program Advisory Board, serving as chair from 1985 to 1990. JAY BENDER is president of Falcon Plastics, a custom manufacturing company specializing in injection molding, blow molding, assembly and toolmaking. The company has facilities in Brookings, Madison and Lexington, TN. Jay earned his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from SDSU in 1982. During his college and high school years, Jay worked at the family business, Falcon Plastics, Inc. After graduating from SDSU, he joined the E. F. Johnson Company in Waseca, MN, as manufacturing engineer. He then worked for Rubbermaid, Inc. in Wooster, OH, as a tooling engineer. In 1987, he returned to Brookings and joined Falcon Plastics, Inc., as tooling manager. Falcon Plastics, Inc. was named Business of the Year for South Dakota in 1991 and Manufacturer of the Year for South Dakota in 1993 by the South Dakota Chamber of Commerce. Jay has served on the boards of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce, Brookings Area United Way and Children’s Home Society. He also served on advisory boards for SDSU, Lake Area Technical Institute, the South Dakota Family Business Initiative and Youth Business Adventure. RICHARD BERRETH received his mechanical engineering degree from SDSU in 1958. He then earned his master of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1962. He took 30 additional credits toward a Ph.D. in Operations Research from the University of Iowa. He spent 37½ years working with five different Fortune 500 companies, including 19 years at the executive level. In his role as Vice President of Manufacturing, Richard was responsible for all manufacturing operations, quality, manufacturing engineering and information technology. In 1997, he was named a Distinguished Engineer by the SDSU College of Engineering.

DOUG BERKLAND is principal of Sayre Associates, a multi-disciplined Sioux Falls-based firm of civil engineers and land surveyors providing quality professional services to public and private clients. The company was founded in 1969. Doug earned his civil engineering degree from SDSU in 1971. He is a past chair of the Board of Directors of South Dakota Achieve, a not-for-profit that provides support services to people with developmental disabilities. He is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. Doug is currently serving as Church Council president at his church. DAVID BLEGEN of Rochester, MN, is retired after 42 years in business management at IBM and Pemstar. After graduating from SDSU in 1964 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he joined IBM in Rochester and spent 33 years in various staff and management positions in manufacturing, development, marketing and headquarters operations in Rochester, as well as in Atlanta, GA, and Boca Raton, FL. DARWIN BRITZMAN is president of International Nutrition Consulting, Inc. In his 32-plus years with GTA Feed Division of Harvest States Cooperatives, he held the positions of nutritionist; nutrition, research and technical services director; and general manager and vice president. In 1994, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus for Service to SDSU. He was honored at SDSU’s Little International for his contributions to agriculture. The Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce recognized him as Agri-Business Citizen of the Year in 1984. Darwin obtained a bachelor’s degree in poultry science from SDSU in 1953. He continued his education, first earning a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and then returning to SDSU to earn his doctorate in 1964. Darwin and his wife, JoAnn, have three grown children: Shari Platek, a nurse; Steve Britzman, a lawyer and certified public accountant; and Mark Britzman, professor in the SDSU College of Education and Human Sciences. Darwin served on the Foundation’s Executive Committee and was a cabinet member for the successful Visions for the Future / $50 million for SDSU campaign. Since 1994 he has worked as a consultant, which has taken him to 22 countries on numerous occasions.

JILL BUCKSTEAD graduated with a bachelor’s degree in home economics education from SDSU in 1958. She went on to teach at Yankton Junior High School. Later she taught word processing at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS. She also has held leadership positions in many volunteer organizations, including the Crosslines Cooperative Council in Kansas City, KS, an emergency assistance organization, and the Advanced Gift Committee Pipe Organ and Capital Campaign at Colonial UCC in Prairie Village. She is a member of the Development Steering Committee for the SDSU College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her late husband, John, was a retired executive vice president of PACCAR. ED CANNON is CEO of Zivix, LLC, a Minneapolis startup company that has developed a unique technology combining software and hardware that enables a new generation of digital music interfaces compatible with video game consoles and computers. A native of Sioux Falls, Ed graduated from SDSU in 1974 with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He spent the first years of his career with the Westinghouse Power Systems group before leaving to cofound Cannon Technologies in 1987. Cannon Technologies was one of the first true “smart-grid” companies, helping electric utilities better manage demand response, substation automation and smart meters. Cannon Technologies was acquired by Cooper Industries in 2006. He joined Zivix in November 2008. In 2007, Ed was named a Distinguished Engineer by the SDSU College of Engineering. He is an Entrepreneur in Residence at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Brookings-based Enterprise Institute. He and his wife, Judy, live in Plymouth, MN, and are active in community work in the Minneapolis area. They have four children: Christine, Matthew, Elizabeth and Meredith.

Prior to assuming the presidency, Chicoine was vice president for technology and economic development, a professor of agricultural economics, and a member of the Institute for Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois. As vice president, he served as senior officer and advisor to the president and the university’s Trustees on technology commercialization and economic development issues. Before that appointment, he served as dean of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Prior to that, he was head of the Department of Agricultural Economics. He served 11 years as Faculty Athletics Representative to the Big Ten Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. An Elk Point, SD, native, Chicoine graduated from SDSU in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in agribusiness. He later obtained a master’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Delaware, a master of arts in economics from Western Illinois University and a doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. JEFFREY CHICOINE has been a Managing Director of Mesirow Advanced Strategies, Inc. (MAS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mesirow Financial Holdings, Inc., in Chicago, IL. He was a member of the Management Committee of MAS and had responsibility for the business development and client service activities of MAS. Chicoine began working for MAS in 1999; 90 percent of the assets of MAS are derived from institutional investors, with 52 percent from non-U.S.-based investors. Prior to joining MAS, Chicoine had business development responsibilities with the corporate finance departments of ABN AMRO, Inc.; Bank of American Securities, Inc.; Lehman Brothers; and the Northern Trust Company. A native of South Dakota, Chicoine graduated from SDSU in 1968 with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural economics. In 1970, he earned a master’s of business administration with a concentration in finance from the University of Iowa. He also received an M.A. in accounting from DePaul University in 1978. After commissioning from ROTC at SDSU, Chicoine served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1970 until 1972. He remained in the active reserve until 1976, achieving the rank of captain. MARILYN (REVELL) DeLONG of St. Paul, MN, is a professor in the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. She earned her master’s degree from Michigan State University in 1962 and her doctorate in 1967 from Ohio State University. In 1968, she became an assistant professor at Iowa State University. She joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1975 and advanced to professor in 1986 and Buckman Professor of Design Education in 1996. From 1995-2010, she served in administrative roles, including deputy director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and associate dean for Research and Graduate Education. She is a charter fellow of the International Textile and Apparel Association and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Design and Aesthetics in 2000. The Brookings native is a 1961 SDSU home economics education graduate. She has served on the advisory boards of the SDSU College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the South Dakota Art Museum. She was named an SDSU Distinguished Alumna for Service to Education in 2001. Her husband, Max, a 1961 agricultural engineering graduate, is retired from Xcel Energy in Minneapolis. Before joining First Premier Bank in 1995, Dykhouse worked 12 years as vice president of Western Bank in Sioux Falls. Both companies are located in Salt Lake City. Prior to starting his own companies, Errol was supervisor of various research divisions for Sandia National Laboratories. The Rapid City native earned his bachelor’s degree from SDSU in electrical engineering in 1962. He continued his studies at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, earning his master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1963 and his doctorate in 1965. He also earned a master’s degree in industrial administration from the University of New Mexico in 1974. BARBARA (BERKLAND) FISHBACK earned her bachelor’s degrees in textiles and clothing and home economics education in 1972 and her master’s degree in education and counseling in 1979, both from SDSU. While attending SDSU, she was active in student government and was elected Students’ Association vice president. In 2004, Barbara was recognized as an SDSU Distinguished Alumna. BILL FOLKERTS is co-owner of a real estate development, investment and management company that handles residential and commercial property, including convenience stores and motels. Folkerts split his early college years between working in Algeria, then traveling and working in Washington, D.C. The businessman received a bachelor’s degree in mechanized agriculture in 1969 and a master’s degree in economics in 1971, both from SDSU. While in college, he was a member of the Little International staff, an officer in the International Relations Club and an officer in the Mechanized Ag Club. While finishing his degrees, he served as Assistant Foreign Student Advisor and Assistant Placement Director. In 1971, Bill was instrumental in forming South Dakota’s first Development District. He served as director of the organization for many years before entering private business in the early 1990s. He is currently an officer and director on many corporate boards. DAN H. GEE is currently executive director of the South Dakota Agri-cultural and Rural Leadership (SDARL), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to identifying and developing leadership for agriculture and rural communities in South Dakota. Dan is an SDSU professor emeritus of animal and range science. From 1969-2000, he was a professor of animal science at SDSU. He has 35 years of teaching, extension and research experience in the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences. During that time, he received several Outstanding Teacher awards. Other honors bestowed on Dan include: SDSU Distinguished Alumnus for Service to SDSU, SDSU Livestock Judging Team Hall of Fame, Ag Businessman of the Year by South Dakota Cattleman’s Association and Rotary Foundation of Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award. EUGENE “GENE” GOODALE of Pekin, IL, is a former patent attorney for Caterpillar Inc. After graduating from SDSU in 1957 with a degree in civil engineering, Gene served as a communications officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1962 and attained the rank of captain. He received his law degree from the Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C., in 1965. He worked as a patent attorney for Bendix Corp. in Dayton, OH, for three years before joining Avco Corp. in Cincinnati in 1968. MERLIN “MERL” HACKBART, a Watertown native, graduated from SDSU in 1963 with a major in agricultural economics and received his Ph.D. in economics from Kansas State University in 1968. He received his U.S. Army commission while at SDSU and served in the Army from 1966 to 1968 and attained the rank of captain. Merl served in the Kneip Administration in the early 1970s and has been associated with the University of Kentucky since 1973. Currently, he is Provost’s Distinguished Service Professor of Finance and Public Policy and Associate Dean of the Gatton College of Business and Economics at UK. In addition to his work at the university, Merl has served twice as Kentucky State Budget Director and has been an economic and state finance advisor to several Kentucky governors. CHRISTINE HAMILTON is the Managing Partner of Christiansen Land and Cattle, Ltd., a large diversified farming and ranching operation in central South Dakota. She is a partner of Dakota Packing, Inc., a Las Vegas-based company that provides center-of-the-plate protein products to Las Vegas and the southwest. In addition, she and her family formed the MHCH Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation established to promote South Dakota and its future in the changing global economy. Christine also serves on the boards of directors of a number of other entities, including Home Federal Bank; Home Federal Financial Corporation; South Dakota Rural Enterprise, Inc.; Northern Great Plains, Inc.; and SDBio. HAROLD C. HOHBACH was a patent lawyer and a former partner in the firm of Flehr, Hohbach, Test, Albritton & Herbert, with offices in San Francisco and Palo Alto, CA. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1947. From 1947 to 1949, he worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. as a sales trainee and engineer. In 1952, he received his law degree from the Boalt School of Law at UC, Berkeley. He then joined the law firm of Flehr & Swain in San Francisco as an associate patent lawyer. In 1958, he became a partner in the firm, which in 1963 changed to Flehr, Hohbach, Test, Albritton & Herbert. He remained with the firm until it merged with Dorsey and Whitney of Minneapolis on May 2, 2002, at which time he retired from the practice of patent law. Harold has spent his career prosecuting patents in electronics, semiconductors and medical devices throughout the United States. He is now active in real estate management and development. DELORIS (MANGELS) JENSEN of Golden Valley, Minn., was named a SDSU Distinguished Alumna in 2000 for Service to Home Community. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1954 and her master’s degree in 1957, both in home economics at SDSU. STEVE KIRBY is a founding partner of Bluestem Capital Company. He is a graduate of Arizona State University with a bachelor of science degree in political science and a graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree. Steve was secretary and senior claims counsel for Western Surety Company, a national surety bond company, from 1977-1992. He was the 35th Lieutenant Governor of the state of South Dakota from 1993 through 1995. He was also a candidate for governor of South Dakota in 2001-02. FRANK KURTENBACH, a 1961 SDSU health sciences graduate, is a member of the Board of Directors Daktronics, Inc., which manufactures, markets and services large computer programmable displays, primarily scoreboards and large-screen video systems, on a global basis. A native of Dimock, S.D., Kurtenbach spent two years as a commissioned officer in the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY. A three-year letter-winner in football and wrestling for SDSU, Frank spent 16 years coaching and teaching. He returned to SDSU to earn his master’s degree in health sciences in 1969. During that time, he was head coach of the Jackrabbit wrestling team. In the late 1970s, Frank joined Daktronics, where he is known as a champion for creating student opportunities within the company and helping to expand its internship program. PETE LOOBY, M.D., a Yankton native, graduated from Lincoln High School in 1981. He graduated with honors in 1986 from Stanford University and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa with degrees in both medical microbiology and human biology. Selected to receive a Distinguished Student Scholarship to Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, Dr. Looby was awarded entrance into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and won the Robert Carter Medical School Prize as a junior medical student. He graduated first in his class in 1990. Dr. Looby completed orthopedic surgery residency at the University of New Mexico in 1995. In 1996, Dr. Looby concluded an orthopedic surgery sports medicine fellowship at Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital. JEROME “JERRY” LOHR is president of J. Lohr Properties and the J. Lohr Winery, both located in San Jose, CA. J. Lohr Properties was started in 1965 by Jerry. The company develops land and builds custom homes, condominiums and townhomes in Santa Clara and Monterey counties of California. The J. Lohr Winery was founded in 1974 with national product distribution beginning in 1979. Jerry earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from SDSU in 1958 and his master’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University in 1959. He also completed the bulk of the work for a doctorate in civil engineering at Stanford. From 1961 to 1965, the Clark County native served as a research scientist and captain in the U.S. Air Force with duty at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field. Jerry served as national chairman of the SDSU Foundation’s successfully completed “Visions for the Future / $50 million for SDSU” capital campaign. From 1992 to 1994, he served as chairman of the SDSU Foundation Board of Directors. He was honored as an SDSU Distinguished Alumnus in 1983 for his contributions to the SDSU Alumni Association. In 1998, the SDSU College of Engineering honored him as one of three Distinguished Engineers in recognition of his career accomplishments. RAY MAYO retired from his sales manager position at Micro Focus Corporation. In 1979, he became a co-founder of Productivity Software in Chicago. After selling the company, Ray held various executive and sales management positions in the computer software industry. After college graduation, he joined IBM, followed by a three-year ROTC term as a research officer in the U.S. Air Force. JIM MORGAN is Chief Executive Officer of Daktronics, Inc. Daktronics designs, manufactures, markets and services large computer programmable displays, primarily scoreboards and large-screen video systems, on a global basis. Jim has been with the company since 1970, while a graduate student obtaining his master’s degree in engineering at SDSU. From 1971 until 1999, Jim led the Daktronics engineering department. Jim was responsible for the design of the first Daktronics scoreboard, the Matside® wrestling scoreboard and the first Daktronics outdoor electronic message center. Jim became president of Daktronics in 1999, and CEO in 2001. He earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from SDSU in 1969. PATRICIA “PAT” MICKELSON, a native of Bushnell, S.D, earned her bachelor’s degree in English from SDSU in 1970. After receiving her master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University in 1971, she held supervisory and administrative positions in medical school libraries at the Medical College of Georgia, The Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland. She retired after serving 17 years as director of the Health Sciences Library System at the University of Pittsburgh. During her tenure (1986-2003) at the University of Pittsburgh, she oversaw a major expansion of resources and services to develop the library system into one of the foremost academic health sciences libraries in the country. Pat served as national president and six-year member of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Science Library Directors. In 2003, she received recognition from her association colleagues for her successful initiation of a long-term program to develop future leadership for academic health sciences libraries in the United States. Pat is currently serving as a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Science. She is married to Lt. Col. Joseph J. Drach, who is retired from the U.S. Air Force. Joe received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his master’s in public administration from The George Washington University. PAUL MORIARTY has played an important role in the growth of the Brookings community through his businesses: Moriarty Construction, Moriarty Enterprises, Inc., and Moriarty Apartment Rentals. Moriarty Enterprises, Inc., was awarded the 2009 Family Business of the Year award by the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. Paul was born and raised in Brookings. He has been active on the SDSU Foundation board for 43 years. He also served as vice president and two years as president of the board. He graduated from SDSU in 1953 with a degree in civil engineering. While at SDSU, he was active in American Society of Civil Engineers and Newman Club. After graduation, he was employed with Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, KS, in the Stress Analysis Division. In 1955, he began serving two years in the U.S. Army. In 1957, Paul started his construction company, building homes. The business later expanded to include commercial development and apartments. He and his wife, Doris, live at Lake Campbell, south of Brookings. Paul’s three stepchildren; sister Cecilia, a home economics major; and brothers Joseph and John, pharmacy majors, are all SDSU alumni. Paul enjoys golfing, snow skiing, playing bridge and traveling. He is active in a number of community organizations.

SELA (WHEALY) NAGELHOUT graduated from SDSU in 1979 with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She practiced as an ER and ICU nurse in Sioux City, Sioux Falls, Milwaukee and St. Louis. She served on the founding board of the not-for-profit Prairie Heart Guest House in Sioux Falls. She received a master’s degree in counseling from the College of Education and Human Sciences at SDSU in 2009 and is currently in practice at Pursuing the Good Life Professional Counseling & Consultation Services, LLC. Sela is married to David Nagelhout, a 1979 SDSU biology graduate, who is a cardiologist at North Central Heart Institute and is one of the founding partners of Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls. JEFF MUCHOW is a veteran of food and agricultural processing in-dustries. His current work centers on senior management involvement in business startups, mergers and turnaround situations for food processing enterprises. He received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from SDSU in 1968, a master’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri in 1970, and an MBA from the University of North-ern Colorado in 1976. Jeff was former chairman of the South Dakota State University Foundation and is now a member of the SDSU Council of Trust-ees. He is currently a member of Universal Capital Management Board of Directors; Foundation Board of Church of the Resurrection, Leawood, KS; and Foundation for FarmHouse Fraternity International. LARRY NESS is chairman and chief executive officer for First Dakota National Bank, which has locations in 10 South Dakota communities and three Nebraska locations. GORDON NIVA grew up in Brown County and graduated from Frederick High School. He graduated from SDSU in 1973 with a double major in engineering physics and chemistry. As an SDSU student, Gordon worked as a resident assistant and served on the Hobo Day Committee for four years. In 1976, he was honored as Weary Wil at Hobo Day. Gordon married Susan Lahr, a 1975 pharmacy graduate, in 1975 while attending graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Gordon received a master’s degree in physics in 1975 and a doctorate in astrophysics in 1979. He was hired by Rockwell International of Anaheim, CA, and worked in system engineering and management of advanced missile systems until 1996. Since 1996 Gordon has worked for the Boeing Company as a business development and systems engineering manager for integrated air and missile defense systems. Gordon is currently assigned to the Washington, D.C., office to lead a Boeing team delivering Command and Control, Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) capability for the global Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS). Gordon is an internationally recognized lecturer on management, system engineering and system-of-systems engineering. He spent 30 years in the U.S. Army National Guard and progressed to the rank of full colonel. Both Gordon and Susan, also a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, are avid marathon runners and have run 25 consecutive Los Angeles Marathons as a married couple. They also enjoy international and adventure travel, having conquered the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in 2008 and completed a trek in Patagonia, Chile, in 2010.

TOM OLSEN operates a family farm operation in Jerauld County. After graduating from State in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, Tom served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force until 1973 as an HC-130 aircraft commander. He is a former member of the South Dakota Board of Regents, having served from 1989 to 1995 and president of the board in 1993. He is a member of the South Dakota Community Foundation. EDWARD PARKHURST retired in 1996 from his position as project director for Quantum Consulting, headquartered in Berkeley, CA. In his six years with the company, he implemented and managed several multi-state technical marketing research projects for several major electrical utility companies. Prior to that, the DeSmet native had founded and served as president of Electronic Manufacturing Consultants, Inc., which he sold in 1989. From 1966 to 1967, Ed served in the U.S. Navy where he completed OCS and basic flight training and spent one tour in Vietnam. DR. CAROL J. PETERSON is Emerita Provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at SDSU. She came to SDSU in 1977 to serve as dean of the College of Nursing before advancing to her current position in 1987. Prior to joining the SDSU team, Dr. Peterson was vice president for educational development, evaluation and research at St. Mary’s Junior College in Minneapolis, which is now part of the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul. She earned her nursing diploma in 1960 from the Methodist-Kahler School of Nursing, Rochester, MN, and her bachelor’s degree in nursing education from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1963. The Sibley, IA, native earned her master’s degree in nursing education from the University of Minnesota in 1964 and her doctorate in higher education from University of Minnesota in 1969. In 1995, Dr. Peterson was honored by the SDSU Alumni Association as recipient of its award for Distinguished Service to South Dakota. The SDSU College of Nursing honored her with presentation of its Distinguished Service Award in 1987. She received the First Woman of Distinction Award from SDSU in 2001. In October 2004 she received the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota Nurses Association. LISA RICHARDSON serves as the executive director of the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council and the South Dakota Corn Growers Association. Lisa worked in Washington, D.C., doing ag policy work for Senator Larry Pressler in the U.S. Senate from 1990 through 1996. In 1997, she began working for the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council. Under her leadership, South Dakota began developing farmer-owned ethanol plants and has been instrumental in successful value-added ethanol plants throughout South Dakota. ROSEMARY ROUNDS is a former state nutritionist for the South Dakota Health Department. She and her late husband, Marlin Scarborough, owned and operated the Scarborough Ranch near Hayes in central South Dakota. Rosemary is a 1964 SDSU foods and nutrition graduate. While at State, the Doland native served as Little International women’s coordinator and served on the Hobo Day committee, Angel Flight, and the Board of Control. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Dietetic Internship in 1965. Her career has included teaching at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School and serving as a consultant dietitian in local hospitals and nursing homes. Rosemary was the state coordinator of the Dietetic Internship Program. She was a member of the Development Steering Committee for the SDSU College of Family and Consumer Sciences. She is married to Don Rounds, a retired business executive. She has three grown children: Michelle Julian, Rapid City, SD; Marc Scarborough, Hayes; and Ryan Scarborough, Tsaile, AZ. DUANE SANDER, co-founder of Daktronics, Inc., began his career at SDSU in 1967 and has served as professor of Electrical Engineering, director of Engineering Extension, head of General Engineering, acting dean of Engineering, and dean of Engineering. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1960 and his master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical engineering from Iowa State University. After his retirement from SDSU, Duane served as Director of Special Projects at the SDSU Foundation. He has been instrumental in the development of the Enterprise Institute and has been active with the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. Duane and his wife, Phyllis, live in Brookings and Lead.

DONNA SHARP graduated from SDSU in 1971 with a bachelor of science degree in animal science. An Aberdeen native, Donna has served on several national promotion boards, including the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and the National Dairy Board. Donna has also served on several local and community service boards, including the Brown County Fair Board and Avera St. Luke’s Hospital Board. She also served as a 4-H leader for many years. Donna and her husband, Gary, also 1971 SDSU graduate, along with their three children and their families, operate a dairy farm near Bath, SD. They raise corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa to meet the feed needs of their 85-head dairy herd. They also raise and sell dairy replacement heifers. Donna also works as a postmaster reserve at the local Post Office. LYLE SOLEM is the former president of Solem Associates, a full-service management consulting firm with clients in Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States. Prior to starting his own business in 1987, Lyle held numerous management positions with IBM during his 27-year career. He spent five years as an engineer and 22 years as a manager within the IBM Development Laboratory and IBM’s Corporate Education program. He won three IBM Corporate Presidents Awards for Excellence in Management. The Clear Lake native is a 1959 SDSU electrical engineering graduate. After college graduation, he began his career as a development engineer with General Motors AC Spark Plug Division developing guidance systems for the Titan missile. He has served on numerous city and church committees. Presently, he is very active in Kiwanis and SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Businesses.” SCORE’s mission is to counsel individuals wishing to start a new business and/or counsel companies that may be having problems/concerns. In 1997, Lyle served as Governor of the Minnesota/Dakotas Kiwanis International District. JOHN SUNDET is currently president and executive director of the Twin Cities CEO Roundtable. He is the former president and CEO of Homecrest, Inc. in Wadena, MN, and the former president and CEO of Rollerblade, Inc., of Minneapolis. He also has worked for Ralston Purina, Land O’Lakes, Pillsbury and Tonka Toys. He previously served as the board chairman of the Enterprise Institute in Brookings. John earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from SDSU in 1970. He went on to earn his master of business administration in finance from the University of Oklahoma in 1973. While at SDSU, John was active in forensics, debate and the U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. John Sundet

JOHN “MATT” SUTTON is a retired rancher and currently a partner in Sutton Bay Golf, LLC, an upscale recreation complex on his ranch north of Pierre. He graduated from SDSU in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. In college, Matt was active in a variety of activities including: Jackrabbit football, Rodeo Club, livestock judging team, Students Association Senate, and Hobo Day Committee. After graduation, he returned to the ranch where he continued to be a leader. Matt served in the S.D. Legislature as a member of the House of Representatives from 1963 to 1966. He later served as chief clerk of the state House chamber from 1973 to 1974. He also served 10 years on the S.D. Board of Regents completing two years as president. He has been recognized locally, statewide and nationally for his accomplishments in agriculture. In 1976, he was named an SDSU Distinguished Alumnus for Service to South Dakota. In 1999, the rancher was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame for his contributions to agriculture in the state. ROBERT TODD spent nearly his entire professional career in service to students and universities. Following his graduation from SDSU in 1968 with a degree in economics, Bob received his master of business administration from Northern Illinois University. He also attended and received certification from the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management program. After serving several years as an armor officer in the Army, he was employed at the University of South Carolina as director of the Russell House, the university student union. In 1976, he was named director of the Illini Union at the University of Illinois and served in various administrative positions at the university for 28 years. During those years, he held the positions of associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs and executive director for auxiliary services, interim athletic director, and associate vice president for administration for the University System. Following his retirement from the University, Bob served as a consultant for design and construction of facilities at the University of Illinois, including the University of Illinois Alumni Center and the newly opened project of a combined university and private developer hotel conference center in the University Research Park. Bob grew up in Huron, where his mother still resides. Bob met his wife, Diane (Cockle), a 1968 home economics education graduate, at SDSU. They have one son, one daughter and five grandchildren.

WESLEY “WES” TSCHETTER is vice president of Finance and Business at SDSU. He has had chief financial officer responsibilities at SDSU since 1982. Prior to that, he worked for the South Dakota Budget Office for one year and for the South Dakota Legislative Research Council for 10 years, including seven years as director. Wes is a 1969 agriculture engineering graduate of SDSU and earned a master’s of business administration in 1971. He has served on the South Dakota Retirement System Board of Trustees for 17 years, on the South Dakota Cement Plant Commission for four years and on the Brookings School Board for 12 years. He is currently a member of the South Dakota Investment Council. He is a consultant evaluator/accrediting team member for the Higher Learning Commission. Wes is currently vice president and treasurer of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. KIM TYLER is vice president of Customer Team Sales with the Kellog Company. She earned her bachelor’s degree in commercial economics from SDSU in 1982 and joined Kellogg in 1983. ALAN “AL” TUNTLAND is the former owner of Schmidt Printing in Rochester, MN. He retired in 1994 and continues to live in Rochester. After graduating from SDSU in 1962 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. for a year. Al earned a master’s degree in industrial administration from Purdue University in 1964. He worked in the management services department of Touche, Ross (now Deloitte, Touche) from 1964 to 1969. He worked for two years as controller for Wilson Learning Corp., then purchased Interstate GMC Truck (a General Motors truck dealership) and moved to Rochester. Five years later, he sold the dealership. In 1976, Al purchased Schmidt Printing, which he ran until his retirement in 1994. In the past, he served as chairman of the Rochester Area Foundation and chairman of the Rochester School Board. Al also served as a director of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Printers. CATHRENE (DREWS) VOELZKE of Brookings retired from the Midwest Dairy Association in 2004. The Gregory native is a 1966 SDSU family and consumer sciences education graduate. She earned a master’s degree in 1988 at SDSU in nutrition education. After college graduation, Cathy taught home economics at schools in Wessington Springs and Rapid City until 1981. She then returned to Brookings and worked as a research associate for the SDSU colleges of Nursing and Family and Consumer Sciences. In 1984, she became nutrition educator for the United Dairy Industry of South Dakota. After state dairy associations consolidated, she served as Midwest Dairy Association nutrition marketing program manager from 1993-2004. Since 1995, she has served on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the SDSU College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her husband, Vernon, a 1972 SDSU mechanical engineering graduate, retired from Daktronics, Inc. KATHRYN “KATHY” WALKER is managing director at OPENAIR Ventures, a venture capital firm in Kansas City, MO, that is focused on innovation and invention in the wireless space. The firm invests in early stage innovation in the mobile sector. Prior to this role, Walker was the Chief Network and Information Officer at Sprint Nextel, where she was employed for more than 24 years. In this position, she was responsible for the planning, design and operation of all information technology and network organizations within the company. Walker was the first network officer to combine the operations of wireless and wireline telecommunications, a current trend that other operators around the globe are replicating. In addition, she was responsible for deploying the first national 3G wireless network in North America. Kathy holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from SDSU, as well as master of science and professional engineering degrees from Missouri S&T. In addition to her engagements at SDSU, Walker serves on the Board of Trustees for MS&T and the Engineering Advisory Board. CALVIN “CAL” WILLEMSSEN is Executive Vice President of External Relationships for First National Bank in Sioux Falls. He also serves on the bank’s board of directors. Cal earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanized agriculture in 1968 and his master’s degree in speech in 1972, both from SDSU. MYRON WILLIAMS owns and operates a ranch with his sons near Wall. He holds positions with many national, state, and local beef organizations. Currently, he serves as a director of the Cattleman’s Beef Promotion and Research Board, representing the South Dakota beef producers. Myron is a past chairman of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Federation Division, a past director of the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, chairman of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association Federal Lands Committee, chairman of South Dakota State University’s Steers for State program, president of the Black Hills Cattlemen, and a county director for the Pennington County Farm Bureau. In addition, Myron has also served as a director for the National Livestock and Meat Board, a director for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, the president of the South Dakota 4-H Rodeo Association, a director of the Central States Fair, a director of the South Dakota High School Rodeo, and a member of the Wall School Board. Brigadier Gen. MYRNA HENNRICH WILLIAMSON retired in 1989 as the senior female officer in the United States Army. Her final assignment was Deputy Director of Army Military Personnel Management in the Pentagon. Her 28-year career included recruiting, public relations, staff assignments, training of officer and enlisted personnel, personnel policy development, and eight years of command. This Gregory dairy farm native served overseas in Korea and Germany. Unique challenges included conducting Army basic training for Eskimos in Alaska, and serving four years as U.S. Delegate to a NATO Committee. General Williamson earned a bachelor of science degree in English from SDSU Summa Cum Laude in 1960, and a master’s degree in human relations from the University of Oklahoma. In 1984, she was named SDSU Distinguished Alumnus for Professional Achievement. In her civilian career, Gen. Williamson has served as a business consultant, motivational speaker, and member of numerous professional associations. She divides her time between homes in Springfield, VA, and Sioux Falls, where she relishes “great-aunt” status to 24 grand-nieces and nephews.

WALT WOSJE was hired in 1984 as Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Michigan Milk Producers, a dairy cooperative with 3,000 dairy farmers and annual sales of $500 million. He retired in 2003, but was then asked to head up a new organization in the dairy business organized by the National Milk Producers Federation in Arlington, VA. As Chief Operating Officer of Cooperatives Working Together, Walt directed and carried out dairy product export programs and dairy herd retirement programs to maintain a proper relationship between U.S. milk supply and demand. Walt’s commuting between Brookings and Virginia ended when he fully retired in December 2009. Walt graduated from SDSU in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in dairy science. He was also a ROTC graduate and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After serving in the Army for two years, he returned to SDSU and earned a master’s degree in agricultural economics. Walt’s wife, Yvonne, participates in volunteer projects in the Brookings area. Walt and his son, Kyle, have a beef cow/calf operation near Elkton. Walt is a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD, and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
