From your Regional Coordinator…

As I sit here writing today, the temperature outside is going to approach 60 degrees – that, after yesterday’s ice storm. It has been a most unusual winter with spring fast approaching. Our annual Holiday Party, “Christmas Cheer,” was great fun, thanks to the members of Do Drops on Roses. The centerpieces carried out the theme of the event in a very unusual way: made in Margarita glasses. Thirteen centerpieces were created and given as door prizes to attendees. As the day ended, The Friday Conundrums volunteered to host next year’s Holiday Party. Thanks ladies and gentlemen! We can’t wait to see what your theme will be!

This year will be a very busy one for miniaturists in Region E-1. It begins with the Delaware Miniature Show on March 24. We have been asked to exhibit at their show and would love to have a good representation. So if you have your Corner Store finished and/or your alcove completed, please consider them for the “Maryland” part of the exhibit room. If you can’t go and still would like to exhibit, please let me know so that we can arrange to take your exhibit with us.

On April 13, many of us will be heading south to Glenside in Richmond for their Virginia State Day - “An Asian Retreat Teahouse & Garden.” Check for more information in this issue of the Tiny Tattler.

Do you have a favorite “Playtime Memory?” Several of us will be going to Lexington for the All Scales Houseparty. I am especially looking forward to the round tables and workshops! I believe that at this time the house party is filled.

In July we will be winging our way to the National Convention in Tucson. Our own Inch by Inch of Miniature Club of Annapolis has created one of the centerpieces for “A Night in the Museum.” I wonder whether Teddy Roosevelt will be on his horse in one of the centerpieces.

If you have never been to a Houseparty, you will have an opportunity to not only attend but plan your own in conjunction with the Houseparty in the Gazette. You may want to do parts of the “Over the Hill Retreat” event, or spread the activities out over time, or you might even want to get a group together and do parts of it over a weekend. It is all up to you. You will get suggestions for luncheons, as well as be able to register for door prizes and houseparty helpers. What an exciting way to participate in another NAME event!

The next edition of the Tiny Tattler will share some pictures of the various events that have been going on, so get out your cameras and then send some to Anita at [email protected].

CHANGE IN THE TINY TATTLER: From this issue on, all forms will be available on our Regional website instead of included in the Tattler. Just go to www.nameregione1.org to print them out. If you do not have a computer, please check with someone in your club for a copy. If you do not belong to a club, it is a great way to find one near to you. If you cannot find a form, please let me know and I will send you whichever ones you might wish to have. Please list all so they can be sent all at once.

Happy Mini-ing,Olivia

… From the Northern VA State Reps…

It is hard to believe that last month we were helping set up 3 exhibits in one weekend. Then the next weekend a mini Christmas party. A fleeting thought was that after the holidays, when we put away our minis from being on display, we should take a moment and see if there is anything to donate to the Virginia State Day 2013.

Now that the holidays are over and as we put away our minis, what a good time to organize a little. When looking at your stash of minis do you ever find yourself just looking at a miniature item and pondering… “Why did I buy it?” “What was I going to do with it?” “What was I thinking?” The Virginia State Day 2013, “An Asian Retreat Teahouse and Garden,” would love to find your miniature item(s) a home with someone who would appreciate it. It could be donated to Door Prizes or State Day Helpers. Let’s not forget Tote Bag Favors. What little gems will you find in your Tote Bags?

These forms can be found in this issue of the Tiny Tattler or on E1 Regional website. The Virginia State Day 2013 still has a few spaces available. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Virginia State Day 2013, “An Asian Retreat Teahouse and Gardens,” please email us at: [email protected].

In the Southeast part of Virginia, we are keeping quite busy. In addition to getting ready for the upcoming Virginia State day, we have some projects in the works. Peninsula Heritage Miniature Societywill be working with some local Girl Scouts in March. We are also getting ready to make miniature dog houses (with dog and people treats inside) to send to handlers of the explosive-sniffing dogs that clear IED’s for disposal in Afghanistan. [email protected]

Silver Anniversary Gazette Winter 1997 – The one many of your have asked about! To help celebrate the 25th anniversary of NAME, the Board had produced the first Gazette Houseparty. Many people have asked for a copy of that first Gazette Houseparty. Unfortunately the original disc could not be found. Sheila Benjamin has been able to make an exact reproduction of the houseparty contents in that 1997 issue. The ads have been eliminated. The form to order that first gazette Houseparty is in the newsletter, if you are interested in getting a copy.

… From your Maryland State Rep…

Dear Mini Friends,

Romaine, Olivia and I attended the International Plastic Modelers Show in White Marsh, MD on November, 10, 2012. About two dozen vendors filled a long hallway and a medium sized room. They sold mostly plastic kits, but some were also selling paint, books, decals and other kit related items. Some of us got a little carried away and bought kits of cars from our youth (ah, the memories…) or to incorporate in future scenes (hmmm, another UFO or two). There was a very large exhibit room filled with displays of cars, airplanes, figures, ships, tanks and trucks; some were incorporated into scenes and some free standing. Their work was very well done. Prizes were awarded in numerous categories, including two junior classes. Several NAME members stopped by to support us. Thank you! We also had a dozen or so folks from the show stop by our table, including a family with four young girls. They ogled over our exhibits and took some Miniature Gazettes with them. Maybe we planted a seed for a future miniaturist. The latest Miniature Gazette, Vol. 41, No. 3 (Jan/Feb) is chocked full of good information. Be sure to take a look at the Hallmark Contest on page 1, and the Continuous Membership Drawing on page 12 (a very good reason to keep your membership up to date). But be especially sure to take a look at “A Cart for all Reasons,” the Name Day 2013 event on page 6… and mark your calendars for October 12, 2013. I wondered what kind of project they would think up next, and this one is very cool. It doesn’t look too complicated, and I bet it will be fun to decorate.

On page 10, there is an advertisement for The 2013 National Convention in Tucson Arizona, “At Night in the Museum.” They also have a very cool web site at www.2013TucsonHouseparty.org. The workshops and theme luncheons are on-line in a book form so that you can turn the pages and read about each one. We are just getting so high tech. I just can’t decide if I should print them out anyway so I can FEEL the pages or just read it on-line. I’ll probably print it out later; guess I’m still a little old school. I’m planning and hoping to go to this, my third convention. I love taking classes and learning new techniques. I love the shopping, I love looking at all the exhibits, and I love hanging out with mini people, especially E-1 crowd. I love Tex-Mex food. And I can’t wait to see Helen!!

Until then, have a little fun.

MaryGazette HousepartyLooking for an inexpensive houseparty to attend? The May/June issue of the Miniature Gazette will have everything you need to have your own houseparty, or have some fun with a few friends, or attend a larger get together in Westminster. Committees are just forming. No plans have been made as the Gazette is not out yet, but we are looking for committee members. If you want to join this committee please contact Romaine at [email protected] or 410-917-7033. We welcome everyone from all of E-1 to serve on the committee. I also hope others will develop their own local events……. Romaine Eyler

In Memoriam… Debbie Lynn Schrepfer was born May 9, 1953, in St. Louis, Missouri. She loved miniatures her entire life and began with trading her school lunches for Cracker Jack charms. She continued collecting throughout her life and even had her dad make her a beautiful general store dollhouse.

She went to high school in St. Louis with her future husband, Tom Reitter. She then did her

undergrad studies at Iowa State, and graduated from Oklahoma State University Veterinary School. Her first child,

Breck, came along during her last year of vet school, and Debbie proved her tenacity and strength of character by not only being one of the two female students… but doing it pregnant.

After graduation she chose to stay home and take care of her daughter, although she was always very proud to be a doctor. Her son Russell came along 5 years later. Being a stay-at-home mom, she had time to take her children to miniature shops and classes. Russell's classes were more focused on trains and wiring of course, but Breck's classes included a miniature store front and a child's Noah's Ark bed.

Debbie was active in the miniature community in St. Louis as well as in Maryland, where she moved in 2004. She attended several NAME conventions, including Philadelphia and Nashua, and was often found at local miniature shows. As a founding member of Region E-1's"Mini Moments," she was the one to come up with the name of the club. Although she preferred 1-inch scale, Debbie loved everything small, even pinecones and sea shells. Her favorite event every October was "Trick-or-Treat in Tennessee" in Monteagle, TN, organized by one of her dearest friends, Becky Lipscomb.

Debbie battled colon cancer during the last four years of her life and she did it as she did everything, smiling, laughing and worrying about everyone else. On December 22, 2012, Debbie passed away at home in her sleep surrounded by her family. She will be dearly missed by her husband, Tom, and children Breck and Russell, who will always carry with them a fondness for tiny treasures.

Her Loving Daughter,Breck

Region E-1 lost a very special lady. She will be missed by all of us. ~ Olivia

Come One! Come All!…to the Virginia State Day 2013,

“An Asian Retreat Teahouse & Garden” If you have a friend interested in minis or maybe someone you would like to encourage in having fun with minis, get them to sign up with you for Virginia State Day 2013! The date is April 13, 2013; Registration starts at 8:30 AM; the project is available in both 1” (1:12) or 1/2” (1:24) scales.

You will be putting together a Teahouse that lights, and placing it into an Asian garden that you design. Think it’s too difficult? Think again! All skill levels will have a great time. Lunch is included with your registration. The event will be held at the Hampton Inn & Suites Glenside, Richmond, VA. With the location in the middle of the state, it allows most people to drive to the event and not have to stay in a hotel. However, for those of you that wish to stay at the hotel we have an event rate of $99 (for 2 queens or king) or $109 (Studio) room. When you make your reservations, reference “An Asian Retreat” to receive discounted rates.

There will be Door Prizes, State Day Helpers, and Tote Bag Favors. You ask, “What are State Helpers?” They are miniature items, roomboxes, etc., that are valued at $25 or more. Tickets for them can be purchased and placed in a container for each item. Sometime during the day, a ticket will be drawn from each container. Some lucky person’s ticket will be called. Don’t forget that there will also be door prizes. Door Prizes are miniature items valued at $5 - $10. The anticipation of having your name called and seeing what a fabulous Door Prize you have won is exciting. And let’s not forget the excitement of opening your Tote Bag full of minis!!!

Start looking in the nooks and crannies for miniatures you’re not going to use? Or are you down-sizing? Donate them to Virginia State Day 2013. What a wonderful way to have your minis appreciated by other miniaturists!

If you are not able to attend, you can still be a part of the fun by donating to Door Prizes, State Day Helpers, or Tote Bag Favors. You haven’t registered? …or know someone that hasn’t registered? It may not be too late. Check with the State Rep to see if space is still available. All of the forms are in this issue of the Tiny Tattler and on Region E-1 website.

Virginia State DayDoor Prizes

Like an extra serving of dessert, Door Prizes are a wonderful part of any State Day. Don’t you just love to hear your name or number called and realize that you have won a special treat! It would be wonderful if we receive enough donations for EVERYONE to win a door prize. So, with that in mind, we’d like your help, along with your club members and other miniaturist friends to donate a door prize(s).

The guidelines are simple:1. Door prizes don’t have to be theme related, but they should be miniature or miniature

related.2. The value of each Door Prize should be between $5 and $10.3. Door Prizes should be unwrapped and identified with your name and address.4. Please no “paper printies.” A Door Prize should be something you would be proud to take

home.

Please complete the form below by March 13, 2013, to be recognized in our State Day Program.

Date: Celebrate International Dollhouse and Miniatures Month with NAME Day, on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Expanded events or areas with conflicting dates should occur as close to this date as is reasonably possible, but not after October 31, 2012.

Project: All events will center on the same project: “A Cart for All Reasons.” Plans for the cart will be provided in 1”, 1/2” and 1/4” scale. Some cutters will produce kits for 1/144” scale.

1. This event is for NAME members and NAME clubs only. Non-NAME members should be encouraged and invited to join NAME so they can participate in this event. All efforts should be made to include ALL NAME members in an area. Events could be held locally, statewide, regionally, or online. Clubs might get together with other clubs; smaller groups of individuals in remote areas could meet in someone’s home. Whatever the size of the event, the goal should be to welcome and invite all members. Event sponsors are encouraged to work with their State Representatives and Regional Coordinators to connect with members in their area and for support/assistance in planning their event.

2. Local event committees will determine their theme, accessories, length of the event (one day, mini weekend, etc.), and costs.

3. Insurance is available through the NAME office for events sponsored by a NAME Club and held in public locations in both the US and Canada. The form is available online. Insurance requests must be filed with the NAME office by August 1, 2013.

4. We encourage participation from NAME shop owners and members. If a shop/shop owner is a NAME member, he/she may sponsor a NAME Day event, BUT participation is limited to NAME members only.

5. Fees are to be set locally with all efforts made to keep costs low and reasonable. Because NAME is a non-profit organization, any profit from your event must be used for educational or charitable purposes. Please also remember that we are a part of a national organization and a financial donation to NAME would be appreciated. You could add a few dollars onto your registration fee, plan some type of a fundraiser for NAME (such as selling tickets for donated “helper” prizes), or donate a portion of your event profit to NAME. This is not a requirement, but any donations are always appreciated and help towards NAME’s mission as a non-profit, educational organization.

6. To receive an informational packet and ONE sample cart kit in each scale you plan to offer for your event, please contact Ruth Heisch, 2013 NAME Day event coordinator.

7. To register your event, please contact Ruth Heisch, 2013 NAME Day Event Coordinator at [email protected] … or …

Please provide the following information: Local contact information Event Theme Event Planner Contact Name Dates of event Address Time of event Phone number Location of event Email address Cost of event

8. In order to have your event listed in the July/August NAME Miniature Gazette, your event must be registered with Ruth Heisch, by April 1, 2013. Once your information is received, it will be listed on the NAME website in a timely manner.

9. This event is to be centered on a cart. Individual event sponsors will determine themes. The basic design should be the cart. The project may be enhanced or the size changed, but the project needs to remain close to the cart presented. If you are making changes to the design, please submit to Barbara Thornton-Hill, [email protected], for committee approval.

10. Kit cutters, Regional Teams, and event planners may not sell the cart kits as fundraisers after the event. This is a one-time project, special for the 2013 NAME Day, and is much like a souvenir at a Houseparty or Convention. Since this is a special event, we ask that the kits not be manufactured after October 12, 2013. Kits that are left over may be sold to NAME members.

11. Event sponsors are asked to place their orders with the kit cutter of their choice as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for the production of kits. To ensure delivery in time for your event, the cut-off date for ordering kits is August 15, 2013. Shipping dates for the continental United States will begin September 3, 2013. Shipping dates for AK, HI and internationally will be mutually determined between the event sponsor and kit cutter.

12. Following your event, please send photos and event highlights to Pat Frost, so they may be shared online and in the NAME Miniature Gazette.

2013 Guidelines for NAME DAY Cutters 1. Individuals interested in cutting kits for the 2013 NAME DAY should contact the Cutter Liaison, Susan Koelling, who will provide the plans for the cart in three scales: 1”, 1/2” and 1/4”. This information will be listed on the NAME website and in other NAME Day information that goes out to sponsoring groups, NAME clubs, and individuals. NAME is providing this list as a service to its members. The committee is not endorsing any one person or business. Sponsoring groups are welcome to cut their own kits and should contact Susan to receive the plans.

Liaison for Cutters: Susan Koelling [email protected] 4 Toll Lane Albany, NY 12203-5118 518-669-3349 – Cell Phone – preferred 518-456-3286 – Home

2. Cutters will be asked to confirm NAME membership of the person ordering kits by contacting the Cutter Liaison, Susan Koelling, at the information provided above.

3. Event planners may purchase enough kits for their committee members in advance through their selected kit cutter. This will enable planners to have completed kits to advertise and use for display.

4. Orders for kits from event sponsors, Regional Teams, NAME Clubs, and individual NAME Members may be taken by NAME-listed cutters who are also Sales Room Dealers at the NAME National Convention, and at other NAME-sponsored events and shows. Delivery, distribution or shipping of the kits must occur on or after September 3, 2013, for the continental United States. Orders to AK, HI and international destinations may be shipped earlier to ensure delivery in time for the event.

5. August 15, 2013, is the official cut-off date for orders to ensure delivery in sufficient time for the event; however, individual cutters may use their discretion in determining whether to accept orders after that date. Cutters may also establish an earlier cut-off date.

6. This is a one-time project, special for the 2013 NAME Day, and is much like a souvenir at a Houseparty or Convention. Since this is a special event, we ask that the kits not be manufactured after October 12, 2013. Kits that are left over may be sold to NAME members.

National Convention in E-1 in 2017!!!!There seems to be sufficient interest in region E-1 to support a NAME National Convention in 2017. It will take a lot of work on all our parts to make a successful Convention. The application will be ready to submit to NAME at their February Board meeting. We are looking for hard working, committed NAME members to work on this large project, lots of work, lots of fun. Some of the committee chairs positions have been filled but there is always a committee to serve on, so please volunteer. We want everyone to be able to be involved in this experience to the extent that they want to be involved. To volunteer, please contact Romaine at [email protected] or Olivia at [email protected] . It is not too early to start the planning.

CLUB CORNERMt. Vernon Miniatures Club, Intl. performed a “Triple Threat Maneuver” on the weekend of December 2-3, 2012, by setting up two public miniatures displays and participating in an all-day antique toy fair.  The first miniatures display was set up Saturday morning in the entrance of the John Marshall Library, where we hold our monthly club meetings. After a quick lunch, club members drove to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston, Virginia, where we decorated a large display case in the hotel lobby with holiday-themed miniatures.

As we set up the displays, we drew crowds. Due to popular demand, both venues asked us to extend our exhibits into January. The library staff said people of all ages would stand gazing at the Christmas-themed miniatures. The head librarian said that the small, punched paper snowflakes decorating the exhibit would catch the light and twinkle as she turned off the lights each night. It was all very magical! After setting up the two exhibits on Saturday, club members took a number of vintage miniatures and toys to historic Green Spring Park Farm for an all-day holiday festival. These three events were an intricately planned club project. I don't think anyone had to do a lot of work. We each enjoyed doing what we could. Doing it together was the best part. And this is what makes this a Blue Ribbon Club.

Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts (VME) Donates Dollhouse to Charity

Finished Hofco Farmhouse

The Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts (V.M.E.) Club from Richmond, VA, completed and furnished this beautiful front-opening Hofco Farmhouse. The farmhouse kit is no longer made, but back in the day, Hofco was the gold standard for dollhouse kits.  The dollhouse was donated to V.M.E by club-member Jan Griffith, and was in a partially finished state when the club members started the remodeling project. The doors, windows, and roof were installed but needed repair and painting, and the inside and exterior of the house were unfinished. The V.M.E. members completed the refurbishment with a “Round Robin” approach. One member would take the dollhouse to their home and complete a room or section, then another member would pick it up and transfer the dollhouse to their home and do the same. The frequent transporting of the house was probably the most challenging part of the project, since few members had vehicles large enough to accommodate the size of the dollhouse.

The V.M.E. members were extremely generous with both their time and money. Club President, Carol House, estimates that more than 200 hours were expended by club members in the refurbishment process, and at least $450.00 was donated in materials and furnishings (not including the value of the Hofco house itself). Some of the donated furniture, which is quite collectible, was made by Bespaq and Sonia Messer.

Master Bedroom Living Room

The completed house was donated to PCAV - Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, in memory of club member Elizabeth (Betty) Caprio, who passed away October 17, 2012. The dollhouse was the last miniature project that she worked on, and she was very proud to be a member of such a generous and caring organization. Betty designed and built the front porch for the house and assisted with the painting and installation of the siding and repairing the roof.

Betty Caprio working on the dollhouse

The PCAV will either auction the house or conduct a raffle during their Gala at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in February 2013. Johanna Schuchert, Executive Director of PCAV and the immediate past President of her Board, Brad Neff, attended the December V.M.E. meeting to formally accept the dollhouse. PCAV is grateful for the donation and has high hopes that it will not only raise much needed capitol for the charity, but also bring many years of joy to someone who will cherish it.

VME members: Back Row: Carol House, Pris Parker, Jolly Barth, Leslie Seiler, Jerrie Ferris, Anne Richards, Traci Haden, Jan Griffith, Cindy Lucas, Lois Pyle, Dot Hubbard, & Jim Pyle.

Front Row: Betty Caprio, Nancy Kilby, Kelly Caprio, Shirley Wilson, & Norm Wilson. Not Pictured: Larry & Harriett Garnett, Peggy Wilder, Joe & Pat Wegman.
