Toggling between past and presenthas become a predictable and often an-noying device in historical fiction, espe-cially with “women’s fiction.” The char-acter in the present – in this case,
Heather, a journalist – is tasked withunraveling a mystery, the secrets her be-loved “Nan” took to the grave.
Happily, Robson shines when shewhisks us back to 1947, where Ann and
Miriam squeak out an income amid theprivations of postwar Britain, workingin the exclusive fashion house ofNorman Hartnell, real-life couturier tothe royal family. The two youngembroiderers are cut from very differentbolts of cloth, but they become goodfriends when Miriam moves in as Ann’shousemate.
Miriam, who is French and has cometo England for a fresh start, has secretsof her own: She survived the Holocaust. She is a particularly well-spun charac-ter, who becomes a famous textile artistduring her lifetime.
In 1947, though, Ann and Miriam aremere talented peons on the team taskedwith stitching the intricate, delicate em-broidery on Elizabeth’s wedding gown. All the world would love a glance atHartnell’s top-secret design.
Enter the men in the story, somewonderful ones and one terribly bad ap-ple. Robson has the chops of a very goodmystery writer, and “The Gown” is at itsbest in its darkest (and most moving)moments.
The novelist tries, though, to be allthings to all readers, and of course wemust have a happy, semi-improbable (ifpredictable) romance bud overnightwhen Heather arrives in London to un-lock her grandmother’s past.
I doubt most readers of “The Gown”will mind. After all, didn’t they come fora love story, one that has endured formore than 70 years?

From “The Crown” to … “The Gown.”The British royal family is all the rage
these days, and Queen Elizabeth II re-mains the mother of all matriarchs at asprightly yet stately 92.
But as history lovers and fans of “TheCrown” know, Elizabeth was once ayoung princess bride.
“The Gown” (William Morrow, 371 pp.,eeeE) is subtitled “A Novel of the RoyalWedding,” a clever come-on likely to sellbooks, if a bit of a misleading tease.
The main players in Jennifer Rob-son’s intelligent and intriguing tale arenot the betrothed Elizabeth and Philip, but rather three decidedly non-royalcharacters: Ann Hughes and MiriamDassin in 1947 London, and HeatherMackenzie, Ann’s granddaughter, in2016 Toronto.

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Perhaps themost surreal special moment of theChargers’ improbable season came lastweek, deep in the wild-card victory thatwould secure a shot at the Patriots thisSunday.
In the fourth quarter against the Rav-ens and leading 20-3, Philip Rivers, 37years slow, suddenly took off into openspace. He tottered his way to nine price-less yards, absorbed a tasty hit at theend of the play, then spontaneously un-raveled the move that would launch athousand social media grins.
Rivers rose to his feet, tilted his headto the side, paused statue-like for a mo-ment, then theatrically thrust out hisarm to signify “first down.”
The 15-season veteran is no-non-sense and practical to a fault, prettymuch the last guy you expect to take offand (kind of) sprint and an improbablecandidate for an on-field celebration. Allof which made it all the more wonderful,of course, unless you are a Ravens fan.
In pro football, where the looseningof restrictions on how players respondto big plays has provided gif gold andshifted the No Fun League into the NowFollow League, Rivers’ jab was the cele-bratory version of a dad joke. Hammedup, unashamedly so. Utterly dorky, andcompletely lovable. Predictably the in-ternet adored it, and so did everyoneelse.
And the underlying message? In caseyou hadn’t noticed, Rivers and his barn-
storming Chargers are having fun, andshaping up as smiling assassins in theprocess.
San Di….sorry, L.A., is coming off a12-4 thrill ride of a campaign and poses athreat the five-time champion Patriotsare refusing to take lightly. Tom Brady is7-0 against Rivers but has never facedhis fellow future Hall of Famer in formlike this. Or as relaxed as this. Celebra-tions and all.
“The little 15-year-old boy came outin me,” Rivers said on Wednesday, whenquizzed about his impromptu show-manship. “It was good. It was the firstthing my wife said when I got home, shewas just so happy to see (me) having somuch fun.”
The value of Rivers’ focused but low-key approach to the postseason is notlost on second-year coach AnthonyLynn, who unlocked the puzzle of thesurging Ravens two weeks after losingat home to the same team.
“Guys who haven’t been in this situa-tion, he can help them out,” Lynn said.“He is relaxed. He can slow thingsdown.”
For the second week running theChargers will head to the East Coast fora game that kicks off, according to theirbody clocks at least, at 10 a.m. The anti-dote, says Rivers, is enjoying the proc-ess.
“You have to (have fun),” he added. “Itis a job, an important one. There arefamilies and many people involved, butat the same time … it is a game. That wasimportant for us last week, to not feelthat all of a sudden we have got to play aperfect game, because this is the play-offs. Let’s just play.”
Rivers brings veteran leadership anda steady hand to the camp. His ninthchild is on the way, the oldest of whomwas born when third-string quarterbackCardale Jones was just 9. He dresses incowboy boots and listens to country buthis fellow signal-callers, Jones andGeno Smith, think he’s plenty cool.
“Rivers has swag man,” Smith toldUSA TODAY. “He is the swag master. That celebration? That was one of thecoolest things I’ve ever seen.”
Rivers has miserable memories of thePatriots, and it is in some ways fittingthat if the Chargers are to go a step fur-ther in what has been a golden season
that nearly landed them the No. 1 seed inthe AFC, overcoming New Englandshould be part of the journey.
It all started with a heartbreaking di-visional-round defeat in January 2007,ending a Chargers’ season that hadseemingly unlimited promise after La-Dainian Tomlinson spearheaded a 14-2regular-season record.
A year later came the only other play-off meeting and another unsatisfactoryconclusion. Rivers, playing through atorn ACL, repeatedly took the Chargersdown the field, but not into the endzone, resulting in a 21-12 defeat.
It was a long time ago now, and a lothas changed. Mock the Chargers if youlike for leaving San Diego and parkingtemporarily at Dignity Health SportsPark, a 30,000-seat soccer stadium. Butunderestimate this team, with its exqui-site defense and Rivers’ solid guidance,at your peril.
At a combined age of 78, Brady andRivers will be the oldest pair of startingquarterbacks in playoff history. It will bea rare occasion in which Rivers is thecomparative youngster, four years shyof Brady in both age and NFL longevity.
“It doesn’t happen so much anymorewhere I’m the young one,” he said.
Maybe it is appropriate then that Riv-ers, invigorated by the Chargers’ returnto significance after years in the dol-drums, has the vibe and enthusiasm of arookie as one of his long career’s great-est opportunities approaches.
“If it becomes not fun,” he said, paus-ing for a moment with a beaming smile,“then we’re in the wrong deal.”

FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys runningback Ezekiel Elliott sees him.
“Big 9-9 in the middle,” he said ofAaron Donald (and referencing his jer-sey number) when asked Tuesday.“Could be one of the most disruptive de-fensive players in this league. He’s a guyyou’ve got to game plan around, guywho has a lot of production. He’s a spe-cial player.”
Shutting down the Rams’ all-pro de-fensive tackle will be key as the Cow-boys chase an upset Saturday night inthe NFC divisional round.
Donald led the league with 201⁄2 sacksthis season, 41⁄2 more than the runner-up, the Texans’ J.J. Watt. Donald regis-tered three consecutive multi-sackgames while anchoring a unit that wonplus-11 in the turnover battle. Sincecoach Sean McVay and defensive coor-dinator Wade Phillips joined Donald in2017, the Rams are 18-0 in games whenhe has a sack.
Consider a Cowboys team that al-lowed 56 sacks in the regular season(second worst) warned.
“He’s a combination really of every-thing that’s good in a defensive tackle,”said all-pro right guard Zack Martin, who has played against Donald sincecollege. (Martin went to Notre Dameand Donald attended Pittsburgh.)
“A lot of times when you play a defen-sive tackle, they’re really strong but maynot be as quick. He’s pretty much every-thing.”
Donald will face a quarterback inPrescott who has won 16 of 19 games(postseason included) when taking zeroor one sacks. The Cowboys are closer to.500 at 17-14 when Prescott is sacked atleast twice.
One of those defeats came in 2017 tothe Rams, a two-sack game Dallas lost35-30. Donald had two quarterback hits
in 59 snaps but no sacks as Prescottspun out of a neck hold on 3rd-and-7 tocomplete an 18-yard pass to Dez Bryant.
“It’s picking and choosing our spots... where we can apply pressure and ac-tivate things that put pressure,” McVaysaid of the pass rush in a conference callwith Dallas reporters. “Dak’s a toughguy to bring down.”
But Donald, fellow tackle Ndamu-kong Suh, outside linebacker DanteFowler Jr. and defensive end MichaelBrockers are among those who will try.
Pro Football Focus ranked the unit thirdbest among defensive front sevens thisseason (after the Eagles and Jaguars). ACowboys’ offensive line that struggledwith consistency dropped from fourthto 14th in a year.
The Cowboys’ best bet?Capitalize on a leaky run D.The Rams’ 122.3 rushing yards per
game this season ranked 23rd. Their 5.1yards per carry allowed ranked deadlast.
“Teams that have been successfulhave done the little things right, execut-ed, hit some big runs against them,”Martin said.
“At the same time, you can’t look atthat stat and think it’s going to be easysledding running the ball.”
Elliott, the league’s rushing champi-on with 1,434 yards, averaged 4.7 yardsper carry. He rushed for 95.6 per game, averaging 125 total yards from scrim-mage while also lead blocking on keyplays such as red-zone quarterbackdraws for Prescott. Those run-pass op-tions will factor into the Cowboys’ gameplan.
But Dallas can’t rely on the Rams torun to victory, Elliott said.
“The regular season is over,” Elliottsaid. “This is playoff football. I think allthat stuff gets thrown out the windowonce we get out there.
“Everyone is going to be playing hard.Everyone is going to be playing to win.”
