Holidays are a time for counting our blessings. We all know that. It’s a nice saying. But in the hectic holidays, do we really do it? Maintaining an attitude of gratitude should be on those holiday lists that we make and check twice. When I was a little kid, my grandmother made the counting of blessings a literal holiday tradition. She’d draw Kuliouou neighborhood children to her kitchen with freshly baked cookies and strawberry milk and ask them what they had to be thankful for. Wewerearascallot, andthefirstreactionwas usually a shrug or a joke or what my grand-mother, a teacher, dismissed as a “smartypants” comment.

But before the last cookie was eaten, every childhadusedupallofhisorherfingersandtoes in counting blessings. Simpleblessingslikefreshair,findingthebest-ever pet at the pound, the way their mom squeezed their hand when they were nervous, acing a test in school, not having to share a room with their pesky brother. And they went away feeling full—of cookies and gratitude. AtPBSHawaii,we’verunoutoffingersandtoes counting all of the new friends made in the course of problem-solving to develop Hiki N -o, thenation’sfirststatewidestudentnewsnetwork, on-air and online, launching in February.

Our team reached out to people we didn’t know and found individuals and businesses willing to commit time and resources. It was such a gift to be able to brain-stormwithstrangersindifferentfields—education, broadband, journalism, phi-lanthropy. They didn’t stay strangers for long. They became close allies in doing something new and different to advance 21st-century learning skills for Hawaii students. Good friends, both new and longtime, are among the blessings for which your

team at PBS Hawaii is feeling profoundly grateful this holiday season. Thank you with all of our heart, for making it possible for PBS Hawaii to cel-ebrate this 10th-anniversary as a viewer-supportednonprofitorganization.Andmahalo for helping build momentum for a better future for education and commu-nity journalism. Toasting you with strawberry milk and wishing you the happiest of holidays…

Hiki N -o Gets Going UPDATE

Did you notice a younger than usual news crew filming in your community recently? You probably spotted students participating in Hiki N -o, Hawaii’s first statewide student news network.

Across the state, middle and high school students in 55 public, private and charter schools are working on their news stories for the first season of Hiki N -o, which will premiere its first show on PBS Hawaii on February 28, 2011.

They’ve begun conducting interviews and shooting video for news stories that will take viewers into their schools and communities. They’re tackling issues of concern to today’s youth — like development and sustainability and how it’s changing their neighborhoods. They’ll introduce us to ordinary people transforming the lives of others in extraordinary ways.

On Lanai, high school students are scouting locations that will be the setting for a Hiki N -o show they’ll anchor next spring. On the Big Island, Konawaena High School students are learning, by doing, how to master shooting with natural sound to give the story they want to tell authenticity. At Nanakuli High and Intermediate, Performing Arts/Media teacher Robin Kitsu reports, “The students are enjoying the fact that they are creating something that the whole state will be able to see and that this project is ‘real’.”

Along the way to producing this first — a half-hour fact-based news show by students – youth are developing skills through media and journalism that will help them succeed in the 21st century. And through the diverse mix of stories they tell, Hiki N -o will connect and inform viewers across Hawaii.

Since 1993, Cirque du Soleil has produced seven original, permanent shows in Las Vegas, creating a garden of delights that has trans-formed the very nature of entertainment in this desert oasis. Now the artistic universe of Cirque du Soleil is captured in a new perfor-mance special, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: FLOWERS IN THE DESERT, an extraordinary entertainment experience as part of special pledge program-ming on PBS Hawaii. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: FLOWERS IN THE DESERT presents mesmerizing performances, recorded in high definition, of Mystère™, O™, KÀ™, LOVE™, and their latest production, Viva ELVIS™ , as well as sneak peeks of Zuman-ity™ and CRISS ANGEL® Believe™ . Behind the scenes interviews and backstage footage allow the viewers to explore the creative process behind the performances. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: FLOWERS IN THE DESERT explores a garden of exotic flowers

growing in the Nevada desert. Flowers open to reveal rich, imaginative worlds within, and as we enter one of these worlds, a Cirque show begins. This transformation provides our entry into and exit from the different worlds created by Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas. From the 20 or so performers the company featured when it all began in 1984, Quebec-based Cirque du Soleil has become a leading provider of quality entertainment with more than 5,000 employees, including 1,200 artists who hail from some 50 different countries. Cirque du Soleil has brought wonder and delight to more than 100 million spectators in over 300 cities on five continents. In 2010, Cirque du Soleil will be presenting 20 shows simultaneously throughout the world. Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters are based in Montreal, Canada.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, starring the world-famous Rockettes, has become America’s number-one holiday show over its storied 77-year history. This multifaceted show includes dynamic Rockette performances that showcase the dancers’ signature precision dance style. Traditional fan favorites such as the “Living Nativity” scene and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” which have been in the show since its inception in 1933, remain a vital part of the show’s core. Originally performed as a holiday “gift” between movie screenings, the Christmas Spectacular has long since become the main event, drawing millions of people annually to stage productions across the country.

“45365” is a vérité exploration of the congruities of daily life in an American town. From the patrol car to the court-room, the playground to the nursing home, it explores relationships and interactions with and between people and their community. The stories of a father and son, a young relationship, cops and criminals, officials and their electorate coalesce into a mosaic of faces, places, and events. “45365” is a portrait of a city and its people.

tradition in the visual arts, music, literature, dance, theater and beyond. The epicenter of this storm was Paris, France. PARIS THE LUMINOUS YEARS tells the story of Paris from an unprecedented point of view, not as the familiar, glamorous backdrop for the revolutions that exploded there, but as active protagonist, catalyst and midwife to modernity. The film spotlights now- famous key figures in the art world’s first international avant-garde, including Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Igor

Stravinsky, Ernest Hemingway, Serge Diaghilev, Jean Cocteau, Gertrude Stein, Aaron Copland, Josephine Baker, Marcel Duchamp, Langston Hughes, Sylvia Beach, Janet Flanner and many more, as they recount their individual stories of why they came to Paris, whom they met, what they made there, and how being in Paris transformed them and their work.11:00 Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox Maile Meyer (e)(HD)11:30 Leahey & Leahey (e)

INDEPENDENT LENS “The Calling” TWO-PART SERIES | DECEMBER 20 & 21 | 9PM

It takes a true calling to make faith a way of life. The Calling follows seven dedicated young people on a dramatic journey as they prepare to become professional clergy. Embarking on life paths that demand tremendous personal sacrifice and commitment, these seminarians must uphold timeless truths in an era that values quick fixes and hot trends, and face a public that challenges the very relevance of their mission. The Calling follows its subjects from their first days of train-ing, through years of study, and into their early practice as religious leaders. We see them within and beyond the walls of school, wrestling with the sacrifices they’ve made to pursue this path.

planet? To gather crucial evidence, NOVA follows an ambitious Antarctic investigation — a state-of-the-art drilling probe known as ANDRILL. Drilling deep beneath the Antarctic ice, down through the sea and three-fourths of a mile into the seafloor, ANDRILL recovers rock cores that reveal intimate details of climate and fauna from a time in the distant past when the Earth was just a few degrees warmer than it is today. As researchers grapple with the harshest conditions on the planet, they discover astonishing new clues — not only about Antarctica’s past, but also Earth’s future.9:00 Frontline Flying Cheap In this re- broadcast, FRONTLINE investigates last year’s deadly crash of Continental 3407 outside Buffalo, NY, and discovers a dramatically changed airline industry, where regional carriers now account for half of the nation’s daily departures. LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX Patti LyonsDECEMBER 28 | 7:30PM

Patti Lyons has been showered with awards this year – recognizing her nearly half-century of devotion to her work in child welfare. But this social worker’s tireless efforts to protect Hawaii’s abused and neglected children weren’t always appreciated. Lyons spent decades battling an intransigent state bureaucracy while working directly with countless families to prevent abuse. Her persistence paid off and Lyons’ lasting achievements include helping to establish Child Protective Services, Hawaii Healthy Start and the Consuelo Foundation which serves children in Hawaii and the Philippines.
