TION

With the holidays in full swing, the city of Phoenix is in store for what is truly the rarest of entertainment productions indeed. Bundles and bundles of dazzling, high-flying, larger than life cheer are just around the bend, as Dralion™ a signature of Cirque du Soleil® soars into US Airways Center November 28th – December 2nd 2012.

Fusing the 3000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion™ draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West.

In Dralion™ the four elements that govern the natural order take on a human form. Thus embodied, each element is represented by its own evocative color: air is blue; water is green; fire is red; earth is ochre. In the world of Dralion™, cultures blend, Man and Nature are one, and balance is achieved. Directed by Guy Caron, Dralion™ is a signature Cirque du Soleil® production acclaimed by more than seven million people worldwide since it premiered in 1999 in Montreal, Canada. After many years performing under the big top, Dralion™ will now be presented in arenas throughout the

United States and Canada with the same quality performance. Bearing the unmistakable signature of Cirque du Soleil and featuring 50 international acrobats, gymnasts, musicians and singers, Dralion™ soars to new heights as it defies the laws of nature. Just a few of the jaw-dropping, hair-raising acts you’ll enjoy include:

Aerial Hoop

An awe-inspiring creation of strength and agility, this exotic aerial ballet captures the passion and energy of its signature element, fire. Suspended from a hoop high above the stage, the artist presents an evocative choreography in which the hoop and body become one in a dance of acrobatic precision.

Aerial Pas De Deux

Pas de deux is a languorous aerial dance. An intertwined couple

flies over the stage in along band of blue

cloth. Within the cloth, they

perform various acrobatic figures that demand great

feats of strength and

flexibility.

Bamboo Poles

In Bamboo Poles, six men balance long decorative poles symbolizing fire. A traditional act of the Chinese acrobatic arts, the performers keep the poles ‘in flight’ overhead while performingacrobatic feats on the ground.

Dralions

A blend of the traditional Chinese dragon and lion dances takes on new scope when re-imagined by Cirque du Soleil. In a dynamic and energetic tumbling sequence, the artists perform acrobatic moves while balancing on large wooden balls as the Dralion™ characters surround them with a spirited dance.

Hand Balancing

This act requires great strength and flexibility. Displaying impressive control, the artist balances on canes of various heights, slowly executing a series of astounding figures while maintaining a delicate equilibrium.

Hoop Diving

Derived from Chinese acrobatic tradition, the Hoop Diving act takes on a tribal flavor from the African-influenced music to which it is performed. Ten male artists dive and throw themselves like arrows through small wooden hoops. The hoops are stacked on top of each other; some are stationary while others rotate.

Juggling, Medusa, Skipping Ropes, Trampoline, Chairs, Diablo… the

list goes on and on! Alongside astonishing music and set design,

dazzling costumes and larger than life characters,

Dralion™ soars to new heights in live entertainment. A must-see production in more ways than one, mark your calendars big and bold to bare witness one of the rarest of spectacles your mind could ever imagine.

Tickets starting at $40 are available now at www.cirquedusoleil.com. Tickets are also on sale at the box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, www.ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000.

The streets of London have been enveloped by a plague, that’s transformed the population into bloodthirsty zombies. As one of the survivors, you must use your wits and your weapons to defend yourself from the undead menace and keep the human race alive. The Wii U plays an important role in “ZombiU” as you use the game pad to change inventory, scan your surroundings and manipulate locks. The motion controls can also be used to aid in sniping at a distance and performing finishing moves and gruesome kills.

It was only a matter of time until the Wii U found its first zombie game, and Ubisoft delivered early with a creepy shooter that incorporates many of the features from the new console and plenty of scares for horror fans.

THE ASSAD BROTHERSSaturday, November 17th at 7pm

Brazilian-born brothers Sergio and Odair Assad have set the benchmark for all other guitarists by creating a new standard of guitar innovation, ingenuity, and expression. Their exceptional artistry and uncanny ensemble playing come both from a family rich in Brazilian musical tradition and from studies with the best guitarists in South America. Their virtuosity has inspired a wide range of composers to write for them, from Astor Piazzolla and Terry Riley to Marlos Nobre and Edino Krieger. The brothers have also worked extensively with such renowned artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Paquito D’Rivera, Gidon Kremer, and Dawn Upshaw.

They have been touted as “the best two-guitar team in existence, maybe even in history” by the Washington Post, while the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had this to say. “The Assads’ virtuosity left the many guitarists in the crowd, simply awe-struck. Their speed, gorgeous tone, ease reaching over the body of the guitar to its extreme high range, uncanny musical memories (not a page of music appeared on the stage), and their ability to play thousands of notes without a single clinker, click or buzz are the stuff of guitar gods.”

Learn more about the talented pair at www.assadbrothers.com. Tickets: $42.50–$52.50. Please visit www.themim.org for more information.

Reviewers’ RoundtableThe following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Lincoln’Daniel Day-Lewis plays President Abraham Lincoln who, in a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. (PG-13 – 160 minutes)

Stan: When an actor’s persona is lost and the character he or she is portraying comes to life, one is immersed in the story. Steven Spielberg directs Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln to deliver an award-caliber winning performance of a historical figure that is one the most quoted persons in American history. Most intriguing for me are exchanges on the ‘floor’ by representatives from the various states as they state their pro and con views on the now law of the 13th Amendment. With a stellar cast of veteran actors, standouts include Sally Fields, David Strathairn, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Jackie Earle Haley, Bruce McGill, Tim Blake Nelson, and Joseph Cross, who together are an ensemble wonder portraying notable historical persons with conviction and passion,

taking the viewer on a journey back through time. (Grade: B+)

Joseph: Even those who were disappointed with director Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” last year will be taken completely by surprise at the absolute atrocity that is “Lincoln.” At times, the new drama – which focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office – is drier than the Sahara Desert. Other times, it is massively melodramatic, resembling an amateur stage production. Either way, it is beyond boring, consisting of copious, long-winded conversations spoken with such monotony that they make the idea of reading your old high school history text book seem like a trip to Disney World by comparison. (Grade: F)

UltraStar Exclusive: ‘The Loneliest Planet’*Gael García Bernal and Hani Furstenberg play an engaged couple whose backpacking trip in the Caucasus Mountains is derailed by a single misstep that threatens to undo everything the pair believed about each other and about themselves. (NR – 113 minutes)

*Not made available for review.

‘La Rafle’On July 16, 1942, Adolf Hitler demands that the French government round up

its Jews and put them on trains for the extermination camps in the East. The collaborators start to put the plan into effect and, within a short time, 13,000 of Paris’s Jews – among them 4,000 children – are rounded up and sent on a road with no return. (NR – 119 minutes)

Joseph: Writer/director Rose Bosch must have done an awful lot of research into the Holocaust for her movie “La Rafle.” She should have also done some research into narrative filmmaking, though, as the new French-language flick plays out more like a straightforward history lesson than it does a motion picture with any entertainment value whatsoever. That is to say that Bosch wastes the talent of stars Jean Reno and Mélanie Laurent by failing to develop her characters and instead using a prosaic paint-by-numbers approach to the story. Moreover, one can get the same sort of sentimentality by reading a non-fiction novel on the topic. (Grade: F)

‘A Royal Affair’Alicia Vikander plays a young queen who, married to mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), falls secretly in love with her physician (Mads Mikkelsen). Together, they start a revolution that changes a nation forever. (R – 137 minutes)

Stan: With drama and intrigue at its finest, director/writerNikolaj Arcelpresents the 18th century story

of them is diagnosed with a terminal illness, the repercussions hit the group deeper than they could imagine. Imogen Poots plays a talented violinist who decides to act on her desires.

“The company on this was just extraordinary and it was a gift to take part in it. The film’s rehearsal process was so organic. I observed and was being as much of a human sponge as possible because just watching these guys at play and the generosity they just give up to you as actors was something very special. I really look to it as one of the greatest experiences that I have ever had making a film because it was rich with so many different elements. And those actors in general just really blew my mind.

“It was such a short period of time. We all had to really knuckle down and get as good as possible with the instruments. Because of the schedule, it was moving quite fast and there was quite a steep learning curve. But it was still very enjoyable – and essential, really, in terms of the foundation of the characters. I wanted the instrument to be an innate quality within [my character] – like an extension of herself, an extra limb or something. But it was a real gift and a very rewarding process to have the opportunity to learn that.

“[My character] is a pretty insatiable character. She is not afraid of her own actions and her own opinions, which is a slight sense of her immaturity. She is kind of seeking sophistication but shooting herself in the foot in many ways by worsening the situation for everybody else. She is seeking fulfillment and contracting that by throwing it away again. I think her position is very interesting because of how remarkable her parents are in terms of their talent and their ability with the instruments. It must be kind of wild when you are going down the same path of the professions that your parents are in because you question whether you are doing it to please them or for your own identity. I think that is one of the questions that [my character] is asking herself.” – Imogen Poots

Actresses Maggie Grace and Mía Maestro(‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2’)By Stan Robinson

On the question of ‘Method Acting’ (which can include drawing on their own emotions and memories to bring about life-like performances) vs. ‘Classical Acting’ (the emotions of a character are often times simulated through more

physical means).

Maggie: “It certainly depends on the film if I stay in character throughout a shoot day. This film was a lot of fun to make; everyone around the set was enjoying the different types of character personalities there. I play an incredibly stylized, larger than life vampire, and this character is so compelling with a lot of signature nuances and plenty of room to explore.

“I think that whole thing [Method and in-character all day] got blown out of proportion and was never method acting! I think it got the wrong reputation; I’ve never met an actor that demanded such an extreme to deliver a character.”

Mía: “If you’re doing a movie like ‘Twilight’, the type of preparation is very different. It was 25 new actors so part of our job was getting along with everyone…Maggie cuts in with: “Summer camp on steroids [with a chuckle], and its like a big family because that’s what usually ends up happening in the movie when the vampires come together to help Bella and Edward save their daughter’s life!

Mía: The ‘Twilight’ films are pretty loyal to the books, there’s one change that the screenwriter and the author of the novels, Stephanie Meyers, collaborated on which I think will really surprise and delight the fans! Its one diversion from the book but the films are very loyal to the material because obviously there’s a very loyal fan base there and they (fans) want to see that the books that they love come to life in a way that they recognize!”

Maggie: “Yes, and I think that every time you are doing a novel or a short story, especially something that has been so well read all over the world, you just want to be as faithful as you can. Bill Condon being such a wonderful director has done such a beautiful job to Stephanie’s material and his own esthetics as a director, and has such a wonderful way with actors! We had a screening the other day for the actors and to me, it’s ‘The Best’ film of the ‘Twilight’ saga!”

Mía: ‘By far, he (director Bill Condon) did such a beautiful job, it’s so exciting with so much action and such a different mood to ‘Breaking Dawn’ and really a fun film to watch!” –Maggie Grace and Mía Maestro

Writer/Director Nikolaj Arcel (‘A Royal Affair’)By Stan Robinson

“’A Royal Affair’ had been ‘cooking’ for a long time because for Danish people it’s a very famous story! It’s one of the big ‘Holy Grails’ of films that has never been done. It’s obviously a true story, and a very important piece of Danish history. I had always thought about why nobody had done a film about it, and then at one point I simply had the time to sit down and start reading all the books about the subject, and doing the research became so fascinated I was hooked and couldn’t let go! There was no turning back and I spent about year writing the script.

“Good point Stan, as a writer it is very liberating to just deliver a script to another director, especially if you trust that director. I like that and still do that, and often I write for other directors. But there’s something special about directing something that you’ve also written because you at least get to visualize, you get to actually go out and actually experience all those things that you have written down which is nice, and its not even so much a question of control as it is to try to follow through, we got this on page, now let me see if I can honor the script.

“The key challenge with telling the story is to balance the budget with the ambition! We had a great deal of ambition, and we planned every single

Sshot, I storyboarded a lot and planned it very thoroughly because you have sort of a Danish kind of budget and you just can’t make stuff up as you go along, you have to know exactly what kind of shots you need, what you really want. That was one of the big challenges to be very precise and also for the actors I think it was trying to figure out how to embody persons from the 18th century for a period film.

“‘A Royal Affair’ is a beautiful love story, forbidden love, and a queen who falls in love with the king’s doctor which was lethal, and at the same time its about a doctor who gains power at the court and tries to change the entire nation for the better, which was also a big thing back then so it has a little bit of everything. It has politics, it has drama, it’s a love story, and it even has a crazy king as the ‘joker’ of the film and these elements make it quite universal!” – Nikolaj Arcel

Bonus FeaturesThe following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf movies recently released to Blu-ray and DVD or video-on-demand.

Associate Producer Mary Alice Drumm (‘Brave’)By Joseph J. Airdo

In “Brave,”Kelly Macdonald voices a princess who, determined to make her own path in life, defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, the princess must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. Phoenix native Mary Alice Drumm served as an associate producer on the film.

“I have learned a lot of patience. Pixar really takes their time, considering what everyone thinks about a story. There is a real emphasis here on building consensus. Personally, that has been such a great lesson. Sometimes you can feel an urgency to get to a decision but it is not always the right decision. One thing that I have learned here is to take the time to talk to people. And to be inclusive – talk to everyone that is involved because sometimes you end up at a different decision that you did not even think about. That has been something that has helped me not only here but in life as well.” – Mary Alice Drumm

RAVING FLASH REPORTThe Casino’s obsession with card counters

By Guest Contributor Eliot Jacobson, Ph.D., Jacobson Gaming, LLC and Raving Partner, Table Games Operations

and Casino Math Analysis

This obsession to protect against Blackjack card counters costs far more than card counters will ever win.

The methods casinos use to protect against blackjack card counters are among the most costly managerial decisions many casinos make. Contrary to popular belief, there is not an army of card counters waiting to pounce at the first opportunity. In this day of multiple table game options and hundreds of casinos, the few skilled advantage players (APs) who do target blackjack are highly unlikely to harm a specific casino’s bottom line. The poorly understood policies put in place cost far more than the casino stands to lose to the few counters who do stop by. One of the most wasteful procedures is the placement of the cut card in shoe games.

There are several variables that go in to determining the cost associated with the cut card. Among these are shuffle time, game pace, number of players and house edge. The deeper the cut card is placed towards the end of the shoe, the more rounds will be dealt per shoe. The effect of this will be to reduce the number of time-consuming shuffles. Even if a batch shuffler is used, there can be significant time savings.

For example, consider a shuffle time of 180 seconds (three minutes),

an average of $50 wagered per round, an effective house edge of 1.50%, with three players at the table. Assume the game is moving at a pace of 90 rounds per hour (a typical pace for three players). Then the yearly cost of cutting off two decks instead of 1/2 deck is $78,321 per table.

What are the chances that card counters are going to beat that table out of that amount? If the casino has an average of six tables open, the cost is over $450,000 per year. In the highly unlikely event that card counters beat the casino for $50,000, the casino is still ahead by over $400,000.

The obsession with protecting blackjack against card counters costs far more than card counters will ever win. Casinos should use a fraction of the profit they will gain by placing the cut card between one half (1/2) and one (1) deck and invest in education for their staff. Bring in an expert to train staff on card counting. Along the way, staff can be educated on a host of far more costly forms of advantage play. The light of game protection is focused on card counters, while the real action is taking place at the dimly lit table one over. For more information; Contact Amy Hergenrother at [email protected]

30 Wines for $30

Wine and.... Football?By Jennifer Manly, ArizonaVinesAndWines.com

You read it correctly. I didn’t mean football and beer, which is what most people would say is the perfect pairing; I did indeed mean wine and football. I know it doesn’t quite sound accurate, but wine is becoming the new drink of choice on those Sunday game days. (As well as Monday, Thursday, and Saturday if you’re a huge football fan)

I admit, over the last few years I have become a big football fan, maybe even too much.. if there is a such thing. I believe Sunday is meant for watching games all day long, while screaming at the television. I think it’s a day of friends, tailgating, food, drinking, jerseys and fun. However, I may be a football fan, but I am definitely not a beer fan. Not only am I not a fan of the flavor of beer, but I also can’t drink it because of the

gluten it contains. I also know I am not the only one who feels this way or is restricted.

Now there are certainly different beverages that can take the place of beer, but wine actually does work for many reasons! Think of the food and how well wine pairs with those brats or steaks or burgers! What about the appetizers served.. cheese and dips, wings and ribs. Let’s also not forget the pizza.. red wine and pizza, perfect! What about sparkling wine throughout the day to celebrate when your team scores that crazy touchdown. Never thought of that did you? Let’s not forget it will also help to clear your palate, which is an added plus. Another plus, the alcohol content. Fact is wine has more alcohol than beer, and a lot of people will find that very appealing. Lastly, for all my fellow girls out there that are football fans, having wine while watching the game can still make you feel girly, instead of like you’re hanging with a bunch of burly men!

So next time you’re watching our AZ Cardinals, grab some bottles of wine and watch the party really start!

WINE CLUBS By Marlene P. Baumann

There are numerous ways to experiment with different wines and to build your wine collection and wine clubs are one of the most over-looked, yet

highly enjoyable avenues available.

Wine clubs come in many different varieties. For example, a winery-direct club is one where they periodically send you selections from their winery. Wine retailer clubs are usually national wine retailers who have deep wine inventories. In these clubs, you may be able join a club with a theme such as Italian wines, white wines only, or big styled wines like cabernets. In other wine clubs, an expert staff member hand-selects an assortment for your monthly shipment as a member in their club.

How do wine clubs work? Simply put, you sign up for a subscription and the club agrees to ship to you wine at regular intervals, usually monthly. A quick internet search will yield a wide-range of wine clubs and surely you will find one that meets your needs in the areas of quality, variety and budget. The most critical traits in choosing a wine club are customer service and the quality of the wine selections that you end up with. You are putting your wine choices into their hands – so they’d better be talented!

I’ve been a member of many wine clubs over the years. One of the most gratifying was through a California winery. I always admired whoever the staff member was that made the choices for the monthly shipment. They were so creative and had a nice “wow” factor that pleasantly surprised me. I never knew what I was going to get, but it was always distinctive. One month itwould be magnums, the next month an assortment of half bottles, after that, older vintages, and on and on. I loved hosting dinner parties around these wines and sharing them with friends. As I write this, I can’t even remember why I’m not a member anymore.

Some might think it is a big financial commitment to join a wine club, but they exist in many price ranges. The benefit is convenience, high quality and something interesting. If it’s not, you won’t be signing up again. Just look for proven customer service, outstanding selections, excellent prices and discounts for members, I think you’ll be pleased!

Celebration of the Arizona Wine GrowersBy Tim Hilcove, www.weeklywinejournal.com

By now everyone has heard of the big wine festival being held in Phoenix on November 17 (Festival at the Farm) but have you heard of the “Celebration of the Arizona Wine Growers”? This is the Arizona wine event of the year as far as I’m concerned. I’ve attended the last two years in a row and they’ve been nothing short of completely amazing. Here’s what you can expect: Meet and mingle with the top wine maker’s from across the state. Experience each award-winning wine, paired with 5 Star dining by Quiessence Executive Chef, Greg LaPrad. (Take a look online at the awards Quiessence has won over the years and Chef LaPrad’s credentials).

Let’s also not forget to add the opportunity to hang with arock star wine maker like Eric Glomski from Page Spring Cellars and a legend like Kent Callaghan from Callaghan Vineyards. This alone is easily worth the $75 ticket price.

There is only enough room for 150 people, and many of them will be the actual wine makers so if you haven’t already, and it isn’t already sold out get your tickets online at www.arizonawine.org. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on this event!

CALENDAR OF EVENTS 11/15

There are hundreds of quotes such as these, all of seemingly equal gravity, passion, and occasionally, comedy. Wine is the exalted beverage. Humanity has ogled over wine since its dawning. It’s gotten more press time than Lindsay Lohan on a Kombucha bender. It’s inspired countless…eh, you get the idea.

But really, ask any winemaker or serious wine drinker about the properties of wine and you will get anything from poetic waxing to far-out metaphors. And maybe that is a property of wine: it has the effect of affecting. We all know archetypal

belligerence—overly affectionate, totally depressed, bat-stuff crazy. But turn this down a few notches, and it’s not hard to understand why some become so enraptured while under its spell. Its subtleties speak loudly when given a forum. Wine becomes the poem and you the painter. Opinions begin as color-by-number and then infinitely move toward the abstract.

Responsible wine use brings out the inner artist, amplifying innate potentials. It’s our job to take that message from the bottle and integrate it.

BEER! The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com

PRIVATE LABEL BEERSHave you ever wandered into Joe’s Bar and said, “Hey, look! There’s a handle that says Joe’s on it. How cool, Joe is making his own beer?” Of course Joe really isn’t making his own beer, Joe is buying a keg of beer from somebody that has allowed them to private label it as exclusive for Joe’s. This is a trend that cycles around every once in a while and it

has been rearing its ugly head lately. Now don’t get me wrong, some of these beers are fine beers, it’s just the concept that annoys me.

The basic idea is that a bar owner, either through vanity or some belief that it will create brand loyalty, decides to go to a brewery and allow them to put his name on one of their beers and sell it under a private label. Now on the surface this seems like a good idea because if you can get them hooked on Joe’s Pale Ale then they will have to come to Joe’s to get the pale ale. The problem is that it isn’t Joe’s Pale Ale, its ABC Brewery’s pale ale and they sell their pale ale in a bunch of other places. Given that the law requires the brewery to be listed on the tap handle, it doesn’t take too much time to figure out that the bar down the street is serving the same

pale ale as Joe. Because Joe still has to buy his pale ale it is the same price as ABC Brewery Pale is everywhere else.

There are also private label bottles and cans although you mostly see them at the larger chain stores since minimum purchase commitments are very high. The idea behind these brands is somewhat the same as Joe’s except they have the added advantage of being able to keep the price lower than the competition. This is because they are able to buy in such large quantity and cut their own deals with large breweries. In theory, once again, this makes sense since many grocery shopper buyers are price driven. Except when it comes to items that have a good bit of brand loyalty…like beer. A Coors or Corona drinker will drink that brand

almost every time, and are willing to pay a couple of bucks more for doing so. Studies have shown that 41% of people that purchase beer feel that it is a must have brand for them. The highest ranking category for brand loyalty is pet food at 49%.

The interesting thing is that craft drinkers have it both ways, and either way hurts our friend Joe from the first two paragraphs. Many craft drinkers are loyal to a handful of breweries and if they don’t immediately realize that Joe’s is made by one of their faves, they may never even try it. And they certainly won’t be able to order it at another bar. The other side of that coin is that craft drinkers tend to be experimental and show more style loyalty than individual brand loyalty.

LUCKY BREAK BY “KING” JAMES SWANN

A great place for Craft Beer and Food!

Hello again friends and fellow craft beer drinkers, this month let’s take a break from beer reviews to take a look at some of the best new places in town to enjoy our favorite frosty beverages and a bite to eat as well. Let’s begin with Lucky Break in Tempe. Opened now for about a year on the South East corner of McClintock and Baseline, Lucky Break features twenty four beers ON TAP including many locals and a lot of craft options. As you might have guessed by the name, there are also six tournament size pool tables and twenty four huge flat screen tele’s making this a great place to catch your favorite football game on the weekend.

On my last visit, there were eight local brews available including Kiltlifter, Oak Creek Nut Brown Ale, Papago Orange Blossom, Lumberyard Raspberry, Apache Trout Stout, Red Rover Irish Red and a seasonal selection. Craft options included selections from Firestone Walker, Odell, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas and Deschutes. Not too shabby!

There are food specials every day including Burger Monday, Taco Tuesday and Wing Wednesday and all for just $5. Fish Fry Friday is a nice option as well at only $7.95. My favorite part of the menu was the Slider Board with eight different choices including Jerk Chicken, Green Chili Chicken, Spam and Chicken Salad to name just a few. I was also surprised to see a few old favorites, including the classic club sandwich, a huge molten grilled cheese sandwich and a burger with bacon, brie cheese and mushrooms. Anyone hungry? This isn’t your everyday pub fare!

As always keep sending those comments and questions to [email protected] and thanks to Brian M. for the idea to spend some time focused on the newest places in town. Until next week, Cheers!

For example, an IPA drinker is going to try whatever IPA he sees, if it looks interesting, but is also not going to order that IPA exclusively. The style drinker will cycle through various beers of his or her favorite styles at several bars; and while Joe’s may get a shot on a visit to Joe’s bar, it may never pop back up in the rotation since this drinker tends to rotate through bars as well.

There are some bars that do well with private labeling. For the most part these are bars that have really gone out of their way to promote their label and make it truly identifiable with the overall brand of their establishment. However, most bar owners, like Joe, tend to slap up a custom made handle, which is frequently just a plain paddle that somebody has crafted a label for, tap the beer and wait for people to try it. They have no real financial interest in the brand over and above the other brands on tap since they pay the same for every keg. These are the ones that fail and if the beer is still on tap six months later it has become more of a vanity issue than anything else.

There are a handful of brewers out there that make special beers just for private labeling. This seems to be a little more successful as they will only have 10 or so handles of this in a given market, all under private labels. There is no ABC Brewery reference point so people are willing to give it a try and when it is unique become return customers. This is especially helpful if the style is an interesting variation on a basic beer flavor. For example, an unfiltered amber still has that nice middle of the road amber flavor that the middle of the road drinker will enjoy, but the unfiltered aspect provides an interesting change of pace and may even hook in the experimental craft drinker. One thing

about the experimental craft drinker is that they love to find something unique that is not available everywhere.

As a rule, however, private labeling isn’t necessarily good for the breweries. Some brewers will say that a dollar is a dollar and as long as they are selling beer, it’s all good. What they are missing is the same thing as Joe. If you remember Joe had a beer that he paid the same price for as if it wasn’t a private label and in doing so may have sacrificed the luster of the brand. For the brewery, they are getting the same dollar return on that keg and putting in the same amount of effort to sell that keg. Perhaps more, if they are involved in creating the tap handle for the bar. However, they lose most of the possibility of gaining any additional ABC Brewery customers from selling that keg as most people that try it won’t take the time to learn who makes it, and if they do, they tend to not remember the next time. Most people get used to a brewery’s general style of tap handles, and, if the private label doesn’t have the same style, they won’t recognize it on subsequent visits. So the brewery has made a few bucks on the keg, but lost any buildup of goodwill.

So there you have it, private labels can do okay, but historically do not. Private labels, except in a few instances are not typically brand builders for the account serving them. Private labels don’t usually bring in any extra money to the bar or brewery. Finally, most consumers don’t have an interest in private labels. So go ahead, try Joe’s Pale Ale and try it again if you think you like it, but, for me, the most fun about the private labels is trying to guess what beer it actually is, so I know exactly what I am drinking. That’s a fun game to play. Until next time…

BEACHSIDE BREWFEST FOR CHARITY

Friday, November 16th – Sunday, November 18th

Sandbar Mexican Grill in Chandler

In October, Sandbar Mexican Grill in Chandler provided new flavors for Valley mugs. In November, Sandbar will be putting these beers to good use with a philanthropic event: Beachside Brewfest for Charity. Benefitting Suns Nite Hoops www.sunsnitehoops.org, the Brewfest will be a “hopping” weekend extravaganza taking place Friday, November 16th to Sunday, November 18th. All weekend, those looking to sample the best of the craft can purchase eight tasting tickets for $10, which can be redeemed for 14oz drafts at tasting tents on Sandbar’s patio. Tasting tents include local microbreweries Four Peaks

Brewery and SanTan Brewing Co., who will be providing samples of their newest beers and giving out craft beer swag. Guests can also enjoy Surfboard Samplers for $4 (normally priced at $8). The samplers offer four 4.5oz glasses served on a custom surfboard plank. Beer specials will also be available throughout the evening with $3 domestic drafts, $3 Dos XX drafts, and $5 craft drafts. On Saturday, there will be a Beer Cocktail and Beer Mixing Competition between local mixologists. Judged by the Sandbar crew, the winner will receive $400 in cash and prizes.

Live music, DJs and sporting events will keep the energy soaring throughout the weekend and anyone looking to get competitive with their friends can enjoy a game of Cornhole all weekend long, while sipping craft drafts. Truly an event not to be missed!

Clothes do make the man when it comes to attracting women. Just look at James Bond, who is celebrating 50 years of successful wooing. Search for photos online, and most of the results show the character in an elegant black tux, regardless of who is playing him (currently Daniel Craig).

Indeed, a study conducted by John M. Townsend and Gary D. Levy found that women consider the same man more or less attractive in relation to the status of his clothes.

Few understand this better than Alan Au, co-designer at Jimmy Au’s in Beverly Hills, who has outfitted many of Hollywood’s leading men, including Tom Cruise, Al Pacino and Mark Wahlberg. The store specializes in men under 5 feet 8 inches, just like Sidney Reilly, the Russian spy who inspired 007.
