Good Health and Safe Golfing
A guy stood over his tee shot for what seemed an eternity; looking up, looking down, measuring the distance, fig-
uring the wind direction and speed and driving his partner nuts.
Finally his exasperated partner says, "What's taking so long? Hit the blasted ball."
The guy answers, "My wife is up there watching me from the clubhouse. I want to make this a perfect shot."
"Forget it, you don't stand a chance of hitting her from here."
He left home around 8:00 to play golf with his friends. On the way out the door, he answered his wife’s “What time will you be
home?” question with “Probably around 1:30 – I’ll have lunch at the club.”
1:30 came and went, 3:00 passed, 6:15, still not home, finally at about 7:00 PM he rolls in the driveway, leaves his clubs in the
garage, and presents his wife with a pizza, and begins the apologetic story.
We finished our game about 11:30, had lunch, and I started home, when alongside the road I saw this attractive girl with a flat tire
on her car. I stopped to help, got the tire changed, and looked around for a place to wash my hands. She offered money, but I
refused, so she suggested that I at least allow her to buy me a beer. She said there's a tavern just up the road, and they have a
restroom, you can clean up a bit. I agreed to stop, we had a beer, then another beer, then a couple more, and I realized that this
girl was not only pretty, she was very friendly, and a good companion to spend time with. Before I knew it, we were in the motel
next door having sex. And that is why I am so late getting home.
His wife looked him right in the eye and said ʺDonʹt bullshit me you played 36 holes, didn't you?”……

Q. So Mark—what’s the ‘OC’ all about?
R. Well Larry, OC Constructions has been around for over 60yrs starting with my Grand Father back in the early fifties and
yes at 97 yrs. old he is still interested in the running of the business. We have mainly catered for the small to medium
type builders in all areas of structural concreting and have recently been getting into some commercial work.
Q. You & Brenden have been teamed up for some time…how did that come about?
R. Brenden starting working for the OC when my dad ran the business so I guess his dad got him the job - I of course was
only about 10 yrs. old so it wasn’t for another 10 yrs. that brenden and I started working together and in 2008 when my
father retired we became business partners.
Q. How long have you two been playing golf, do you remember your first game?
R. I took up golf when I was about 16yrs old, my father who was a member at Rosebud Country club used to get me to
come along to caddy, so I thought I might as well take it up. Dean Glatzer and I started playing socially after work at
Morack golf course which might have been an excuse to drink beer.
Q. When did you join the Foothills Club & how did you get invited to your first game?
R. I first started playing with foothills in 1985 as I had been dropping Dean Glatzer off at peninsula games before I went
surfing but after many wipeouts thought maybe golf was a safer option. Foothills must have been pretty popular or may-
be they didn’t like my character as I had to wait 3 years before becoming a full member.
Q. I see you’ve won a few titles along the way; do you have a favorite local course or hole?
R Sorrento golf course is where I had my first ever win which was even more memorable as the event was par which I
know most people hate but for some reason suited me. In 1994 when I won the club championship I also nearly won the
NAGA. (Most wins and most NAGA’s not bad - some people reckon it was a tactic to keep my 36 handicap).
Q You’ve done something a lot of golfers only dream about….attended the Masters in Augusta?
R Yep the masters was a once in a life time experience, standing on the 7th tee talking to Stuart Appleby who we bought a
couple of slabs of VB over for, having Tigers ball nearly hit us and just the aura of the place were major highlights. my
uncle is lucky enough to work there, he looks after the 6th hole and is mates with a lot of the golfers so had some very
interesting stories, if you’re watching on TV you can normally see him he looks like an old member of foothills ‘Ralph
Baker’ ( funny that he is my uncle as well ).
Q And finally, you’re a big Hawks fan, where do you see them finishing at the end of the home and away
season 2012?
R Yes I am a big Hawks fan, so are all my family and so are 90% of my employees. When my Grand Father emigrated
from Holland, the first place they put him up was Hawthorn which started a tradition that every living Otten Male bar-
racks for Hawthorn, not a bad tradition since we have won the most grand finals since the Fifties. Anyway if the Hawks
heads don’t swell to much with all this media (Buddy in every second ad) we certainly have a team that can go all the
way.

Open. She went on to win a 6 way play off.
The Mole is a mole! Sorry to everyone for the late newsletter, but The Mole has crawled down his own hole (which he loves
doing) and could not be approached to write the report unless somebody was willing to put their hand up to pull him back
out.
Therefore it is I who shall come to the rescue and tell you all of the crap that happened at Churchill Park.
‘Twas a fine day for golf, with not a breath of wind, and no sun to be seen, but that did not stop the sweat from dripping
down thy own crack.
The weather was hot and humid, and only the guys who could handle their own sweat stench could handle the pace.
With a home ground advantage, Andrew (Mumbles) Manning took the honours with a 69 which I believe is the first one of
his life. He has had 3 holes in one, but those holes have all seen it before, and so I guess they don’t really count. Who else
wants the easy option of being where many men have been before?
Bernie (Kung Fu) Herbert came in second with 70 and Dean (Prez) Glatzer took out 3rd with a fine 73.
The shootout has now left 16 players vying for the inaugural players vest which Mark Otten wears with pride for a year. Un-
fortunately Mark is out of the shootout because of a severe case of “getting the mole out of his arse” syndrome in January.
Luckily for Mark he has taken steroids and is feeling much stronger now.
Tony Watson must have had a few red wines on the day as he couldn’t find his way to the course. Strange seeing as he is a
member of Waverley which is across the road! He decided to get his moneys worth by taking 131 shots to complete his
round. That gave him a nett 99 which was enough to take out the NAGA by a good margin. Paul Dossiter was invited to play
by Norm, and it seems they are similar in DNA with a 93 and 89 respectively. Great golf guys. If you want to get to Norms
standards Paul, just learn how to throw your club in the correct way.
The nearest the pins and longest drives elude me, but I am sure you are all winners and have balls to prove it!
I hope your new handicaps are to your liking and if not, stiff shit! They are calculated to the new handicapping system so you
can feel free to contact your local handicapper (Ian Falconer) if you have any problems. Mine is 43 so I love him!!!
Be sure to book in for Waterford, as Foothills now has 49 members with a cap of 50, and only 40 – 44 players allowed per
game. Book in early on your computer or miss out on prizes at the end of the year.
See you all at Waterford for the sponsor’s day, Until then, I am
