FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
THE “REAL THING” A story is told of Pat who was ninety years old. Pat was dying and so the priest was called out for the last rites. The padre decided to add to the ritual the renewal of baptism vows
or promises. To the questions: “Do you believe in God? Do you believe in Jesus Christ? Do you believe in the Catholic Church?” Pat firmly answered, “I do.” But when the priest asked, “Do you reject Satan and all his empty promises?” Pat hesitated. Then he muttered, “Listen Father, at this point I don’t want to make an ene-my of anyone!” Well, when we became Catholics, of course we were baptized. Part of the baptismal rite is the promis-es. A promise is a sacred vow. In Baptism, if we were babies, these promises were made for us by our parents and godparents. Later on, we ratified them ourselves in the Sacrament of Confirmation. We need to recall that being a Catholic entails certain responsibilities and obligations. Christians should be different. At the baptism font, we were regenerated and born spiritually into God’s kingdom. In the topsy-turvy world that is 2017, it is really necessary that we Catholics should be the “ real thing.” In other words, try to be living as authentic followers of Christ. That’s a tall order. We might wonder at times, why the Church has a bad name. Well, one reason is that a good number of us don’t try. We just throw the teachings of Jesus “to the winds” and follow the crowd and the common de-nominator. Our lives then, are no different from anyone else’s in a moral sense and that is not right. An old rhyme put it this way: “Mister Smith went to church on Sunday: but Mister Smith went to hell for what he did on Monday!” Obviously for Mister Smith, there was a “disconnect” between his worship and his practical behavior. We have to strive with the help of God’s grace to become better people. I heard a story recently of a man who had been a closet slob all his life. He just could not understand the logic of neatness. Why make your bed if you’re going to sleep in it again tonight? Why put the lid on the tube of toothpaste if you’re going to take it off again in the morning? The man was compulsive about his messiness. Then he got married! His wife was very patient with him. She said she did not mind his habits if he did not mind sleeping on the couch. Well, since he did mind, he really began to change. He enrolled in a twelve step program for slobs. A physical therapist helped him rediscover the muscles used for hanging up shirts and placing toilet paper on the holder. His nose was reintroduced to Pine-Sol. He became a new man. The test came though when his wife went out of town for a week. At first, he reverted to his old ways. He figured he could be a slob for six days and then clean up on the seventh. But something strange happened. He could no longer relax with the dirty dishes in the sink or the towels flung on the bathroom floor or his clothing all over the place. What happened? The man had been exposed to a higher standard of living and he changed. That is exactly what our Catholic faith can do for each of us if we really pray and let the words of Christ and His gospel penetrate our hearts. We will be different-and in fact, the “real thing”- truly genuine disciples of the Lord! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
