Here is our summer read: “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amour Towles. Count Alex-ander Rostov has been sen-

tenced to life in prison at his residence the Metropole Hotel in Moscow. He has lived there for four years, since his family's estate was taken as a result of the Russian Revolu-tion. But instead of living in his fabulous suite he is moved to a small room in the attic. Being used to the good life he manages to continue living in the lifestyle to which he was accustomed. He enjoys an unusual exist-ence amid the upheavals of the revolution. His antics have been described as the Rus-sian likeness of Eloise at the Plaza. Many in-teresting characters show up at the restau-rants and bars of the Metropole including Nikita Khrushchev. Our next meeting will be on September 21st at 4:00 PM in the rectory.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

VACATION - TAKE FIVE! As we now are in mid-July and the weather has turned warm, many of us may be on vacation or are planning to go soon. Earl Wilson once wrote: “A vacation is what

you take when you can no longer take what you’ve been taking!” Yes, sometimes it is really good to get away from it all - the “it” meaning the rat race, the stresses, tensions and worries of daily living. A vacation should restore us and “re-charge” our batteries. Unfortunately, in our modern, sophisticated world there is less time than ever for leisure and relaxation. In the gospel, our Lord counselled his apostles “to come apart to rest awhile.” All of the dis-ciples had been working very hard in their ministry - evangelizing and assisting others in their needs. But instead of doing more, Jesus told them to rest! St. Mark tells us “that they went off to a deserted place.” So “going apart” for awhile can prevent us from “coming apart” at the seams! Even we priests take a vacation during the summer months. Usually, I take a week or two and spend it at Long Beach Island with a few other priests. We enjoy swimming, reading, sitting on the beach and going out for dinner. As far as the latter goes, sometimes it’s easier to cook a meal at the house! One night, we went to a restaurant which was rather crowded. One of the fathers placed his name with the waiter who told us it would be over a half an hour wait for a table. It was such a beautiful night with a really glorious sunset over the bay, that we all decided to walk over and take a look at the setting sun. Unfortunately in doing so, we missed when the maître d’ called out the name of our party. So it was another forty five minute wait. A very late dinner that night! Even so, just relaxing and stopping for a few moments to view God’s creation in nature is wonderful and restorative. When we take a vacation, we should remember that it is not a vacation from God. No mat-ter where we go, we can always find a church to attend Mass on Sunday and make time for the Lord. On a vacation, we have all the time in the world, so it should not be difficult to give God just one hour on Sunday. We should not be afraid to give more time to God especially in prayer. Time spent with Jesus is not time wasted but time very well spent. St. John Paul II once wrote: “Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love. Let us be generous with our time in going to meet Him in prayer and adoration.” Let’s not waste the summer months but use that time well so that we can all be restored physically, mentally and spiritually at the end of it. As a poet once put it so well: “Take time to think; it is the source of power. Take time to read; it is the foundation of wisdom. Take time to play; it is the secret of staying young. Take time to be quiet; it is the opportunity to see God. Take time to be aware; it is the opportunity to help others. Take time to laugh; it is the music of the soul. Take time to pray; it is the greatest power on earth! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Jerome 10
