Transitus of St. Francis Prayer Service October 3 is the vigil of St. Francis of Assisi’s death and bears a special name - the Transitus. The word is derived from the Latin meaning “passage,” “crossing” or “going over.” The feast has always been an important part of Fran-ciscan spirituality. Ideally, a Christian shouldn’t be afraid of death - or as St. Francis called it, “Sister Death.” Francis faced his own end with what could be described as joyful assurance. A gentle turning to God in the final, ultimate mys-tery - the passing over or, the turning over, of one’s soul to its Lover and Author. The Transi-tus specifically remembers the Poor Man of As-sisi at his holiest moment - the moment in which he met his God. Join us on Tuesday evening, October 3 at 7:00 PM in the church for this prayer service. 7

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

WASTING YOUR LIFE? Recently, Bishop Gerald Walsh, the Vicar for priests here in the Archdiocese of New York told me a little story. A couple of years back, Bishop Walsh was the Rector of our seminary here in Yonkers, New York-Saint Joseph’s. As it turned out, one afternoon, he had to go to a local CVS to pick up some items. As he was in the

drugstore doing his shopping, a woman came up to him and asked, “Father, are you at that place up the hill there?” (Meaning the seminary). The bishop said that yes, he was. The lady then proceeded to lecture the bish-op. She said, “May I make a request? Please, don’t send us any more priests who can’t speak English!” Well, Bishop Walsh handled the situation with his usual calm demeanor. He said, “Well, since you have asked me a question, I would like to ask you one as well… Tell me, how many young men and young women from your family have you encouraged to become priests and sisters?” The woman said, “Oh no Fa-ther-- that’s not for us-we want to have grandchildren. No one in our family could make that sort of sacrifice!” The bishop told the lady then that she should not complain about how things are in the Church when she could not even encourage “home grown” vocations in the family! I think that Bishop Walsh is onto some-thing here. The Church in America at times is what I would describe as a “Gimme Church.” People want the priests to do many things but as a rule, most of them don’t want their sons to consider a vocation to the priest-hood. So there is kind of a “disconnect” here. But maybe the “disconnect” could be explained by a devaluation of sacrifice in our country as a whole. A couple of years ago, there was a book published that was meant to be funny. The book was entitled Growing up Catholic. In one of the chapters, there was a picture of a handsome young priest and the caption underneath his picture was written “Father what a waste.” I suppose a good number of people in our country would consider the priesthood or religious life as a “waste.” Yet, what is often a “waste” in the eyes of the world is really a great treasure in the eyes of God! It is something for all of us to think about. At every Mass that I say, I always include a prayer for vocations in the prayer of the faithful. It is im-portant to pray and to encourage our young people to consider the possibility of a call to serve the Lord and His Church. Thank God for the services of our international priests of which we have two here assigned at Saint Charles Parish-Father Marius Fernando and Father Stefan Chanas-two very fine men. Without the service of our foreign priests, what would we do here in the Archdiocese and across the country? Even if some international priests cannot speak English that well, they speak with the “language of the heart” in their desire to serve God’s holy people with love and compassion. When he retired a few years ago, Msgr. Bergin left his chalice here with a note that read: “For the first priest ordained from Saint Charles.” Hopefully, some young man from the parish in the not too distant future will answer God’s call to serve and get that chalice! Continue to pray for vocations! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome PS: Next week the Second Collection will be for Saint Joseph’s Seminary
