FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

PRACTICAL CATHOLICS OR PRACTICING? One of my favorite old TV shows is the “Honeymooners” starring Jackie Gleason, Art Carney and Audrey Meadows. In one of the 39 episodes, Art Carney as Ed Norton pretends to be a doctor so he can help his friend Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) to win some money. When

asked where he practiced medicine, Ed Norton replies, “Oh I don’t have to practice-I know it already!” It’s a funny scene. That old TV episode made me think about we Catholics. Some of us profess to know all about our faith but we really fail to practice it fully. In this regard, just recently I attended a funeral Mass where the priest made this announcement before holy communion: “I now invite practicing Catholics to receive communion.” Then Father went on to remind everyone what “practicing” meant. He said, “If you missed Mass last Sunday you should not receive.” He invited them to receive a blessing instead. Now, perhaps the announcement could have been a bit more nuanced. Sometimes there are circum-stances that preclude people from attending Sunday Mass-for instance, illness or if one is travelling and can not find a church. Yet in essence, this priest was right and he showed some courage in speaking the truth. A good number of Catholics miss Mass on Sunday and don’t give it a second thought! It’s good for all of us to refresh our memory on how to receive the eucharist worthily. In that endeavor, the best thing is to consult the catechism of the church. The catechism tells us this: “anyone who desires to re-ceive Christ in the eucharistic communion must be in the state of grace. Anyone aware of a having a mortal sin must not receive communion without having received absolution in the Sacrament of Penance. (Catechism #1415). I heard a story recently about a priest in the 1950’s who was offering Mass in a parish church. At com-munion time, he went to the Tabernacle to get the hosts needed for the distribution of the eucharist. Lo and behold, not one person came up to the altar rail! The priest a very holy man, was disappointed. He held up the host and said, “Please-the Lord wants you to come!” But no one did. In those Pre-Vatican II days there was a good deal more reverence and understanding of what the eucharist is. It is not just a piece of bread or a cup of wine-it is Christ’s own body, blood and divinity. Maybe in those days there was too much fear. But currently, there is not enough respect or thought given to what happens at Mass and who it is we receive. A priest friend of mine told me, “I have 900 people who receive communion on Sunday but at Saturday confessions there are only 5 or 6 on the line!” So some balance is needed in the church. “Practical” Catholics are those people it seems who are “Catholic lite.” We all know what “lite” prod-ucts are. We now have “lite beer,” lite ice cream’ and so on. It’s so much better to have the real thing! Practi-cal Catholics don’t take their religion too seriously. But then there are ‘practicing Catholics” who really try to live out the teachings of the church even though it’s difficult. This is a challenge for all of us. During this summer, let us resolve to be better Catholics if we are “out of practice.” The Good Lord will appreciate it! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
