In fact, there is no part of our lives as Chrisans that prayer doesn’t touch. Everything we are called to be and everything we are called to do is colored and affected by our prayer life. This is true whether we have a “healthy” or an “unhealthy” prayer life. How much we pray, what we pray for and about, and our atude in prayer sets the tone for our lives as followers of Christ. One’s prayer life can be seen clearly in the fruit of one’s life. I believe that there should be a good un- derstanding of what to pray for and perhaps, more importantly, our atude in prayer. This is not about whose prayers God “hears.” Nor is it about suggesng that God only hears the well-trained prayer. It is about disciples making the effort to think and study about prayer and learn how to beer express to God our thoughts. If we are to effecvely reach the lost who are searching it makes sense for us to think about our atude in prayer – and what atude our words express, to think about what to pray for in the realm of tell- ing the good news, and to see how our atude and the content of our prayer might affect the way we go about evangelism. This morning we will begin with the atude aspect of prayer – all prayer – by looking again at the parable (no doubt based on something everyone had seen) of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18. Our atude in prayer should be humble toward God and gracious toward others. Some of our prayer language in public can sound dangerously like that of the Pharisee if we are not careful. For example, there is a difference in saying thank you to God for where you live and saying thank you to God that you do not live somewhere else. It may seem harmless and such things I believe come from good hearts occasionally (mine included). But any comparison that puts us on a higher plane than another will affect the way we interact, and it will affect our ability to tell the good news. Next we will think about what to pray for by looking at what Jesus tells his disciples in Mahew 9:36- 37. We should pray that the Lord of the harvest send people to gather those who are seeking. It is people who know that they are lost who are seeking – and they seek life and sasfacon in ways that are somemes offensive to us and to God. Unlike the Pharisee who did not want to be stained by contact with “sinners”. We pray that there will be those who will go into the fields and gather. I don’t know of any way to harvest any- thing without going into the field and working – and geng yours hands and clothes dirty. May we be prayerful in telling the gospel. May we be courageous, and may we be those who are working in the fields to gather.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

Prayer and Evangelism

(Luke 18:9-14: Matthew 9:36-38)

It may seem obvious to connect prayer with evangelism. In fact, there is no part of our lives as

Christians that prayer doesn’t touch. Everything we are called to be and everything we are called to do is

colored and affected by our prayer life. This is true whether we have a “healthy” or an “unhealthy” prayer

life. How much we pray, what we pray for and about, and our attitude in prayer sets the tone for our lives as

followers of Christ.

One’s prayer life can be seen clearly in the fruit of one’s life. I believe that there should be a good un-

derstanding of what to pray for and perhaps, more importantly, our attitude in prayer. This is not about

whose prayers God “hears.” Nor is it about suggesting that God only hears the well-trained prayer. It is about

disciples making the effort to think and study about prayer and learn how to better express to God our

thoughts.

If we are to effectively reach the lost who are searching it makes sense for us to think about our

attitude in prayer – and what attitude our words express, to think about what to pray for in the realm of tell-

ing the good news, and to see how our attitude and the content of our prayer might affect the way we go

about evangelism.

This morning we will begin with the attitude aspect of prayer – all prayer – by looking again at the

parable (no doubt based on something everyone had seen) of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18.

Our attitude in prayer should be humble toward God and gracious toward others. Some of our prayer

language in public can sound dangerously like that of the Pharisee if we are not careful. For example, there is

a difference in saying thank you to God for where you live and saying thank you to God that you do not live

somewhere else. It may seem harmless and such things I believe come from good hearts occasionally (mine

included). But any comparison that puts us on a higher plane than another will affect the way we interact,

and it will affect our ability to tell the good news.

Next we will think about what to pray for by looking at what Jesus tells his disciples in Matthew 9:36-

37. We should pray that the Lord of the harvest send people to gather those who are seeking. It is people

who know that they are lost who are seeking – and they seek life and satisfaction in ways that are sometimes

offensive to us and to God. Unlike the Pharisee who did not want to be stained by contact with “sinners”. We

pray that there will be those who will go into the fields and gather. I don’t know of any way to harvest any-

thing without going into the field and working – and getting yours hands and clothes dirty.

May we be prayerful in telling the gospel. May we be courageous, and may we be those who are

working in the fields to gather.

Grapevine Elementary Weekend Backpack Program

This program distributes around 50 backpacks full of weekend food to chil-

dren who would not otherwise have food. Please continue to bring in your

items! A list of suggested items is on the table in the foyer for your refer-

ence. Main Meal items are most needed!

We are glad you’ve joined us for worship today! Please fill out the information sheet found in the maroon binder at the end of your pew.

*An attended nursery is provided during worship assembly as well as a Children’s Church for ages 4 years thru 3rd grade which dismisses after Communion.

*Communion—We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord every Sunday (“first day of the week”) through a time of communion known as the Lord’s Supper. The “unleavened bread” represents His body and the “fruit of the vine” (cup of grape juice) represents His blood shed on the cross. As our guest, you are welcome to

participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various ministries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are welcome to give, but

please do not feel as though you must.

We will NOT meet tonight!

We WILL eat together this Wednesday.

Bring $3 for food and invite a friend!
