There have been struggles and controversies over the singing of hymns in worship for nearly as long as the church has been in existence. I suppose that if one were to spend a lile me a whole series could be done with tles like, Worship Wars: 17 th Century edion”, or Why does harmony cause so much disharmony?”, or The Power Point: Why the Congregaon Cant Join the Choir (10 th Century)Actually Worship Wars: 17 th Century Edionwas almost the tle of this lesson. Most discussions around sing- ing today center around a couple of points: with or without accompaniment, with or without a praise team”, or should there be a band (or orchestra) or a single instrument (organ, piano, or guitar). There are a few more, but they are off- shoots of these. As it turns out, singing is one of the clearest expressions of our theology during worship. And as with much of what we do with lile thought – which seems a rather dangerous game to play with something as vital as worshipping God – we oſten do not know what theology we are expressing. We typically assume that we have it right and stay hap- py unl someone comes along and makes us think about what we are doing. This morning we are going to do a lile history to help us appreciate what we are doing when we sing here at Pennyrile. We can discuss later whether we actually agree with ourselves. So here are decisions that we make every Sunday when we gather and sing – this is not a comprehensive list. 1. It is permissible for non-Chrisans to teach and exhort us. 2. It is permissible for women to teach men. 3. When we gather for worship, at least part of what we do is for our learning – many (most) of the hymns we sing are more like sermons than psalms. 4. It is permissible to recite wrien prayers and doctrines if we sing them. And here are a few things to consider when we sing. 1. Is it the content or the sound that we are drawn toward? (How many songs do we sing just because we like the way they sound?) 2. Is our singing about worship mood (geng the congregaon to feel a certain way) or is it an expression of what is going on in life? 3. Do we believe what you are singing? Let us sing with our heart, but with our mind also.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

About Singing

(I Chronicles 16:8-13; Colossians 3:12-17)

The church has an interesting and varied relationship with singing. One would think that something so preva-lent as Psalms in the Old Testament and the great number of references to The Psalms in the New Testament teaching would make singing in worship a foregone conclusion. But . . . dear brothers and sisters . . . you would be mistaken.

There have been struggles and controversies over the singing of hymns in worship for nearly as long as the church has been in existence. I suppose that if one were to spend a little time a whole series could be done with titles like, “Worship Wars: 17th Century edition”, or “Why does harmony cause so much disharmony?”, or “The Power Point: Why the Congregation Can’t Join the Choir (10th Century)”

Actually “Worship Wars: 17th Century Edition” was almost the title of this lesson. Most discussions around sing-ing today center around a couple of points: with or without accompaniment, with or without a “praise team”, or should there be a band (or orchestra) or a single instrument (organ, piano, or guitar). There are a few more, but they are off-shoots of these.

As it turns out, singing is one of the clearest expressions of our theology during worship. And as with much of what we do with little thought – which seems a rather dangerous game to play with something as vital as worshipping God – we often do not know what theology we are expressing. We typically assume that we have it right and stay hap-py until someone comes along and makes us think about what we are doing.

This morning we are going to do a little history to help us appreciate what we are doing when we sing here at Pennyrile. We can discuss later whether we actually agree with ourselves.

So here are decisions that we make every Sunday when we gather and sing – this is not a comprehensive list.

1. It is permissible for non-Christians to teach and exhort us.

2. It is permissible for women to teach men.

3. When we gather for worship, at least part of what we do is for our learning – many (most) of the hymns we sing are more like sermons than psalms.

4. It is permissible to recite written prayers and doctrines if we sing them.

And here are a few things to consider when we sing.

1. Is it the content or the sound that we are drawn toward? (How many songs do we sing just because we like the way they sound?)

2. Is our singing about worship mood (getting the congregation to feel a certain way) or is it an expression of what is going on in life?

3. Do we believe what you are singing?

Let us sing with our heart, but with our mind also.

*Communion—We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord every Sunday (“first day of the week”) through a time of communion known as the Lord’s Supper. The “unleavened bread” represents His body and the “fruit of the vine” (cup of grape juice) represents His blood shed on the cross. As our guest, you are welcome to

participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various ministries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are welcome to give, but

please do not feel as though you must.
