Chromebook Introduction
Objectives1. Understand what Chromebooks are and their strengths
and limitations2. Understand how staff and students sign in 3. Understand how to access and use the Chrome
browser4. Understand where the apps are located
What are Chromebooks?● New type of computer designed to get you on
the web as quickly as possible.● They’re faster, simpler, and more secure
than traditional computers● Runs on Google Operating System (OS), not
Microsoft or Apple
How Do Chromebooks Work?● All your work is done on the Chrome
Browser (no software to install)● All your items are saved on the web: apps,
documents, and settings (students will have 25GB of storage)
● Apps will be preinstalled for students to use (more can be added later)
Uses of Chromebooks vs Windows
Chromebooks➔ Create documents in
Google Docs ➔ Create spreadsheets in
Google Sheets ➔ Create presentations in
Google Slides ➔ Download apps for various
uses (many are free)
Windows➔ Create documents in
Microsoft Word ➔ Create spreadsheets in
Microsoft Excel ➔ Create presentations in
Microsoft PowerPoint ➔ Purchase software for
various uses ($)
Chromebook Limitations● Software that many people have been used to
(Microsoft Office) will not operate on the device.
● Information is not saved to the device● Internet access is needed to run most of the
apps (some documents can still be edited without internet connection)
Chromebook Advantages● Devices boot up and operate quickly● They are virus proof and auto update● You can access and share your information
from any device (even your computer from home)
● Students will be able to share projects and work on projects collaboratively in real time
Sign In Information➢ Students can sign into any Chromebook with
their information➢ Information will be saved to that account
and it could be accessed from anywhere➢ Chrome web browser starts when signed in

Web AuthenticationProvides internet access on our server for wireless devices. Students will be able to browse the web and receive updates.

Important Apps for Students
Google Docs
Web based word processor allows students to create and edit documents.
Similar to: Microsoft Word
Google Sheets
Web based application that allows students to create, update, and modify spreadsheets.
Similar to: Microsoft Excel
Google Slides
Web based application that allows students to create, edit, and plan presentations.
Similar to: Microsoft PowerPoint
Key Difference: All three apps can be edited live by more than one student.
File StorageFiles are stored in your Google Drive. This is similar to saving files on your computer or thumb drives.
Access your files by using the Files app (or Google Drive app)
You can also save files on to a thumb drive. Use the usb ports like you would on a laptop.
Signing Out ChromebooksOn average, one cart for every 4 classroomsSign out sheets will be attached to each cart. Information that will be recorded:➔ Date➔ Time➔ Chromebook Numbers Checking Out - write actual numbers of the
Chromebooks you are taking. Write all for whole cart. ➔ Received/Returned - By initialing, you are confirming that you have
taken out and returned those Chromebooks➔ Notes: Any technical issues should be reported immediately to Help
Desk. You can leave suggestions for use, apps, etc.
