When we arrived in Le Havre the families

picked us up and we went to their housesfor the bank holiday weekend. On the

Saturday we all met up in the morning

and went for a tour around Le Havre. Af-

ter that most people went to the beach

for the day and went swimming in the

freezing sea water. Later on some people

went to a party to welcome the wel-

come the English to France.

On Tuesday we met up at school and

travelled to Paris. It was very hot and eve-

ryone brought cold drinks or ice cream.

After seeing the Eiffel Tower we went to

see the Arc de Triomphe. We had lunch

there and then went to Montmatre and

did some shopping and then came back to Le Havre. On Wednesday we went to Parc Asterix for the

day. It took a while to get there but once we were there, Miss let us lose for the day. So we roamed round

the park going on all the rides.

On Thursday we went to Acrobronches, a place like Go Ape. At first we had to start on the low ones, but

as we progressed we were allowed on the higher ones. These were difficult as they were so high up, but

at the end there were zip wires which were great fun.

On Friday we went to the school for a lesson and a break time. After we were given the choice to either

go shopping or stay at school! You would think everyone would want to go shopping, but most of the

people stayed at school! The people who went shopping were treated to lunch! After we went back to

school to pick everyone up and then headed for the port. The exchange partners came to wave good

buy and then we left for Portsmouth.

Miss Moran and Mrs Bell took a group of eight year 8 students to the

boroughs 'Battle of the Books' competition at Teddington School.

We finished 4th in a very closely drawn competition, but the students

seemed more delighted that they beat Grey Court!

The students read 6 novels each and had three rounds of questions and

then a general literature round and fully enjoyed the experience.

The following students were an absolute credit to the school and each

got to choose a novel for taking part and representing Christ's School:

8B - Ben Patterson and Sharif Khan Bennett

8e - Tashi Barry and Massimo Chiesa

8M - Antonia Fox and Alexandra Greenwood

Library News

The Library this year has been quite an adventure and an honour to be

a part of. We have seen so many books being taken out and read, we

have bought and received several books. So many students come and

used the space with its new resources and new activities. Most have

been received well and it will be sad to say good bye to it all. Make

sure those who have loved the library get a limited edition badge at

the beginning of next term. Here's what it looks like:Mrs Brown and Mrs Bell have done an incredible job making the library

what it is today! Long may the library be a place where the students

feel safe and enjoy reading!

Battle of the Books11th July 2012

Humanities Society

Following an incredibly successful first year of our Humanities Society (HumSoc) weare now busy planning for September. We already have BBC newsreader and

journalist Nicholas Owen booked as our opening speaker of the year and are

looking for more volunteers!

We are searching for parents, or friends/contacts of parents, who work in sectors

related to the study of our Humanities subjects to come and speak. Mrs Harris and

Mr Roderick run the Thursday lunchtime meetings from 12.30 and around 25-40 enthusiastic pupils from all

year groups are now regularly attending.

Christ's School is lucky to have a lot of parents working in journalism, environment, the law, film-making,

politics, higher education, criminal justice system, charity and development sectors, so it would be great

if you could consider sparing half an hour one Thursday lunchtime to come and take part in a Q&A with

the students. All very informal, nothing to worry about!

Zorro

Zorro the musical was a challenging, exhilarating and

ultimately highly successful event in the school year,

and for me personally an absolute highlight in terms of

all that I have been involved in at the school.

'Zorro' began as a glimmer of an idea in the depths of

December when Philip Wilson who had seen the West

End show, realised that not only was the music wonder-

ful but that the whole show with its stunts, choreogra-

phy, comedy and colourful characters had tremendous

potential for a school production. He skilfully negotiated getting the first ever amateur rights and thus in

the twinkling of a rapier, the Zorro team (Philip Wilson, Frazer Blaxland, Valerie Busby and myself) was

formed. Auditions took place in February and the cast started rehearsing 2 or 3 times a week from March.

The story of Zorro is told by the gypsies who relate how a man named Diego put on the mask of Zorro atthe behest of his childhood friend, Luisa, in order to defend his countrymen from his tyrannical brother, Ra-

mon.

Zorro is an enormously complex show and a huge step

up from anything we had taken on before both in terms

of the intricacy of the Flamenco based score but also

the sheer challenge of staging the stunts and illusions,

capturing the passion of the peasant revolution, the

spirit of the gypsies, the romance between hero and

heroine and the excitement of the ensemble pieces

with our large cast. We were extremely lucky to havehelp from Buffy Davis (acting and directing) and Roger

Martin (fight director) and their input was invaluable..

Over the months it was brilliant to see the pupils rising to

the challenge; learning the discipline of theatre, the demands of performance, the commitment to the

rest of the company and that sheer hard work is the foundation of success.

And they did it!

The success of the three nights of the performance is best summed up by the many comments from our

audience and all involved.

On Friday 22nd June 2012 the year ten GCSE Geography classes visited Hengistbury Head as

part of their GCSE Geography controlled assessment. 55 eager and enthusiastic students

braved rain showers and strong winds to measure beach profiles, examine coastal processesand assess the effectiveness of coastal defences. Mr Spicer has been running the trip for ten

years and this year was the worst weather yet. Mr Roderick looks forward to marking the con-

trolled assessment in September.

Many thanks to Mr Williams, Mr Scott, Miss Bell and Mrs Duckworth for supporting the Geogra-

phy Department.

Hengistbury Head

Oxford University Visit

The Dux Awards scheme recognises and rewards high performing pupils in Year 9 (14-year-olds).

Vivienne Leech and Abigail Houghton- Brown were chosen by staff to visit a Russell Group uni-

versity. They were accompanied by Mrs Georgina Young, our Gifted and Talented Coordinator

to visit Oxford University on June 14th. The girls carried out some activities in the William Pitt muse-

um and the Natural History museum with other Dux

award scheme students. They then had a tour of

Oxford and lunch at Oriel College before carrying

out another activity at the Museum of History of Sci-

ence. The day was designed to inspire the students

to think about aiming for a Russell Group university

and to offer activities with stretch and challenge.

The Dux award scheme is supported by the Depart-

ment for Education and hopefully will run again

next year.

Congratulations to them

Rene Salt is a Holocaust survivor from Poland, now living in London. She was able to survive

many concentration camps, including Auschwitz, when sadly most of her family did not. She

married an Englishman who was soldier during the war and a liberator of Bergen-Belsen con-

centration camp. She spoke at length to the Year 9's about her experiences and was able to

show them photographs of her family. The pupils behaviour was excellent. Prior to the session

the Year 9's had been learning about the holocaust and they had many opportunities duringthe session to ask the questions they had prepared.

Our Year 10 students undertook a range of diverse and in-

teresting work placements during their 2 week work experi-

ence at the end of the summer term.

Students work placements included hairdressers, courts,

schools, the Met Office, the BBC, Homebase, vets, archi-

tects, museums, libraries and many more.

Teachers visited the students in the second week and re-

turned to school with glowing reports of our students be-

haviour, ability, talents and maturity. Some students were

offered part time work, or promised a future job opportuni-

ty.

As in previous years our students were a credit to us, their

parents and themselves.

Students enjoyed three days of activities ranging from visits to museums, art galleries, the sea-

side, Wimbledon, Cadbury World, and experiencing bush camping, paint balling, Zumba fit-

ness, cycling, climbing, horse riding, photography, archery and much more.

Staff and students enjoyed activities week as a part of the alternative learning programme giv-

ing students the opportunity to take part in ac-

tivities that they may have not yet have experi-

enced.

A lot of fun was had by all.

Natural History Trip - Wednesday 4th July

An investigative trip for 20 of our pupils. Ms Hol-

ton, Ms Young and myself accompanied ourpupils to see all manner of flora and fauna! The

highlights included the animatronic T-Rex and

the climate interactive exhibits. We split into 3

groups focussing upon one aspect of this vast

museum and by the end of the day all feet

were sore (well, mine was anyway)!

Science Museum Trip- Thursday 5th July

Ms Levien, Ms Ganesh and I lead this interactive task trip. One specific area the Launch

pad was designed to give pupils problems to solve. We also saw a Rocket show, with ex-

ploding balloons and astronauts as highlights! Great fun (and less walking)!

Rockets and Explosions-Friday 6th July

A days mirth and Mayhem in school, in-

volving Ms Houlton, Ms Ganesh, Mr Bald-win, Ms Levien and myself!

We made aeroplanes, volcanoes, explod-

ed sugar and jelly babies. Egg parachutes

went down well! A bottle rocket flew outof the school grounds (and has been spot-

ted in space)! Were still cleaning up the

Mentos and lemonade explosions..

All activities will be displayed on the Sci-

ence notice boards!

The following pupils represented Team Richmond in the 2012 London Youth Games. The Lon-

don Youth Games is the largest annual sporting event in Europe where the 33 London bor-

oughs compete against each other in over 50 different sporting events. The following is a list

of pupils from your school, what sport they represented the borough in, the team position and

if they won any individual medals within their sport.

Sports day saw Y7,8 & 9 competing for individual and house titles under grey clouds and a wave

of enthusiasm. With the rain preventing throwing events taking place, running took centre stage

as students competed for their forms in the teams selected by their newly elected sports Cap-

tains. Notable performances came from TashiBarry in Y8 winning a fiercely competed

15oom race. Tashi held off London YouthGames Cross Country champion Otto Sterner

to win in a new PB. Stefan Langley won the

Blue ribbon 100m event, beating Amman Fer-

guson. Agnes Brook-Sulman was dominant in

her winning of the Y7 girls 300m.

Overall, 7B, 8M & 9B took the year group

awards and Magdalene House took the over-

all house title. Congratulations to everyone

who took part.

Sports Day

Inter-school Torch Relay marks World Sport Day at Christs School

25 June 2012

As part of celebration for the London 2012 World Sport Day, Christs

School took part in an inter-school torch relay celebrating the Olym-

pic value of friendship.

The torch relay was coordinated by Richmond School Sport Partner-

ship and saw ten secondary schools, two special schools and one

college take part in a brilliant effort by students who were involved

in designing, manufacturing and carrying the 13 torches.

Richmond Park Academy brought their torch to Christs, leaving it

with here as a 2012 gift of friendship. They arrived through the main

gates to a cheering Guard of Honour provided by 8A & B. A group

of Year 7s then welcomed them with a dance followed by a wel-

come speech from Esme Gritten and Karen Valle Christs School

Olympic Ambassadors

Our torch relay team left on the next leg of the relay carrying our fantastic torch. Designed by Dorsa

Nasrollahi in Year 9 and made by Mr Gray the torch looked magnificent as the 8 pupils with Ms Need-

ham & Ms Bromly powered out of the school in the direction of Strathmore School. The torch team com-

prised of Hamish Sharp, Lily Shield Polyzoides, Otto Sterner, Hannah Perks, Terrance van Cooten, Freya

Donnell, Josh Pacho and Rachel Jarvis.

They received a great welcome as they arrived at Strathmore School where they handed over the

Christs School torch. Accompanying the Strathmore relay team to Greycourt School was the final leg of

our Olympic torch relay.

A really fantastic day which celebrated the London 2012 Olympics and linked students from each school

in the values of the Olympic and Paralympic games.

On Friday 4th May Surrey LTA came into school and 20 Year 10 Christs pupils were given the

opportunity to attend a Tennis Leaders course. Throughout the day pupils learnt how to score

and run a tournament. They then put their new skills to the test on Monday 18th June wherethey attended and helped run the Year 3 & 4 Borough Tennis Tournament at Sheen Tennis

Club.

One of the organisers of the tournament said that all the pupils had been a credit to the

school.

Strictly Cycling competition

On 11th June five secondary schools took

part in the first ever Borough Cycling Com-

petition. The event was held at Wal-

degrave School and was organised by Brit-

ish Cycling. As Christs have been running a

cycling club for Year 7 & 8 we took a full

team to the event. Although we were

competing against other schools Year 9 pu-

pils the Christs team did really well finishing

in third place and claiming a bronze medal.

Well done!

Richmond Borough Golf Championships

Another first this term was the Richmond Borough Golf Championships. The event took place

at Fulwell Park Golf Club on Thursday 10th May. An encouraging 26 pupils from all the borough

secondary Schools had entered. Christs School was represented by Jake Goodyear & Flynn

Halsall. Both boys did well although the weather was against them.

The event will be running next year so any budding golfers out thereget practicing!

Christs School Hosts Sportsability day

On 9thJune Christs School played host to the borough Sport Inclusion day. Run by Dave

Francis from Clarendon School it is day of sport for young people who find physical activity a

challenge. The day was spent in the sports hall playing wheelchair basketball (which I found

particularly tricky!), boccia, rounders amongst other activities. A particular thank you goes to

the group of Year 9 girls who took part in the training and then helped run the event on the

day. Well Done Girls.

Richmond Borough Athletics Championships

A perfect day for athletics dawned on Tuesday 19th June. Kingsmeadow stadium was

bathed in sunshine with a slight breeze down the home straight. The Christs school athletes

were in peak physical condition and raring to go despite a fallen tree in Richmond Park caus-

ing a slight delay in getting there!

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you have a relaxing and restorative summer break.

Despite the wet weather weve had a good half term. I mentioned in my last letter that we wererunning lunchtime activities in the Chapel during this half term. The students have been able to

dip in and out of those.

Weve had all kinds of interesting and wide-ranging discussions, storytelling sessions and creative

art activities. These were led by staff, students and youth workers/pastoral assistants from the lo-

cal churches.

Earlier this term I received emails from a couple of parents asking about the possibility of a par-

ents/carers prayer group to pray for the school community and our needs. Ive since met up

with one of our parents, Susan Armstrong, who is a member of Holy Trinity Church in Richmond.She would like to co-ordinate a Parents/Carers Prayer Group. If you are interested in being a

part of that please contact Susan via email at [email protected]

I recently bought six prayer mats for the use of our Muslim students. Next term these will be avail-

able in the Chapel. We are a Christian school and hospitality is a key theme for us. We are

therefore committed to all students feeling welcome

and at home, regardless of their faith perspective.

I hope the rain clouds pass and the sun shines warm

upon you during the summer holiday.

Harvest Festival

As you know we encourage our students to get involved in a variety of charitable giving and

fundraising events. One of the causes that we support every year is SPEAR (Single Persons Emer-

gency Accommodation in Richmond).

SPEAR is a charity working with homeless people in and around Richmond. Since 1987, we haveoffered services to thousands of homeless and vulnerable people, successfully transforming lives

and supporting many of our service users to the point that they have achieved total independ-

ence.

SPEAR is not just about homelessness and housingour aim is to support clients to live inde-pendently, reach their aspirations and live a fulfilling life.

We support clients to develop new skills, confidence and self-esteem. We know that increased

self-esteem comes with small steps of change and that all these steps make the difference to

maintaining a home and breaking the cycle of homelessness.

We offer excellent services to those most marginalised in society and we strive constantly to im-

prove those services and the lives of our clients.

At Christs School we feel it is important to give thanks for the things we have and to show ourgratitude through the giving of gifts to others who are not as fortunate. This Harvest Festival we

will be collecting non-perishable items (tinned foods, dried food stuffs, pasta etc.) to donate to

people being supported by SPEAR in Richmond. We would be really appreciative if every studentcould bring in at least one item for the collection.

The collection will be displayed during our Harvest Festival celebration and then a small group of

volunteer students will accompany Ruth, our chaplain, to the SPEAR

Hostel to donate the goods.

Donated items should be handed into form tutors by September 14th2012.

The Olympics are coming to Richmond upon Thames

Richmond upon Thames will host six Olympic events this summer, including the

torch relay and road cycling. All residents, particularly in Richmond, Twicken-

ham, Teddington, Hampton Court, Hampton Wick and Kew, should be aware
